Hi, I'm Leah with the top stories this Thursday morning. | :00:00. | :00:00.
The kids seeing animals in the wild for the first time... | :00:00. | :00:12.
The treasure hunter who struck gold... | :00:13. | :00:15.
And Blue Peter's Iggy leaves the show to become a guide dog. | :00:16. | :00:28.
First up, you might be heading for a day in the classroom, | :00:29. | :00:32.
but in South Africa some kids from cities and poor areas have been | :00:33. | :00:35.
One, two, three! Respect yourself, | :00:36. | :00:51.
respect each other! Here in South Africa, | :00:52. | :00:53.
these kids are learning to respect their environment | :00:54. | :00:55.
and the animals that live in it. It's part of a special | :00:56. | :00:57.
project to teach kids more about African wildlife | :00:58. | :01:03.
and the effects of poaching. In this country, elephants | :01:04. | :01:07.
are poached for their tusks and at least one rhino is killed | :01:08. | :01:11.
every day for their horn. Poachers take them because they can | :01:12. | :01:14.
be sold for huge amounts of money to Asian countries | :01:15. | :01:17.
like China and Vietnam. Some people living there use | :01:18. | :01:20.
the tusks and horns to make ornaments and believe | :01:21. | :01:21.
they have special powers, which scientists say isn't true. | :01:22. | :01:25.
The programme is about inspiring kids to care. | :01:26. | :01:28.
It's everything that we're trying to do is bring kids out | :01:29. | :01:31.
into the bush and give them an opportunity to experience | :01:32. | :01:34.
wildlife in order for them to start to develop a relationship with them | :01:35. | :01:38.
in order for them to care about them. | :01:39. | :01:43.
Kids taking part play sports and have special lessons to learn | :01:44. | :01:46.
about animals and most importantly get to spot them in the wild. | :01:47. | :01:50.
I really want to see a lion because I want to see their teeth, | :01:51. | :01:57.
they're really sharp. I wish to see the | :01:58. | :02:00.
beautiful big animals. I've never seen the big | :02:01. | :02:04.
animals in the world. I want to see the white | :02:05. | :02:06.
rhino because it protects animals that it defends. | :02:07. | :02:10.
These kids are heading out on their first Safari. | :02:11. | :02:13.
Many have not seen creatures like elephants or rhinos before. | :02:14. | :02:29.
Normally we don't see rhinos in part of our areas. | :02:30. | :02:32.
It's exciting, I've never seen a rhino | :02:33. | :02:39.
before so it's exciting. I've never seen a giraffe before. | :02:40. | :02:48.
It's hoped this experience will be inspire these kids to take an active | :02:49. | :02:53.
role in protecting animals and the environment in the future. | :02:54. | :02:55.
Blue Peter fans watching will know that today Iggy is leaving | :02:56. | :02:57.
to start life as a full time Guide Dog. | :02:58. | :02:59.
Iggy joined the show two years ago when she was just a pup and she's | :03:00. | :03:03.
had lots of adventures on the show and with presenter Lindsey. | :03:04. | :03:06.
But now it's time for her to start life as a guide dog. | :03:07. | :03:09.
Lindsey joins me in the studio now, along with Iggy's new owner Callum. | :03:10. | :03:15.
Morning to you both. What brilliant news. Callum, to you first of all, | :03:16. | :03:25.
how did you get matched to Iggy? I applied in June last year for guide | :03:26. | :03:31.
dogs and then they did all the usual processes, working out care skills, | :03:32. | :03:35.
working on fruits and that sort of things, and then I coupled on the | :03:36. | :03:38.
waiting list in a few months later here I am with Iggy. Had it you feel | :03:39. | :03:46.
when you were told it's a blue Peter dot? I didn't know, I was quite | :03:47. | :03:51.
surprised. I was really surprised. They tell you both of information | :03:52. | :03:56.
about the dog and then at the end, one other little thing, this dog has | :03:57. | :04:02.
been on Bloop Peter for a couple of years, are you up for media | :04:03. | :04:07.
attention? And your coping fine. Two years or your life with his | :04:08. | :04:11.
beautiful dog, Lindsay, what we miss the most about her? Oh, I'll miss | :04:12. | :04:16.
loads about her. We've had a brilliant journey on Blue Peter, | :04:17. | :04:21.
shall come in and sniff around, say hello to all the cameramen, we gave | :04:22. | :04:26.
her a bath in the studio once, I think there was footage of it there. | :04:27. | :04:30.
I will miss her being lovely and a bit mischievous, isn't she? Yes, | :04:31. | :04:36.
there is a cheeky side! What kinds of things that she get up to? Around | :04:37. | :04:45.
the house? Yes. Her favourite game when left alone in the house is to | :04:46. | :04:51.
our trainers or slippers and hide it somewhere. That's something we often | :04:52. | :04:55.
come home to. You're like, where do I put my other shoe? Oh Iggy has it. | :04:56. | :05:00.
Thank you so much for coming on to talk to us about it. | :05:01. | :05:03.
Now to Britain's largest ever gold nugget discovery found off the coast | :05:04. | :05:06.
Vincent found it four years ago but has only just revealed details | :05:07. | :05:10.
The area where it was found has been searched again in case there's any | :05:11. | :05:15.
more gold because it's thought it was part of a ?120 million | :05:16. | :05:20.
He can't keep the gold though as it's being put | :05:21. | :05:31.
I looked down and I remember thinking, wow, it was glowing in the | :05:32. | :05:40.
sunlight like a Faberge egg and I remember looking at it, | :05:41. | :05:42.
I was thinking, remember this, I've never | :05:43. | :05:44.
seen anything like it except for in a museum. | :05:45. | :05:46.
Going to the dentist is never fun for us but treating elephants | :05:47. | :05:49.
Experts at a zoo in Bedfordshire realised something was wrong | :05:50. | :05:52.
with Looka when she wasn't eating her food. | :05:53. | :05:54.
A human dentist was called in to help and he removed the tooth. | :05:55. | :05:57.
She's been doing very well, we're told. | :05:58. | :06:00.
That's all from me, Newsround's back this afternoon at 4:20 with Ayshah. | :06:01. | :06:01. |
