on the show today so we thought we'd make a showbiz entrance.

Sadly, we couldn't manage that, but I have got a lift here.

these guys, baby rays, as they make their way to their new home.

But first, you're going to be glad it's not smell-o-vision today

cos for my latest Blue Peter adventure,

I went to the smelliest, pooiest part of the UK.

If you're eating your dinner right now, stop - you have been warned.

London - home to over eight million people and growing,

producing millions of tonnes of waste

that relies on a network of sewers built 150 years ago.

And they're struggling to keep up with all that poo.

Something had to be done so new super sewers like this one

are here to help take the extra waste away.

This is the newly built Lee Tunnel

and I'm one of the last people to come down here

before it starts being used.

At 80 metres below the surface, it's almost as deep as Big Ben is tall.

BIG BEN CHIMES

And it will be able to handle

more than 16 million tonnes of sewage every year -

that's a whole lot of poo!

And down here, there's only one way to travel - in style!

This is the deepest tunnel ever built in London

and it stretches four miles that way.

Go for it, Ian.

Whoo!

What's great is that it doesn't smell...yet. It will smell.

At the end of the tunnel is the pumping station

where the waste will get transported back to the surface to be treated.

It's also the place where you'll find Phil,

who helped construct the new sewer.

That's a long way up!

So, Phil, why is this new super-sewage system so important?

Why does it need to be here?

Well, in the 1850s when the Victorians built the sewage system,

there was only about two million people in London.

Now we're over eight million,

we need somewhere for our additional sewage to go.

Without the super-sewer,

that additional sewage would flow into the Thames.

And I guess that's what this pipe here does, isn't it?

Yeah, this pipe takes it from the tunnel,

all the way up to the top

to be treated in the sewage treatment works.

But it's Blue Peter so we love getting involved,

so is there anything that I can do to help on this massive project?

We've got a few more of these bolts to tighten up

so if we go over there,

-we can get to it.

-Great, let's do it!

'that transport the waste back to the surface.'

-So, I'm going to put the spanner on the bottom here.

-Yeah.

'Luckily for me,

'there's a special machine that does all the hard work.'

and the Lee Tunnel is almost ready to be opened.

I'm just really glad I got sent down a nice clean sewer

and I didn't have to go in a stinky Victorian one.

-Ahem!

-Wait, the film's not over yet, is it?

-I'm going to have to go in a smelly sewer, aren't I?

-Yeah.

Yep, that's certainly stinky.

And when I say stinky, I mean it.

It absolutely hums down here. Bleurgh!

This sewer runs beneath one of London's busiest areas

and it was designed 150 years ago by this man, Joseph Bazalgette -

nice tache, Baz! -

to take away the city's waste.

Before the sewer network was built, raw sewage went straight

into the streets and rivers,

spreading disease and making the city smell.

In 1858, it got so bad,

the era became known as the Great Stink of London. Pooh-wee!

But nowadays, along with the increased population,

there's another problem causing a strain on the sewers.

Because, lurking in the shadows, are fatbergs.

SHE SCREAMS

Mixed in with all this poo,

the fatbergs are huge lumps of congealed grease and oil,

combined with food and rubbish, that can be hundreds of metres long.

Yuck! And, today, I'm taking the fatbergs on.

Gary, it's good to meet you,

though I would have preferred not to meet you down a sewer.

What are we going to be doing today?

Today, we're going to be cleaning fat off the walls.

I've brought you a present as well so you can give me a hand doing it.

Brilliant - a pooey shovel!

-OK, so where do we start here?

-You just go down like that.

'I think I can manage that. There's just one small problem.'

Sorry, the smell is so bad.

-This is horrible!

Think of somewhere hot and nice. It totally goes out of your mind.

Here you go, look at that. What this is,

the fat is exactly the same on the walls on top of the flow.

Oh, that is so deep!

So, Gary, what should be down here?

Only three things should be down in this sewer

-and that's pee, paper and poo.

-The three Ps.

-That's it, nothing else?

-Nothing else.

-Anything else you put down your loo

or your sink ends up here.

Fatbergs also come at a price

because they cost water companies millions of pounds to get rid of.

That is what fatberg looks like and it absolutely stinks.

-Can I put it down?

-Yeah, put it down.

Do you know what, that was so smelly down there,

but, having seen what's down there, I now understand exactly why

new super-sewers like Lee Tunnel are needed.

Can I get out now?

Thankfully, the new sewer will soon be open

and will be sending millions of tonnes of waste

to this treatment works to be filtered.

After the sewage is treated,

it ends up here where it re-enters the River Thames as clean water.

