On today's show, we've got wind, rain and a giant cloud in the studio,

7:00:357:00:38

so, you know what? I'm not taking my chances.

7:00:387:00:41

Linds, we don't need to be quite that prepared.

7:00:417:00:43

Oh, really?

7:00:437:00:44

THUNDER AND LIGHTNING RUMBLES

7:00:447:00:46

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

7:01:047:01:06

Hello, and welcome to live Blue Peter!

7:01:067:01:08

Coming up on today's show, I'll be showing you how to make

7:01:087:01:11

your very own Blue Peter Christmas card 2015.

7:01:117:01:14

It is a cracker!

7:01:147:01:16

POPPING

7:01:167:01:17

Literally. SHE LAUGHS

7:01:177:01:19

This hero of a scientist, Greg Foot,

7:01:197:01:21

is back in the house with a belter of a weather experiment.

7:01:217:01:24

What can we expect, my friend?

7:01:247:01:25

Oh, I'm only going to fill the whole studio with a cloud.

7:01:257:01:28

I cannot wait for that. And that's not all.

7:01:287:01:30

Check this out.

7:01:307:01:32

Woohoo!

7:01:327:01:34

Oh, yeah!

7:01:347:01:35

'I get put through my paces in the air and in the water,

7:01:357:01:38

'all as a part of my wind turbine adventure.'

7:01:387:01:41

That looks so cool.

7:01:417:01:42

And, because we're talking about extreme weather today,

7:01:427:01:45

we want to hear from you, it's a live show, isn't it?

7:01:457:01:47

So get in touch with us and tell us if anything

7:01:477:01:49

could pour out of the sky today for you, what would it be?

7:01:497:01:52

-BOTH:

-And why?

7:01:527:01:53

Head to the website.

7:01:537:01:55

We will read your comments at the end of the show.

7:01:577:01:59

Now, you can probably tell the man, the myth,

7:01:597:02:01

Barney Harwood is not here. He is on holiday.

7:02:017:02:03

However, before he left, he did a spot of gardening,

7:02:037:02:06

extreme gardening, at extreme heights. Check this out.

7:02:067:02:09

JUNGLE SOUNDS

7:02:117:02:12

MONKEYS SHRIEK

7:02:127:02:13

I think I'm lost.

7:02:157:02:16

I'm never going to see Radzi again.

7:02:187:02:20

You know you can use the paths, Barney?

7:02:207:02:22

Yeah, I'll just use that. Ooh!

7:02:227:02:25

'OK, so I'm not actually lost in the jungle.

7:02:257:02:27

'I'm in the world's largest indoor rainforest at the Eden Project

7:02:277:02:31

'in Cornwall, home to over two million plants.'

7:02:317:02:34

'Some of the tropical plants in these giant domes, known as biomes,

7:02:377:02:40

'can grow to be seriously tall.

7:02:407:02:42

'And I've heard they need my help to trim them.

7:02:427:02:45

'Let's get some gardening gear on.'

7:02:457:02:47

Well, I wasn't expecting this.

7:02:487:02:50

But I am kitted out to do some extreme gardening.

7:02:507:02:52

And the girl to show me the ropes is Hetty.

7:02:527:02:55

Now, she says she hangs around here, but, erm...

7:02:557:02:57

I haven't seen her. Have you seen her anywhere?

7:02:577:02:59

Hey, Barney? You ready?

7:02:597:03:01

'Ah! There she is.

7:03:017:03:02

'Hetty is one of the horticulturalists here,

7:03:027:03:04

'who looks after all the plants, and she's taking me right up

7:03:047:03:07

'into the tree canopy to start pruning.'

7:03:077:03:09

'I'm using a technique called jugging,

7:03:117:03:13

'where I make myself go higher by pulling on my rope.

7:03:137:03:16

'It sounds really hard, but it's actually surprisingly easy.

7:03:167:03:19

'And before no time, I'm up in the trees.'

7:03:197:03:21

Why do you have to prune these?

7:03:227:03:24

Tropical trees grow really, really fast.

7:03:247:03:26

And they get so big that they start to grow into the side

7:03:267:03:30

of the biome structure.

7:03:307:03:32

How do you maintain the conditions of a real rainforest?

7:03:327:03:34

-So we've got this fantastic structure above us.

-Yeah.

7:03:347:03:37

Which is really efficient.

7:03:377:03:39

As soon as that sun comes out, it captures all the heat

7:03:397:03:41

and helps to keep it really nice and warm.

7:03:417:03:44

It can get up to about 43 degrees in here.

7:03:447:03:46

Maybe higher, right at the top.

7:03:467:03:48

That's hotter than going to Spain on holiday

7:03:487:03:50

-at the height of summer, isn't it? That's...

-Yeah.

-That's real heat.

7:03:507:03:53

-So if I trim this one.

-Yes, please.

-Just about there?

7:03:537:03:56

-Yeah, that'll do nicely.

-Nice clean cut.

7:03:567:03:59

Big branch falling.

7:03:597:04:00

Coming down.

7:04:017:04:03

'And, while we're up here, Hetty wants to show me some of the sights.

7:04:047:04:08

We're about eight metres up today,

7:04:087:04:09

which is quite a little climb for us.

