Hi, I'm Martin and this is Newsround.

0:00:110:00:13

First up an earthquake has caused huge destruction in towns

0:00:130:00:17

and villages in Central Italy.

0:00:170:00:20

It hit the area in the early hours of Wednesday morning,

0:00:200:00:23

leaving thousands of people homeless and over 200 people have died.

0:00:230:00:27

Before and after the earthquake:

0:00:270:00:31

These pictures show buildings turned to rubble.

0:00:310:00:36

The quake struck in an area north-east of Rome.

0:00:360:00:41

The worst affected places are the towns of Accumoli, Amatrice,

0:00:410:00:44

and the village of Pescara del Tronto.

0:00:440:00:47

This is the centre of Amatrice.

0:00:470:00:51

And the devastation here is astonishing.

0:00:510:00:59

Just looking on this side of the road, it will erect there's

0:00:590:01:02

almost nothing left this house.

0:01:020:01:05

Strong aftershocks and tremors have followed the earthquake.

0:01:050:01:11

Aftershocks are a smaller earthquake that happen after the main quake,

0:01:110:01:13

in the same area, causing even more damage to buildings and roads.

0:01:130:01:17

Police, firefighters, soldiers and volunteers

0:01:170:01:21

are all working to try and find survivors.

0:01:210:01:24

They carried on throughout the night, searching

0:01:240:01:26

through the rubble.

0:01:260:01:27

But there are moments of hope.

0:01:270:01:29

Like this ten-year-old girl being pulled to safety by rescuers.

0:01:290:01:37

In the village of Pescara del Tronto, which was built high

0:01:370:01:41

on a hillside, it was too difficult to get lifting equipment up there,

0:01:410:01:45

so rescuers used their hands and found this pet dog

0:01:450:01:48

alive under the rubble.

0:01:480:01:52

Doctors and nurses are treating injured people outside,

0:01:520:01:56

because its too dangerous to go inside Amatrice's damaged hospital.

0:01:560:01:59

People in the towns and villages have now been left homeless and it's

0:01:590:02:02

unsafe for people to go inside the buildings

0:02:020:02:05

which are still standing.

0:02:050:02:08

They spent last night sleeping in cars or in makeshift camps.

0:02:080:02:13

Yesterday's earthquake isn't the first to hit Italy.

0:02:130:02:16

The country has experienced quakes over the years.

0:02:160:02:19

But this was the most powerful to hit since 1980,

0:02:190:02:22

with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale.

0:02:220:02:27

And remember if there's anything in the news that upsets

0:02:270:02:31

you there is always help and advice at Newsround online.

0:02:310:02:35

Now with the return of Team GB from Rio we've had loads of athletes

0:02:350:02:39

coming and going at Newsround HQ.

0:02:390:02:41

Today, we grabbed a chat with Gold medal winners Maddie,

0:02:410:02:43

Kate and Helen of the Womens Hockey team.

0:02:430:02:47

And we got some very special interviewers in to question them.

0:02:470:02:51

COMMENTATOR: 'Turns.

0:02:510:02:52

'Scores!

0:02:520:02:53

'That's the golden goal!

0:02:530:02:55

'Great Britain have won the Olympic gold medal.'

0:02:550:02:59

This question is for Maddie.

0:02:590:03:01

When you were younger, did you always feel part of the team

0:03:010:03:04

cos your training was so different?

0:03:040:03:05

Yes, I think so.

0:03:050:03:09

I think your teammates always make an effort to try and keep

0:03:090:03:12

the goalie involved.

0:03:120:03:17

There's definitely days where you spend some time

0:03:170:03:19

by yourself and you end up

0:03:190:03:20

singing to yourself or keeping yourself entertained.

0:03:200:03:21

But, yeah, it's always very much a team effort.

0:03:210:03:24

And the goalie very much plays a part in that.

0:03:240:03:26

When you were younger, did you play any other sport?

0:03:260:03:28

And if so, how did you choose hockey over them?

0:03:280:03:31

When I was really tiny, I did dancing and gymnastics,

0:03:310:03:33

probably very badly!

0:03:330:03:34

And then I started playing netball, and I swam a lot.

0:03:340:03:37

Me and my sister both went swimming.

0:03:370:03:39

And then when I went to secondary school,

0:03:390:03:41

hockey was just one of the sports that they did.

0:03:410:03:43

So, I did hockey, athletics, netball, tennis.

0:03:430:03:45

But hockey, I just loved it.

0:03:450:03:46

I loved being part of a team.

0:03:460:03:48

And it was fun.

0:03:480:03:49

Really fun.

0:03:490:03:50

Do you have to prepare differently for GB then with the

0:03:500:03:52

England hockey team?

0:03:520:03:53

Essentially, it's kind of the same.

0:03:530:03:55

We have a GB programme and it's made up of obviously English

0:03:550:03:58

players, Scottish players.

0:03:580:03:59

We don't have any Welsh players at the moment,

0:03:590:04:01

but we have done in the past, and hopefully will in the future.

0:04:010:04:04

And so we have different tournaments that is GB, like the Olympics.

0:04:040:04:08

But the World Cup is for England, and so our coach is able to just

0:04:080:04:12

select the English players.

0:04:120:04:14

And when it's GB, he can select the English and Scottish players.

0:04:140:04:17

This question is for Maddie.

0:04:170:04:20

Why is your hockey stick so different from the others?

0:04:200:04:23

So, I use the same as these guys in normal play,

0:04:230:04:26

but in the penalties, I changed it to a super-long,

0:04:260:04:28

41-inches goalie stick, which has a big head.

0:04:280:04:31

That allows me to get a bigger reach and try and tackle them.

0:04:310:04:34

There's one more question to ask.

0:04:340:04:36

Please will you sign the shirt for us?

0:04:360:04:37

Absolutely.

0:04:370:04:38

Of course.

0:04:380:04:44

That's all from me, I'm back with Friday's Newsround tomorrow morning.

0:04:440:04:51

See you then.