I can smell something really pooey.

I think it's me.

See? We told you not to eat your dinner.

but that's not true apparently, as I found out a few weeks ago.

Hi... So, here we are at...

Sorry. Here I am at the Sea Life Centre in Blackpool,

swimming with some of the most amazing marine life in the world.

OK, well, I'm not swimming with them because...

Well, the water's too cold.

I'm here on a very special mission that involves these creatures - rays.

There are very 500 different species of them in our oceans

and rivers and their closest relative is the shark.

What?! Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop the shoot.

-This body isn't on the menu for a shark.

-Erm... Read this.

Thanks.

Oh, it says that rays evolved from sharks 150 million years ago

so technically they're not sharks any more.

It also says to stop being a scaredy cat.

I wasn't.

Moving on... I've come to find out about the undulant ray,

a species that can be found just off the coast of the UK.

However, these amazing creatures are under threat

from overfishing in the sea, and are now considered endangered.

That's why Scott and the team here are part of a breeding programme

to try and maintain the population of the rays in captivity.

How does the breeding programme actually work?

-How is it helping them?

-It helps us

because we're not actually taking any animals out of the wild.

We're growing them and breeding them in the centres and the aquariums.

It's all about information and getting as much intel as we can on

how the rays breed, when they might breed, the best conditions for them

and then we can maybe look at reintroducing them.

You mean actually release them back into the wild again?

Potentially in the future, once generations have been grown

and make sure that everything's healthy.

It's all about getting this information together so that

that is a possibility.

The centre also hopes the breeding programme will raise awareness

of the issues these animals face.

Well, I'm here to help today, so what can I do?

What we need to do today is pop in the tank

-and collect some of their eggs.

-Just a normal day!

Just going to pop into a tank and collect some undulate ray eggs.

Are you coming?

The eggs are the first stage of the breeding programme

and are found at the bottom of this tank.

It's a very cold tank, by the way.

Oh, it's in my underpants.

Undulate rays have a special way of producing their young.

They grow a protective case known as a mermaid's purse around the egg,

which they would usually lay at the bottom of the ocean.

Not every mermaid's purse contains an egg, so it's time to get checking.

-What about that one?

-OK, this looks like a good one.

You can see it's a little bit chunkier. It's a really good colour.

So what you can do is hold it up to the light like this.

You see in there?

-Yeah.

-That's the yolk.

-There you go.

-So he goes into the bucket?

Yeah, we'll pop it in the bucket

and we'll keep him in a tank for nine months.

After that, we've got a perfect little baby ray.

The breeding programme is happening

in the company's aquariums all over the UK and today,

the team here are expecting some new arrivals -

two young male undulate rays

that they hope will mate with a female in the future.

They're coming all the way from London

which is five hours by car, or...

..just a click of your fingers.

Whoa!

And the magic of telly! That was amazing.

So much easier than driving.

Now that I'm in London,

it's time to meet the new rays heading to Blackpool.

Before they begin their journey,

they're checked over to make sure they're healthy enough for the ride.

And that's where John comes in.

These are some new juveniles that were born here at London Aquarium.

They're about four months old.

Why do you wait until they're four months old?

-Are they just too young to travel before then?

-Yeah.

What we have to do when they're born

is make sure that they're healthy, they're happy.

We have to actually allow them to start feeding on their own,

make sure they're ready for the journey.

All that's left to do now is transport them

out of their tank and into a waiting car.

And Scott's along for the ride to keep an eye on them.

The baby rays are now loaded into the back of the car

and the next time we see them, they'll be in Blackpool.

There's only so much time the rays can be out of their tank

so there's no hotel stop for these guys tonight.

Five hours later and the London team arrive in Blackpool

and the lights are on full show.

-The journey was great.

-Amazing.

-How are our babies?

-Fantastic. They've done really well.

-Oh, amazing. Right, shall we get them into their new home?

-Yeah.

The aquarium is empty,

a nice and quiet environment for the rays to settle in for their new home.

So this is it, everybody, this is the moment today has been about.

It's not the easiest thing, to get a baby ray out of a bag, is it?

Well, he settled in pretty quick.

Beautiful job, Scott. There we go. Baby number two.

Well, boys, I hope you enjoy your new home.

The rays will stay in this tank for about five months

until they're big enough to be moved

and the breeding programme can start all over again.

This is so much more than just finding a new home

for two baby rays, it's about the bigger picture.

It's about this incredible breeding project which makes sure

that these magnificent creatures have the brightest future possible.

So what I think we should do, right, is take this door out,

turn it into an aquarium and have our own Blue Peter baby ray as a pet.
