Hello. I'm going to give you a fair amount of detail how we see | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
the rest of the month panning out across the British Isles | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
and then we'll just take a quick look on some of the themes | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
we think are going to develop in the first part of February. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
The coming week - bit of a mishmash, not unusual for January. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
A milder start, but as we close out the week, I think | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
things briefly will turn cooler. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
Maybe not as cold as we've had it, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
but certainly cooler than the start of the week. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
The reason why it's going to be so mild to start off | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
is that we've got this run of south-westerlies. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Quite a bit of breeze, notice the number of isobars, notice that we | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
also have two fronts lurking with intent across the British Isles. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
The early one there, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
the more easterly feature, bringing a wet start across eastern parts | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
and then we're going to drag this weaker feature down | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
and across England and Wales later in the day. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
Behind that, there's a pretty decent chance | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
of seeing some decent spells of sunshine | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
and I think they'll be at their best | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
perhaps across Angus and Aberdeenshire. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Out towards the north and west, plenty of showers, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
similar sort of mixture across Northern Ireland. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Here, across England, having had some sunny spells, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
they may well fade away | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
as that more westerly feature just | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
drags its way down across northern parts of England, | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
through Wales, and some showers, if not longer spells of rain there. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
But as we move on into Wednesday, quite an interesting day here | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
because not only have we got a very vigorous area of low pressure | 0:01:15 | 0:01:18
close to the northern half of Scotland - | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
70mph gusts perhaps in there for a time - | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
but this weather feature here, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
a band of cloud and rain | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
and some pretty strong winds, will work its way slowly | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
but surely down across all parts, there is no escape from that. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
The last of the mild air in association with that, | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
following on behind despite the presence of the sunshine, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
it's a mixture of sunny spells and showers. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
Notice as we go from Wednesday into Thursday, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
we still have quite tightly packed isobars so the wind again a feature. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
Much of it, though, across the British Isles | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
still coming from the south-west. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
That's really quite important. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
That's going to keep a relatively mild feel to proceedings. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
But the temperatures will have slipped back by a degree or two | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
at the very least | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
and then just notice across this north-western quarter, | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
no longer the south-westerlies, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
the wind wanting to get round towards a north-westerly. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
At this time of year, that's a really quite cool direction | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
exacerbated by the fact those isobars are quite tightly | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
packed again. So there will be an edge to the breeze, shall we say? | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
If not a full-on wind, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
nay a gale here across this north-eastern quarter of Scotland. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
Look at the temperature profile - | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
5 to 9, where on Tuesday, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
we were talking about sort of 10 to 13 or 14 degrees perhaps. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
That short, sharp shock is just that | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
because as we start the weekend, | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
the isobars are lying somewhere out to the west and the south-west, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
but again it brings the possibility of frontal systems, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
increasing the cloud. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:39
Bits and pieces of rain moving in across Western Scotland, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
the north-west of England, maybe the top end of Wales | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
and back into Northern Ireland too. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Saturday definitely drier down towards the south-eastern | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
quarter, but at least that whole frontal system has imported | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
milder airs for the greater part of the British Isles. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
Into the following week, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
it could well be that we see a high pressure moving in under this | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
great big eddy in the jet stream | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
and that could really settle things down across the southern | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
half of the British Isles, but less so as it runs | 0:03:09 | 0:03:13
out of influence across the very far north of Scotland. | 0:03:13 | 0:03:15
So the driest of the weather in the south. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
There will be a risk of some fog and frost. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
Wet and windy in the north, we suspect, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
but I think it could well be that it will be a little bit milder there. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
Lots going on. Take care. Bye-bye. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
