day one of the second and decisive test`macro. That is coming up at | :00:00. | :00:00.
6:30pm. Now on BBC News, it is time for The Film Review. | :00:00. | :00:21.
Hello. Welcome to The Film Review. Here is Mark Kermode. What do we | :00:22. | :00:30.
have this week? I am going to jump in, Jersey Boys. I am looking | :00:31. | :00:36.
forward to this. We have got coming up, as you say, Jersey Boys. I know | :00:37. | :00:43.
you have seen the stage musical and loved it. Then we have Chinese | :00:44. | :00:51.
Puzzle, the third instalment of the ongoing international romance. And 3 | :00:52. | :00:59.
Days to Kill. Kevin Costner is back in action. Jersey Boys, you loved | :01:00. | :01:09.
the stage musical. I adored it. As apparently did everyone who saw it. | :01:10. | :01:15.
The minute the songs are on, they are up and dancing. This is an | :01:16. | :01:19.
adaptation of the story of the four seasons directed on`screen by Clint | :01:20. | :01:26.
Eastwood. He has directed the Charlie Parker biopic in the past. | :01:27. | :01:30.
Clint Eastwood, rather than seeing it as a musical, he seems to see it | :01:31. | :01:34.
more as a drama about four Street kids, some of whom who have seen the | :01:35. | :01:38.
inside of the slammer. They have vague connections with characters | :01:39. | :01:43.
who perhaps you would see in a movie like Goodfellas. Whilst there are | :01:44. | :01:49.
the musical numbers, Clint Eastwood is more interested in the | :01:50. | :01:51.
interaction between the characters and their background. Here is a | :01:52. | :01:58.
clip. This is crazy. We have got to find a club. Want we want is a | :01:59. | :02:04.
record contract. You cannot even booked a lousy bowling alley. You | :02:05. | :02:12.
are in this group. Which one? Who are we going to be next, Tommy? | :02:13. | :02:29.
Frankie. What? It is a sign, Tommy! I still like the four Felons. They | :02:30. | :02:41.
are singing these close harmonies, voices of angels. There is a big | :02:42. | :02:47.
thing of rock 'n' roll of people adopting an outlaw persona. In the | :02:48. | :02:51.
biopic of Johnny Cash, his dad said, now you will not have to work so | :02:52. | :02:55.
hard to make people think you have been to prison, after he has been | :02:56. | :03:00.
arrested. They are making clean cut records in this film. I like the | :03:01. | :03:06.
fact print is to ward is seeing it like a Goodfellas inflected story. | :03:07. | :03:10.
What you lack is the love of the music `` I like the fact that Clint | :03:11. | :03:16.
Eastwood is seeing it. You have to have an ear for that kind of bubble | :03:17. | :03:22.
gum pop. I do. If you listen to the way those songs are used in other | :03:23. | :03:25.
films, they really jump off the screen. Here, strangely enough, the | :03:26. | :03:31.
musical numbers... It is a strange thing to say, but they are slightly | :03:32. | :03:37.
flat. The drama is the interesting thing, the closeness to the | :03:38. | :03:40.
underworld characters, the fact that they have dragged themselves up by | :03:41. | :03:45.
their bootstraps. He is less interested in the records | :03:46. | :03:48.
themselves. What really sold the stage show was how much people love | :03:49. | :03:54.
seeing the numbers performed live. It is solid. It is not as special as | :03:55. | :04:00.
perhaps it ought to be. It is however solid. Right. Now, Chinese | :04:01. | :04:07.
Puzzle. It is the third instalment in this ongoing romance. | :04:08. | :04:13.
Essentially, this works anyway before sunrise, Before Sunset Before | :04:14. | :04:27.
Midnight. This time the action plays out in New York, Chinatown, he has | :04:28. | :04:33.
been separated from his long`term partner and he wants to Beano his | :04:34. | :04:37.
kids. He is helping a lesbian couple to have a child. `` he wants to be | :04:38. | :04:43.
near. It is complicated, as he says. The film itself however is very | :04:44. | :04:49.
light. Cappuccino philosophy. That said, it is rather charming. These | :04:50. | :04:53.
characters have been around for a long time and they are well played. | :04:54. | :04:56.
It has a lot of heart. It does not have a lot of depth despite the | :04:57. | :05:01.
weird cameos from philosophers who wander in in a Woody Allen like | :05:02. | :05:06.
weight to make philosophical jokes. Light, frothy, fun. Do you have to | :05:07. | :05:14.
have seen the others? No. You can jump in. Despite the fact he says it | :05:15. | :05:21.
is complicated, it is not that complicated. Kevin Costner, 3 Days | :05:22. | :05:27.
to Kill. Do I know about this film a bit without having seen it? Sadly, I | :05:28. | :05:31.
have been a Kevin Costner film in the past... This is directed by the | :05:32. | :05:37.
man who directed Charlie's Angels. And also Terminator Salvation. He is | :05:38. | :05:43.
a terrible director. Airheaded candy floss of the highest order. The | :05:44. | :05:48.
story is Kevin Costner is a CIA hit man who has been diagnosed with a | :05:49. | :05:51.
terminal illness, terminal cancer, and he goes to Paris in order to | :05:52. | :05:56.
reconcile himself with his wife and daughter who we need to teach to | :05:57. | :05:59.
ride a bicycle. He is contacted by an agent who tells him... Stick with | :06:00. | :06:05.
me. She has a special new chemical that will make him better possibly | :06:06. | :06:09.
if he killed a bunch of people for her. Really. Here is a clip. | :06:10. | :06:25.
