In today's programme we're looking at what's been happening in Belgium.

:00:00.:00:19.

There's been a minute's silence to remember the victims

:00:20.:00:20.

of the attacks on Belgium's capital, Brussels, yesterday.

:00:21.:00:22.

In the city people have been writing messages and leaving flowers

:00:23.:00:28.

Anna Foster is in Brussels for the BBC.

:00:29.:00:34.

This is a place called Place de la Bourse.

:00:35.:00:36.

It's a big public square and it's right in the middle of Brussels.

:00:37.:00:40.

Hundreds of people have come out here today

:00:41.:00:42.

They've put big flags on these steps here.

:00:43.:00:46.

They've got balloons as well in the same colours.

:00:47.:00:57.

If you look down here you can see of the candles that people have

:00:58.:01:00.

There are big tubs of chalk and people are writing messages

:01:01.:01:03.

There are lots of children who've come here as well to remember

:01:04.:01:07.

the people who were caught up in the attacks here yesterday.

:01:08.:01:10.

Lots of people came overnight to light candles as well.

:01:11.:01:12.

Lots of people have come after work to lay flowers.

:01:13.:01:15.

Children were back at school today, but lots of them were quiet

:01:16.:01:18.

for a minute earlier today to remember the people

:01:19.:01:20.

who were caught up and involved in these attacks here in Brussels.

:01:21.:01:27.

The extremist group who call themselves IS have said they carried

:01:28.:01:30.

out the attack in Brussels yesterday.

:01:31.:01:31.

Hayley's been looking into why they are and what is being done

:01:32.:01:34.

to try and keep people safe from them.

:01:35.:01:42.

IS are a group based in the Middle East, mainly

:01:43.:01:45.

They have extreme religious beliefs and use brutal violence

:01:46.:01:48.

against anyone who doesn't agree with their views.

:01:49.:01:50.

They claim to follow the religion of Islam,

:01:51.:01:52.

but many people say their beliefs of hatred

:01:53.:01:54.

and violence have little to do with Islam and what the majority

:01:55.:01:56.

Since early 2014 IS has grown quickly, using the internet

:01:57.:02:02.

and social media to recruit followers and spread fear.

:02:03.:02:06.

They've been able to take over large parts of Syria and neighbouring

:02:07.:02:09.

Iraq, declaring this their own state and punishing anyone who doesn't

:02:10.:02:12.

Lots of different groups are fighting in Syria,

:02:13.:02:18.

and nations around the world can't agree on who they want

:02:19.:02:21.

What does unite most of the world is the desire to stop

:02:22.:02:27.

IS because of how violent their methods are.

:02:28.:02:31.

IS claimed they carried out the attacks in Paris,

:02:32.:02:35.

the capital city of France, last year and also the attacks

:02:36.:02:37.

Last year, the UK joined the US and France in bombing some areas

:02:38.:02:44.

The UK's Prime Minister David Cameron argued, in Parliament,

:02:45.:02:54.

that bombing IS was one way to try and stop them.

:02:55.:02:59.

living in Syria and that the UK shouldn't be involved.

:03:00.:03:04.

Following the attacks on Brussels, there has been extra security put

:03:05.:03:07.

in place across the UK and other parts of Europe,

:03:08.:03:10.

with police forces working together to try and keep people safe.

:03:11.:03:31.
