Hello. Well, very mild out there. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
For the last couple of weeks or so, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
we have been forecasting a very mild Christmas. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
Indeed, the temperatures are well above the average | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
for the time of the year | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
right across the country right now. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
It'll remain like it throughout the big day itself. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
So staying very mild across the UK. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
The winds are streaming in from the southwest, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
carrying rain-bearing clouds as well. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
For some of us, additionally, it's very soggy. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
But out towards the northwest of the Atlantic here, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
the winds are changing direction. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
The air coming in from the Arctic, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
so there is that little bit of cold air | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
tucking in behind this mild plume of air. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
That is a sign that, as we head | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
towards Boxing Day and the days after, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
things are going to turn just that little bit colder. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
But for Christmas Day itself, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
it's very mild across England and Wales. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
There's some rain on the way too. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Those temperatures will be double figures | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
right across England and Wales. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
In the Lowlands of Scotland, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
dipping down to 7 later in the day. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
You can see in the far north of Scotland there, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
4 or 5 degrees. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
But a wet end to Christmas Day | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
for many of us across the UK. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
It does look as though the rain | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
could even turn to snow, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
at least for a time there across | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
the southern Uplands of Scotland, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
perhaps the Highlands as well. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
As we see slightly cold air | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
from the north tucking into this weather system, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
so it could just about be the case | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
that on Christmas Day in the evening, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
we will get a little bit of snow, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
but mostly across the hills. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
Boxing Day itself, still mild air across the UK, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
but that colder air starting to push in into the UK. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:28
We'll also see one weather front moving away, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
another one coming in. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
We're in between weather systems on Boxing Day itself. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
Let's see what it looks like, then, in the morning. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
There could be a little bit | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
of sleetiness around some of the northern areas, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
but then a lot of sunshine around. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
Could be quite frosty first thing in the morning. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
You can see the temperatures are into single figures. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
But very quickly, later on Boxing day, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
we'll see another little area of low pressure | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
that's going to tuck in into the south here, | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
also mix in with the cold air. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
On the northern edge of this area of rain, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
across the hills of Wales, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
maybe the Chilterns, the Cotswolds, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
we could see a little bit of sleet or snow, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
falling mostly, as I say, across the hills. | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
So a very damp if not wet start | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
also on Wednesday morning | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
across the southeast of the country. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
Again, there could be a little bit | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
of sleetiness around, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
as we see the cold air coming in from the north. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
So Christmas itself is mild, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:17
but then Boxing Day and Wednesday, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
we start to see the colder air, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
at least temporarily, coming in. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
You can just about see a little bit of snow | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
there mixing in. At this stage, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
we don't think it's a big deal. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
For most of us, Wednesday afternoon | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
is going to be bright and pretty cold, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
with temperatures of around 3 to say 6 or 7 degrees. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
On Thursday, another weather front | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
perhaps affecting south-western areas, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
but you can see then on Thursday | 0:02:39 | 0:02:40
it's largely a dry day across the UK, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
with a few showers in the north, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
temperatures of around 3-5 degrees. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
Then, come Friday, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:48
those winds start to change direction again | 0:02:48 | 0:02:51
and they come in from a south-westerly direction. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
That means that, once more, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
those temperatures will start to rise. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
Next weekend, we're back into that mild air mass, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
so back the wind comes from the far southwest. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
But, again, a little bit of cold air tucking in behind. | 0:03:03 | 0:03:06
The thinking is that New Year's Eve will see a low pressure approaching, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
and into New Year's Day - this spells very wet, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
very windy weather across the country. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
So quite a stormy, potentially, period into 2018. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
At the very least, it'll be unsettled | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
with certainly some wind on the way, gales possibly as well, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
and perhaps a bit of snow | 0:03:24 | 0:03:25
across northern hills as well. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
That's it from me. Bye-bye. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28 |
