Hello. After Christmas, it looks like our weather pattern

0:00:020:00:04

will change, and the change comes about

0:00:040:00:06

because of a change in the position of the jet stream.

0:00:060:00:09

Now, right now, and over the next few days, the jet stream is going to

0:00:090:00:13

be in this sort of position, so it's steering to the north of the UK.

0:00:130:00:17

It keeps the colder air at bay and it keeps us in this mild air.

0:00:170:00:21

Atlantic winds heading our way, bringing a lot of cloud,

0:00:210:00:24

as we have seen over the past few days around the top of that

0:00:240:00:27

area of high pressure.

0:00:270:00:28

We probably will see more rain arriving from northern areas in

0:00:280:00:31

the next few days, as that weather front begins to get a bit closer.

0:00:310:00:35

And that probably starts really on Saturday with rain

0:00:350:00:37

arriving across the north and west of Scotland.

0:00:370:00:39

Ahead of it, though, with some stronger winds,

0:00:390:00:41

we may see a bit more sunshine in Scotland, Northern Ireland,

0:00:410:00:44

perhaps into the north-east of England.

0:00:440:00:46

Some glimpses of sunshine further south

0:00:460:00:48

where the winds are lighter but on the whole, it will be a cloudy day.

0:00:480:00:51

It will be a mild day, there'll be a stronger breeze,

0:00:510:00:53

temperatures 10 to 12 degrees.

0:00:530:00:56

As we head overnight, we've still got those west to south-westerly

0:00:560:00:59

winds, we've still got a lot of cloud, not as much mist

0:00:590:01:01

and fog over the hills because the wind is a bit stronger.

0:01:010:01:04

That rain having moved southwards starts to move northwards again,

0:01:040:01:07

really, it's all because there's a bit of a wave on the weather

0:01:070:01:10

front which will alter the position, north and south.

0:01:100:01:13

There, you can see that wave on that front there.

0:01:130:01:16

As that wave tip moves away, so the cold front, the rain-bearing

0:01:160:01:20

cold front starts to move south again, this time for Christmas Eve.

0:01:200:01:24

So, we'll see it turning wetter in Scotland, some heavy rain in

0:01:240:01:27

western Scotland, and we'll see more rain arriving in Northern Ireland.

0:01:270:01:30

For England and Wales, a bit of drizzle here and there,

0:01:300:01:32

quite cloudy again, as you can see.

0:01:320:01:34

But we could see some sunshine for eastern areas of England.

0:01:340:01:37

It will be stronger winds for England and Wales than Scotland

0:01:370:01:40

and Northern Ireland,

0:01:400:01:41

the temperatures pretty much across the board 10 or 11 degrees.

0:01:410:01:45

Now, for the big day itself, Christmas Day.

0:01:450:01:47

We've got some windy weather for England and Wales,

0:01:470:01:50

ahead of some rain,

0:01:500:01:51

this band of rain that's moving across Northern Ireland over

0:01:510:01:54

the Irish Sea into England and Wales and still affecting Scotland.

0:01:540:01:57

The air gets a bit colder here,

0:01:570:01:58

so there may be some snow over the Scottish mountains.

0:01:580:02:02

But it's not really cold air

0:02:020:02:03

that comes in behind this weather front that sweeps rain overnight,

0:02:030:02:06

we've got more rain coming in on the next one.

0:02:060:02:09

But what we are seeing is the start of the change to something

0:02:090:02:12

much more unsettled.

0:02:120:02:13

So, one area of rain moves through,

0:02:130:02:15

we get some sunshine for a while on Boxing Day.

0:02:150:02:17

Later in the day, we get rain coming into Northern Ireland

0:02:170:02:19

and Wales and the south west.

0:02:190:02:21

Temperatures will be a bit lower on Boxing Day but nothing

0:02:210:02:23

particularly cold.

0:02:230:02:24

Everything moving on fairly quickly.

0:02:240:02:26

So, that first area of low pressure moves through,

0:02:260:02:29

things become drier and brighter on Wednesday,

0:02:290:02:31

a tuck of something a little bit colder so temperatures will be

0:02:310:02:34

low at three to five across the northern half of the UK.

0:02:340:02:37

So, as we head towards New Year,

0:02:370:02:39

we're seeing this change in the weather pattern.

0:02:390:02:42

We can relate it to the jet stream.

0:02:420:02:44

You can see this surge of stronger winds running through that jet,

0:02:440:02:49

which is further south.

0:02:490:02:51

Now, the jet stream picks up areas of low pressure,

0:02:510:02:54

drives them towards the UK, one after another,

0:02:540:02:56

and those areas of low pressure are further south, not moving to the

0:02:560:03:00

north of the UK as we are seeing now but moving right over the UK.

0:03:000:03:04

So every now and again,

0:03:040:03:06

you tuck in some colder air on the northern edge,

0:03:060:03:09

and that means the chance perhaps of some snow.

0:03:090:03:11

But the pattern is much more unsettled, much more changeable.

0:03:110:03:15

We'll have some stronger winds, perhaps gales at times.

0:03:150:03:18

For the most part, it will be rain from time to time

0:03:180:03:20

but where we see these tucks of colder air, colder spells, there is

0:03:200:03:24

the chance of some snow perhaps across the north.

0:03:240:03:27

That's it, goodbye.