I can see you do not believe in the customary 48 hour window between | :06:26. | :06:32.
pills. You only have three days left. `` between kills. I am not | :06:33. | :06:40.
getting into your car. Not before I get a second opinion on whatever it | :06:41. | :06:45.
was you gave me. I told you it was kosher. Now it is not. The manual | :06:46. | :06:51.
says, if I cannot keep my heart rate low, the chip will act like a | :06:52. | :06:57.
hallucinogenic. Keep your heart rate low. That is kind of hard with the | :06:58. | :07:04.
job you have me doing. Get in the car. You noticed the scarf he was | :07:05. | :07:11.
wearing, very important. He has sat there and thought, I am playing a | :07:12. | :07:15.
conflicted character. I have got to kill a bunch of people. I am not | :07:16. | :07:19.
making this up. The way he demonstrates this conflict in his | :07:20. | :07:23.
life is he wears the scarf through the film to the point that you are | :07:24. | :07:28.
transfixed by a tossed stop, the torture scenes. It is so empty and | :07:29. | :07:40.
airheaded, it makes things like Waterworld seem profound. Kevin | :07:41. | :07:46.
Costner doing sub Liam Neeson. Kevin Costner has done great work in the | :07:47. | :07:50.
past. People make jokes about him. But he was a great screen presence. | :07:51. | :07:55.
This is him attempting to turn himself into a big action star. The | :07:56. | :07:59.
problem is that it is so stupid. Stupid in a way that it is kind of | :08:00. | :08:03.
insulting. You are thinking, I am actually cross with this movie is | :08:04. | :08:07.
for imagining for three seconds that I would buy into any of this. It is | :08:08. | :08:11.
a real shame but it is really bad. Right. OK for top was likely? | :08:12. | :08:19.
Crystal clear. He was very unshaven and so on but he looked extremely | :08:20. | :08:24.
well. Exactly. Not like someone who had three days to live. Not like a | :08:25. | :08:33.
Breaking Bad central figure. Best at question at I think Belle is the | :08:34. | :08:38.
best movie out. It is terrific. `` best movie out? It is about the end | :08:39. | :08:43.
of the slave trade and race relations but it is dressed up as a | :08:44. | :08:49.
costume drama. A society romance. What the director has done is to | :08:50. | :08:54.
take this very potent story and turn it into something that is very | :08:55. | :08:59.
mainstream, very multiplex Frannie `` very important story. You could | :09:00. | :09:06.
enjoy it like you would enjoy an adaptation of a Jane Austen novel. | :09:07. | :09:09.
Beautifully directed. Very well played. A very fine film indeed. | :09:10. | :09:16.
Well received. The reviews have been terrific. In some places in America | :09:17. | :09:23.
it has outsold these Spiderman movie. Best DVD? This is Her, the | :09:24. | :09:30.
Spike Jonze movie. A man falls in love with his computer operating | :09:31. | :09:34.
system. When it came out, I was uncertain about it. It felt very | :09:35. | :09:38.
clinical, like it did not have much emotional engagement. I want to | :09:39. | :09:42.
watch it again because it looked absolutely beautiful and it is an | :09:43. | :09:46.
interesting idea about artificial intelligence and the way in which | :09:47. | :09:49.
people fake emotions. I am choosing this because I want to go back and | :09:50. | :09:53.
give it a second go. I am sure it is one of those things that improves. | :09:54. | :09:57.
The first time, I felt it was very cold. Maybe that is deliberate. If | :09:58. | :10:01.
you are making a movie about someone who falls in love with a computer, | :10:02. | :10:04.
maybe it is meant to be cold. I think it needs a second chance. Do | :10:05. | :10:09.
you think in the short time when it was made and now, a lot of the | :10:10. | :10:14.
things it talks about seem to be coming rushing towards us? | :10:15. | :10:21.
Interactions with machinery... The story is as old as the hills. | :10:22. | :10:25.
Science`fiction is always about people falling in love with their | :10:26. | :10:33.
computers. There are episodes of TV series in which they do that basic | :10:34. | :10:37.
idea. People make jokes about falling in love with their Saturn | :10:38. | :10:43.
haves. `` satellite navigation. It wants to be more with that `` more | :10:44. | :10:51.
than that. Thank you, as ever. You will find more film news and reviews | :10:52. | :11:02.
from Mark on his BBC blog. That is it for this week. Thank you for | :11:03. | :11:04.
watching. Goodbye. The weather is going to slowly | :11:05. | :11:21.
change next week. Unusually, the weekend looks great. There will be a | :11:22. | :11:26.
lot of dry weather around, no rain to speak of really. Good sunny | :11:27. | :11:31.
spells too. It should feel pleasantly warm. All quiet at the | :11:32. | :11:32.
moment | :11:33. | :11:33. |