7:04:097:04:12

-That big tree you can see over there, our kapok.

-Yeah.

7:04:127:04:14

-That's 30 metres high now.

-Wow.

7:04:147:04:16

And from the top of that platform down to the ground is 50 metres.

7:04:167:04:19

-That's insanely high, isn't it?

-It is.

7:04:197:04:21

-Shall we go down?

-Yes.

7:04:217:04:23

'So there you have it.

7:04:237:04:24

'Pruning a rainforest, tick.

7:04:247:04:26

'But it's not just tropical trees growing here.

7:04:267:04:29

'There are all kinds of plants from around the world,

7:04:297:04:31

'including South American cocoa beans.'

7:04:317:04:34

Wait, did I just say cocoa?

7:04:347:04:36

-HE GASPS

-I did!

7:04:367:04:37

Well, you know what that means.

7:04:377:04:39

That means we're surrounded by chocolate.

7:04:397:04:41

Everyone stop filming, we're having lunch.

7:04:417:04:44

Come on, Barney! We've got work to do.

7:04:447:04:46

'What? More work? Oh, OK.

7:04:467:04:49

'Next on the list is picking papayas.'

7:04:497:04:51

-I'm going to cut and you're going to catch.

-Ah, this is cool.

7:04:517:04:54

So first one.

7:04:547:04:56

-Got it, got it, got it!

-Whoa!

7:04:567:04:57

Yes! First one in and then it's just splattered everywhere.

7:04:577:05:01

-Whoa!

-Yes!

-Whoa!

7:05:017:05:02

Yeah, look at that!

7:05:027:05:03

Got it, got it, got it!

7:05:057:05:06

Yes, we're in! Beautiful.

7:05:067:05:08

I think I broke the camera.

7:05:087:05:10

'After the fruit is picked, it goes on display,

7:05:107:05:12

'so that visitors can learn about the different types of food

7:05:127:05:15

'grown around the world.'

7:05:157:05:17

OK, Hetty, so far we've climbed to the top of some trees,

7:05:177:05:20

done a bit of pruning.

7:05:207:05:21

We've picked some fruit, that was cool.

7:05:217:05:23

You've told me that we can't have any chocolate. What's next?

7:05:237:05:26

So the final job today involves chillies.

7:05:267:05:28

-VOICE ECHOES:

-Chillies.

-DRAMATIC MUSIC

7:05:287:05:30

'Not chillies!'

7:05:307:05:32

MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding

7:05:337:05:34

'I still have nightmares about that live chilli-eating challenge.'

7:05:347:05:38

# And we gonna let it burn. #

7:05:387:05:40

LAUGHTER Barney's gone.

7:05:407:05:41

-ECHOING: Barney's gone.

-Barney? Barney?

7:05:417:05:43

-Barney?

-Yeah?

7:05:437:05:44

Hi, Hetty. Chillies.

7:05:447:05:46

Erm...love chillies.

7:05:467:05:48

Wh...what, er, what does it involve?

7:05:487:05:49

We're going to harvest some chillies.

7:05:497:05:51

-We're going to harvest them?

-Yeah.

-We're going to pick them?

7:05:517:05:54

-That's all we're doing?

-That's all we're doing.

7:05:547:05:56

I love picking chillies! Show me where they are!

7:05:567:05:58

FLAMENCO MUSIC

7:05:587:05:59

-IN SPANISH ACCENT:

-'Say hello to the habanero chilli.

7:05:597:06:01

'These little fellas are hot. In fact, they are so hot,

7:06:017:06:04

'we have to wear gloves before we can start picking them.'

7:06:047:06:07

Why do think it's important to grow lots of different things?

7:06:077:06:10

And why here at the Eden Project?

7:06:107:06:11

Well, we want to show people how dependent they are upon plants.

7:06:117:06:15

Without plants, we wouldn't be eating, we wouldn't have shelter.

7:06:157:06:20

A lot of the clothes that we are wearing are made from plants,

7:06:207:06:23

so we are here to reconnect people.

7:06:237:06:25

Well, I happen to know from experience that a jalapeno,

7:06:257:06:28

which is the kind of pepper you would get on your pizza,

7:06:287:06:31

it's got a little bit of a tingle to it, hasn't it?

7:06:317:06:33

-A little bit spicy.

-Mm-hm.

7:06:337:06:34

Well, these are 200 times hotter than one of those.

7:06:347:06:38

That's how bad boy these are.

7:06:387:06:40

They look nice and juicy, though, don't they?

7:06:407:06:42

Mm, do you want to try one?

7:06:427:06:44

No, thank you.

7:06:447:06:45

MUSIC: Burn by Ellie Goulding

7:06:457:06:46

'Yeah, steady on, Hetty.'

7:06:467:06:48

I've got to say, I had a brilliant time here at the Eden Project.

7:06:487:06:50

I can't wait to get back in the Blue Peter garden.

7:06:507:06:52

I'm going to plant a massive papaya tree.

7:06:527:06:54

Oh, and don't worry, Radzi, I've er...

7:06:547:06:56

I've got you some chillies.

7:06:567:06:57

FLAMENCO MUSIC

7:06:577:06:59

I loved that chilli challenge. Very funny.

