And friends!

0:00:350:00:37

Look at that cloud, Melody, it's going to rain soon.

0:00:400:00:43

-I love playing in the rain, Mummy.

-Well, maybe not today.

0:00:430:00:46

-We've got a friend to meet. Come on.

-OK, let's go!

0:00:460:00:50

'My friend studies at this school! It's a great place to visit.'

MARIMBA MUSIC PLAYS

0:01:010:01:05

-Oh, Melody. What can you hear? It's a marimba.

-Marimba! Let's go!

MARIMBA MUSIC PLAYS

0:01:130:01:16

-Hey, hello, Joe.

-Hello.

-Hi, Joe.

0:01:160:01:18

-That was amazing, we could hear you outside.

-Thank you very much.

0:01:180:01:23

'My friend's name is Joe. He plays a marimba.

0:01:230:01:26

'It's a funny word - ma-rim-ba!

0:01:260:01:28

MELODY LAUGHS

0:01:280:01:29

'I can't wait to learn all about it!'

0:01:290:01:32

You play it with these, one of these, which is a mallet.

0:01:330:01:39

'I feel one of the mallets. It has soft hair on the top of it.'

0:01:390:01:42

..kind of woolly, isn't it?

0:01:420:01:44

Depending on what the head is wrapped in,

0:01:440:01:47

it makes a softer or louder sound.

0:01:470:01:49

So, this one is actually quite a soft mallet. So, when you play it...

0:01:490:01:54

-Quite a gentle sound.

-Lovely.

0:01:550:01:57

These are wrapped in yarn, so they make a medium sound...

0:01:570:02:01

-Very good.

-You can even play it with really harsh, rubber mallets.

0:02:040:02:09

And it's best to play it slightly further up the instrument,

0:02:090:02:13

-because otherwise it gets a little too harsh...

-Oh, yes.

0:02:130:02:16

HE PLAYS NOTES

0:02:160:02:18

-Sounds a bit like a xylophone.

-Can you hear the difference?

0:02:180:02:22

What have we got down here? Can you feel

0:02:220:02:24

-what we've got there?

-These are resonators.

-Yeah.

0:02:240:02:27

When you strike the key, these amplify the sound

0:02:270:02:30

so it carries across the whole room.

0:02:300:02:32

Why do you think there's holes?

0:02:320:02:34

-To make the sound come out.

-So the sound can travel through.

0:02:340:02:38

-You have to hit in the middle?

-Yes.

0:02:380:02:40

-On the end it doesn't sound as good?

-If you hit it on the end...

0:02:400:02:44

'It doesn't sound good when you hit like that.'

0:02:440:02:46

Hit it in the middle, however...

0:02:460:02:49

-Can you hear the difference?

-Yeah. 'That sounds much better, Joe.'

0:02:490:02:53

..which is really great.

0:02:530:02:55

-Would you like to have a go?

-Yes, please!

-Yes!

0:02:550:02:58

-It'll be amazing.

-I'll take Fudge, there we go, thank you.

-Here you go.

0:02:580:03:02

'Wow! Joe lets me have a go. This is great fun.

0:03:020:03:05

-'I love all the different sounds a marimba can make.'

-Try and hit it...

0:03:050:03:10

-In the middle.

-Yeah.

-Whoa!

-There you go.

-Boomy.

0:03:100:03:13

Can you make a quiet sound?

0:03:130:03:15

Goes all the way down there, right the way up to the top! Whoa!

0:03:150:03:19

-MUM LAUGHS

-Joe, could you play something for us?

0:03:190:03:22

Yes, of course...

0:03:220:03:24

-'Wow! Joe sounds amazing!'

-Aw, Melody, that was brilliant.

0:03:430:03:47

We've got to let Joe get ready while we find our friends.

0:03:470:03:50

'Mum tells him we have to go, and we will see him soon,

0:03:500:03:54

'at the performance.

0:03:540:03:56

'My friends are here to listen to the music with me!

0:03:560:03:59

'I can't wait to hear what they imagine!'

0:03:590:04:02

-ALL:

-Hello, Melody!

