It's Naz here with Tuesday afternoon's Newsround.

:00:11.:00:13.

First up, countries around the world are meeting in South Africa

:00:14.:00:16.

to decide how to protect endangered animals like elephants.

:00:17.:00:20.

Welcome to Johannesburg, one the biggest cities in South Africa.

:00:21.:00:31.

Thousands of African elephants are being illegally killed

:00:32.:00:33.

I've been spending the last week learning about these

:00:34.:00:37.

I went to speak to school children who live close to nature reserves

:00:38.:00:47.

where elephants live to see what they think about elephants,

:00:48.:00:50.

what they feel about them being killed, and to answer your questions

:00:51.:00:54.

about living near to nature's giants.

:00:55.:00:58.

In Afrikaans, olifant means elephant.

:00:59.:01:01.

These children live in Hoedspruit in South Africa.

:01:02.:01:15.

Some classes are taken outside, a lot of their lessons involve

:01:16.:01:18.

learning about animals, and even their awards

:01:19.:01:19.

Their school is only 20 minutes away from nature reserves and loads

:01:20.:01:29.

of incredible animals, including elephants,

:01:30.:01:30.

It's not just the children here who are interested

:01:31.:01:38.

They are popular around the world, including at this school

:01:39.:01:43.

in the UK, who have even named their class after them.

:01:44.:01:50.

And they've got some big questions for the children living

:01:51.:01:54.

What's it like living near elephants?

:01:55.:01:57.

It's nice because you get to see them a lot and you get

:01:58.:01:59.

It's just very nice being around them and you can often hear them

:02:00.:02:04.

Well, it's actually quite cool unless they start to wreck

:02:05.:02:08.

What are the bad things about living around elephants?

:02:09.:02:15.

They often rip up the water pipes, and we have solar panels

:02:16.:02:18.

and they often like to stand on the solar panels.

:02:19.:02:20.

We had a school tour for my class and we were actually

:02:21.:02:23.

Luckily the bus was able to get away.

:02:24.:02:30.

I don't find that they're really bad because it's not their fault

:02:31.:02:33.

that they need food, they need water or want to defend

:02:34.:02:35.

themselves because they feel like you're threatening them.

:02:36.:02:39.

How do elephants show their feelings?

:02:40.:02:43.

It's noises and grumbling but also body language.

:02:44.:02:45.

When an elephant is angry or scared, its tail will go up like this.

:02:46.:02:51.

I'm sad and annoyed about elephants and how they are poached.

:02:52.:02:54.

Mainly disappointed that people would kill the animals for money.

:02:55.:03:04.

I just hate the fact they are getting poached,

:03:05.:03:06.

Poachers, all they really want are their tusks because they use it

:03:07.:03:13.

to make ivory and stuff so you are killing an endangered

:03:14.:03:15.

animal which is part of the big five for no reason.

:03:16.:03:19.

It makes me feel sad but angry at the same time.

:03:20.:03:23.

How would you feel if elephants died out?

:03:24.:03:29.

It would make me feel sad because in the future other people

:03:30.:03:32.

I think if any animal becomes extinct, the world becomes

:03:33.:03:36.

I think all animals have a role in nature.

:03:37.:03:41.

I love how important they are to the environment.

:03:42.:03:46.

They mean a lot to me because they are just so amazing,

:03:47.:03:52.

I like them because they sort of seem very wise,

:03:53.:03:59.

I don't know, they just seem to know everything.

:04:00.:04:07.

There's loads more online - take a look at our special guide

:04:08.:04:15.

about elephants and the ivory trade, and you can also find

:04:16.:04:17.

out what you can tell about an elephant from its poo.

:04:18.:04:25.

Tomorrow you will see me trying to find elephants in the wild and

:04:26.:04:30.

meeting dogs working to protect them.

:04:31.:04:31.

Next, the most powerful hurricane in the Caribbean in more than 100

:04:32.:04:35.

Weather forecasters say Hurricane Matthew has brought winds

:04:36.:04:38.

of up to 140 miles per hour and heavy rain.

:04:39.:04:42.

Lots of people have been told to leave their homes.

:04:43.:04:45.

It's forecast to sweep over Cuba and the Bahamas later, and it

:04:46.:04:48.

Newsround is back at 7.40am tomorrow with Leah.

:04:49.:04:56.
