Hello. If you've been
watching our forecasts | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
for the last few days or so,
I can tell you straight away | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
the message is unchanged. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Disruptive snowfall is expected | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
in the week ahead | 0:00:11 | 0:00:12
and different parts
of the country | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
will be
getting snow on different days. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
The cold air that's come
all the way from Russia | 0:00:16 | 0:00:19
has pretty much engulfed
the whole of Europe, the UK, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
Ireland and is even now
pushing out into the Atlantic, | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
that doesn't happen
very often. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
In the short term,
the weather's not too bad. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
There will be some flurries of
snow during the course of the night | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
and into Monday morning | 0:00:31 | 0:00:32
across eastern areas of the UK. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
So, yes, some of us early on
Monday morning | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
will be waking up to | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
a fresh covering of snow. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
Nothing too thick we don't
think at this stage and, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
in fact, for most of us, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
Monday is actually
not looking bad at all. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
There'll be some sunshine around | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
and occasional
passing snow flurries. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
Most of the snow flurries | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
will be across eastern areas, | 0:00:51 | 0:00:52
but they will become
a little bit more frequent | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
during the course of the afternoon | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
and they will push inland
to some western areas as well. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
So, anywhere on Monday could
have at least a few flakes | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
of snow, if not a light covering. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
Most of the day the temperatures
will be below freezing, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
they may peak at | 0:01:06 | 0:01:07
a couple of degrees or so, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
but it will feel like it's minus
five degrees | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
because the winds
will be strongest | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
out of the east across
the southern half of the UK. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
And then Monday evening,
the snow showers | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
really gather pace | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
across the North Sea and
we're watching this area here. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
This has actually prompted | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
the Met Office to already issue | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
an amber warning for
heavy, disruptive snow | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
across some eastern
and central areas of the UK. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
This is what it looks | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
like early on Tuesday morning. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
So, disruptive snowfall falling | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
across parts of Lincolnshire, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
into the Midlands, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
possibly as far west as Birmingham. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:39
There'll be some heavy snow showers
in other areas as well. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
And through the course of the day, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
the snow showers may
become relentless | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
across some eastern parts
of the country. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
So, by the end of Wednesday, | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
could be a good covering here
and there. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
The same pattern continues
into Wednesday, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
the snow showers pile into
eastern areas | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
and you get that message
that it's the east | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
that initially gets
most of the snow, | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
whereas out west, | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
it looks like the snow cover | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
will be quite patchy, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
cold during the day, | 0:02:04 | 0:02:05
below freezing for most of us. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
Now, just how thick will that
snow cover be across the UK? | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
Roughly 10-20 centimetres
across the eastern counties, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
whereas further south and west | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
you could see just from a dusting | 0:02:16 | 0:02:18
to perhaps just as much as
5 or 10 centimetres. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
But that is just a
very rough guess for now. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Thursday, early in the morning, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
a widespread frost across the UK,
obviously, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
and through Thursday itself, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
the weather could
really go downhill. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
And I must stress that across
some southern parts of the UK, | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
on top of the heavy snow, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
we could have gale force winds
and with that, some drifting. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
And the problem is that this
area of low pressure here | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
drifting out of the
south will get caught | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
in the cold current of air
coming out | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
of the near continent, so that means
that all of this here will be snow. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
Watch what happens
through the morning, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
snow falling from Cornwall,
Devon, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
through central southern England
into the London area, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:53
Wales, the Midlands too. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
You've got gale force winds
here with snow, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
that effectively is a
blizzard. | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
It's still not a certainty
but a possibility | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
and that will be disruptive across
the south. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
And watch what happens
during the day, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
that low pressure here
just lifts northwards | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
and engulfs much of the UK, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:09
so all of this here is snowfall, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
and to the south | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
we could even have a spell of
potentially some freezing rain | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
which could be even worse. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
So it's important to stay updated
with the latest weather forecasts, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:22
these things can change, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
but we are pretty certain | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
that there will be some problematic
weather | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
in the coming days. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:29 |