7:06:597:07:01

But now it's time for one of our annual highlights because

7:07:017:07:04

for years and years, Blue Peter presenters have been showing you

7:07:047:07:06

how to make your very own creative Christmas cards.

7:07:067:07:10

They're always great and you can make them cheaply and easily.

7:07:107:07:12

We've made so many over the years.

7:07:127:07:14

They're very easy to make.

7:07:147:07:15

Each card has a pipe cleaner.

7:07:157:07:17

All you need is some brightly-coloured card,

7:07:177:07:19

scraps of fabric and glitter.

7:07:197:07:21

It is a card with a difference, as it has a built-in snow globe.

7:07:217:07:25

This card is really personal and one that money can't buy.

7:07:257:07:28

And there is that glitter.

7:07:287:07:30

And there we have a finished star.

7:07:307:07:33

And there we have our finished Christmas card.

7:07:337:07:35

I'll give it a little shake there.

7:07:357:07:37

-Woo!

-APPLAUSE

7:07:377:07:38

It really is the best make of the year, isn't it?

7:07:387:07:40

You're going to love what we've come up with for 2015.

7:07:407:07:42

Have a look at this!

7:07:427:07:43

It's your very own Christmas card, with a surprise cracker.

7:07:437:07:46

SHE LAUGHS

7:07:467:07:48

We love it and I'm going to show you exactly how to make it.

7:07:487:07:50

So, for that, you are going to need the following things.

7:07:507:07:53

A template from the Blue Peter website.

7:07:537:07:55

You'll need some corrugated card, so basically a cardboard box.

7:07:557:07:58

Some sparkly or coloured card,

7:07:587:08:00

thin, shiny plastic and, of course,

7:08:007:08:01

loads of photos of your family and friends.

7:08:017:08:03

You can make it really personal and really fun.

7:08:037:08:05

It really is such a good make, so listen carefully.

7:08:057:08:08

The first thing you need to do is head to that

7:08:087:08:10

trusty old Blue Peter website. Get yourself one of these templates.

7:08:107:08:13

You can see it's kind of split in half there.

7:08:137:08:15

You've got an H shape

7:08:157:08:17

and then you got the end of your crackers there.

7:08:177:08:19

So you need to cut around those and, when you've done that,

7:08:197:08:21

grab your corrugated card

7:08:217:08:23

and your shiny paper, like so,

7:08:237:08:25

and then you need to, once again,

7:08:257:08:27

draw around them, all the way around the outside of the stencil

7:08:277:08:29

and cut out those shapes.

7:08:297:08:31

So, once you've done that...

7:08:317:08:32

Try and be neat, because you will need those shapes to be pretty exact

7:08:327:08:36

if you want your mechanism to work.

7:08:367:08:38

So...we're going to use the H first.

7:08:387:08:40

You can see I've cut around nice and neatly there.

7:08:407:08:42

Take your time with that. Ask an adult to help.

7:08:427:08:44

And, with the H, the first thing I'm going to do

7:08:447:08:47

is grab my bit of plastic.

7:08:477:08:49

You can see there, I've just got a little strip of plastic

7:08:497:08:52

and all I've done there is used it

7:08:527:08:53

off a previous greeting card.

7:08:537:08:55

Nice and easy, but any plastic really will do.

7:08:557:08:58

So...wrap it round your H, like so.

7:08:587:09:00

It can be a bit fiddly, this bit, so take your time.

7:09:007:09:03

And make sure it's not too tight,

7:09:037:09:05

otherwise your mechanism isn't going to work.

7:09:057:09:08

So I'll just stick it nice and neatly there. And you should see,

7:09:087:09:10

when I hold it up, that that kind of just moves around.

7:09:107:09:13

It's very delicate at this stage,

7:09:137:09:14

but it is moving and that's going to make

7:09:147:09:16

our cracker pop a little bit later on.

7:09:167:09:18

Now, grab your two shiny bits.

7:09:187:09:21

These are your cracker ends

7:09:217:09:22

and turn one of them over, like so.

7:09:227:09:25

Now, you've got your two ends and I've just put a little bit

7:09:257:09:27

of double-sided sticky tape on the end there.

7:09:277:09:29

So, grab your shiny side and just simply stick that down,

7:09:297:09:32

make it really neat and line-up...

7:09:327:09:35

Can you see that?

7:09:357:09:36

..with the edge of your kind of H shape there.

7:09:367:09:38

Then turn it over, like so,

7:09:387:09:41

grab your other bit.

7:09:417:09:43

And then stick it,

7:09:437:09:44

like so, along that H.

7:09:447:09:47

There we go. And, once you've patted it down, hopefully this will work...

7:09:477:09:51

Eh! It certainly does!

7:09:517:09:53

And, once you've done it nice and neatly,

7:09:537:09:55

it should look something like this one.

7:09:557:09:56

And it should really kind of pop like that.

7:09:567:09:59

Now, if I grab this one, I'll just show you the back of it,

7:09:597:10:01

because it is still looking a little bit messy at the back there.

7:10:017:10:04

So, the next thing you need to do...

7:10:047:10:06

grab your paper, like so.

7:10:067:10:08

I've gone for silver, cos it's nice and festive.

