Hello. Well, after a very mild Christmas, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
things are set to turn a little bit colder from Boxing Day, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
in fact, and there's also a chance of waking up to some snow | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
across the southern uplands of Scotland and the Highlands, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
and I think for all of us, it is going to turn colder on Boxing Day. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
Now, at the moment, | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
we still have south-westerly winds affecting southern parts of the UK, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
a weather front approaching, bringing some rain, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
in fact Boxing Day will be very rainy, very windy in the south. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
But the colder air is starting to tuck back in again, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
and the mild air that we've had during Christmas Day itself | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
is being pushed away towards the east, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
so Boxing Day starts off cold, icy in places, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
some wintry weather there across the Pennines, maybe. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
The southern uplands of Scotland | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
possibly waking up to 2-5 centimetres of snow, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
and some snow further north in the Highlands, as well. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
But you can't miss this here out south-west. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
This is a weather front which is also swinging in off the Atlantic. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
A wet day for Plymouth, for Cardiff as well. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
And I want to point out what happens with this weather front | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
as it slides across the UK | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
during the course of the evening of Boxing Day. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
Look at that. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:05
Some snow develops across the hills of Wales, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
maybe the Peak District, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
possibly the bottom end of the Pennines, as well. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
I don't think there's going to be any snow in Birmingham necessarily, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:15
but we are going to see at least some sleet in some towns and cities, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:19
and most of the snow will be falling across the hills. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
And then as we head into Wednesday, the mild air is pushed away, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
and we are well and truly in that colder air mass | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
coming in from the north. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
And when I say colder, it is colder compared to what we've had. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
This is not necessarily desperately cold, arctic air. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:36
So, first thing in the morning, a little bit of wintriness around, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
maybe across parts of the east Midlands, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:40
maybe even the south-east as well, but that low pressure, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
and the weather front pulls away, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
and overall, Wednesday is looking bright and cold | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
after a frosty start in many northern and western areas. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
Then on Thursday, we are actually in between weather systems, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
so the low pressure there pulls away out into Scandinavia. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:59
Another one is knocking on our doorstep, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
but we're in between the weather systems here, | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
in that colder air stream, so once again, on Thursday, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
we're waking up to chilly weather, frosty start for some of us, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
but there will be a lot of crisp sunshine around, as well. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
And this is what it looks like. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:13
Six degrees maybe in London, briefly touching six. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
More like three degrees across many northern cities, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
and maybe a little bit of rain later on in the day | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
into the tip of Cornwall there. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Beyond that, into Friday, as we approach the weekend, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
a very different story. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
Low pressure starts to line up out there in the Atlantic, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
being pushed by an increasingly strong jet stream. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
That means that the weather | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
is starting to turn more and more turbulent. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
With that, milder air returns, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
temperatures back into double figures with rain sweeping through. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
Looks like Saturday, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
there might be brief windows of brighter weather, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
but look at those values, 13 degrees, strong winds as well, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
very gusty around the Pennines, too, and then as we head into Sunday, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
New Year's Eve, we're still in that mild Atlantic air, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
but with that, a strong rush of wind, as well, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
so a risk of gale force winds for some of us, as well. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
And the schematic really depicts | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
what the start of 2018 is going to look like. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
We'll see low pressure very close to the UK | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
with a powerful jet stream, and that can only mean one or two things. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
It certainly means very unsettled weather, windy weather, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
and at times, there will be spells of rain. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
So, very mild at the moment, briefly colder Boxing Day, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
and then towards 2018, milder again. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
