Hello. Weather is what the atmosphere throws at us | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
minute by minute, day by day. Climate is the average | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
of that over a long period of time. Interestingly, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
both were making news headlines on Thursday. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
Climate first. Several major weather organisations said that... | 0:00:12 | 0:00:16
Now, El Nino is a natural warming influence on the world's | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
weather but it wasn't there in 2017, so even without it, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
the year comfortably took its place in the top-three | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
hottest years on record around the world | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
and that's why climate was making news. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
But of course, weather was making news as well on Thursday. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
That stormy start to the day, more snow showers around too | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
but then look at this - this is something else that would | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
get us talking into next week, a change to milder weather | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
and for a time next week, I think, much milder weather for some of us, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
with temperatures actually rising above average. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
The reason for that change coming up. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
But right now, we're very much still in that cold air | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
coming on this brisk north north-westerly flow | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
across the UK. More snow showers, in fact, more significant | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
snow piling up into the hills of Northern Ireland and Scotland, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
but further accumulations to lower levels in places, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
into the Pennines, too, at times during Friday. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
A few wintry showers dotted about through other parts | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
of Wales and western England and, of course, it feels cold, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
particularly in the wind and especially across the | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
northern half of the UK. But even where you stay largely fine across | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
some southern and eastern spots, it's still a chilly wind. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
Those wintry showers continue on Friday night. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
Then we look to the south and we see an area of wet weather affecting | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
Wales and southern England that could have a bit of sleet | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
or wet snow associated with it clearing away on Saturday | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
and actually, Saturday afternoon is much quieter. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Far fewer wintry showers affecting northern parts, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
more of us dry, sunny, but still cold. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Icy start to the day and again possibly on Sunday. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
But then this comes in on Sunday, the first onslaught, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:50
if you like, of the attack of milder air. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
It comes with wet weather spreading north-east into cold air. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
So, some sleet and snow on the leading edge, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
which could be quite heavy in places, so absolutely keep checking | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
the forecast if you've got travel plans on Sunday. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
That pushes away, the milder air starts to take over | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
the UK. Another weather system, some uncertainly about the position, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
looks like it will run through parts of England and Wales | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
as we go on through Monday. North of that it should stay fine, | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
notice temperatures continue to creep up at average, at least, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
for the time of year. And milder still by Tuesday, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
with a lot of fine weather around on Tuesday, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
maybe just a weather system glancing the north-west parts | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
of Northern Ireland and Scotland, more of us in double figures. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
And so again, that's the bigger change next week, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
to something much milder and above average for some of us | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
for the time of year. And it's all down to a change | 0:02:37 | 0:02:40
in the position of the jet stream. Right now, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
much of the UK is on the cold side of the jet stream on this | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
north-westerly flow. But gradually going into next week, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
the jet stream has a different plan. Ushering that milder air | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
from the south-west, it begins to pull its way northwards, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
leaving much of the UK on the warmer, the milder side | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
of the jet stream. And that's the most significant change | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
in our weather next week. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:02
It will still be unsettled but that change in the position | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
of the jet stream actually pushes most of the weather systems | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
towards north-western parts, parts of Northern Ireland | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
and Scotland in particular, predominantly in the form of rain. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
Relatively dry towards the south-east of the UK after | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
Monday's rain and actually climatologically that's | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
closer to what we might expect for the UK | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
at this time of year. So maybe for a time next week, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
weather and climate converge. Now the change to the milder | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
weather will have us talking, not sure it will make | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
too many news headlines, though. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
