And so we say goodbye to January.

0:00:020:00:03

The days are getting longer, the sun is getting stronger,

0:00:030:00:06

but make no mistake, winter is far from over.

0:00:060:00:09

Much colder air moved back

0:00:090:00:10

across the UK during Wednesday.

0:00:100:00:12

For some of us the return of snow showers.

0:00:120:00:14

Some heavy ones around, too.

0:00:140:00:15

But with cold air you also get

0:00:150:00:17

sparkling sunshine occasionally too.

0:00:170:00:19

That was the case on Wednesday

0:00:190:00:21

and will also be the case over the next few days.

0:00:210:00:23

But the cold air is here

0:00:230:00:25

and it's here for the foreseeable.

0:00:250:00:27

Occasionally we might get attempts

0:00:270:00:29

at milder air coming in from the Atlantic.

0:00:290:00:31

One at the weekend does not succeed,

0:00:310:00:32

and a bigger area of mild air into the start

0:00:320:00:35

of next week tries to come in, but look how the life

0:00:350:00:37

is squeezed out of this too as the cold air wins.

0:00:370:00:40

This milder air represents weather systems from the Atlantic

0:00:400:00:43

coming in, and because the cold air wins,

0:00:430:00:45

the moisture from these weather systems may fall

0:00:450:00:48

increasingly as snow, as we'll see.

0:00:480:00:50

Let's get to the day today

0:00:500:00:52

and over the next few days, starting with

0:00:520:00:54

Thursday's weather, and it's quite a strong

0:00:540:00:56

north-westerly flow across the UK.

0:00:560:00:58

So clearly that's a cold direction. An icy start.

0:00:580:01:01

Further wintry showers in places,

0:01:010:01:02

rain, sleet, snow, hail.

0:01:020:01:04

Snow tending to be just at the higher ground, northern Scotland,

0:01:040:01:06

Northern Ireland, Wales, the West Midlands into south-west England.

0:01:060:01:09

Many other places will be dry

0:01:090:01:11

with some of that sparkling sunshine

0:01:110:01:12

and temperatures at around 4-7 Celsius.

0:01:120:01:15

A frost on Friday morning, fewer showers.

0:01:150:01:18

There'll be a few where the wind is strongest

0:01:180:01:20

towards the North Sea coast, mainly of rain.

0:01:200:01:22

A lighter wind elsewhere,

0:01:220:01:23

some of that sunshine.

0:01:230:01:25

In fact, a fine winter's day on Friday.

0:01:250:01:27

But then remember that area of mild air trying

0:01:270:01:29

to come in from the Atlantic with the weather system for the weekend?

0:01:290:01:32

Well, here is the moisture from that, but remember,

0:01:320:01:34

the cold air won, so as we see outbreaks of rain

0:01:340:01:37

pushing east on Saturday into the cold air,

0:01:370:01:39

a chance for sleet and snow in the hills of Scotland

0:01:390:01:41

and northern England.

0:01:410:01:42

Perhaps to lower levels in places.

0:01:420:01:44

And then, as the moisture hangs around, across

0:01:440:01:47

central and eastern parts on Saturday night and into Sunday,

0:01:470:01:49

a chance of sleet and snow perhaps even to southern areas

0:01:490:01:52

for a time out of this before it fizzles out during Sunday.

0:01:520:01:55

To the west, after some heavy and wintry showers on Saturday,

0:01:550:01:58

with a strong wind, increasingly dry

0:01:580:02:00

and sunny weather on Sunday.

0:02:000:02:02

Things quieten down a bit,

0:02:020:02:03

but, of course, it is still cold

0:02:030:02:05

because the cold air wins.

0:02:050:02:07

Now, high pressure has built in

0:02:070:02:09

for start of next week, for Monday,

0:02:090:02:11

but then we see another one of those Atlantic weather systems.

0:02:110:02:14

An attempt at milder air coming in that won't succeed,

0:02:140:02:16

but the moisture from that feeding in late Monday,

0:02:160:02:19

into Tuesday, and as it pushes its way southwards

0:02:190:02:22

it could well produce some sleet and snow in places

0:02:220:02:24

so that's certainly something to watch.

0:02:240:02:26

And that is the weather pattern for next week,

0:02:260:02:28

maybe beyond into the following week too.

0:02:280:02:30

High pressure from the Azores,

0:02:300:02:32

south-west of us, building towards UK.

0:02:320:02:34

At times the flow of air around that

0:02:340:02:36

means a chilly north-westerly wind

0:02:360:02:38

with sunshine and a few wintry showers.

0:02:380:02:40

Occasionally the high pressure will be pushed away south-westwards

0:02:400:02:44

once again as we see low pressure from the Atlantic moving in.

0:02:440:02:47

Remember, the mild air with these does not win.

0:02:470:02:49

The cold air holds on in the UK

0:02:490:02:51

so the moisture from these could produce sleet

0:02:510:02:53

and snow in places, and then as they pull away,

0:02:530:02:56

the high pressure builds back in again,

0:02:560:02:58

things settle briefly and we're back into

0:02:580:03:00

that chilly north-westerly flow

0:03:000:03:01

with sunshine and wintry showers.

0:03:010:03:03

So let's break that down.

0:03:030:03:05

What can we expect next week, into the following weekend,

0:03:050:03:07

even into the following week possibly?

0:03:070:03:10

Cold air holding on.

0:03:100:03:11

When high-pressure is close by,

0:03:110:03:13

this is where you get the drier, sunnier weather,

0:03:130:03:15

the sparkling sunshine,

0:03:150:03:16

but a chance of wintry showers.

0:03:160:03:18

When low pressure comes in

0:03:180:03:19

it will be wetter briefly

0:03:190:03:21

and a chance of sleet and snow just about anywhere.

0:03:210:03:24

So we may be changing the month

0:03:240:03:26

for the final month of winter,

0:03:260:03:27

but there's a lot of life left in winter yet.