7:10:087:10:11

Should be A4 size. Cut that in half.

7:10:117:10:14

Then, all I have done is just simply folded it in half again, like that.

7:10:147:10:17

Now, we are going to plonk our cracker into the middle of the card.

7:10:177:10:22

I am just going to use a little bit of double-sided sticky tape, like so.

7:10:227:10:26

And then, neatly, hopefully, I am just going - oh, this side! -

7:10:267:10:29

I am just going to plonk it in, like that. There we go.

7:10:297:10:33

Hopefully, that will stick down.

7:10:337:10:35

And then, fold your card over,

7:10:357:10:37

like so. Make sure your sides are out, so they don't get stuck down.

7:10:377:10:41

Once I have gone along, like that,

7:10:417:10:43

it should work, fingers crossed! There we go!

7:10:437:10:46

Now it's time for the fun bit, cos we get to decorate our cracker

7:10:467:10:49

and make it look really realistic.

7:10:497:10:51

So, for that, I have just, kind of, done a cracker shape, really.

7:10:517:10:54

You can do anything you want. That is the whole fun part of this make -

7:10:547:10:58

you can make it your own.

7:10:587:10:59

I am going to make it look like a cracker, with my cracker middle.

7:10:597:11:02

Boom. And then, time for a bit of decoration.

7:11:027:11:05

So, it is Christmas, of course. I have gone for a beautiful little

7:11:057:11:08

Christmas pud. That is made out of foam. We have just used a pen,

7:11:087:11:11

to make the raisins on there. And some little baubles. Very pretty.

7:11:117:11:15

Then, of course, all crackers have a little bit of glittery ribbon

7:11:157:11:18

on the side. Again, we have used some foam there.

7:11:187:11:22

I am going to put it on the side,

7:11:227:11:24

so it looks like one bit of the ribbon.

7:11:247:11:25

And on the other side here. It is really starting to take shape now.

7:11:257:11:29

But we need our little surprise in there. So, I thought,

7:11:297:11:32

"What does everyone want at Christmas?" Of course -

7:11:327:11:35

Barney and Radzi's faces. That's definitely what I want.

7:11:357:11:37

So, I have got Radzi on this side, in his little winter scarf.

7:11:377:11:41

Look at him! And then, Barney, cos I'm missing him today,

7:11:417:11:44

I have got him in his little winter scarf, there, as well!

7:11:447:11:46

So, we are getting there! Look at that! Of course, you want it

7:11:467:11:49

to stand up, looking very proud on your mantelpiece, so to do that,

7:11:497:11:53

grab a little bit of extra card from earlier.

7:11:537:11:56

I am just using some silver card, with a bit of double-sided tape.

7:11:567:11:59

Plonk that on the back, like so. Doesn't have to be too neat,

7:11:597:12:02

but leave a little space at the top for your Christmas message.

7:12:027:12:06

Think how cool you can make it.

7:12:067:12:07

You can put anything on there you want.

7:12:077:12:09

It's your surprise cracker card! We made loads earlier.

7:12:097:12:12

They really do look so cool. We have got one here of little Iggy's face!

7:12:127:12:16

She is wearing a little hat. We have got a Christmas wreath there.

7:12:167:12:19

Blue Peter ship. You can honestly do anything you want.

7:12:197:12:23

All the details and the templates you are going to need are on

7:12:237:12:26

the Blue Peter website...

7:12:267:12:28

I love this, you know, and I am not the only one. Check this out.

7:12:287:12:32

It's THE Christmas card that is taking the television world

7:12:327:12:35

by storm.

7:12:357:12:37

From everyone at Casualty, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

7:12:377:12:41

-BOTH: One, two, three!

-Whay! Look at that!

7:12:417:12:44

Thank you for this fantastic Christmas card you have made me.

7:12:447:12:47

-Does it do something?

-Yeah, we pull it.

-Ooh!

7:12:477:12:50

BOTH: Have a great Christmas.

7:12:507:12:52

Thank you, Blue Peter! You're fantastic!

7:12:527:12:55

Susanna Reid, of course it does something!

7:12:577:12:59

It's your surprise card. We want you to make one.

7:12:597:13:01

Send us anything you like of your Christmas card.

7:13:017:13:04

The address you need is...

7:13:047:13:08

I am going to go have a sit-down. Make your cards! Radzi...

7:13:087:13:11

I love it when something is really simple, yet awesome,

7:13:117:13:14

at the same time. Now, though, another Christmas tradition,

7:13:147:13:17

which began on Blue Peter over 50 years ago, is this -

7:13:177:13:22

the advent calendar. You came running, Linds.

7:13:227:13:24

-We love the advent calendar.

-We do!

-The special part of it is,

7:13:247:13:27

for the next four shows, we'll be lighting one of those candles,

7:13:277:13:30

to count down until our Christmas show on December 17th. We can't wait.

7:13:307:13:33

We really cannot wait. The candles here are battery-powered.

7:13:337:13:37

Can we ask for the lights just to be dimmed a tiny bit?

7:13:377:13:39

As I rotate this, you can see we've already got there one candle lit,

7:13:397:13:43

which means we are only three weeks away from the Christmas show

7:13:437:13:46

-and I cannot wait!

