Hi, I'm Ricky, it's Tuesday and this is Newsround.

:00:00.:00:00.

We find out about the battle that was supposed to end World War One.

:00:00.:00:23.

But first - massive news in the world of football.

:00:24.:00:25.

Roy Hodgson is stepping down as England manager after his side

:00:26.:00:28.

were beaten 2-1 by Iceland in the Euros.

:00:29.:00:33.

Jenny is live in the South of France, where it all happened.

:00:34.:00:39.

England are out of the European Championships.

:00:40.:00:43.

Their loss to Iceland last night - the lowest ranked team in the Euros

:00:44.:00:46.

- will go down as one of the biggest shocks in international

:00:47.:00:49.

This is what happened on a dramatic night in Nice.

:00:50.:00:57.

Roy Hodgson's side were expected to win against a nation

:00:58.:00:59.

who have a population just 330,000, roughly the same size as Leicester.

:01:00.:01:08.

England started well and took the lead within five minutes.

:01:09.:01:12.

Wayne Rooney scoring from the penalty spot.

:01:13.:01:14.

And Rooney scores! CHEERING

:01:15.:01:20.

But just 34 seconds later, Iceland stunned England

:01:21.:01:22.

Sigurdsson scoring with this effort, following poor defending.

:01:23.:01:28.

In the 19th minute, Sigthorsson shot from just inside the box and scored.

:01:29.:01:36.

Joe Hart perhaps should have done better.

:01:37.:01:43.

In the second half, England dominated the game but just couldn't

:01:44.:01:45.

In the end, they were outfought, out-thought and outdone

:01:46.:01:49.

Iceland held on for a famous victory, the first time

:01:50.:02:02.

they have ever beaten England in thenation's history.

:02:03.:02:03.

Then, straight after the final whistle, this happened.

:02:04.:02:05.

My contract was always up after the Euros.

:02:06.:02:08.

So, now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress

:02:09.:02:10.

of this young, hungry and extremely talented group.

:02:11.:02:23.

Well done, Iceland. They go on to Paris.

:02:24.:02:31.

Let's not forget what a fantastic night it was for Iceland.

:02:32.:02:34.

Just listen to this Icelandic commentator when his side scored

:02:35.:02:38.

Will we hear him scream again on Sunday when Iceland take on hosts

:02:39.:03:06.

That would be a huge shock of course, but this Iceland side

:03:07.:03:10.

Thank you, Jenny. How is -- how amazing was that?

:03:11.:03:19.

It was Britain's Marcus Willis who was the headline-maker

:03:20.:03:23.

on the opening day of Wimbledon yesterday.

:03:24.:03:25.

The world number 772 beat Ricardas Berankis to set up a second

:03:26.:03:27.

The win was an amazing turnaround for the Brit,

:03:28.:03:31.

nicknamed 'Willbomb', who almost gave up tennis

:03:32.:03:33.

World number two and former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray

:03:34.:03:36.

begins his Wimbledon campaign later today,

:03:37.:03:38.

In the women's singles, Heather Watson and Johanna Konta

:03:39.:03:41.

On the July first, 1916, British soldiers were sent to fight

:03:42.:03:45.

a battle that was supposed to finish World War One.

:03:46.:03:47.

But, by the end of the Battle of the Somme, more than a million

:03:48.:03:50.

Even now people can't agree on whether it was the right

:03:51.:03:55.

decision or a huge mistake. Here's Martin.

:03:56.:03:56.

100 years ago, Britain and its allies were

:03:57.:03:58.

For two long years, both sides slogged it out,

:03:59.:04:01.

firing at each other from trenches like this one.

:04:02.:04:05.

The British were fighting here and the Germans were over there.

:04:06.:04:07.

After all that time, no one was making any progress.

:04:08.:04:11.

So, the people in charge of the British Army came up

:04:12.:04:14.

They hit the Germans as hard as they could with artillery

:04:15.:04:19.

The plan was from there to take the land from the Germans.

:04:20.:04:23.

But they were wrong and the Germans were waiting for them.

:04:24.:04:25.

Unfortunately, the Germans prepared these positions very well.

:04:26.:04:27.

And we weren't able to take them as planned.

:04:28.:04:33.

The soldiers were met with a wall of bombs and bullets.

:04:34.:04:36.

20,000 were killed and 40,000 were wounded on just

:04:37.:04:38.

Many were just teenagers - very young.

:04:39.:04:45.

They saw it as a big adventure but the reality was very different.

:04:46.:04:49.

Lots of death and things young people should never experience.

:04:50.:04:53.

Even though tens of thousands of soldiers were being killed

:04:54.:04:55.

in these fields, the Army commanders decided

:04:56.:04:57.

The result? Even more lives lost.

:04:58.:05:04.

Often whole groups of men from the same towns and cities

:05:05.:05:11.

volunteered and huge amounts of people were lost.

:05:12.:05:13.

With the news coming through that thousands were not coming back home,

:05:14.:05:16.

it was only a matter of time before families were expecting a knock

:05:17.:05:19.

on their door to inform them they had lost somebody.

:05:20.:05:24.

In the four months that it lasted, more than one million

:05:25.:05:26.

People in charge said it had to be done to win the war.

:05:27.:05:34.

But others argue that so many young men should never have died.

:05:35.:05:37.

Even today, you can see the results of the Battle all around us

:05:38.:05:40.

In your hometown, there is probably a memorial to the soldiers

:05:41.:05:44.

It was a battle that changed Britain.

:05:45.:05:54.

We will have more throughout the week.

:05:55.:05:56.

That's all from me, Newsround's back right here at 4:20pm with Leah.

:05:57.:06:01.