0:04:020:04:04

Are you excited to listen to the music?

0:04:040:04:07

-ALL:

-Yes.

0:04:070:04:08

I wonder what it'll make you think of!

0:04:080:04:11

'The show is about to begin! Fudge and I are so excited!'

0:04:120:04:17

Hello.

0:04:180:04:19

I'm going to play Two Movements For Marimba, by Toshimitsu Tanaka.

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:04:340:04:37

'Wow! The marimba sounds so cool!

0:04:450:04:49

'Joe is playing with two mallets in each hand!

0:04:490:04:52

'He must have had lots of practice.

0:04:520:04:56

'And practice makes perfect! 'Isn't that right, Fudge?'

0:04:560:05:00

Meow.

0:05:000:05:02

'I start to use my imagination.'

0:05:070:05:11

It's raining.

-I can see Fudge!

0:05:260:05:28

And that's me!

0:05:290:05:31

We're in a field, playing in the rain.

0:05:310:05:34

It's fun to splash in the puddles.

0:05:340:05:36

WATER SPLASHES

0:05:360:05:38

Oh, no! Sorry, fudge!

0:05:380:05:40

-Meow!

-MELODY LAUGHS

0:05:400:05:42

The sky's gone dark!

0:05:510:05:53

All this rain is making the puddles get bigger and bigger.

0:06:030:06:08

You better let me carry you, Fudge. The valley is filling up fast!

0:06:080:06:12

-I know!

-Meow!

-Let's head for the hills, Fudge!

0:06:200:06:24

Phew! We made it safely up the hill! Look what the rain water did, Fudge.

0:06:290:06:35

It's made a big lake.

0:06:350:06:36

Joe has finished the first part. I wonder what I'll imagine next.

0:06:380:06:43

This part sounds very different.

0:07:060:07:09

We're under the water! It's so blue and clear!

0:07:320:07:36

Fudge and I are dressed in diving gear.

0:07:360:07:39

WHALE SONG

0:07:390:07:41

Look, Fudge, it's a whale. Isn't he beautiful?

0:07:410:07:45

WHALE SONG

0:07:490:07:51

He wants to give us a ride. Of course, Mr Whale!

0:07:510:07:56

We're having a WHALE of a time!

0:07:560:07:59

SHE LAUGHS

0:07:590:08:01

WHALE SONG

0:08:010:08:03

Woohoo!

0:08:070:08:09

WATER SPLASHES

0:08:130:08:14

MELODY LAUGHS

0:08:140:08:16

Thank you for the ride, Mr Whale.

0:08:160:08:18

APPLAUSE

0:08:200:08:21

The music was so good. Joe played really well.

0:08:210:08:26

Take a bow, Joe! You deserve it!

0:08:260:08:29

After the performance, Mummy, Fudge and I go to meet our friends.

0:08:330:08:39

I can't wait to hear what the music makes them think of.

0:08:390:08:42

-Hello.

-ALL:

-Hello.

-How are you?

-Good.

0:08:420:08:46

-Did you enjoy listening to Joe play the marimba?

-ALL:

-Yes.

0:08:460:08:49

-Would you like to listen again?

-ALL:

-Yes.

0:08:490:08:52

This time we'll see what your imagination makes you think of.

0:08:520:08:56

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:08:560:09:00

It made me think of somebody kicking a log and rolling on it.

0:09:020:09:07

MELODY LAUGHS Fun idea, Lilly!

0:09:070:09:09

Someone in a laboratory making a robot

0:09:090:09:13

but there are loads of buttons,

0:09:130:09:15

so he couldn't do it that quickly.

0:09:150:09:17

BUTTON BEEPS

0:09:190:09:21

I could definitely see those things you saw.

0:09:220:09:25

That was brilliant, well done!

0:09:250:09:27

Shall we listen to the next piece,

0:09:270:09:29

and see if we can see something different?

0:09:290:09:31

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:09:310:09:35

'Sometimes it's good to close your eyes when you listen to the music.

0:09:380:09:42

'It can help you to imagine.'

0:09:420:09:44

So this time, Maggie, could you see anything in your imagination?

