Hello there, we'll take a look at the all-important weather | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
for the Christmas week a little later on. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
There are some major changes on the way. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Before then, though, very quiet start to the week. | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
Got high pressure dominating across much of England and Wales. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
Stronger winds towards the north-west, ahead of that | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
weather front there. But it's underneath the high pressure | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
that we've seen a lot of fog forming. In some areas, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
it didn't really clear away all day on Monday. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
And it's just becoming more widespread. Central, southern | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
and eastern England - it will have a knock-on effect on the roads | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
but possibly onto some of those airports as well. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Now, gradually most of that fog will tend to lift | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
as cloud tends to roll over the top from the west. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
But some areas - East Midlands, East Anglia, the South East, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
it's going to be a very slow process. Maybe some sunshine | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
coming through but equally the fog may linger into the afternoon, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
so a cold day here. Contrast that with 14, if we get some sunshine, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
along the Moray Coast and generally much milder for | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Scotland, Northern Ireland, western parts of England and Wales, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
where we are more likely to get some hill fog rather than | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
fog at lower levels. And it shouldn't be quite as dense either. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
Not as foggy across these southern areas overnight. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
We've got this band of rain moving southwards across Scotland | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
into Northern Ireland. Ahead of it, then we're going to find | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
temperatures four or five degrees - it turns a touch chillier in | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
the far north of Scotland, actually, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
once that band of rain has cleared through. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
And it's this weather front here, it's very weak - | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
it's going to get stuck eventually on Wednesday, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
probably across northern England, Wales, the Midlands. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
South of that, milder conditions on Wednesday, cloudy conditions. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
And to the north, if we do get some sunshine in northern Scotland | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
it's because we're in some colder air but only briefly. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
That weather front still hanging around across the UK | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
overnight and into Thursday. A little bit further south, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
probably at this stage, or at least heading that way during the day | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
on Thursday. Allowing more sunshine to develop across Scotland | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
and Northern Ireland, possibly northern England, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
even into the Midlands and North Wales. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
Much milder but cloudy and damp further south across the UK. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
That weather system is just going to get swallowed up by this | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
building area of high pressure on Thursday and into Friday, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
so weakening, the rain petering out, we're left with a lot | 0:01:59 | 0:02:03
of dry weather on Friday. Left with a lot of cloud, mind you. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
This time, the best chance of seeing any sunshine | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
will be across more eastern areas of the UK. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
For many, again light winds. Not expecting the fog problems | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
because there will probably be more cloud, less clear skies. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
And this is how we look as we head into the weekend, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
just before Christmas Day itself - high pressure sitting over | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
the near Continent, dominating southern parts of the UK. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Weather systems and areas of low pressure running to the | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
north of Scotland, threatening some rain but in between | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
we've go this mild west to south-westerly wind | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
and it will be windy. Now, as we head further into | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
the Christmas week, we're going to find that milder west to | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
south-westerly getting replaced by some colder air that's | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
going to come down from the north-west and that will | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
ultimately lead to an area of low pressure sitting to the west | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
of the UK. Whilst the low pressure is to the west of the UK, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
we're going to draw up some winds from the south, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
so that's a milder wind, more likely to bring cloud and rain. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
But eventually, that area of low pressure is going to track | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
across the UK and as it heads towards the east of us, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
so we draw down winds from the north | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
and this is when it really starts to get cold. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
Now there is a small chance of seeing some snow perhaps over | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
the Scottish mountains on Christmas Day itself but | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
otherwise it's going to be quite windy. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
It's also going to be wet. Rain to begin with | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
but then as the cold air arrives after Christmas day, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
so we could well see some sleet and some snow. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
How soon that colder air arrives, not quite sure. See you again. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