-I have got your present. Have you got mine?

-No.

7:13:467:13:50

You need to go shopping, Radz. Let's walk this way,

7:13:507:13:53

to the Big Badge Wall, covered in all of your brilliant post.

7:13:537:13:56

And it is looking very colourful this week. Sophie, who is 12, from Essex,

7:13:567:13:59

has done this. She has got a little Blue Peter Shelley there,

7:13:597:14:02

the badge and, of course, she has written us a little

7:14:027:14:05

Shelley the Tortoise poem. If I open it up, one line is,

7:14:057:14:08

"Shelley loves being with the BP Crew

7:14:087:14:10

"As there's always so much she can do."

7:14:107:14:12

Sophie, we love it. You're a genius. Thank you.

7:14:127:14:15

I also love what Ava from West Sussex has made. Look at this!

7:14:157:14:18

This me at the World Gymnastics Championships, doing a handstand,

7:14:187:14:21

with a big smile on my face. Why? Because I now love gymnastics.

7:14:217:14:25

-Ava, thank you so much.

-That was my favourite of your challenges.

7:14:257:14:28

-Really?

-Clemmy, who is 12, has sent this brilliant one in.

7:14:287:14:31

Have a look. It is little Barney, with his glasses on and his beard.

7:14:317:14:34

I love that. Holding his drone. It says, "Blink and you might miss it!"

7:14:347:14:38

-They were SO fast, these drones.

-Unbelievably quick.

-Amazing.

7:14:387:14:41

Thank you to every single one of you who made a piece of art that is on

7:14:417:14:45

this board here and to anyone who sent in post. Keep them coming in,

7:14:457:14:48

-with regards to the Christmas cards.

-If you do send something in,

7:14:487:14:51

remember, we need your full name, your address and we need your

7:14:517:14:54

date of birth. Otherwise, we can't give you a BP badge -

7:14:547:14:57

and you definitely want one. If you are between 6 and 15,

7:14:577:15:00

you can get your hands on one, because it is all about the badge.

7:15:007:15:03

It is also all about the Blue Peter website.

7:15:037:15:06

There is loads going on there. We have got the Blue Peter fan club,

7:15:067:15:09

which happens twice a week, on a Tuesday and on a Sunday.

7:15:097:15:11

There is also an exclusive clip, including a drawing made by

7:15:117:15:14

a Hollywood director, the man behind The Good Dinosaur,

7:15:147:15:18

who has drawn this picture of a dinosaur, with bits on it sent in

7:15:187:15:22

by you guys. So, well done for that. Jump online if you want to see that.

7:15:227:15:25

However, now it is time for me to refine my climbing skills,

7:15:257:15:28

to experience sea survival, because I am about to enter

7:15:287:15:32

one of THE most extreme working environments anywhere. Help.

7:15:327:15:37

There are over 6,000 wind turbines

7:15:407:15:42

in the UK, which help generate power for our homes.

7:15:427:15:46

But how much do we actually know about wind energy?

7:15:467:15:49

Well, to answer that, I will be going to the top of a turbine

7:15:497:15:52

in the sea, to find out how man can harness the power of the wind.

7:15:527:15:56

But before I can go near 130 metres of turbine, I need to undergo

7:15:587:16:05

some serious training.

7:16:057:16:07

I have come to this training centre, where you can learn

7:16:077:16:10

some of the skills you need for some of the most extreme

7:16:107:16:13

working environments in the world.

7:16:137:16:15

Because an emergency could occur while I am at sea or working

7:16:167:16:20

at heights, I need to prepare for the worst.

7:16:207:16:22

So, I will be taking on four stages of tough turbine training.

7:16:227:16:27

Stage one...

7:16:287:16:31

'OK, so I am in a pool. It is actually quite relaxing.

7:16:317:16:35

'All under the watchful gaze of Ken, my gentle sea survival instructor.'

7:16:357:16:40

Come on! Come on! Push it out! Come on!

7:16:407:16:43

Keep on going! Come on!

7:16:437:16:45

Come on, lads!

7:16:457:16:46

I have done a lot of courses in the army and, mainly, I find that

7:16:487:16:52

motivation is my biggest asset.

7:16:527:16:54

It's imminent!

7:16:547:16:55

'Sea survival just got serious. and the next part is even tougher.'

7:16:577:17:01

Because work on a wind turbine can be truly dangerous,

7:17:017:17:04

you don't know how or when you will have to get off that wind turbine.

7:17:047:17:08

So, if the worst comes to the worst, you might have to do what I am about

7:17:087:17:11

to do now, which is step off.

7:17:117:17:13

Look straight ahead. Step off.

7:17:137:17:16

'And Ken's punishing training just kept on coming!'

7:17:187:17:22

Come on! Push it out!

7:17:227:17:23

Come on! That fire is coming at you here!

7:17:237:17:25

Come on! Move it!

7:17:257:17:27

Come on, lads, push it out!

7:17:287:17:30

Stage two...

7:17:417:17:43

'If we need to jump into the sea, a life raft would be deployed.

7:17:457:17:48

'I need to be able to climb on top of it and flip it over,

7:17:487:17:51

'using just my own body weight.'

7:17:517:17:55

'Here goes.'

