Hello. Say what you like about dreaming of a white Christmas

0:00:020:00:04

but at least this mild and quiet weather is kind to anyone

0:00:040:00:06

making pre-Christmas travel.

0:00:060:00:08

But things could change right after Christmas Day

0:00:080:00:12

as it turns colder and there is a risk of some snow.

0:00:120:00:15

This is the mild air we have now through Christmas Eve

0:00:150:00:17

into Christmas Day, but late on on Christmas Day,

0:00:170:00:20

but more especially going into Boxing Day,

0:00:200:00:23

notice the colder air starting to move south across the UK again,

0:00:230:00:26

and it's Boxing Day and a few days beyond in that colder air,

0:00:260:00:29

there is a risk of some snow, as I'll show you in a moment.

0:00:290:00:32

Now, this for Christmas Eve is the mild weather.

0:00:320:00:35

Around this area, high pressure,

0:00:350:00:36

the flow of air coming in from the Atlantic, still a moist flow,

0:00:360:00:40

still plenty of cloud and still this weather front, which even

0:00:400:00:42

into Christmas Day, will be hanging around the same part of the UK.

0:00:420:00:46

So, here is the rain from it on Christmas Eve.

0:00:460:00:48

Several hours of quite heavy rain in western Scotland.

0:00:480:00:51

In the hills, we could see up to 100 millimetres.

0:00:510:00:53

Turning wetter across more of Northern Ireland,

0:00:530:00:55

that rain pushing into Cumbria, where it will be quite heavy.

0:00:550:00:59

To the south of that, mainly dry, often cloudy.

0:00:590:01:01

North of it, a few brighter breaks into northern Scotland.

0:01:010:01:04

And on through Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day,

0:01:040:01:07

overnight, notice still some outbreaks of rain then across

0:01:070:01:10

Northern Ireland into Scotland and the far north of England.

0:01:100:01:13

South of that, a bit of patchy light rain and drizzle,

0:01:130:01:15

and nearly for all of us, as Christmas Day begins, it will be

0:01:150:01:18

frost free, it will be mild, it will be a green Christmas Day.

0:01:180:01:21

And still that weather front

0:01:210:01:23

is close to Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:01:230:01:26

but it is only gradually later on Christmas Day into Boxing Day

0:01:260:01:29

finally starts to move further east.

0:01:290:01:31

But notice, as we go on through Christmas Day

0:01:310:01:34

still some uncertainty about the detail and position,

0:01:340:01:36

but it's going to hang around for quite some time.

0:01:360:01:38

Central belt, southern Scotland, the east of Northern Ireland,

0:01:380:01:41

gradually pushing into Wales and western England later in the day.

0:01:410:01:45

And it is the boundary between the very mild Christmas Day that

0:01:450:01:48

a large part of England and Wales will have

0:01:480:01:50

and a colder one for those parts of Scotland

0:01:500:01:52

and Northern Ireland turning drier.

0:01:520:01:54

And as we look at things through Christmas Day night

0:01:540:01:56

and into Boxing Day, as this system clears away

0:01:560:01:59

and the colder air just tucks in behind,

0:01:590:02:01

we could see some late snow on Christmas Day

0:02:010:02:04

into Boxing Day morning

0:02:040:02:06

on some of the hills as it pulls away eastwards.

0:02:060:02:08

And then on Boxing Day, once that has gone,

0:02:080:02:10

we have this colder flow of air.

0:02:100:02:12

Remember that cold air moving south across us,

0:02:120:02:15

single figure temperatures.

0:02:150:02:16

And then, this weather system coming into the south west, here

0:02:160:02:19

is this area of low pressure going from Boxing Day and into Wednesday.

0:02:190:02:23

And it's from this area of low pressure, pushing that moisture

0:02:230:02:26

into the cold air, we could see some snow across some

0:02:260:02:30

southern parts, maybe not just on hills, that is one to watch.

0:02:300:02:33

During Wednesday, that clears away eastwards, wintry showers,

0:02:330:02:36

particularly to coastal areas on Wednesday, and for some of us,

0:02:360:02:39

low single figures for the top temperature.

0:02:390:02:41

And then on Thursday, that cold air, frosty start,

0:02:410:02:43

another weather system targeting southern parts of the UK

0:02:430:02:47

and again we could see some snowfall out of this, initially

0:02:470:02:50

and particularly to hills as it moves in.

0:02:500:02:52

So, just bear in mind for a time right after Christmas,

0:02:520:02:56

there could be some travel impacts from wintry weather.

0:02:560:02:58

But as we go into the following weekend,

0:02:580:03:00

the last weekend of 2017, it is low pressure dominating things,

0:03:000:03:05

though things turn a little bit milder once again.

0:03:050:03:08

It will be unsettled the last few days of the year

0:03:080:03:10

into the start of 2018,

0:03:100:03:12

we're more looking at rain rather than anything else,

0:03:120:03:14

and some northern hills could see a bit of snow out

0:03:140:03:16

as the weather system is moving through.

0:03:160:03:18

But we are concerned then about the strength of wind which could be

0:03:180:03:21

disruptive from the weather systems moving through

0:03:210:03:24

right at the end of the year into the start of 2018.

0:03:240:03:26

And that is your latest Weather For The Week Ahead.
