Hello there. Our weather looks pretty quiet for the next few days,

0:00:020:00:04

by this time next week, it will be much more disturbed,

0:00:040:00:07

much more unsettled, and between now and then, of course,

0:00:070:00:11

we have Christmas.

0:00:110:00:13

Now, the jet stream, the winds high up in the atmosphere,

0:00:130:00:16

is currently sitting well to the north of the British Isles.

0:00:160:00:20

And that's driving all the weather systems, all the areas

0:00:200:00:22

of low pressure, well away to the north.

0:00:220:00:25

Now, by Christmas Day, you'll notice the position of the jet stream

0:00:250:00:28

is much further south. It will also be much stronger,

0:00:280:00:31

so not only will it develop areas of low pressure and move them across

0:00:310:00:35

the British Isles, those areas of low pressure

0:00:350:00:38

will potentially turn pretty intense,

0:00:380:00:41

with some heavy rain and some strong winds.

0:00:410:00:43

More on that, to come, for the time being,

0:00:430:00:45

we're sticking with this fairly quiet theme.

0:00:450:00:47

Wednesday - quite a cloudy day, particularly in the south.

0:00:470:00:50

Some outbreaks of rain along this weak weather front

0:00:500:00:52

in northern England, North Wales. Best chance of brightness

0:00:520:00:55

for Northern Ireland and Scotland. Quite breezy in the north,

0:00:550:00:58

with a few showers, and for most it will be mild -

0:00:580:01:01

double-digit temperatures for the most part.

0:01:010:01:03

And as we head through Wednesday night, we'll see this weak

0:01:030:01:06

weather front slipping its way just that little bit further south.

0:01:060:01:09

Some very misty, murky conditions for hills in the west,

0:01:090:01:13

quite drizzly as well. Some clear spells further north,

0:01:130:01:16

where it will be, I suppose, on the chilly side but generally

0:01:160:01:19

a mild start to Thursday morning. So this weather front

0:01:190:01:23

will just continue to wriggle and writhe around

0:01:230:01:25

as we go through Thursday but as this area of high pressure

0:01:250:01:28

builds its way in, it will tend to squeeze much of the life

0:01:280:01:31

out of the weather front, so it will mostly be light and patchy rain,

0:01:310:01:35

which at this stage looks likely to be moving northwards

0:01:350:01:38

and eastwards again on Thursday.

0:01:380:01:40

With that, a lot of cloud, some misty, murky, drizzly conditions

0:01:400:01:43

for some of the hills. Brightest of the weather up towards

0:01:430:01:46

the north-east, where it will also be on the cool side. For many,

0:01:460:01:49

again though, it will be mild.

0:01:490:01:51

Now, on Friday, remember that area of high pressure

0:01:510:01:53

is squeezing the life out of that weather front,

0:01:530:01:56

so actually although there will be large amounts of cloud,

0:01:560:01:59

there will be a lot of dry weather too, best of the brightness

0:01:590:02:01

up towards the north-east, and this area of high pressure

0:02:010:02:05

is still with us as we head into the start of the weekend.

0:02:050:02:08

But...this frontal system pushing in from the north-west is just the

0:02:080:02:12

first sign of that more active weather that

0:02:120:02:15

we'll be starting to feel the effects of as we get into

0:02:150:02:18

Christmas and beyond. It will bring some rain into northern areas

0:02:180:02:21

during Saturday, increasingly brisk winds as well.

0:02:210:02:25

Still mild at this stage, you'll notice.

0:02:250:02:27

Those winds picking up even further as we go into Christmas Eve.

0:02:270:02:30

This weather front only making slow progress southwards

0:02:300:02:33

and eastwards, the further south you are it should be largely dry.

0:02:330:02:36

Still pretty cloudy, could be some mist and fog patches around as well.

0:02:360:02:40

Now, as we move out of Christmas Eve towards Christmas Day,

0:02:400:02:43

here comes that more active weather. The jet stream by this stage

0:02:430:02:46

will be pushing that bit further south.

0:02:460:02:50

What that's going to do is spin up an area of low pressure.

0:02:500:02:53

As that drifts its way eastwards, for a time

0:02:530:02:55

we'll draw mild air in from the south,

0:02:550:02:57

but on the back edge of that low we'll start to get into

0:02:570:03:00

something colder for a time. Now, this transition is likely to

0:03:000:03:03

happen around Christmas Day. There is a bit of uncertainty

0:03:030:03:06

about the timing, and even once that has happened, notice further

0:03:060:03:10

areas of low pressure developing in the Atlantic,

0:03:100:03:12

so more unsettled weather to come. So, for Christmas week

0:03:120:03:16

there will be some colder spells, it certainly won't be cold

0:03:160:03:19

all the time, but there will be some heavy rain at times,

0:03:190:03:21

some gales as well. So, quiet for the time being,

0:03:210:03:25

then we have Christmas, and then things look much,

0:03:250:03:27

much more unsettled.
