Hello there. I'm going to end this forecast | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
by talking about cold weather returning. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
But I'll start by talking about the fourth named storm | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
of the season that's going to arrive | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
on the final day of this year. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
Coming from this area of cloud, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
it's a deepening area of low pressure. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
You can see the cloud head there. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
The centre of the storm, Storm Dylan, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
named by the Irish Met Service, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
will get very close to Northern Ireland | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
and then run across Scotland. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
So the Met Office have issued an amber wind warning. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
We're looking at some very strong winds across the southern half | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
but the strongest winds, by the early morning, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
across the north of Northern Ireland | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
and the southwest of Scotland - | 0:00:41 | 0:00:42
gusts of 70mph, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
plus there'll be some wet weather | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
in Scotland in the morning. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
In the afternoon, though, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
the winds will have calmed down everywhere. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
There'll be some sunshine around. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
There'll be these bands of showers that come in. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
Those could be potentially heavy. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
A range of temperatures again - north, south. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:57
Another cold day across Scotland. Much milder across southern England. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:01
If you're celebrating new year, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
expect some showers around. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
By this stage, though, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
the winds very much lighter across Scotland. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
It will be turning a bit colder as well. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
As we head into the first day of the new year, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
we could see a spell of rain coming | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
across the southern parts of England, | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
South Wales, for a while. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
Really strong winds through the Channel. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
Then some sunshine following on behind, | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
quite a few showers packing into Scotland, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Northern Ireland and the northwest of England. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
It gets a little bit colder. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
Nothing too cold just yet. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
A little bump of high pressure will tend to fizzle away | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
most of those showers, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
but only because we've got a big low pressure | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
coming across the Atlantic and these weather systems too. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
This low is a fairly deep one, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
but the centre of it is much further north. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
And we get these bands of rain coming across the UK, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
together with some stronger winds. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
That rain could be quite heavy. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
It takes a while to clear away from eastern areas. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
Sunshine and showers follow into Wales and the southwest, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
where it's going to be mild. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:56
But, again, further north, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
the chance in the colder air in Scotland | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
of seeing some snow over the higher ground. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
That area of lower pressure gets elongated | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and stays to the northwest. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
Coming around the base of it, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
we get another area of low pressure that's going to deepen. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Looks like the strongest of the winds | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
will be more towards the south of the UK, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
coming in to continental Europe, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
but it could be very windy for a while, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
some strong winds, some rain too, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
before things then turn quieter | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
by the end of the day | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
and we get some sunshine and showers. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Those two areas of low pressure | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
then sort of wander their way into Europe. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
Another area of low pressure | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
coming in off the Atlantic for Thursday. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
So a very unsettled theme | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
for the first few days of the new year. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
Probably in between weather systems | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
for most of Thursday, so for most of the day, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
it should be fine and dry with some sunshine. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
But we take that unsettled weather into the weekend. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
We have to look at what's happening across the other side | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
of the Atlantic with the jet stream diving further | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
south across the eastern side of North America. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
We're going to get more amplification of the jet stream. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
That will propagate across the Atlantic. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
It looks like the jet stream is going to be to the | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
south of the UK, or at least heading that way, next weekend, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
then we're going to get into some colder air. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Then the question is how long will that colder air stay? | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
It means there'll be some longer drier spells, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
still the threat of some rain and some snow for a while, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
but the main thing is it's going to be turning colder, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
and some models suggest | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
perhaps an easterly wind for a time. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
That's it. See you later. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:28 |
