Hello, there. We may have started February, a new month, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
on Thursday, but the Arctic air returned with a vengeance. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
It was bitterly cold in the wind, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
we had weather watcher pictures | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
such as this from near Fort William, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
a ski resort, sent in. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
Yes, we've had more snowfall, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
and with that Arctic air flow | 0:00:16 | 0:00:17
staying with us | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
through Friday and into the weekend - | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
the likelihood is, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
we'll see more snowfall. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
Probably not as much on Friday, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:23
because the winds are easing out, | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
we've got a little ridge of high pressure building in, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
but the risk of ice is still with us first thing - | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
at least in eastern areas, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
where there could be a wintry mix to the showers, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:32
as there could for the north of Scotland, | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
but, by and large, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
the winds will be lighter than Thursday. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
There'll be fewer showers, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
more sunshine - | 0:00:37 | 0:00:38
one or two for the west, as you can see - | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
but, by and large, lovely, crisp sunshine. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
It's not going to feel warm, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
but it won't feel as bitter | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
as it did on Thursday - | 0:00:45 | 0:00:46
and, already, by the end of the day, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
we've got the next weather system coming in. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
That's this, well, slightly milder air, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
which will get squeezed out | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
as it comes into the cold air, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
the blocking cold air, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
that's sitting across the eastern side of Europe, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
and that, again, happens | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
later Monday into Tuesday, | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
so we're going to see a succession | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
of weather systems | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
coming in off the Atlantic, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:04
starting with a lot of moisture - | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
but that moisture gets squeezed out | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
by this cold air, | 0:01:08 | 0:01:09
which is just sitting in its way of progress, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
and, really, that sums up most of the week ahead. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
So, the first one comes in Saturday, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
into that cold air. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
Yes, there will be some wintriness around, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:18
but it tends to start to peter out, | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
so it just looks cold and damp | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
for many of us. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
A little bit of wintriness, | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
and still the north-easterly | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
starting to pick up | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
across the eastern side of England, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
where, actually, we could have some sunshine. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
So, that weather front is still with us | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
as we go through Saturday night into Sunday, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
but it's coming into our high pressure, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
our cold air, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:37
so it's tending to peter out. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:38
So, Sunday just looks cloudy to start, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
with still a smattering of rain or sleet around, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
but some good sunshine coming out | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
in Northern Ireland, Western Scotland, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
but the easterly feed, or the north-easterly feed, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
starts to pick up, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:48
and we could actually see some snow | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
as we go through Sunday night and into Monday | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
across the south-eastern quadrant of the country, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
so, that could cause some issues, of course, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
depending on how far west it pushes, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
and, by that stage, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
we've already got the next weather system | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
coming in off the Atlantic | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
into Northern Ireland and Western Scotland, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
so, posing a risk of some snow later on, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
and certainly so through Monday night | 0:02:08 | 0:02:10
and into Tuesday - | 0:02:10 | 0:02:11
and the question mark is how quickly | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
and how far eastwards that'll come. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
At the moment, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:16
it looks set to fizzle out again, | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
if you like, across central parts of the UK, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
so, again, there's a real risk | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
that we could see some snowfall | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
around during Tuesday, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
particularly Western areas - | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
but, again, we've got those showers, | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
initially in the south and the east, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
and there'll be quite a brisk wind blowing, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
so we could see scenes like this, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
some disruption, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
because of that snow as we move into Tuesday. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
You can see the trend, here, can't you? | 0:02:36 | 0:02:38
Because, again, later in the week, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
we've got another area | 0:02:40 | 0:02:41
of slightly milder, moister air | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
coming off the Atlantic, | 0:02:43 | 0:02:44
but it comes into that cold, blocking air, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
and, again, as it falls into that cold air, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
there could be some wintry issues, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
and the mild air just tends to disappear, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
it gets squeezed out, | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
so, later in the week, again, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:56
we could see some issues with snow, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
because that cold air | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
is reluctant to move away. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
So, it will be cold, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
we'll have night-time frost, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:04
risk of ice, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
certainly a risk of some snow, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
which could be disruptive - | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
but there's just the hint | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
that towards the weekend, at least, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
it may become a little bit milder - | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
but, again, the jury's out. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
As ever, we'll keep you posted. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
The warnings, there, on the website, as well, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
and we'll have more for you tomorrow evening. Bye-bye. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22 |
