race as it stands. That is all and would stay at 6:30 p.m.. Now, it is | :00:00. | :00:00.
time for the Film Review. Hello and welcome. To take us | :00:00. | :00:30.
through the cinema releases is Jason Solomon. | :00:31. | :00:36.
We look at a typically British form of heroism, can Eddie the Eagle | :00:37. | :00:44.
achieve the Olympic dream? Also, Victoria. A night of clubbing in | :00:45. | :00:47.
Berlin takes a turn for the dangerous. And they are poets but | :00:48. | :00:53.
they do not know it. Can a pair of con artist fake their way through a | :00:54. | :01:04.
weekend retreat? I have a real soft spot for Eddie the Eagle the person, | :01:05. | :01:08.
I had not seen the film. Unlike you I did not like him at the | :01:09. | :01:14.
time. I was not for the heroism around a man who finished last. Yes, | :01:15. | :01:19.
he was there, and well done, and he beat a British record which did not | :01:20. | :01:23.
really exist anyway, but I was really against that. I know it is | :01:24. | :01:27.
all about the taking part but I just thought it was all a bit of a | :01:28. | :01:33.
circus. If we remember back, at the time, we laughed at him, but this | :01:34. | :01:37.
film does is lets us laugh with him. It is a sports movie, by the movie, | :01:38. | :01:56.
a montage -fest that goes on. It will go for the heart strings. It is | :01:57. | :02:02.
dangerous stuff, this ski jumping. Everything OK? Fine, just getting | :02:03. | :02:40.
ready. Never done it before. Honestly? Could you give me a push? | :02:41. | :02:51.
A push? It is a lot higher than I expected it to be... | :02:52. | :02:57.
That scared me. We will not give the game away as to what happened next. | :02:58. | :03:03.
It is all about that, if starts with a montage of him trying out various | :03:04. | :03:07.
sports and breaking his classes. It is very much a British movie about | :03:08. | :03:12.
the class system, it was the British Olympic committee do not want him | :03:13. | :03:15.
coming in from nowhere and say he will never make it. And then he | :03:16. | :03:20.
does, of course. He jumps through the hoops and gets onto the team and | :03:21. | :03:24.
becomes a hero, but only because she is a failure. It is very | :03:25. | :03:29.
interesting, I never liked it in real life. But with the beer | :03:30. | :03:33.
goggles, and the jutting chin, and the relentless or as he has, just | :03:34. | :03:39.
like the Rocky training montages, and you don't have to like boxing to | :03:40. | :03:43.
light Rocky. You just love it when the montage comes together. As we | :03:44. | :03:49.
can see, the bouncing along, the falling over, it is very funny. The | :03:50. | :03:54.
director, Dexter Fletcher, you might know him as a child actor, he was in | :03:55. | :03:57.
press-gang, and has become a very good director. He did a warm-hearted | :03:58. | :04:04.
film called Sunshine on Leith, set to the music of the proclaimers, | :04:05. | :04:08.
which was a success against the odds. And he has done it again with | :04:09. | :04:12.
a warm-hearted sensibility which carries the movie through. Keith | :04:13. | :04:19.
Allen plays the father who just want Eddie to be a plasterer, and Joan | :04:20. | :04:23.
Hartley plays the lovely mother who nurtures her son forward. A very | :04:24. | :04:27.
British movie that has done well in the States, because they love an | :04:28. | :04:32.
underdog story. I do not love an underdog so much but with this, I | :04:33. | :04:36.
had tears in my eyes by the end. Victoria is either a work of genius, | :04:37. | :04:43.
possibly, or a bit of a gimmick? The poster says, one night, one | :04:44. | :04:48.
take. And what that means is it was done in one single shot. We have | :04:49. | :04:53.
seen it done before in Goodfellas. But not for the entire film. To | :04:54. | :05:00.
hours! How do you do it? It is about a girl called Victoria goes clubbing | :05:01. | :05:06.
in Berlin. She is Spanish and get caught up with these guys who are | :05:07. | :05:10.
about to do a bank job. Although she does not know it. And they get | :05:11. | :05:14.
caught up in this long night. I was reminded of Barry Davies. The free | :05:15. | :05:20.
kick against Arsenal. He says, he is not going to have a go from here, is | :05:21. | :05:26.
he? He is, you know! I thought, he will not do this in one take, but he | :05:27. | :05:32.
does, you know. They get kidnapped, they go off buildings, into a car, | :05:33. | :05:38.
the camera never cut at all, it is extraordinary to watch. But all that | :05:39. | :05:41.
is a gimmick unless the is good. And it is. It is a Great War around | :05:42. | :05:49.
movie, in Berlin, a bit like Richard Linkletter, and then suddenly there | :05:50. | :05:55.
are gangsters on the run. Berlin has an extraordinary | :05:56. | :06:00.
atmosphere about it. It has a very modern history. | :06:01. | :06:05.