0:09:480:09:52

There were, like, some mice running around on, like, some floor.

0:09:520:09:57

Wow! And were they running really quickly?

0:09:570:10:00

Well, they went out to go get... To go so they can get some cheese,

0:10:000:10:07

-and then they went back to their holes.

-That's brilliant.

0:10:070:10:11

'Mice. Oh, good thinking, Maggie!'

0:10:110:10:14

That's a really good idea, well done. So what about you, Jack?

0:10:140:10:17

Mice sneaking around trying to get the cheese.

0:10:170:10:22

What is it about the music that made us all think about mice?

0:10:220:10:25

It was because it was like a scampering around.

0:10:250:10:28

Shall we listen again and see if we can see what you saw

0:10:280:10:32

in your imagination?

0:10:320:10:33

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:10:330:10:38

MOUSE SQUEAKS

0:10:380:10:41

MICE SQUEAK

0:10:410:10:42

MICE SQUEAK

0:10:450:10:46

-Did you hear the mice? Shall we listen to the next section?

-Yes.

0:10:510:10:55

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:10:550:10:59

I saw a snorkeler swimming around in the ocean,

0:10:590:11:03

seeing lots of different sea creatures.

0:11:030:11:06

It made me think of someone going in to a house, and they thought

0:11:090:11:14

no-one was there, but there actually was loads of scary creatures hiding.

0:11:140:11:19

'Oh, I love those ideas!'

0:11:220:11:24

Right, that was wonderful, wasn't it?

0:11:240:11:27

-Shall we listen to the last piece?

-Yes.

-OK.

0:11:270:11:30

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:11:300:11:34

Whoa, that was really different at the end, wasn't it?

0:11:460:11:49

So, what did we see this time?

0:11:490:11:52

I saw people walking in the spooky wood,

0:11:520:11:56

-then suddenly something jumped out on...at them.

-Really?

0:11:560:12:01

That's brilliant. What did you see in the spooky wood? What jumped out?

0:12:010:12:05

A herd of bats!

0:12:050:12:07

Do you think they've come from Harry's house and flown into

0:12:070:12:11

your wood? Very spooky, that's a lovely idea.

0:12:110:12:14

So, Jack, what did you see in your imagination?

0:12:140:12:17

Loads of balloons just flying up and up and up,

0:12:170:12:20

and they weren't stopping.

0:12:200:12:21

It made me think, like, balloons, too.

0:12:210:12:24

And then when it had the big bit at the end,

0:12:240:12:27

-they all popped on a cactus in the desert.

-On a cactus, wow.

0:12:270:12:31

Just like Jack's, so that's amazing.

0:12:310:12:33

Well, shall we have a listen and see if we can hear all your ideas in it?

0:12:330:12:37

MUSIC: Two Movements For Marimba by Toshimitsu Tanaka

0:12:370:12:41

Mixing all our ideas together is so much fun.

0:12:410:12:45

LILLY LAUGHS

0:12:450:12:46

POP! POP!

0:12:500:12:52

POP-POP-POP-POP!

0:12:520:12:53

Wow! What a load of lovely ideas. Thank you, we loved them all.

0:12:540:12:58

-We've got to go now, but thank you and bye-bye.

-ALL:

-Bye!

0:12:580:13:01

-Don't forget to keep using your imagination.

-Bye!

0:13:010:13:05

-ALL:

-Bye!

0:13:050:13:06

-Shall we have a little sit down here?

-Yes, please.

0:13:080:13:11

There we go. Pop Fudge down.

0:13:110:13:14

So, what did you think of the other children's ideas then, Melody?

0:13:140:13:18

I liked them all, but I really liked when Harry imagined a robot.

0:13:180:13:22

Oh, yeah, do you remember?

0:13:220:13:24

THEY MIMIC A ROBOT

0:13:240:13:26

The same piece of music can mean lots of

0:13:260:13:29

different things to different people.

0:13:290:13:31

-Mummy, can we listen to the music again, please?

-Course you can.

0:13:310:13:35

-There you go.

-That music made me think of swimming with a whale.

0:13:380:13:43

What did it make you think of?
