Hello. We are into one of the longest cold spells | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
of the winter so far and it looks like we're going | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
to get another week out of it before it's done. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
May not even be done then. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
And some of us are going to see more snow. | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
Now, we've had a bit of that so far this weekend, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
particularly in higher parts of northern England and Scotland, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
but there's the threat elsewhere as we go through the week ahead. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:22
Now, what's happening for part two of the weekend | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
on Sunday is, as this weather system just fizzles out in situ, | 0:00:24 | 0:00:28
a keen and cold north-easterly wind behind it blows through | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
east and south-east England, with someone wintry showers. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
A lot of these falling as rain or sleet or hail. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
Things may change on Sunday night, as we'll see in a moment. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Elsewhere, variable cloud, some sunny spells | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
on a drier, brighter day compared to what we endured during Saturday. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:48
But it's still cold out there. There is some sunshine. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
We have a light breeze. It may not feel too bad, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:53
but that keen, cold north-easterly wind across East Anglia | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
and the south-east of England will make it feel closer to | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
freezing and then we have these showers turning increasingly | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
to sleet and snow across parts of south-east England | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
through Sunday night and into Monday morning, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
increasing the ice threat as well. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
So we need to watch out for possible disruption there. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:13
Elsewhere, another fine winter's day with variable cloud and sunshine. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
Yes, it's still cold | 0:01:16 | 0:01:17
and still particularly in that wind towards the south-east. | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
But then, as we go through Monday into Tuesday, we are | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
looking to the other end of the UK. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
This weather system, coming in from the Atlantic. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
This pushing into cold air will bring further sleet and snow, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
probably all sleet and snow inland away from coastal areas, | 0:01:33 | 0:01:36
as it edges its way slowly southwards during Tuesday, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
but it will be weakening as it does so, so we're not expecting | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
huge amounts of snow, but it doesn't take much to cause some disruption. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
So keep a close eye on the forecast for Tuesday. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
Tuesday night into Wednesday, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
again, very weakly it pushes its way southwards | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
and we get a few showers following on behind, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
towards the west and north of the UK but also some dry | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
and occasionally sunny weather on Wednesday as well, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:01
with the winds easing once again | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
and those temperatures still very much stuck into single figures | 0:02:02 | 0:02:06
and we look at another weather system towards the north-west. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
So, the story from Wednesday into Thursday is another attack | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
from the Atlantic with cold air, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
with moisture coming in with this weather front. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Now, this may have a little less cold air associated with it. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:20
There's still some sleet and snow, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
particularly for higher ground and perhaps this leading edge. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
I think more of us will see rain rather than snow out of this system | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
as it gradually pushes its way southwards | 0:02:29 | 0:02:30
and weakens once again as we go on through Thursday. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
Now, by the end of next week, we still have the cold air | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
in place but this area of mild air is yet another weather system | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
coming in from the Atlantic | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
and again trying to turn our weather milder, wetter and windier. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:46
As we take a look at that in the big picture, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
yes, it's another area of low pressure with a frontal system | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
coming our way, with strengthening wind and some wet weather. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
The question is, as this arrives in time for next weekend, | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
what are we going to get out of it? | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
Well, it's likely, we think at the moment, as that moves in it | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
will turn a little less cold for a time next weekend, but only briefly. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
But as it comes in, there will be some rain | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
and, whilst many of us see rain, there's still the threat of getting | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
some snow out of it, particularly for higher ground. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
Again, something to watch | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
and it may be windy enough to bring strong winds or even gales. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
And, as that system pulls away, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
it looks likely it will turn cold yet again. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
