Sunday's sports personality of the year show. That is all at 6:30pm. | :00:00. | :00:22.
Now, it is time for the film review. Welcome. To take us through this | :00:23. | :00:26.
week's cinema releases is Mark Kermode. He has already corrected my | :00:27. | :00:37.
prime station of the first film. We have to get it right, 161 minutes of | :00:38. | :00:43.
it. We also have a classic reissue from 1961, the innocence. A proper | :00:44. | :00:50.
chiller, the turn of the screw. We have Bill Boyd, a extraordinary love | :00:51. | :01:06.
story told from Tel Aviv. The first half of the film, everyone has to | :01:07. | :01:16.
realise it is smoke. They are now officially on their way. The kingdom | :01:17. | :01:20.
is over yonder and to get there, they will have to go through loads | :01:21. | :01:25.
of different places that, to some extent, are different levels on a | :01:26. | :01:31.
great big screen computer game, but crucially, while this is all | :01:32. | :01:36.
happening, the hobbit, who now has the ring with him, is changing. Here | :01:37. | :01:46.
is a clip. You have changed. You are not the | :01:47. | :01:55.
same hobbit is the one who left. I was going to tell you. I found | :01:56. | :02:07.
something in the goblin tunnels. Found what? What did you find? My | :02:08. | :02:26.
carriage. Good, that is good. You will need it. -- courage. I love all | :02:27. | :02:45.
that stuff. I am hooked. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was long as | :02:46. | :02:49.
well. The three movies together will add up to nine hours in total. It is | :02:50. | :02:59.
not really just the Hobbit. There is loads of other material being | :03:00. | :03:04.
brought in. There is so much else being thrown in as well. On the | :03:05. | :03:10.
upside this moves on a pace. You remember the first movie. There was | :03:11. | :03:14.
half an hour of sitting around, drinking tea and singing songs. With | :03:15. | :03:21.
this movie they are off. They are into battles and chases. There are | :03:22. | :03:29.
spectacular sights. We have elves and dwarfs and massive dragons. The | :03:30. | :03:39.
problem with it, to some extent, I still can't help but think that | :03:40. | :03:43.
reigning everything in would have made it tighter, more compact and | :03:44. | :03:50.
more digestible. If you are a fan of the Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings you | :03:51. | :03:53.
know what you will get. This requires you going in at the | :03:54. | :03:57.
beginning and saying, we will be here for a long time and at the end | :03:58. | :04:02.
there will be -- we will be nowhere near the end. Some of this looks to | :04:03. | :04:09.
CGI. Every now and then you get them going over a natural landscape in | :04:10. | :04:13.
New Zealand. You are so relieved to have the physical landscape, as | :04:14. | :04:17.
opposed to yet another digitally created mountain. It does lack | :04:18. | :04:24.
physicality. It suggests that by the time you get to the third instalment | :04:25. | :04:27.
it might have all finally come into place. It is not in Lord Of The | :04:28. | :04:36.
Rings territory yet. I do think the first Hobbit movie was | :04:37. | :04:38.
disappointing. This is an improvement but there is some way to | :04:39. | :04:45.
go in every sense of that. That is the problem with that. What about | :04:46. | :04:56.
the innocence? It is shot in CinemaScope, black and white. A | :04:57. | :05:03.
fantastic performance by Deborah Kerr. It is a film that does that | :05:04. | :05:08.
brilliant thing of suggesting. There is always the suggestion something | :05:09. | :05:13.
is happening in the end. There is a governess of two young children. She | :05:14. | :05:18.
is convinced they are demonic or possessed. What the film does is | :05:19. | :05:22.
constantly suggests all of this is in her mind to use the apparitions | :05:23. | :05:29.
and ghosts. The natural sound in the film is terrific. It does what | :05:30. | :05:34.
really great ghost story does. It gives you the sensation of a cold | :05:35. | :05:38.
hand on the back of the neck. It is not about shouting blue and quiet | :05:39. | :05:42.
followed by a loud bang. It is to do with a genuine sense of the uncanny | :05:43. | :05:48.