7:17:557:17:56

'Whoa! I did it!'

7:17:597:18:00

At sea, speed is vital to our survival, as we would be facing

7:18:027:18:04

freezing water temperatures.

7:18:047:18:07

'With the raft the right way up, the team and I need to get inside

7:18:077:18:10

'as quickly as possible.'

7:18:107:18:12

That was 50 seconds!

7:18:127:18:15

'Nice work, guys.'

7:18:157:18:17

Stage three...

7:18:187:18:21

'The most dangerous part of my adventure is transferring

7:18:227:18:25

'from the boat to the turbine.'

7:18:257:18:27

All that's between me and the sea is a steep - and I mean steep - ladder.

7:18:277:18:32

And so to help me get to grips with the climb

7:18:327:18:34

is Michael, my instructor.

7:18:347:18:36

Well, Michael, I am kitted out, ready and raring to go.

7:18:367:18:39

What exactly have I got on here?

7:18:397:18:41

First of all, you have your harness, to keep you safe.

7:18:417:18:43

And then you have your lanyards, two of them.

7:18:437:18:46

-What they'll do is catch you if you do fall.

-Very important.

7:18:467:18:50

With my harness in place, I attempt my first climb. But there are rules.

7:18:507:18:56

I have to keep three points of my body in constant contact with

7:18:567:18:59

-the ladder...

-Good.

-..as well as one of my hooks.

7:18:597:19:02

On top of this, my hook should be placed three rungs above me

7:19:047:19:07

on the ladder, and this takes practice.

7:19:077:19:10

That's done, that's done, now take off the...

7:19:127:19:15

-No, the rope!

-Great.

7:19:157:19:19

Tell you what, there's a lot to remember.

7:19:217:19:23

It is one thing doing it in here, a warm, comfortable environment,

7:19:237:19:27

-but actually, if it matters, would you panic?

-That's what this is for.

7:19:277:19:31

No panicking.

7:19:317:19:33

Stage four, the controlled descent.

7:19:347:19:37

In order to complete my training, I need to test my

7:19:387:19:41

head for heights as I'm lowered down this massive tower.

7:19:417:19:44

I am now 30 metres above the ground on a training tower.

7:19:467:19:49

Basically, this is going to simulate what would happen

7:19:497:19:52

if something were to go wrong on the actual wind turbine

7:19:527:19:55

and I would need to evacuate.

7:19:557:19:57

So for now, it's time for me to let go of this rope,

7:19:577:19:59

keep my fingers crossed and say, "Mum, I'm flying!"

7:19:597:20:03

Yes! Whoohoo!

7:20:037:20:06

Oh, yeah! Mum, I can fly!

7:20:087:20:11

Yeah.

7:20:117:20:13

There's a leap of faith at the very top

7:20:197:20:22

when you think, "I'm trusting the rope. All I've got is this rope."

7:20:227:20:26

And then you just enjoy it and you float down.

7:20:267:20:28

You feel like a superhero. I like training for the wind turbine.

7:20:287:20:31

Bring on the real thing.

7:20:317:20:34

Don't miss next week,

7:20:347:20:35

when I take you to one of the most extreme working environments

7:20:357:20:38

I have ever seen, and put my training to the test.

7:20:387:20:42

There are some really cool jobs,

7:20:457:20:47

and working on a wind turbine is one of them.

7:20:477:20:50

Now, though, from wind to rain.

7:20:507:20:53

It's time to welcome back to Blue Peter Mr Greg Foot!

7:20:537:20:57

APPLAUSE AND CHEERING

7:20:577:20:59

It's Greg. What have you got for us today? I'm so excited.

7:20:597:21:02

Right, I want to bring the weather from outdoors indoors. OK.

7:21:027:21:06

I want to make cloud and rain right here in the Blue Peter studio.

7:21:067:21:09

I definitely want to see that as well. What's this?

7:21:097:21:11

Let's start with the cloud. So I'm going to make you a little cloud

7:21:117:21:14

and then we're going to super-size it. First of all, question for you.

7:21:147:21:17

-What is a cloud made of?

-Easy, water.

-Good man. Yeah, water.

7:21:177:21:21

But the real question is how does that water clump together

7:21:217:21:24

into a cloud and how does it stay up there?

7:21:247:21:26

So all around us is air,

7:21:267:21:27

and that's made of a whole bunch of different gases.

7:21:277:21:29

You've got oxygen that you breathe in.

7:21:297:21:31

You've got carbon dioxide that you breathe out.

7:21:317:21:33

A whole host of others, including water, but as a gas.

7:21:337:21:36

-We call it water vapour.

-OK.

7:21:367:21:38

Now, as all that gas rises, that water vapour rises,

7:21:387:21:40

it cools down as it gets to the top of the atmosphere.

7:21:407:21:43

And when it cools down enough, it can turn from a gas to a liquid.

7:21:437:21:47

If you think about when you breathe on a really cold window, like that.

7:21:477:21:50

-Oh, condensation?

-Yeah. So the water vapour,

7:21:507:21:52

the gas in your breath, cools down into little droplets that you see.

7:21:527:21:55

It is called condensation. That's all a cloud is.

