Hello, there. The wintry story continues - | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
and not just here in the UK, | 0:00:04 | 0:00:05
also across much of Europe and north-west Africa. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
In fact, these scenes from Tuesday | 0:00:07 | 0:00:08
weren't from the tops of the Pennines, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
but were instead from Morocco, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:11
where we saw extensive | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
and, in places, quite heavy snowfall. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
If I show you the air mass | 0:00:14 | 0:00:15
across Europe and north-west Africa, | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
you can see the extent of cold air at the moment - | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
the blue colour's all the way | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
as far south as the Canaries. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:21
Warmest are the areas | 0:00:21 | 0:00:22
down towards the east of the Mediterranean - | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and the reason we've got this extent of cold air | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
is because, if I show you the jet stream, now, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
we see the jet stream double back on itself, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
feeding in easterly winds | 0:00:30 | 0:00:31
and that cold air to many places. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Push ourselves out towards the west, though, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
there's a strengthening Atlantic jet stream, now, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
and that is edging our way, | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
set to bring changes over the coming days, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
and introducing some Atlantic weather fronts. | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
Now, before that arrives on Wednesday, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
we've got this ridge of high pressure, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
which means we'll start dry, with some ice, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
and also, of course, a widespread frost. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
Plenty of sunshine, too, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
Early showers, wintry in nature, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
towards East Anglia and the south-east | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
clearing away, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
but notice how the cloud increases | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
across Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
We'll see some snow on the Scottish mountains, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
maybe as much as 10cm, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:01
but it will turn back to rain as temperatures rise. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Stornoway 8 degrees by the end of the day. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
Elsewhere, even with the sunshine, another chilly day, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
and a little bit more breeze around than we saw on Tuesday. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
Frost quickly developing towards the south and east | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
under largely clear skies to take us into Wednesday night, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
but this weather front | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
will work its way southwards and eastwards | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
slowly through Wednesday night and into Thursday, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
with colder air trying to push back in once again | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
from the north-west. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:23
Now, the weather front into the start of Thursday | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
will be somewhere across the Borders, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
northern England into north-west Wales, | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
outbreaks of, maybe, rain on this, this time. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Not everywhere - | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
it's going to be fairly scattered across this zone, | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
with some heavier bursts into the west of Wales later on. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
Bright start, but cold start in the south-east, | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
struggling to lift up, here. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:41
Temperatures in Plymouth 10 degrees by the end of the day, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Scotland, Northern Ireland stay largely dry | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
with some hazy sunshine - but a wetter night | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
come Thursday night to Friday, | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
as that weather front reinvigorates | 0:01:50 | 0:01:51
as it passes its way eastwards. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:53
A ridge of high pressure builds, there, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
but not a particularly strong one. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
Now, there could be some ice around, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
frost here and there for Friday, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
the weather front clearing away | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
from the south-east corner. Mainly rain, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
but what follows will be a scattering of showers, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
rain, hail, sleet and snow - | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
although mainly snow, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:06
west of Scotland, Northern Ireland, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:07
as temperatures again drop back | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
to about 4 or 5 degrees - | 0:02:09 | 0:02:10
and the breeze will make it feel colder than that. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
Brief ridge of high pressure to start Friday night, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
take us into Saturday, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
so, frost and ice risk across England and Wales, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
and then the next Atlantic weather fronts | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
start to push away. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:20
These will have a little bit more about them. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
There'll be some heavy bursts of snow | 0:02:22 | 0:02:23
on its forward edge, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
particularly across the mountains of Scotland, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
northern England, North Wales - | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
but it will turn back to rain | 0:02:28 | 0:02:29
as mild air briefly tries to push its way in. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Rain reaching the south-east corner later in the day, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
turning brighter later on | 0:02:33 | 0:02:34
across Scotland and Northern Ireland | 0:02:34 | 0:02:36
but here, then, temperatures drop, | 0:02:36 | 0:02:37
and, whilst we've got the wind coming off the Atlantic, | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
they're coming all the way from Canada | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
by the end of the weekend, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:42
and it's a source of pretty cold air at the moment. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
So, we're going to see wintry showers across the board, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
mainly across northern and western areas, | 0:02:47 | 0:02:49
primarily of snow, giving it further covering in places. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
That's really going to mount up this week | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
across the mountains of Scotland. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
Temperatures in single figures, of course, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
but, with added wind-chill, | 0:02:57 | 0:02:58
it will probably feel close to freezing, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
particularly the further north and west you are - | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
and even as we go into the following week, | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
half term, of course, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
we've still got that vigorous Atlantic jet stream | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
pushing its way in, and where we've got that, | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
it means, to the north, we get low pressure, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
to the south we get high pressure, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:12
and they're both going to have varying goes at us | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
through much of half term week. | 0:03:15 | 0:03:16
The dominant one is more likely to be the low-pressure system, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
so, overall, it will stay cold | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
with winds in the west and north-west. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
There will be some milder spells coming in - | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
with it, some outbreaks of rain preceded by snow, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
and, next week, always that bit windier. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30 |