you must have seen it. Some modern movies have followed the same | :05:49. | :05:54.
scene. It is someone who is mentally ill and imagining all of this. What | :05:55. | :06:02.
is horror? The crucial thing is it is about the uncanny. The eerie | :06:03. | :06:06.
feeling of the uncanny and something being wrong. The sound of children | :06:07. | :06:17.
laughing being terrifying. The innocent will make you anxious but | :06:18. | :06:21.
it does not set out to shout do at you. It is about drawing you into | :06:22. | :06:27.
its atmosphere. I really like the film. -- I really like the film, | :06:28. | :06:38.
Fill The Void. Then what happens is tragedy strikes | :06:39. | :07:57.
the family. The future she thought she would have is up in the air. | :07:58. | :08:01.
There is a suggestion the only way she can heal the wounds of the | :08:02. | :08:04.
family is to do something they wanted to do. To change marriage | :08:05. | :08:11.
plans and put her own needs side. The really interesting thing about | :08:12. | :08:20.
this is it is set in a very insular communities. The director compares | :08:21. | :08:27.
it to the sort of society defined by Jane Austin. The women characters | :08:28. | :08:33.
are living a very restrictive life but it is their stories. They drive | :08:34. | :08:38.
the narrative. They are the focus of the drama. What is so interesting | :08:39. | :08:43.
about this is, it is not a film about the breaking out of the | :08:44. | :08:47.
community. Quite the opposite. It is about within the community. There is | :08:48. | :08:53.
a traditional and ordered way of life. It shows within it a quite | :08:54. | :08:59.
extraordinary degree of self well, self-determination. Each one of the | :09:00. | :09:04.
women characters has a very powerful - quietly powerful - voice. It is | :09:05. | :09:14.
filmed beautifully. The use of the music in the film is interesting. | :09:15. | :09:19.
She plays the accordion. There is an underlying narrative which is played | :09:20. | :09:23.
out all the way through the film. Some people may look at it and think | :09:24. | :09:27.
it is too insular a view of the world. I thought it was fully | :09:28. | :09:31.
sympathetic with its characters. You really care about them and believe | :09:32. | :09:37.
in the situation. Very small gestures and nuances mean such a | :09:38. | :09:42.
lot. Compare it to the raging dragons of the Hobbit. This is all | :09:43. | :09:48.
to do with the smallest tilt of a head and a glance. I thought it was | :09:49. | :09:52.
really enchanting. I thought it was very enriching, intelligent and | :09:53. | :09:57.
smart. I would encourage people to see it. We are not going to do the | :09:58. | :10:05.
best of the week, which is Nebraska or the DVD. Back in October, Mark | :10:06. | :10:13.
commode and may have film review launched a short film competition | :10:14. | :10:25.
asking for amateurs to produce a two-minute film. Here is a taster of | :10:26. | :10:28.
what the finalist came up with. This is my garden! I will fight you | :10:29. | :11:19.
for it. What an inventive lot! We had to say | :11:20. | :11:58.
it had to be two minutes long and suitable for everyone. What was | :11:59. | :12:04.
wonderful was how diverse you were. You had animation. You had live | :12:05. | :12:13.
action, comedy. Some involved very young kids. It was really terrific. | :12:14. | :12:19.
We had hundreds of entries. We have got it down to a short list. It was | :12:20. | :12:25.
really impressive. Two minutes and it must be used certificate. It is | :12:26. | :12:29.
astonishing what people came up with. It was really encouraging. | :12:30. | :12:37.
What a great idea! You can watch all seven films in full on the website. | :12:38. | :12:42.
The winner, as we mentioned, will be announced next week. Thank you for | :12:43. | :12:46.
watching and goodbye. Good evening. A much quieter night | :12:47. | :13:00.
tonight across the British Isles than last night. Gone is the cloud | :13:01. | :13:05.
and rain. Also gone, some of that exceptional warmth. Last night, lows | :13:06. | :13:14.
of seven degrees. Tonight, a few patches of fog. Still rain around | :13:15. | :13:15. |
