Hello, there. We've had some very mild air across the British Isles

0:00:020:00:05

over the last couple of days -

0:00:050:00:06

in fact, you might go so far as to say

0:00:060:00:08

the weekend felt quite springlike in places,

0:00:080:00:11

particularly where you got to see

0:00:110:00:13

some Sunday sunshine.

0:00:130:00:14

That lifted temperatures

0:00:140:00:16

across parts of central and eastern England

0:00:160:00:18

very close to 15 degrees -

0:00:180:00:20

but that trend is not going to continue

0:00:200:00:22

into the week ahead.

0:00:220:00:24

The mild air that has been wafting up

0:00:240:00:26

across the country

0:00:260:00:27

is going to be replaced

0:00:270:00:28

by cold air from the north-west,

0:00:280:00:30

behind this cold front

0:00:300:00:32

sinking southwards and eastwards

0:00:320:00:34

as we start the new working week,

0:00:340:00:36

ahead of the frontal system, still mild

0:00:360:00:38

and pretty windy, as well,

0:00:380:00:40

so, a mild start

0:00:400:00:41

across the south of the country,

0:00:410:00:43

but then we see this band of heavy rain

0:00:430:00:45

sinking southwards and eastwards,

0:00:450:00:47

and behind that, we peel back the cloud -

0:00:470:00:49

yes, we brighten the skies,

0:00:490:00:51

but we drop the temperatures, as well.

0:00:510:00:53

Just 5 degrees in Aberdeen

0:00:530:00:55

through Monday afternoon,

0:00:550:00:56

and some showers

0:00:560:00:57

starting to pack into the north-west -

0:00:570:00:59

some heavy, thundery

0:00:590:01:00

and starting to turn wintry,

0:01:000:01:02

because that's the big theme through the week ahead.

0:01:020:01:04

It'll turn colder,

0:01:040:01:05

cold enough for wintry showers -

0:01:050:01:07

it'll often be windy, with gales at times.

0:01:070:01:10

Now, having said that,

0:01:100:01:12

the winds will be fairly light

0:01:120:01:13

as we move into the first part of Tuesday.

0:01:130:01:15

An area of high pressure just trying to exert

0:01:150:01:17

an influence on our weather.

0:01:170:01:18

Where you're closest to the high,

0:01:180:01:20

particularly for central and eastern areas of England,

0:01:200:01:23

there could be a touch of frost

0:01:230:01:24

on Tuesday morning.

0:01:240:01:25

Here, some good spells of sunshine -

0:01:250:01:27

but then a pincer movement of weather systems,

0:01:270:01:29

one into the south-west, one into the north-west,

0:01:290:01:31

bringing rain, and the winds

0:01:310:01:33

will start to strengthen, as well -

0:01:330:01:35

and here comes another cold front,

0:01:350:01:37

another band of rain,

0:01:370:01:39

and behind it a renewed push

0:01:390:01:41

of cold air from the north-west.

0:01:410:01:43

Now, on Wednesday,

0:01:430:01:44

yes, we'll see some spells of sunshine developing,

0:01:440:01:47

but we'll also see quite a few showers -

0:01:470:01:49

particularly over high ground in the north,

0:01:490:01:52

but, perhaps, to low levels across Scotland,

0:01:520:01:54

the showers will turn wintry,

0:01:540:01:56

because temperatures

0:01:560:01:57

will be only around 4 to 9 degrees,

0:01:570:01:59

and it could feel colder than that

0:01:590:02:01

given the strength of the wind.

0:02:010:02:02

Still windy on Thursday, gales in exposed spots,

0:02:020:02:05

particularly up to the north-east.

0:02:050:02:06

There should be fewer showers by this stage,

0:02:060:02:08

more in the way of dry weather - again, 5 to 8 degrees.

0:02:080:02:12

So, some cold air in place

0:02:120:02:14

as we head towards the end of the week.

0:02:140:02:17

We're likely to see quite a widespread frost

0:02:170:02:19

on Friday morning, and then, into that cold air,

0:02:190:02:22

we're going to bring a frontal system from the west,

0:02:220:02:25

bringing outbreaks of rain, yes,

0:02:250:02:26

but on its leading edge,

0:02:260:02:27

Northern Ireland, northern England, Scotland

0:02:270:02:30

could see some snow for a time.

0:02:300:02:31

Generally, though,

0:02:310:02:32

it looks like we'll end the week

0:02:320:02:34

with some slightly milder air

0:02:340:02:35

returning from the south-west.

0:02:350:02:37

Now, into next weekend,

0:02:370:02:38

we're likely to see further bands of rain

0:02:380:02:41

pushing across the country

0:02:410:02:42

accompanied, once again,

0:02:420:02:43

temporarily, by some slightly milder air -

0:02:430:02:45

but the tendency will always be

0:02:450:02:47

to get us back

0:02:470:02:48

into these north or north-westerly winds.

0:02:480:02:51

So, yes, while there might be

0:02:510:02:53

mild periods of weather,

0:02:530:02:55

there will also be

0:02:550:02:56

some pretty cold weather around, as well.

0:02:560:02:59

So, we can sum it up like this

0:02:590:03:00

for the weekend and beyond -

0:03:000:03:02

there will be spells of rain

0:03:020:03:03

interspersed by brighter periods

0:03:030:03:04

and some sunshine. Cold enough,

0:03:040:03:06

where we have those brighter periods,

0:03:060:03:08

to give some wintry showers

0:03:080:03:09

as those temperatures continue

0:03:090:03:11

to wobble upwards and downwards.

0:03:110:03:12

Now, there is just a chance,

0:03:120:03:14

as we look even further ahead,

0:03:140:03:15

that we might see high pressure

0:03:150:03:17

building down from Scandinavia,

0:03:170:03:18

blocking the weather patterns,

0:03:180:03:20

stopping the Atlantic weather system,

0:03:200:03:21

so, turning things less unsettled,

0:03:210:03:24

but bringing us an easterly wind -

0:03:240:03:26

and at this time of year,

0:03:260:03:27

that will still feel like winter.
