Hello, I'm Jenny, live with all the top stories

0:00:050:00:09

from around the world this Tuesday. Keep watching.

0:00:090:00:12

The short list for footie honour, the Ballon d'Or is announced.

0:00:120:00:16

And, find out what this Star Wars super fan is making.

0:00:160:00:23

The attacks that took place in Paris, on Friday November 13th,

0:00:290:00:33

shocked the world.

0:00:330:00:37

The people that claimed responsibility for these acts, call

0:00:370:00:41

themselves Islamic State, or IS. But who are they?

0:00:410:00:44

And what can, and should, the world do to stop them?

0:00:440:00:46

That's the question now being asked here in the UK.

0:00:460:00:50

IS are a group based in the Middle East, mainly in Iraq and Syria,

0:00:500:00:53

who have extreme religious beliefs.

0:00:530:00:56

They use brutal violence against anyone who doesn't agree

0:00:560:00:59

with their views.

0:00:590:01:02

They claim to follow the religion of Islam, but many people say their

0:01:020:01:05

beliefs of hatred and violence have little to do with Islam and what

0:01:050:01:08

the majority of Muslims believe.

0:01:080:01:10

Since early 2014, IS has grown quickly - using

0:01:100:01:14

the internet and social media to recruit followers and spread fear.

0:01:140:01:19

They have been able to take over large parts of Syria

0:01:190:01:22

and neighbouring Iraq, declaring this their own state -

0:01:220:01:25

and punishing anyone who doesn't follow their strict rules.

0:01:250:01:30

Lots of different groups are fighting in Syria, and nations

0:01:300:01:33

around the world can't agree on who they want to control the country.

0:01:330:01:38

What does unite most of the world is the desire to stop IS because

0:01:380:01:42

of how violent their methods are.

0:01:420:01:46

The UK has bombed Islamic State-controlled areas in

0:01:460:01:50

Iraq but two years ago politicians voted against bombing in Syria.

0:01:500:01:55

However, since IS have started attacking places around the world -

0:01:550:01:58

like Paris - there is more pressure on the UK to stop them.

0:01:580:02:04

Prime Minister David Cameron wants MPs to vote to decide

0:02:040:02:07

whether or not the UK should start to bomb IS in Syria, and expects

0:02:070:02:11

this to happen very soon.

0:02:110:02:13

..is to address the threat we face

0:02:130:02:16

and to do so now.

0:02:160:02:19

Both France and the USA have already launched airstrikes in the country,

0:02:190:02:22

but some feel that the bombs also affect too many

0:02:220:02:24

innocent people living there, and that the UK shouldn't be involved.

0:02:240:02:28

There's much more on the Newsround website about what's happening

0:02:280:02:31

in Syria if you want to know more.

0:02:310:02:35

A thick haze of smog has covered cities across northern China.

0:02:350:02:38

Pollution levels are well above safe limits, so local authorities

0:02:380:02:41

have given out warnings.

0:02:410:02:44

The poisonous smog comes from coal burning in factories and homes.

0:02:440:02:46

The pollution is so bad that some factories have had

0:02:460:02:50

to stop work and heavy trucks have been banned from the roads.

0:02:500:02:54

Large parts of South Africa have been declared

0:02:540:02:56

drought disaster areas.

0:02:560:02:59

The water shortages across the country, which is in the peak of

0:02:590:03:02

summer, have been blamed on a lack of rain and an ongoing heat-wave.

0:03:020:03:05

The worst affected are farmers who have been unable to harvest crops,

0:03:050:03:08

or feed livestock.

0:03:080:03:11

South Africans have been told to save water.

0:03:110:03:15

The short list is for out for this year's

0:03:150:03:17

BBC Sports Personality Of The Year.

0:03:170:03:20

There are 12 contenders for the top prize, including Jessica

0:03:200:03:22

Ennis-Hill, Mo Farah, Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and Chris Froome.

0:03:220:03:26

The full list is on our website.

0:03:260:03:30

The world's best footballers are also hoping to get their hands on

0:03:300:03:33

Fifa's famous Ballon D'Or trophy.

0:03:330:03:35

There are just three players to choose from - Brazilian Neymar,

0:03:350:03:38

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

0:03:380:03:41

The winner will be announced in January.

0:03:410:03:49

It's December 1st today so for many

0:03:490:03:52

of you that means you'll be opening day one of your advent calendar.

0:03:520:03:55

Here at Newsround we've made our own for

0:03:550:03:57

you guys to enjoy on our website.

0:03:570:03:59

We'll be finding out about your Christmas traditions each day

0:03:590:04:01

as we count down to the big day.

0:04:010:04:06

Hi, guys, my name is Yannis and I have a really cool tradition in

0:04:060:04:09

my family which is, I shout, it's Christmas, to wake everybody up and

0:04:090:04:14

then we go downstairs and eat...

0:04:140:04:19

Well, we smash eggs first and then we eat them together

0:04:190:04:23

which is a great tradition and then afterwards we open the presents.

0:04:230:04:30

We'd love to hear about your Christmas traditions - send your

0:04:300:04:32

videos into the Newsround website.

0:04:320:04:37

You might have seen Yoda, Luke Skywalker or even Darth Vader

0:04:370:04:40

fight with one of these before.

0:04:400:04:43

But this Star Wars fan has gone one step further.

0:04:430:04:46

Bob Cleggett, who lives in America, made these giant lightsabers

0:04:460:04:50

from cardboard tubes he found bought from his local DIY store.

0:04:500:04:53

Ah, the force is strong with that one.

0:04:530:04:56

That's all we've got time for now, but Newsround's back right here

0:04:560:04:59

at 8.15am with lots more. See you then.
