It's Friday. I'm Martin - stick with us to find out what happened when | :00:00. | :00:09.
this old building got one prod too many. | :00:10. | :00:18.
And join me as I report from Mars. Well, sort of. | :00:19. | :00:21.
Let's start then with new attempts to answer one of our universe's | :00:22. | :00:25.
biggest questions - is there life on Mars? A massive replica of the red | :00:26. | :00:28.
planet - built right here in the UK - is being used to develop the very | :00:29. | :00:33.
latest rovers that will find out more about Mars than ever before. | :00:34. | :00:36.
Nel's been to a converted warehouse in Stevenage to find out how it | :00:37. | :00:38.
works. What is it that you are doing here? | :00:39. | :00:53.
We are developing all of these rovers to go to Mars in 2018. We | :00:54. | :00:58.
need to be able to test them in an environment. We have had to build | :00:59. | :01:06.
several different rovers to develop different parts of the actual final | :01:07. | :01:11.
system that will go. The first one is called Bridget. We also have | :01:12. | :01:16.
Bruno and Brian. Once they are on Mars, we cannot help them if they | :01:17. | :01:22.
get stuck. Which is now -- which is why Brian now has a bigger and | :01:23. | :01:31.
better movement to help him on Mars. This enables us to study this in | :01:32. | :01:38.
great detail and there are two rovers running around on the surface | :01:39. | :01:46.
right now operated by NASA. We can see a small region with the | :01:47. | :01:52.
curiosity Rover. There is a larger region outlined in red. We can also | :01:53. | :01:57.
zoom in and look at the blue section here with a high resolution camera. | :01:58. | :02:02.
That will be looking for where to look for signs of life. This is the | :02:03. | :02:10.
first European mission and we are looking for signs of life, past and | :02:11. | :02:16.
present. This bigger and better facility brings the European space | :02:17. | :02:21.
at the European Space Agency one step closer to its first space | :02:22. | :02:27.
mission. It is another small step for mankind. | :02:28. | :02:30.
To the day's other news and the teams searching for the missing | :02:31. | :02:33.
Malaysia Airlines flight think it might be several hundred miles from | :02:34. | :02:36.
where they'd been looking. It's after the latest data suggested the | :02:37. | :02:39.
plane ran out of fuel earlier than thought before it crashed into the | :02:40. | :02:42.
Indian Ocean. Australian officials say their focus is now on an area | :02:43. | :02:46.
almost 700 miles away from the last search zone. Flight MH370 went | :02:47. | :02:49.
missing mid-flight three weeks ago - something that's extremely rare. | :02:50. | :02:55.
There's more on the missing plane along with lots of help and advice | :02:56. | :02:59.
if anything you see in the news upsets you, on the Newsround | :03:00. | :03:01.
website. From tomorrow, same-sex couples will | :03:02. | :03:04.
be able to get married for the first time in England and Wales. Up until | :03:05. | :03:09.
now, gay couples have been able to have a civil partnership which is | :03:10. | :03:12.
similar to marriage but doesn't give all the same rights. Some religious | :03:13. | :03:17.
groups say they are not happy with the changes - and will not carry out | :03:18. | :03:19.
gay weddings. Scotland's announced plans to make same-sex marriage | :03:20. | :03:23.
legal too in the future - but there are no such plans in Northern | :03:24. | :03:27.
Ireland. And Chelsea's Frank Lampard has | :03:28. | :03:30.
joined forces with the Premier League and National Literacy Trust | :03:31. | :03:35.
to try and get more boys reading. The Trust's own research suggests | :03:36. | :03:38.
fewer boys than girls read outside of school and almost two out of | :03:39. | :03:41.
three prefer watching TV to picking up a book. Here's Frank saying why | :03:42. | :03:52.
he thinks it's so important. It is a basic life skills. It is an easy | :03:53. | :03:57.
thing to do and a great way to use your imagination, to read books and | :03:58. | :04:05.
enjoy them. There are -- there is lots of time for lots of different | :04:06. | :04:08.
things for children and reading a small amount of time is enjoyable. | :04:09. | :04:11.
And you've been telling us what you think would get more boys reading on | :04:12. | :04:13.
the website all day. Finally to that old building we saw | :04:14. | :04:31.
at the start of the show. This engineer was working to secure the | :04:32. | :04:35.
empty building and make it safe when he prodded one set of bricks a | :04:36. | :04:39.
little too hard and the whole thing suddenly came crashing down around | :04:40. | :04:41.
him. Fortunately he was safe and nobody else was injured because the | :04:42. | :04:45.
area around the building was cordoned off from the public. | :04:46. | :04:48.
And you can see if that made it into this week's strangest stories right | :04:49. | :04:51.
now on the Newsround website. Which is also where you can check out our | :04:52. | :04:56.
Specials on the kids of Kabul and front line families. We're back | :04:57. | :04:58.
tomorrow. See you then. | :04:59. | :05:01. |
