Hello. Monday was the day of the great British weather divide.

0:00:020:00:04

Northern areas saw crisp, wintry sunshine after a frosty start.

0:00:040:00:08

Southern areas, it was grey and cold.

0:00:080:00:10

Shows up nicely on the satellite imagery here.

0:00:100:00:12

You can see the cloud expanding

0:00:120:00:14

northwards throughout the day. Clear skies remain,

0:00:140:00:16

Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.

0:00:160:00:18

But at the same point one time during the afternoon,

0:00:180:00:20

Musselburgh and Bristol both showing two degrees

0:00:200:00:23

but as our weather watchers show you,

0:00:230:00:25

completely different views outdoors.

0:00:250:00:27

And with the sunshine, that two degrees felt a lot better

0:00:270:00:30

in Musselburgh than it did in Bristol.

0:00:300:00:33

As we go through into Tuesday,

0:00:330:00:34

the high pressure that was with us

0:00:340:00:36

on Monday continues to push further east.

0:00:360:00:38

At that allows the winds to go more southerly.

0:00:380:00:40

That has taken the cloud further north.

0:00:400:00:42

So a greyer day for northern England, Scotland,

0:00:420:00:44

Northern Ireland. Misty over the hills.

0:00:440:00:46

The odd spot of light train or drizzle.

0:00:460:00:48

But the clouds low based and low topped in that

0:00:480:00:51

when it hits the hills, say the Scottish mountains,

0:00:510:00:54

the Cumbrian fells and the Welsh mountains,

0:00:540:00:56

it will break up. So, Gwyneth, Anglesey, Cumbria

0:00:560:00:58

and the north and west Highlands of Scotland,

0:00:580:01:00

you'll probably see sunshine all day long again.

0:01:000:01:02

Could it 10 or 11 degrees. A cool day for many.

0:01:020:01:05

Turning milder in the south-west.

0:01:050:01:06

Devon and Cornwall, South Wales,

0:01:060:01:08

by the end of the afternoon

0:01:080:01:09

rain arrives, pushing through N Ireland in the evening.

0:01:090:01:12

Through Tuesday night, into Wednesday morning,

0:01:120:01:14

rain pushes northwards and eastwards

0:01:140:01:15

fairly erratically.

0:01:150:01:17

As skies clear to the south and west of the country,

0:01:170:01:19

into Wednesday morning,

0:01:190:01:21

we'll see fog patches form

0:01:210:01:22

and some icy conditions as well

0:01:220:01:24

following rain earlier in the night.

0:01:240:01:26

So for Wednesday,

0:01:260:01:27

that weather front brings rain

0:01:270:01:29

across eastern areas to start with.

0:01:290:01:30

As there's not many isobars on the back edge of it,

0:01:300:01:33

that indicates there's not much wind,

0:01:330:01:35

not enough to push that off.

0:01:350:01:36

So some eastern areas could stay

0:01:360:01:37

cloudy and damp all day long,

0:01:370:01:39

particularly through eastern England

0:01:390:01:41

and also in Shetland, quite a windy day.

0:01:410:01:43

But elsewhere, some fog will linger,

0:01:430:01:45

but many will have a much brighter day

0:01:450:01:47

on Wednesday compared with Tuesday.

0:01:470:01:48

After in places a frosty start,

0:01:480:01:50

actually quite pleasant when the sun is overhead,

0:01:500:01:52

although temperatures in some of the Scottish mountains

0:01:520:01:55

will stay close to freezing.

0:01:550:01:56

Wednesday night, an area of low pressure with showers

0:01:560:01:58

gets close to the south-west, also the Channel Islands.

0:01:580:02:01

Pushes into France, high-pressure with us,

0:02:010:02:03

not many isobars once again

0:02:030:02:05

and that lasts for the rest of the week.

0:02:050:02:07

Light winds, clear skies at times overnight,

0:02:070:02:10

frost and fog could be an issue by the morning.

0:02:100:02:12

On Thursday, mainly across central and western areas,

0:02:120:02:15

still could be a lot of cloud in the east.

0:02:150:02:17

Many will brighten up, sunny spells,

0:02:170:02:19

a bit cool though,

0:02:190:02:20

temperatures in single figures.

0:02:200:02:22

With few isobars into Friday,

0:02:220:02:25

it's that same repeated process.

0:02:250:02:27

Like Thursday, some will see

0:02:270:02:28

mist and fog to begin with.

0:02:280:02:30

Some of that fog may take a while to shift,

0:02:300:02:32

if it does at all. There will be sunny spells,

0:02:320:02:34

particularly in the west where the breeze picks up later.

0:02:340:02:37

Any fog here should clear

0:02:370:02:38

and that breeze picks up

0:02:380:02:39

ahead of this weather front.

0:02:390:02:41

This is the big question as we go into the weekend

0:02:410:02:43

and beyond - how quickly this one pushes its way in.

0:02:430:02:46

At the moment it looks like the south-west, Wales

0:02:460:02:48

and into western Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:02:480:02:50

are likely to see the rain on Saturday.

0:02:500:02:52

But that could all be further west

0:02:520:02:54

it could all be a bit further east,

0:02:540:02:56

and that's our big problem in the outlook

0:02:560:02:58

as we go through into next week.

0:02:580:03:00

This Scandinavian high pressure, how quickly that relinquishes its grip

0:03:000:03:04

and how quickly this area of low pressure pushes in.

0:03:040:03:06

Most computer models show this does happen, but it's

0:03:060:03:09

the rate at which this happens which is the big uncertainty.

0:03:090:03:12

So we know it looks like most places will see

0:03:120:03:15

a wet and windy spell before Atlantic winds return,

0:03:150:03:17

whether they're westerly on north-westerly,

0:03:170:03:20

pushing us back into sunshine and showers.

0:03:200:03:22

But how quickly that happens and how quickly things turn milder

0:03:220:03:25

is something we'll of course keep you updated on.
