Hayley here, with all your top stories this Wednesday.

:00:11.:00:15.

Today, across the world, people will be remembering

:00:16.:00:17.

It's a chance for people to take time to think about the millions

:00:18.:00:23.

of Jewish people and others who were killed by Hitler

:00:24.:00:25.

and his Nazi party during World War II.

:00:26.:00:28.

Ricky's been finding out what happened and hearing

:00:29.:00:29.

When World War II broke out in 1939, Germany was run by Adolf Hitler

:00:30.:00:36.

Hitler thought Jewish people were inferior and planned ways

:00:37.:00:43.

Anti-Jewish laws were passed and windows were smashed and Jewish

:00:44.:00:49.

people were forced out of their homes.

:00:50.:00:52.

The Nazis rounded up millions of Jews as well as disabled people,

:00:53.:00:55.

gay people and other groups that Hitler thought were inferior,

:00:56.:00:59.

and sent them to prisons called concentration camps.

:01:00.:01:02.

Families were split up and forced to do hard physical work

:01:03.:01:05.

Millions of Jews from across Europe died.

:01:06.:01:15.

It is thought seven out of ten Jews across Europe died.

:01:16.:01:19.

Some children did escape Nazi Germany.

:01:20.:01:21.

Ruth was one of those who managed to escape.

:01:22.:01:22.

Street by street, the Jews were cleared, and any moment

:01:23.:01:25.

We opened the door to a woman from the British Embassy who had

:01:26.:01:30.

She brought the entry visa to Britain, train tickets to get

:01:31.:01:37.

through Germany, through Holland and a ferry to Ramsgate.

:01:38.:01:42.

Heinz also managed to escape the Holocaust.

:01:43.:01:45.

Frank, my brother, was in Leeds and he tried to get me a trainee

:01:46.:01:56.

post and he finally succeeded and we came to Leeds.

:01:57.:01:59.

We managed to get visas for our parents and they came,

:02:00.:02:09.

thank God, because four days later war broke out.

:02:10.:02:11.

Every year people remember those who lost their lives

:02:12.:02:14.

It helps teach us about these terrible events and make sure

:02:15.:02:17.

they are not forgotten so they can never happen again.

:02:18.:02:20.

Gena Turgel was just 14 when her family were rounded up

:02:21.:02:22.

by German troops and sent to a prison called a concentration

:02:23.:02:25.

She was held for two years in terrible conditions

:02:26.:02:28.

She now works hard to make sure people remember what happened.

:02:29.:02:32.

Take me back to when you were 14. What happened to you? The Germans

:02:33.:02:49.

invaded Poland and we found ourselves in Belsen concentration

:02:50.:02:54.

camp and the Nazis came and shouted at us and there were no bunks, no

:02:55.:03:03.

mattresses, no bunks, bare floors. One morning I woke up, stood up and

:03:04.:03:08.

I could not believe my eyes. And the food was very scarce and nobody was

:03:09.:03:18.

allowed to leave. The frost and the fear and the way we felt was

:03:19.:03:25.

impossible to describe. Gena has written a book about her experience

:03:26.:03:29.

and given many talks. She has been given awards for her work, telling

:03:30.:03:36.

young people what happened. What happened to 6 million people,

:03:37.:03:42.

children, innocent grown-ups, so much talent, so many doctors and

:03:43.:03:50.

teachers and scientists and people who could contribute to the world.

:03:51.:03:56.

And all of them, for nothing, killed because they were Jews. This is why

:03:57.:04:03.

I feel it is so important for young people and generations to come to

:04:04.:04:09.

learn about it. We should never allow it again.

:04:10.:04:11.

And go online to the Newsround website to read much more

:04:12.:04:13.

about the Holocaust in our special guide.

:04:14.:04:15.

And at 4.20pm, we'll hear from some children at a school in Manchester

:04:16.:04:18.

who've been hearing from a man who survived the Holocaust.

:04:19.:04:21.

Next, let's look at some other news now, and in tennis,

:04:22.:04:26.

Britain's Johanna Konta is through to the semi final

:04:27.:04:28.

of the Australian Open after beating China's Zhang Shuai.

:04:29.:04:32.

She's the first British woman to get there since 1983.

:04:33.:04:36.

Andy Murray's also made it to the semi finals.

:04:37.:04:43.

He's beaten Spain's David Ferrer in three sets.

:04:44.:04:45.

Now a children's book has won one of the biggest prizes in British

:04:46.:04:53.

writing for only the second time in the award's history.

:04:54.:04:56.

Frances Hardinge wrote a supernatural tale called

:04:57.:04:57.

''The Lie Tree'' which has scooped the Costa Book of the Year.

:04:58.:05:00.

The judges said it was a fantastic story.

:05:01.:05:02.

Thank you very much, and many thanks to the judges for giving the lie to

:05:03.:05:17.

what a lot of us were muttering, that a children's book never gets

:05:18.:05:20.

it. I was one of those people. Thank you all very much.

:05:21.:05:24.

Now have you ever wondered how you have a good wash in space?

:05:25.:05:28.

The problem is that if you pour water on a washcloth

:05:29.:05:31.

So British astronaut Tim Peake's been showing us how it's done.

:05:32.:05:35.

Zoos in China are taking special measures to protect animals

:05:36.:05:41.

One in Shanghai has put a 24-hour heating system

:05:42.:05:50.

The hippo pool is kept at 12 degrees, and at another zoo they've

:05:51.:05:54.

heated plates below ground to keep the chimpanzees cosy.

:05:55.:05:57.

Ricky's back later, so do come back then.

:05:58.:06:00.
