Hello there. I'm going to end this forecast

0:00:020:00:04

by talking about cold weather returning.

0:00:040:00:05

But I'll start by talking about the fourth named storm

0:00:050:00:08

of the season that's going to arrive

0:00:080:00:10

on the final day of this year.

0:00:100:00:13

Coming from this area of cloud,

0:00:130:00:15

it's a deepening area of low pressure.

0:00:150:00:17

You can see the cloud head there.

0:00:170:00:19

The centre of the storm, Storm Dylan,

0:00:190:00:21

named by the Irish Met Service,

0:00:210:00:22

will get very close to Northern Ireland

0:00:220:00:25

and then run across Scotland.

0:00:250:00:27

So the Met Office have issued an amber wind warning.

0:00:270:00:31

We're looking at some very strong winds across the southern half

0:00:310:00:34

of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the far north of England,

0:00:340:00:37

but the strongest winds, by the early morning,

0:00:370:00:39

across the north of Northern Ireland

0:00:390:00:41

and the southwest of Scotland -

0:00:410:00:42

gusts of 70mph,

0:00:420:00:43

plus there'll be some wet weather

0:00:430:00:45

in Scotland in the morning.

0:00:450:00:46

In the afternoon, though,

0:00:460:00:47

the winds will have calmed down everywhere.

0:00:470:00:49

There'll be some sunshine around.

0:00:490:00:51

There'll be these bands of showers that come in.

0:00:510:00:53

Those could be potentially heavy.

0:00:530:00:56

A range of temperatures again - north, south.

0:00:560:00:57

Another cold day across Scotland. Much milder across southern England.

0:00:570:01:01

If you're celebrating new year,

0:01:010:01:03

expect some showers around.

0:01:030:01:05

By this stage, though,

0:01:050:01:06

the winds very much lighter across Scotland.

0:01:060:01:08

It will be turning a bit colder as well.

0:01:080:01:11

As we head into the first day of the new year,

0:01:110:01:14

we could see a spell of rain coming

0:01:140:01:15

across the southern parts of England,

0:01:150:01:17

South Wales, for a while.

0:01:170:01:18

Really strong winds through the Channel.

0:01:180:01:20

Then some sunshine following on behind,

0:01:200:01:22

quite a few showers packing into Scotland,

0:01:220:01:24

Northern Ireland and the northwest of England.

0:01:240:01:26

It gets a little bit colder.

0:01:260:01:28

Nothing too cold just yet.

0:01:280:01:31

A little bump of high pressure will tend to fizzle away

0:01:310:01:33

most of those showers,

0:01:330:01:35

but only because we've got a big low pressure

0:01:350:01:37

coming across the Atlantic and these weather systems too.

0:01:370:01:40

This low is a fairly deep one,

0:01:400:01:42

but the centre of it is much further north.

0:01:420:01:44

And we get these bands of rain coming across the UK,

0:01:440:01:47

together with some stronger winds.

0:01:470:01:48

That rain could be quite heavy.

0:01:480:01:50

It takes a while to clear away from eastern areas.

0:01:500:01:52

Sunshine and showers follow into Wales and the southwest,

0:01:520:01:55

where it's going to be mild.

0:01:550:01:56

But, again, further north,

0:01:560:01:57

the chance in the colder air in Scotland

0:01:570:01:59

of seeing some snow over the higher ground.

0:01:590:02:02

That area of lower pressure gets elongated

0:02:020:02:04

and stays to the northwest.

0:02:040:02:05

Coming around the base of it,

0:02:050:02:07

we get another area of low pressure that's going to deepen.

0:02:070:02:10

Looks like the strongest of the winds

0:02:100:02:12

will be more towards the south of the UK,

0:02:120:02:14

coming in to continental Europe,

0:02:140:02:17

but it could be very windy for a while,

0:02:170:02:19

some strong winds, some rain too,

0:02:190:02:20

before things then turn quieter

0:02:200:02:22

by the end of the day

0:02:220:02:24

and we get some sunshine and showers.

0:02:240:02:26

Those two areas of low pressure

0:02:260:02:28

then sort of wander their way into Europe.

0:02:280:02:31

Another area of low pressure

0:02:310:02:32

coming in off the Atlantic for Thursday.

0:02:320:02:34

So a very unsettled theme

0:02:340:02:36

for the first few days of the new year.

0:02:360:02:39

Probably in between weather systems

0:02:390:02:41

for most of Thursday, so for most of the day,

0:02:410:02:43

it should be fine and dry with some sunshine.

0:02:430:02:46

But we take that unsettled weather into the weekend.

0:02:460:02:49

We have to look at what's happening across the other side

0:02:490:02:51

of the Atlantic with the jet stream diving further

0:02:510:02:54

south across the eastern side of North America.

0:02:540:02:56

We're going to get more amplification of the jet stream.

0:02:560:02:59

That will propagate across the Atlantic.

0:02:590:03:01

It looks like the jet stream is going to be to the

0:03:010:03:04

south of the UK, or at least heading that way, next weekend,

0:03:040:03:07

then we're going to get into some colder air.

0:03:070:03:10

Then the question is how long will that colder air stay?

0:03:100:03:14

It means there'll be some longer drier spells,

0:03:140:03:17

still the threat of some rain and some snow for a while,

0:03:170:03:19

but the main thing is it's going to be turning colder,

0:03:190:03:22

and some models suggest

0:03:220:03:24

perhaps an easterly wind for a time.

0:03:240:03:27

That's it. See you later.
