Hi, I'm Martin and this is Newsround. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
First up an earthquake has caused huge destruction in towns | 0:00:13 | 0:00:17
and villages in Central Italy. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
It hit the area in the early hours of Wednesday morning, | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
leaving thousands of people homeless and over 200 people have died. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
Before and after the earthquake: | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
These pictures show buildings turned to rubble. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:36
The quake struck in an area north-east of Rome. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:41
The worst affected places are the towns of Accumoli, Amatrice, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:44
and the village of Pescara del Tronto. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
This is the centre of Amatrice. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:51
And the devastation here is astonishing. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:59
Just looking on this side of the road, it will erect there's | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
almost nothing left this house. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
Strong aftershocks and tremors have followed the earthquake. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:11
Aftershocks are a smaller earthquake that happen after the main quake, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
in the same area, causing even more damage to buildings and roads. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
Police, firefighters, soldiers and volunteers | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
are all working to try and find survivors. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
They carried on throughout the night, searching | 0:01:24 | 0:01:26
through the rubble. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:27
But there are moments of hope. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Like this ten-year-old girl being pulled to safety by rescuers. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:37
In the village of Pescara del Tronto, which was built high | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
on a hillside, it was too difficult to get lifting equipment up there, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
so rescuers used their hands and found this pet dog | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
alive under the rubble. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
Doctors and nurses are treating injured people outside, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:56
because its too dangerous to go inside Amatrice's damaged hospital. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
People in the towns and villages have now been left homeless and it's | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
unsafe for people to go inside the buildings | 0:02:02 | 0:02:05
which are still standing. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
They spent last night sleeping in cars or in makeshift camps. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:13
Yesterday's earthquake isn't the first to hit Italy. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
The country has experienced quakes over the years. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
But this was the most powerful to hit since 1980, | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:27
And remember if there's anything in the news that upsets | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
you there is always help and advice at Newsround online. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
Now with the return of Team GB from Rio we've had loads of athletes | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
coming and going at Newsround HQ. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Today, we grabbed a chat with Gold medal winners Maddie, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
Kate and Helen of the Womens Hockey team. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:47
And we got some very special interviewers in to question them. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
COMMENTATOR: 'Turns. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
'Scores! | 0:02:52 | 0:02:53
'That's the golden goal! | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
'Great Britain have won the Olympic gold medal.' | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
This question is for Maddie. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
When you were younger, did you always feel part of the team | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
cos your training was so different? | 0:03:04 | 0:03:05
Yes, I think so. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
I think your teammates always make an effort to try and keep | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
the goalie involved. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:17
There's definitely days where you spend some time | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
by yourself and you end up | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
singing to yourself or keeping yourself entertained. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
But, yeah, it's always very much a team effort. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
And the goalie very much plays a part in that. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
When you were younger, did you play any other sport? | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
And if so, how did you choose hockey over them? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
When I was really tiny, I did dancing and gymnastics, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:33
probably very badly! | 0:03:33 | 0:03:34
And then I started playing netball, and I swam a lot. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
Me and my sister both went swimming. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:39
And then when I went to secondary school, | 0:03:39 | 0:03:41
hockey was just one of the sports that they did. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
So, I did hockey, athletics, netball, tennis. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
But hockey, I just loved it. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
I loved being part of a team. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
And it was fun. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:49
Really fun. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Do you have to prepare differently for GB then with the | 0:03:50 | 0:03:52
England hockey team? | 0:03:52 | 0:03:53
Essentially, it's kind of the same. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:55
We have a GB programme and it's made up of obviously English | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
players, Scottish players. | 0:03:58 | 0:03:59
We don't have any Welsh players at the moment, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
but we have done in the past, and hopefully will in the future. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
And so we have different tournaments that is GB, like the Olympics. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
But the World Cup is for England, and so our coach is able to just | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
select the English players. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:14
And when it's GB, he can select the English and Scottish players. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
This question is for Maddie. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:20
Why is your hockey stick so different from the others? | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
So, I use the same as these guys in normal play, | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
but in the penalties, I changed it to a super-long, | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
41-inches goalie stick, which has a big head. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
That allows me to get a bigger reach and try and tackle them. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:34
There's one more question to ask. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
Please will you sign the shirt for us? | 0:04:36 | 0:04:37
Absolutely. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:38
Of course. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:44
That's all from me, I'm back with Friday's Newsround tomorrow morning. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:51
See you then. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:56 |