7:21:557:21:58

-Just condensed water vapour. Now, can you start pumping?

-Absolutely.

7:21:587:22:01

Some eye protection for you first.

7:22:017:22:03

-Remember, safety never takes a day off on Blue Peter.

-True that.

7:22:037:22:06

Right, 15 pumps, please. So what you're doing right now is

7:22:067:22:09

you're pumping air into the bottle.

7:22:097:22:11

And the air has got water vapour.

7:22:117:22:12

I will put a little bit of water in there as well.

7:22:127:22:14

So you're building up the pressure.

7:22:147:22:16

When the pressure is enough, I'm going to pop the top off.

7:22:167:22:18

The pressure is going to decrease, which actually cools

7:22:187:22:20

the whole thing down. So it's going to be like

7:22:207:22:22

what happens up in the atmosphere. It cools it down and hopefully,

7:22:227:22:25

we'll get a cloud. So it needs to actually have something to

7:22:257:22:28

grip hold of. Those water droplets need to grip onto something.

7:22:287:22:31

Up there in the sky, it could be salt from the sea,

7:22:317:22:34

it could be dust, it could be soot from a wildfire.

7:22:347:22:36

-I put a little bit of soot in here. Are you ready?

-Yes, I am.

7:22:367:22:40

Three, two, one!

7:22:407:22:42

-Yes!

-Yeah!

-See that cloud in there?

7:22:427:22:45

There's a cloud in the bottle.

7:22:457:22:46

There is probably millions of tiny little water droplets

7:22:467:22:49

-in there to make our cloud.

-That's crazy.

7:22:497:22:51

So I'm going to make a much bigger version of that to fill

7:22:517:22:54

the whole studio afterwards.

7:22:547:22:56

-The question, I guess, is how it actually stays up there.

-Yeah...

7:22:567:22:59

And it's because the droplets are so, so tiny.

7:22:597:23:02

They're surrounded by air,

7:23:027:23:03

they're light enough to float up there.

7:23:037:23:05

But once they start banging together and the cloud grows,

7:23:057:23:08

the droplets get so big that they can start to fall.

7:23:087:23:10

-And that of course is...

-Rain.

-Rain.

7:23:107:23:12

Question for you, Radzi from Blue Peter. What shape is a raindrop?

7:23:127:23:16

-That's easy. It's like a teardrop, so it looks a bit like that.

-Uh-uh!

7:23:167:23:20

I'm going to show you. Right, this is a raindrop levitation device.

7:23:207:23:24

-Yes!

-You're going to love this.

7:23:247:23:26

We obviously can't skydive next to a raindrop to see its shape.

7:23:267:23:30

So what this is going to do is air is going to rush up

7:23:307:23:32

and I'm going to try to keep a raindrop in place,

7:23:327:23:34

so the air is going to be rushing around it.

7:23:347:23:36

-It's the same as what happens as it falls.

-Wow.

7:23:367:23:38

-So, let's give this a go. My air is on.

-Yeah.

7:23:387:23:41

Now what I'm going to try to do is put a raindrop in there.

7:23:417:23:45

More air! There we go, there we go!

7:23:457:23:50

-Oh!

-Now, that's not bad.

7:23:507:23:52

-Very hard to do live.

-Absolutely.

7:23:527:23:55

-So I filmed it in slow motion earlier in the rehearsal.

-Amazing!

7:23:557:23:58

Have a look and tell me what the shape is. Watch this.

7:23:587:24:00

This is amazing. Watch.

7:24:007:24:02

-Out it comes.

-It's flat!

-Yes.

7:24:027:24:05

-It's really flat.

-Look underneath. How gorgeous is that?

7:24:057:24:10

This, Radz, is my favourite fact.

7:24:107:24:14

You'd think a raindrop is round. Spherical, like a ball.

7:24:147:24:17

When they are really, really small, they are that shape.

7:24:177:24:19

But when they get bigger, they fall,

7:24:197:24:21

and they fall fast, like 15-20 miles per hour.

7:24:217:24:24

They're falling and all that air is hitting them underneath.

7:24:247:24:27

And it squashes the bottom of the raindrop

7:24:277:24:28

and you get that beautiful burger bun shape.

7:24:287:24:31

Why you said teardrop is you always see it running down a window.

7:24:317:24:34

Or dripping out of the tap.

7:24:347:24:36

What that does is it pulls some of it behind it

7:24:367:24:38

and it kind of creates this tail. There you go.

7:24:387:24:41

-There you go. Is it all a big myth?

-Yeah.

7:24:417:24:43

Now, Greg, I hate to hurry you but I want to see the big one!

7:24:437:24:45

Let's do it. Come over here, my friend.

7:24:457:24:47

Right, what you're going to need is to put on this poncho.

7:24:477:24:50

Because this could get a little bit damp.

7:24:507:24:52

Remember, a cloud is just trillions of drops of water vapour

7:24:527:24:55

-that have condensed, that have cooled down into water droplets.

-OK.

7:24:557:24:59

So, Tom, can you bring all my ingredients for a cloud, please?

7:24:597:25:02

-Tom, come out, my friend.

-Thanks, Tom.

-What's in this?

7:25:027:25:05

In this is everything you need to make a cloud. Thanks, buddy.

