Hello. The Arctic blast across North America has been well documented. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
Well, I'm pleased to say the storm has moved away. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
Slowly but surely, things will get a little less cold as that | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
storm pushes off towards Greenland. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
We've been asked here at the Weather Centre, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
is it heading in our direction, and the straight answer is no. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
We're still under this influence of high pressure, and for us Sunday is | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
going to be cold, clear but quite quiet, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
with the storm staying out into the Atlantic. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
So, it's going to be a hard frost first thing on Sunday morning, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
temperatures in rural parts of sheltered glens in Scotland | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
well down, as low as minus ten, maybe even lower, but eventually | 0:00:34 | 0:00:38
we'll see some sparkling skies, some lovely sunshine for all of us. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
A little bit more of a breeze down towards the south-east, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
but temperatures will slowly recover here, four to seven degrees. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
Still a little bit disappointing in Scotland, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
zero to three as a daytime maximum. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
We could see clear skies here across the north | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
and a hard frost again as we head into Monday morning, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
but again the breeze will strengthen, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
and down towards the south and east there'll be a little more cloud, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:03
so temperatures will hold up first thing Monday morning, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
slightly above freezing. Not particularly warm, is it? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
But further north, again it's a cold and frosty start. But on Monday, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
that's where we're likely to see the best of the sunshine, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
through Scotland and Northern Ireland | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
and maybe northern England, because that easterly wind | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
is driving in more cloud across England and Wales. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
It's going to feel cold and drab, a January afternoon, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
not particularly pleasant, four to six degrees but feeling colder. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
The best of the sunshine may be further north and west. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:31
As we move out of Monday into Tuesday, it gets a little bit messy. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
We still keep a south-easterly breeze, which will keep some cloud | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
and a cool feel along North Sea coasts, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
but at the same time this weather front is trying to | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
push in from the Atlantic, and that will drag with it ahead of it | 0:01:42 | 0:01:46
a southerly wind, so slightly milder air. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
So a real west/east divide on Tuesday. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Along that east coast, where it stays cloudy and cool, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
four or five degrees. Further south and west, double digits return. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:58
Now, this is going to be the difference between this | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
weather front turning to snow or rain. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
Because it's bumping into slightly milder air, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
we're not too concerned about it in terms of snowfall. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Any snow that we do get from it will be to higher | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
ground across Scotland, and that weather front is going to linger | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
for quite some time on Wednesday, particularly up into the north. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
So it'll grind to a halt, it'll be rain, snow to higher ground. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
Elsewhere a slightly milder feel, but a fair amount of cloud. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
The showery bits and pieces continue for much of Wednesday afternoon. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:26
Signs of something a little bit brighter by the end of the day. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
A brief ridge will take over on Thursday. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:32
So a west/east divide, really, on Thursday, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
the best of the sunshine further west after a chilly start. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
Further east we keep a little bit of cloud coming off the North Sea, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
so here temperatures slightly disappointing. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
Now, further ahead, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:45
it looks as though we're going to see a bit of a west/east | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
divide developing, with a high pressure system | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
sitting in Scandinavia keeping things relatively quiet. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
The jet stream has been quite weak, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
but there are indications at the end of the week that we'll see | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
a strengthening jet, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
and that could try to push in low pressures from the west. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
That means that the further north and west you live, there is | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
the potential that we could see some wetter | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
and at times pretty windy weather, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
but it does look as though further east things might stay pretty quiet. | 0:03:09 | 0:03:14
The best of the drier weather is likely to be in the eastern areas. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
The south-east could see a problem with frost and fog, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
classic January mornings. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
There is still a great deal of uncertainty as to the | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
longer-term outlook, and I'll firm up on this tomorrow. Take care. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28 |
