Coming up today, we've an amazing performance from Joe McElderry

It's a brand-new year, so I'm celebrating

with a brand-new challenge.

On today's show, I'm going to be walking on fire!

He's going to show that, this year, Blue Peter is going to be on fire.

Yeah. Quite literally, guys. As you can see, it's really cold outside.

That's why I'm wearing a coat and woolly hat. I'm slightly nervous.

You can probably hear a crackling noise. It leads to this question.

Who wants to see me walking across fire in my bare feet?

-CHEERING IN THE STUDIO

-OK. Thanks very much!

There it is, in all its glory. This just looks terrifying.

Karen, could you come in, please, hold my hand and give me a cuddle?

Aw. Bless.

The idea today is I'm going to walk across that in my bare feet.

Let's go back in time and work out

who thought it was a good idea to do this in the first place,

-and how long ago was that?

-You can take it back over 3,000 years.

In different continents around the world,

everyone will have a ceremony or ritual involving walking on fire,

be it a test of strength or courage,

or it could be going from childhood into adulthood.

So they'd walk across it to prove they were strong people.

-To prove they were strong.

-I don't think I'm that strong.

-I know you're that strong.

-Let's talk about temperature.

We're stood quite away from it and it's boiling.

That's because the temperatures are going to be about 660 Celsius

that you're walking on.

So a kettle is 100, boiling. That's six times as hot. OK. Fine.

Obvious question, how am I not going to burn my feet walking across that?

Science. And being in the right mental state

that you want to take that first step quickly, followed by others.

As you can feel the heat here, we love wood,

it's excellent as a source of heat. It radiates heat incredibly well.

It just doesn't conduct heat well.

So with a short contact time,

the brisk pace you'll be walking on that, keep moving, you'll be fab.

-You did talk me through this earlier on.

-But now we see the flames.

We've got what I need to have in my head sorted, my mental state.

But, most importantly, how brisk that walk is,

-how quick I walk across.

-Brisk walking pace.

Karen, for now, thank you very much.

One thing's for sure, by the time I've done this,

I am going to be totally toasty.

Do not try this at home, please.

Radzi, Lindsey, it's been nice knowing you!

-It's not often we see Barney nervous, is it?

-Yikes.

You can tell he's a little bit anxious.

That is going to start the year off so well.

Barns, what was your favourite moment of last year?

-My favourite moment?

-Yeah.

-Genuinely, my favourite moment was

when Radzi did his front flip at gymnastics.

I was with him in Glasgow, we drove down together in my camper van.

We had a brilliant time.

Radzi would call me during training and tell me how hard it was.

I know he put a lot of effort into getting it right.

When he finally did it, I was proud, like a big brother,

it was an amazing moment for me.

That film still makes me cry, Radz.

My favourite moment, it's tricky -

Iggy's birthday, or Trapeze Challenge. That was so fun.

-That was incredible.

-And I liked the outfit.

Mine was following in the footsteps of my hero, Martin Luther King,

doing the walk that changed the world. I will never forget that.

But it's not just about us, it's about you at home.

because there were so many brilliant challenges.

-is where Lindsey runs the marathon.

-It was so epic.

Every step I take now is a step closer to the end.

We've just got to keep going.

My favourite thing on Blue Peter this year was...

I only get one chance to get it right. It makes it so much harder.

-COMMENTATOR:

He went for the front somersault, and he's nailed it.

My favourite bit on Blue Peter was when Iggy did her training.

I thought that she was amazing.

Yay.

..is Lindsey's Trapeze Challenge because it was really funny.

You will be playing Joseph in The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,

the UK tour, what's that going to be like?

I'm really excited. I'm quite nervous and anxious,

but I'm also honoured. I think, once we start rehearsals next week,

once they get under way and I get into the swing of it,

it's going to be so much fun. Everybody loves this show,

and everyone I've spoken to is really excited about it.

When does it all kick off, when can we see it?

-Starts 26th January in Peterborough.

-You haven't got long!

-I know.

Then we go through till July, all the way round the country,

all across the UK, we're going to be going everywhere.

All over the UK. And you're joined by choirs in different locations.

Every week, for each weekly run we do in each town,

we have a different children's choir, which will be wonderful.

It will be great to have them put their different spins on it.

We'll meet loads of people who can be a part of the show,

and get the opportunity to perform in a West End show, it's amazing.

It is going to be great. For anyone who doesn't know the story,

which is not very many people, what's it all about?

I'll cut the story short.

It's about, Joseph has this coat. His brothers get very jealous.

There's lots of ups and downs along the way.

-It all works itself out in the end.

to meet hundreds of sports stars at one of the BBC's biggest events,

I couldn't say no, could I? Check this out.

The day has finally arrived.

We are here for BBC Sports Personality of the Year

and I'm just a teensy-weensy bit excited.

As you know, if you apply for the sport badge,

that puts you in with the chance of being a judge

on Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Out of over 7,500 applicants, we chose Sameena.

Young boxer Sameena earned her sport badge

for inspiring her friend to have a go at the sport.

Not only did her badge give her the chance to be on the judging panel

for Young Sports Personality Of The Year...

She looks very dedicated.

..she's also in Belfast for the main event.

'And I'm on my way to meet her.

'The set is huge! This is going to be an epic show.

'The rehearsals are under way.

'Sameena is helping out by standing in

'for some of the stars who'll be on the stage later on.

'Let's see how she found working with one of England's

'greatest-ever footballers.'

Sameena, in television, they have a very specific term

for what you just did. That's called "smashing it out of the park"!

It was pretty scary, a bit nerve-racking.

I didn't know what I was supposed to do. But I got on with it.

-What's it like being here?

-It's amazing to be here. It's an honour.

Did you have any idea you were going to be nominated?

No, I had no idea at all. There's been so many great athletes

who've had so many great performances this year.

The greatest of all time thinks you're the real deal.

-What does that mean to you?

-He's been a massive idol of mine

since I was a young child.

It is unthinkable to even get the recognition off someone like that.

The top three are really strong contenders.

So I'm just looking forward to the night, really.

My heart was beating a bit fast when they said my name.

Gymnastics is the most popular sport for all the Blue Peter viewers.

For any budding Ellies who one day wants to be as good as you,

-do you have any advice for them?

-Erm...

Gymnastics is an absolutely amazing sport.

The more young people we can get starting, the better.

I hope I'm inspiring a lot of children out there.

-You're doing exactly that. High five, well done. Amazing.

The fire's gone down a little bit.

It has burned down to that beautiful ember state.

At the sides, it is about 660 Celsius.

The centre we've raked out, it has gone down to about 300.

We still have that beautiful 20-foot barbecue for you, Barney.

Also, we're very green here on Blue Peter,

and we can use the embers afterwards and put them on the veg patch.

Now we're here, and I can feel that heat, it doesn't seem possible.
