Hello. Sunday was certainly a day to keep us meteorologists on our toes.

0:00:020:00:05

It was a day of some big extremes

0:00:050:00:07

and big travel problems as well.

0:00:070:00:09

Let's start with the snow.

0:00:090:00:10

We saw a foot of snow fall quite readily across the hills of Wales.

0:00:100:00:14

Some of you saw a little bit more than the 30 centimetres

0:00:140:00:17

recorded at Sennybridge.

0:00:170:00:19

Much, much milder to the south coast of England and Wales.

0:00:190:00:22

Around the Bristol and English channels, we saw severe gales

0:00:220:00:25

peaking over open waters of the English Channel at around 90mph.

0:00:250:00:29

Quieter further north, yes, but colder.

0:00:290:00:32

Parts of Scotland didn't get above -7 through the entire day.

0:00:320:00:35

And, of course after temperatures like that by day,

0:00:350:00:38

we start Monday on a very, very cold note.

0:00:380:00:40

One thing to keep our eye out for on Monday, amongst others,

0:00:400:00:43

is this area of low pressure.

0:00:430:00:45

It's going to be another day of weather extremes for some.

0:00:450:00:49

We've got severe gales across in France.

0:00:490:00:51

Some of those will get very close to the south-east through the day.

0:00:510:00:53

Outbreaks of rain - East Anglia and the south-east corner which

0:00:530:00:56

will turn to snow at times, particularly over the hills.

0:00:560:00:59

We'll see further snow flurries in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland

0:00:590:01:02

and across the far western fringes of Wales and Cornwall.

0:01:020:01:05

But for most, it's a dry and raw day.

0:01:050:01:07

Lots of sunshine overhead,

0:01:070:01:09

but after that icy start,

0:01:090:01:11

barely above freezing and more ice as we go into Monday night.

0:01:110:01:14

The showers decaying back towards the coasts.

0:01:140:01:17

Again, a little bit wintry in places

0:01:170:01:18

but nowhere near as severe as we've seen through the weekend.

0:01:180:01:21

What will be severe is the frost to take us

0:01:210:01:23

through Monday night into Tuesday morning.

0:01:230:01:24

Where snow is lying,

0:01:240:01:26

-12 is possible just about anywhere in Scotland, England and Wales.

0:01:260:01:29

In particular, that's because we've got a ridge

0:01:290:01:31

of high pressure building in keeping winds light,

0:01:310:01:33

but it also takes us into the quietest weather day

0:01:330:01:36

of the week by and large.

0:01:360:01:37

There will be some fog around in the morning.

0:01:370:01:39

There will be used a few showers around some western

0:01:390:01:41

and eastern coasts, but for most, it's a dry day, a sunny day,

0:01:410:01:45

temperatures only just creeping above freezing.

0:01:450:01:47

Some will stay below freezing all day long,

0:01:470:01:50

especially where there is a good pack of snow lying on the ground.

0:01:500:01:52

But signs of changes towards the west later on.

0:01:520:01:55

Cloud will increase, patchy rain into Northern Ireland

0:01:550:01:57

and the far west of Scotland later.

0:01:570:01:59

All linked into this weather front which will introduce less cold

0:01:590:02:01

Atlantic air as we go through Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

0:02:010:02:04

So not as cold on Tuesday night

0:02:040:02:06

but outbreaks of rain pushing its way eastwards.

0:02:060:02:08

Some heavy bursts and we could see a little wave

0:02:080:02:10

develop on the front and that could intensify the rain.

0:02:100:02:13

Add that to snowmelt,

0:02:130:02:14

there could be a minor problem with some flooding and

0:02:140:02:16

we'll see more showers,

0:02:160:02:17

and longer spells of rain pushing from the west later.

0:02:170:02:20

The wind is going to turn to a north-westerly

0:02:200:02:22

direction that will bring slightly colder air once again.

0:02:220:02:24

Again, not on the levels we've seen through the weekend

0:02:240:02:26

but a chilly second-half to the week after a brief

0:02:260:02:28

lift in the temperatures on Wednesday.

0:02:280:02:30

A more straightforward picture of sunshine and showers for Thursday.

0:02:300:02:33

Showers most prevalent to the south-west of the country.

0:02:330:02:36

Snow mainly on the hills.

0:02:360:02:38

Most it will be rain, hail and sleet.

0:02:380:02:40

Rumbles of thunder with it.

0:02:400:02:41

Northern, eastern areas always a bit drier and brighter.

0:02:410:02:44

Had a bit of frost here to start the day and a bit of frost as well

0:02:440:02:46

to take us through Thursday night into Friday.

0:02:460:02:48

The low pressure pushing its way eastwards,

0:02:480:02:50

that opens the door back to northerly winds once again.

0:02:500:02:52

It's going to stay cold towards the end of the week.

0:02:520:02:54

Those showers that we've seen recently

0:02:540:02:56

across the far west of Wales will be back.

0:02:560:02:58

And the showers wintry in nature to the east of Scotland

0:02:580:03:01

and eastern parts of England. But many will be dry and sunny.

0:03:010:03:04

So we go into the weekend, cold air in place, look west -

0:03:040:03:06

another wodge of mild air trying to push in,

0:03:060:03:09

but cold air waiting in the wings once again.

0:03:090:03:12

Next week will be an oscillating week.

0:03:120:03:13

Certainly through the weekend, it will be cold,

0:03:130:03:15

a few wintry showers mainly around the coast.

0:03:150:03:17

Many will be dry and sunny but with frosty nights.

0:03:170:03:20

By the end of the weekend,

0:03:200:03:21

into the start of next week, it starts at milder once again but with

0:03:210:03:24

some wet and windy weather and then could cold air be back later?

0:03:240:03:28

We'll keep you updated.