7:25:057:25:08

So what we're going to do is we have made ourselves nice and safe.

7:25:087:25:12

Now, we need something very, very cold, because when it's up there

7:25:127:25:15

in the cloud, that's what causes the cloud to condense, to cool down.

7:25:157:25:19

So what I've got here is liquid nitrogen.

7:25:197:25:22

Whilst you're doing that, I do have to say, please,

7:25:227:25:24

for goodness' sake, do not try this at home. That's why we've got masks.

7:25:247:25:28

-Greg knows exactly what he's doing.

-We've got some liquid nitrogen.

7:25:287:25:32

Now I've also got some hot water.

7:25:327:25:34

The hot water is going to go into my liquid nitrogen.

7:25:347:25:36

It's going to turn it from a liquid into a gas.

7:25:367:25:38

Cold gas up in the air, that's going to cool down the water vapour

7:25:387:25:41

-in the sky and hopefully make a cloud.

-I want to see this!

7:25:417:25:44

-Are we ready for this? Everyone on the floor happy?

-Yeah!

7:25:447:25:47

OK, so in three, two, one!

7:25:477:25:50

ALL: Whoa! Wahey!

7:25:527:25:55

-That is amazing. We've just made a cloud on Blue Peter, Mum.

-Yeah!

7:25:557:25:59

Can we see that again? That's it in slow motion. Look at that!

7:25:597:26:02

-Oh, that looks good.

-That's nice!

-There it is. Our cloud.

7:26:027:26:07

All those water droplets in the air. Yes!

7:26:077:26:09

Greg, I love when you come on, because we learn so much.

7:26:097:26:11

-But come over this way.

-This is the science I love!

7:26:117:26:14

Radzi absolutely loves this. At the start of the show,

7:26:147:26:16

we asked you lot at home to get in touch with us and let us know

7:26:167:26:19

if anything could rain out of the sky, what would it be and why?

7:26:197:26:23

-There you go, Radz. Oh, you're quite wet.

-I'm very wet. I'm in the cloud!

7:26:237:26:29

Navy Blue Pickle Star Fish - great name -

7:26:297:26:31

says it should rain massive, buttery crumpets. I like that.

7:26:317:26:35

Now, I like Gold Robo-Bluebell Star, because they say sweets,

7:26:357:26:39

dogs, cats, horses, unicorns, hamsters and crowns. You're not...

7:26:397:26:42

-You're hedging your bets. I love it.

-This is great.

7:26:427:26:44

Someone's gone for a food theme.

7:26:447:26:45

Indigo Singing Orca has gone for spaghetti bolognese

7:26:457:26:48

-and garlic bread.

-Such a good meal, though. Amethyst Vanilla...

7:26:487:26:52

I want to read you a really, really good one. This is for you.

7:26:527:26:55

Crimson Flute Canary says magical homework pens that just do

7:26:557:26:58

-all your homework for you.

-Genius.

-Love it. Love it.

7:26:587:27:03

Now, Clarice Cheeky Swan says, "I would make it rain computers

7:27:037:27:07

-"because I can use them when I'm not allowed." I like it.

-Cheeky.

7:27:077:27:13

Here's another animal one. Amethyst Vanilla Chicken

7:27:137:27:15

wants it to rain chimpanzees,

7:27:157:27:17

-orang-utans and gibbons.

-Big monkey fan. I like that.

7:27:177:27:20

I kind of agree with this one.

7:27:207:27:21

Lime Smiling Conker says, "I would make it..."

7:27:217:27:23

There's so much cloud over there still!

7:27:237:27:25

"I would make it rain dogs, as I really like dogs,

7:27:257:27:27

"and then I could have loads." I like that.

7:27:277:27:30

-Imagine loads of Iggies just coming out the sky.

-Pretty sweet.

7:27:307:27:34

Now, time for one more.

7:27:347:27:36

"I would rain genies."

7:27:367:27:38

So they have found a flaw in the question and exploited it.

7:27:387:27:41

-Good work.

-As you know, if you have been on the Blue Peter fanclub page,

7:27:417:27:44

we have been playing presenter bingo and the phrase today was,

7:27:447:27:47

"It's all about the badge."

7:27:477:27:48

And the person who got that was, I can reveal...

7:27:487:27:51

Quartz Brainy Kid.

7:27:517:27:54

So, Quartz Brainy Kid, well done to you. Good job.

7:27:547:27:57

That's all that we've got time for today,

7:27:577:27:59

but make sure that you are watching next week.

7:27:597:28:01

There is loads happening, including Nathan Sykes, who is going to be here

7:28:017:28:04

to perform his brand-new single, and trust me, it is a beautiful one.

7:28:047:28:08

Now, my training is done, but it's now time for me

7:28:087:28:11

to climb up a wind turbine and see just how it works.

7:28:117:28:14

Make sure you watch that.

7:28:147:28:15

And this is a bit of a tongue twister,

7:28:157:28:17

but we're looking at the amazing tech behind the puppet penguins

7:28:177:28:19

in Mr Popper's Penguin Musical.

7:28:197:28:22

Alliteration! Nailed it, boom!

7:28:227:28:24

-See you next week. Bye!

-Bye-bye!
