Hello there. It was a sparkling Sunday for many of us - | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
a hard frost, yes, but some beautiful blue sky | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
and sunshine, for most, anyway. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
Temperatures in the sheltered glens of Scotland | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
got down to lows of -10 degrees. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
We saw some beautiful Weather Watchers' photographs sent in, | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
like this, showing the frosty scenes with the lovely blue sky | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
throughout the day. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
However, there are signs that the cold air is going to slowly | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
be squeezed out by something a little less cold | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
moving in from the Atlantic over the next couple of days. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
Monday will give a North-South divide for many, though, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
in terms of sparkling sunshine through Scotland, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
northern England and Northern Ireland. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
An easterly flow will drag in more cloud across England and Wales, | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
producing a little bit of nuisance drizzle as well, | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
making it feel cold and drab for much of the afternoon. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
Top temperatures on Monday 2 to 6 degrees, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
down on where we should be, really, for this time of year. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:52
Now as we move out of Monday, the winds will start to fall light, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
the drizzle ease away, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
but there could be a problem with some fog forming, | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
some of it dense in places, and if that happens | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
it could be pretty slow to clear away first thing | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
on Tuesday morning. Not quite as cold a start on Tuesday | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
but I'm sure with the fog around it's not going to feel | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
particularly great out there first thing in the morning. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
Hopefully the fog will slowly lift away | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
and Tuesday is the sign of this slight change developing. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
A weather front pushing in from the Atlantic. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
Ahead of it, we see the wind swing round to a southerly direction, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
so that's going to introduce something a little less cold, | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
which means that this will be rain rather than snow. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
But at the same time, we've still got the south-easterly flow | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
dragging in more cloud along those east coasts of Scotland | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
and eastern England. 3 to 5 degrees at the very best. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
Milder a little bit south and west, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
but indications of that wetter weather set to push through. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
Now, that will arrive overnight Tuesday | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
and move into Wednesday, and for a time, some of it, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
along the west-facing coast, will be quite heavy as well. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
This weather front is going to make what we call erratic progress | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
as it pushes further east. It's going to be a real messy picture | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
as we go through the day, | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
the rain lingering on Wednesday | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
across much of the eastern half of the UK. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
Behind it, slowly we'll see an improving picture. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
Brighter skies, sunshine into Northern Ireland and western fringes | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
by the end of the afternoon, and here, double digits quite likely. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
But as we move out of Wednesday into Thursday, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
we see this little brief ridge of high pressure developing, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
the isobars opening up and the winds falling light yet again. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
At this time of year, again, | 0:02:25 | 0:02:26
that could produce some problems with some fog, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
particularly with the moisture still lying around | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
as that frontal system clears away. So, a foggy start to Thursday. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
There could be some rain lingering in he north-east. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
The fog will lift. Hopefully we'll see some sunny spells coming through | 0:02:36 | 0:02:40
with highs of around 5 to 7 degrees. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Now, as we move out of Thursday into Friday, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
we can see another weather front | 0:02:46 | 0:02:47
starting to push in from the Atlantic | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
and this could potentially herald a change | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
to the longer-term picture. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
Because we started off pretty cold but quite settled, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
but as we look further ahead, it looks as though the jet stream | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
is likely to intensify and sit across the UK, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
and that's going to drive these areas of low pressure | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
in from the Atlantic. So all that basically means is, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
things could turn a little more unsettled | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
as we move towards the end of the week and into next week. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
So generally quite unsettled, with rain at times. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
There will be some drier interludes. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:19
With the rain, we could see gales as well. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
Temperatures improving a little, but don't expect too much. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
Average for this time of year. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
More details coming up throughout the week. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29 |