Techno, clubbing, very cool, Berlin stuff. The music is done by the | :06:06. | :06:14.
European techno Meister who I must confess I like, and the | :06:15. | :06:21.
cinematography is a tour de force. You think, all in one take, is he | :06:22. | :06:26.
going to make it? But he takes it to a whole new level. It is something | :06:27. | :06:30.
you can only do now with the technology. Because you don't need | :06:31. | :06:35.
to change the real. But to keep it all in short, in focus, every | :06:36. | :06:38.
character, it is some achievement. And also a really good film. | :06:39. | :06:44.
Black Mountain Poets. A change of pace. Nobody is going | :06:45. | :06:56.
for anything extraordinary. Bolelli Wills has done this kind of thing | :06:57. | :07:01.
before, most noticeably with Emily Mortimer. They play a pair of con | :07:02. | :07:08.
artists on the run who pretend to be sisters and turn up at a retreat to | :07:09. | :07:13.
avoid the police. Can they make it through by pretending to be the | :07:14. | :07:19.
poets? Well, it is not very difficult, some people read out the | :07:20. | :07:22.
and call poetry. As they proved here. | :07:23. | :07:29.
You Microsoft is read out a utility bill or a receipt or something. | :07:30. | :07:31.
Maybe I will, OK. grocery shopping at Tesco .com? One | :07:32. | :08:15.
delivery slots from ?1. Click, and connect groceries. Dr Pepper, ?2. | :08:16. | :08:25.
Total, ?2. Cash, ?10. It is not Seamus Heaney but it is | :08:26. | :08:34.
very funny. It is very funny in parts, I have to say. It is not a | :08:35. | :08:38.
huge cinematic experience, but you saw Tom Cullen, from Downton Abbey, | :08:39. | :08:42.
often very funny, very improvised feel. That scene apparently was | :08:43. | :08:48.
totally improvised. Somebody said, have you got a receipt? They just | :08:49. | :08:53.
produced from the garage on the way to the shoot. So it has that | :08:54. | :08:58.
spontaneity to it. And when it works it is very funny. A sweet | :08:59. | :09:02.
relationship emerges between the sisters, and it takes the Mickey out | :09:03. | :09:07.
of beat poets. Which I'm sure it is very to do! | :09:08. | :09:16.
The best of the week is Anomalisa. This is the first puppet film I have | :09:17. | :09:21.
reviewed on this sort. It is from Charlie Kaufman, the man who gave us | :09:22. | :09:25.
the eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, and being John Malkovich. It | :09:26. | :09:28.
is very much about being inside his head. A tender, and vicious film | :09:29. | :09:35.
about a bloke having a midlife crisis in a Cincinnati hotel. He has | :09:36. | :09:41.
a relationship with a person attending his conference, voiced by | :09:42. | :09:48.
Jennifer Jason Leigh. She sings girls just Wanna have fun by Cyndi | :09:49. | :09:51.
Lauper in an extraordinary scene which becomes hilarious and tender. | :09:52. | :09:57.
I must warn you, there is puppet sex in this movie as well. But you | :09:58. | :10:01.
actually believe it, it is quite extraordinary. | :10:02. | :10:05.
Team America? Kermit and Miss Piggy. | :10:06. | :10:12.
We should leave that! Moving on, I can see a theme, technical wizardry | :10:13. | :10:20.
with new gadgets. Tangerine, shot on an iPhone. Sean | :10:21. | :10:27.
Baker made a very, very brilliant film. Not only is it shot on an | :10:28. | :10:38.
iPhone, it has two great performances in a very funny film, | :10:39. | :10:44.
like Victoria, sort of like a one night film, Christmas Eve, and their | :10:45. | :10:48.
relationship with their amps and the street. Beautifully performed and | :10:49. | :10:58.
the new marvel of cinema. It is where Hugh Grant once ended up | :10:59. | :11:03.
with Divine Brown. Don't want to remind him of that! | :11:04. | :11:08.
Thank you very much for watching. | :11:09. | :11:09. |
