Hello. Cold Arctic air not just affecting the UK at the moment, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
it's also been affecting much of the US and Canada. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
We've seen snowfall as far south as New Orleans over the past few days. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
The area of blue, that Arctic air, pushes all way down the Gulf Coast. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
As you can see, towards us. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
But with the jet stream starting to strengthen, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
over 200mph through this weekend, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
we start to throw weather fronts our way into the air that we have | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
and with that a big risk of disruptive snowfall for Sunday. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
Met Office amber warning in place across North Wales, | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
much of the Midlands. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
It's these areas where travel disruption is certainly likely, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
anywhere between 5-20cm of snow possible. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
The northern edge a little bit uncertain but we'll see | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
snow get very close by into the morning, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
the southern edge is going to be a mixture of rain | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
turning to snow, back to rain through the day. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
The southernmost counties of England, this is where | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
we'll see mainly rain, same to the south of Wales, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
and a different issue here, it's going to be the strength | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
of the wind, gales if not sever gale force winds, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
that could cause disruption of its own. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Notice the snow across this central swathe of England | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
and Wales starts to peter out a little bit, turning | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
lighter and patchier into the afternoon, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
far north of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
then a few wintry showers in the far north of Scotland, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
most will have a dry and sunny Sunday. Pretty cold one, though, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
temperatures struggling to get above freezing. Same where | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
you've got the snow in the south. Strong winds, they could get figures | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
into double digits. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
Ice is then going to be the big risk as we go into Sunday night | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
as the patchy sleet and snow gradually clears | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
southwards. Some further snow showers in parts | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
of Scotland and Northern Ireland and a widespread frost. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
Temperatures in the city centres like this | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
minus double digits through some parts of northern | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
England, north Wales and also parts of Scotland as well. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
So a very cold start to Monday but we're watching this | 0:01:39 | 0:01:43
area of low pressure. For us, the good news is it's driven | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
by a 200mmph jet stream. It looks like it'll | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
strengthen and hit Spain, Portugal and France greatest. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
We could get close enough to bring severe gales | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
to the south-east corner, rain which could turn to snow on | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
its western flank, only a small chance at the moment | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
but one to watch. Sleet and snow flurries could cause | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
problems in Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and also parts of Cornwall. Much of the country cold, sunny | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
but rather raw. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
We go into Tuesday, well, after a night of clear skies | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
and lighter winds there will be a severe, widespread frost, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
especially where snow is on the ground, but Tuesday | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
itself slowly warming up through the day, dry, reasonably | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
sunny day for many, but changes afoot. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Now, we go into the middle part of the week with the Atlantic | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
starting to take over from Arctic air. This weather front | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
brings the change. Some snow on the hills to begin with, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
turning to rain as that weather front pushes its way | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
eastwards, lying across eastern England to start | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
Wednesday. That will clear, sunshine out across eastern areas | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
in the afternoon. Frequent, heavy, thundery showers in | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
the west. Some of these could be sleet, hail and snow. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
Snow though mainly over the higher ground. The air's not | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
quite as cold as we started the week. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
We continue with those winds coming off the Atlantic | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
but starting to go a bit more north-westerly by the | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
time we hit Thursday. There will be some very windy | 0:02:53 | 0:02:56
conditions through Wednesday night into Thursday. Could be | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
severe gales, and it's a sunshine, shower day for Thursday, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
again some of those heavy with hail and thunder, sleet | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
and snow primarily over the hills. The second half of the | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
week not as cold as this weekend. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
And then we go into next weekend. Friday and next weekend | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
looks like the winds will go back to north-westerly once again, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
even northerly. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
So it's going to be cold to finish the week going into the weekend. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
There will be wintry showers around, snow mainly over the hills, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
not as bad as we'll see on Sunday, the nights will be frosty | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
but next week things will turn | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
a bit milder and we'll get that | 0:03:25 | 0:03:26
oscillating pattern to take us | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
through next week, too. Bye for now. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
