Hello there. Our weather looks pretty quiet for the next few days, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
by this time next week, it will be much more disturbed, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
much more unsettled, and between now and then, of course, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
we have Christmas. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
Now, the jet stream, the winds high up in the atmosphere, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
is currently sitting well to the north of the British Isles. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
And that's driving all the weather systems, all the areas | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
of low pressure, well away to the north. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
Now, by Christmas Day, you'll notice the position of the jet stream | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
is much further south. It will also be much stronger, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
so not only will it develop areas of low pressure and move them across | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
the British Isles, those areas of low pressure | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
will potentially turn pretty intense, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
with some heavy rain and some strong winds. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
More on that, to come, for the time being, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
we're sticking with this fairly quiet theme. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Wednesday - quite a cloudy day, particularly in the south. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:50
Some outbreaks of rain along this weak weather front | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
in northern England, North Wales. Best chance of brightness | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
for Northern Ireland and Scotland. Quite breezy in the north, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
with a few showers, and for most it will be mild - | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
double-digit temperatures for the most part. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
And as we head through Wednesday night, we'll see this weak | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
weather front slipping its way just that little bit further south. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:09
Some very misty, murky conditions for hills in the west, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
quite drizzly as well. Some clear spells further north, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
where it will be, I suppose, on the chilly side but generally | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
a mild start to Thursday morning. So this weather front | 0:01:19 | 0:01:23
will just continue to wriggle and writhe around | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
as we go through Thursday but as this area of high pressure | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
builds its way in, it will tend to squeeze much of the life | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
out of the weather front, so it will mostly be light and patchy rain, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
which at this stage looks likely to be moving northwards | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
and eastwards again on Thursday. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
With that, a lot of cloud, some misty, murky, drizzly conditions | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
for some of the hills. Brightest of the weather up towards | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
the north-east, where it will also be on the cool side. For many, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
again though, it will be mild. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
Now, on Friday, remember that area of high pressure | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
is squeezing the life out of that weather front, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
so actually although there will be large amounts of cloud, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
there will be a lot of dry weather too, best of the brightness | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
up towards the north-east, and this area of high pressure | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
is still with us as we head into the start of the weekend. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
But...this frontal system pushing in from the north-west is just the | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
first sign of that more active weather that | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
we'll be starting to feel the effects of as we get into | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
Christmas and beyond. It will bring some rain into northern areas | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
during Saturday, increasingly brisk winds as well. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
Still mild at this stage, you'll notice. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
Those winds picking up even further as we go into Christmas Eve. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
This weather front only making slow progress southwards | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
and eastwards, the further south you are it should be largely dry. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Still pretty cloudy, could be some mist and fog patches around as well. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
Now, as we move out of Christmas Eve towards Christmas Day, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
here comes that more active weather. The jet stream by this stage | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
will be pushing that bit further south. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
What that's going to do is spin up an area of low pressure. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
As that drifts its way eastwards, for a time | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
we'll draw mild air in from the south, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
but on the back edge of that low we'll start to get into | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
something colder for a time. Now, this transition is likely to | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
happen around Christmas Day. There is a bit of uncertainty | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
about the timing, and even once that has happened, notice further | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
areas of low pressure developing in the Atlantic, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
so more unsettled weather to come. So, for Christmas week | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
there will be some colder spells, it certainly won't be cold | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
all the time, but there will be some heavy rain at times, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
some gales as well. So, quiet for the time being, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:25
then we have Christmas, and then things look much, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
much more unsettled. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
