Hello. Sunday was only a few days ago but in the world of weather,

0:00:020:00:04

it's a long time ago because on Sunday,

0:00:040:00:06

some of us had 15 Celsius.

0:00:060:00:08

Those same parts closer to five Celsius

0:00:080:00:10

over the next few days. Now, already this week,

0:00:100:00:12

temperatures have taken a dip

0:00:120:00:14

but over the next 24 hours, they go down even further.

0:00:140:00:17

Proper cold air coming in on a strengthening wind

0:00:170:00:20

and more wintry showers towards Scotland

0:00:200:00:22

and Northern Ireland, with an icy start

0:00:220:00:24

for some of us here Wednesday morning

0:00:240:00:25

and those showers coming infrequently towards

0:00:250:00:27

western Scotland, Northern Ireland during the day

0:00:270:00:30

and some developing into north-west England and the Pennines.

0:00:300:00:32

Wintry showers, that means rain, sleet,

0:00:320:00:35

snow mainly on hills but not exclusively so.

0:00:350:00:37

Hail, maybe some rumbles of thunder too.

0:00:370:00:40

Southern parts of England and Wales start the day

0:00:400:00:42

with outbreaks of rain. They clear to sunshine

0:00:420:00:44

and a few showers and those are your temperatures

0:00:440:00:47

by the end of the afternoon, 3-7 Celsius,

0:00:470:00:49

feeling colder in the wind.

0:00:490:00:51

That wind stays with us on Wednesday night,

0:00:510:00:53

in fact for north-east Scotland and the Northern Isles,

0:00:530:00:55

close to low pressure, a spell of severe gales.

0:00:550:00:58

And going into Thursday, there is more of a northerly component

0:00:580:01:01

to the weather so it feels every bit as chilly on Thursday.

0:01:010:01:04

Still those wintry showers, Scotland and Northern Ireland,

0:01:040:01:06

fewer showers elsewhere

0:01:060:01:08

and even some of these showers tend to fade.

0:01:080:01:10

So, more in the way of dry, sunnier weather into the afternoon.

0:01:100:01:13

Then a widespread frost on Friday morning

0:01:130:01:15

as briefly high pressure builds in.

0:01:150:01:17

So a lot of fine, dry weather on Friday,

0:01:170:01:19

North Sea coastal showers

0:01:190:01:20

and then increasing cloud and outbreaks of rain

0:01:200:01:22

edging in towards parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland

0:01:220:01:25

by the end of Friday as this weather system comes in from the Atlantic.

0:01:250:01:29

Timed for the start of the weekend, running into cold air

0:01:290:01:32

which means some of us won't just get rain out of this

0:01:320:01:35

but a chance for sleet and snow on its leading edge,

0:01:350:01:37

particularly into parts of northern England and Scotland

0:01:370:01:40

and perhaps not just on hills, so we'll keep an eye on that.

0:01:400:01:43

And the wet weather never properly clearing away

0:01:430:01:45

from parts of eastern England. And going into Sunday,

0:01:450:01:48

close to this area of low pressure that forms along the weather front,

0:01:480:01:51

central and eastern parts of England,

0:01:510:01:53

cloudy, cold, damp and maybe not just with rain

0:01:530:01:56

but a chance for a bit of sleet and snow for a time here as well.

0:01:560:02:00

So we'll keep an eye on that.

0:02:000:02:01

North and west of the UK,

0:02:010:02:02

pressure building so fairer skies here

0:02:020:02:05

and some sunshine, a drier picture for Sunday.

0:02:050:02:08

Now, as we start next week, it is high pressure,

0:02:080:02:10

frosty start to the week but then we get another weather system

0:02:100:02:13

poised to come in from the Atlantic, followed by high pressure again,

0:02:130:02:16

followed by another weather system.

0:02:160:02:17

So it is looking changeable into the start of next week.

0:02:170:02:20

But further ahead, end of next week

0:02:200:02:22

and the following week,

0:02:220:02:23

if you were watching the last Weather For The Week Ahead,

0:02:230:02:26

we said there's a chance high pressure will build in

0:02:260:02:28

from Scandinavia with a very cold

0:02:280:02:30

easterly wind coming with it.

0:02:300:02:32

This is now looking less likely,

0:02:320:02:34

not out of the question, less likely.

0:02:340:02:36

More likely, looking further ahead,

0:02:360:02:38

it's the Azores high pressure that'll be influential,

0:02:380:02:41

that means coming in from the south-west of the UK

0:02:410:02:43

with a chilly north-westerly flow.

0:02:430:02:45

But with this scenario,

0:02:450:02:47

the high pressure we think will occasionally drift south again,

0:02:470:02:51

allowing low pressure to come across it from the Atlantic

0:02:510:02:55

and into the UK, turning things perhaps a little less cold

0:02:550:02:57

but with a spell of wind and rain.

0:02:570:02:59

So, actually, the more likely picture for the end of next week

0:02:590:03:02

and beyond is the continuation of the current set-up.

0:03:020:03:05

High pressure, low pressure, high pressure, low pressure.

0:03:050:03:08

With high pressure, it is colder,

0:03:080:03:10

it's drier, though there could well be some wintry showers.

0:03:100:03:12

With low pressure coming in, it's a little less cold

0:03:120:03:15

with spells of wind and rain

0:03:150:03:16

but perhaps some snow, particularly to northern hills.

0:03:160:03:19

So, still looking further ahead, some variety in our weather

0:03:190:03:23

but not the extreme variety and temperatures

0:03:230:03:25

we've had in the past week.

0:03:250:03:27

That's the latest weather for the week ahead.
