Good afternoon - it's Friday! | 0:00:03 | 0:00:04
I'm Hayley and we're live with Newsround on CBBC - | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
let's get cracking. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
Just how long does it take a robot to solve a Rubik's Cube? | 0:00:10 | 0:00:14
And the town that still thinks it's Christmas. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:19
Another winter storm has been battering parts of the UK today. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
Gertrude, as it's been named, has caused big problems. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Schools in some parts of Scotland were closed today because wind | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
speeds reached more than 90 miles an hour. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Train and ferry services had to be stopped and some roads | 0:00:39 | 0:00:43
were also closed. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
In Northern Ireland, power lines were brought down | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
by the strong winds. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:48
The BBC's Northern Ireland correspondent Chris Buckler sent | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Newsround this report. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
It's been very windy all day here in Northern Ireland, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:58
and I'm trying to keep the microphone very close to me, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
because it's very difficult to hear if I pull it away from my body. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:05
At some stages here along the coast in Northern Ireland, | 0:01:05 | 0:01:08
the gusts reached 80 mph, and that has caused | 0:01:08 | 0:01:12
all sorts of problems. | 0:01:12 | 0:01:14
There have been electricity lines knocked down | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
and that means that people woke up this morning without power | 0:01:16 | 0:01:19
in their homes. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
That meant lots of difficulties for them as they got | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
ready for school and work. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:25
As they tried to get to school and work, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
they found some roads closed. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
Trees and branches were blocking streets. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:33
All day, people have been removing those to try and make it easier | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
for them returning to their houses this evening. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
The worst is now over for Northern Ireland, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
but nonetheless, you can tell | 0:01:45 | 0:01:46
that there is still rain, there is still wind, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
and it's still pretty cold. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:53
Andy Murray has made it through to the final | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
of the Australian Open. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
He beat Canadian Milos Raonic in a mammoth five set match. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
He came from behind twice to win. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Murray will play world number one Novak Djokovic on Sunday. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
Next to a little town in Kent in the south of England, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
where it's still Christmas, and it could even continue | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
until mid-February. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:16
Jenny's been to investigate. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
A typical high street on a rainy day in late January. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:22
Shopping bags, mums and dads rushing to and from work... | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
And a ten metre tall Christmas tree? | 0:02:25 | 0:02:29
Here in Paddock Wood, it still looks a lot like Christmas. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
That's because there's a collared dove | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
nesting on her eggs, hidden in the branches | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
just behind me. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:38
The mum to be was discovered when the council | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
started to take the tree's decorations down. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
They had to stop work immediately. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
All nesting birds in the UK are protected by law, | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
which makes it illegal to interfere with an active nest. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
That means the tree will have to stay in place | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
until the eggs hatch and all the chicks have | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
flown the nest. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:57
So what do the local children think? | 0:02:57 | 0:02:59
It's quite good to bring a bit of Christmas spirit into January. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:03
I've just seen the dove, and I think | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
it's cool, because not many exciting things happen in Paddock Wood. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:10
I think that's actually quite sweet | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
to have some wildlife near a village. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
I think it's nice that it's found a home. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
I hope that her chicks survive and that she has more eggs later on. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:24
Hopefully, it stays in the tree, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
so we can keep it up till next Christmas. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
Daisy, you can do the call, can't you? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Yeah. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:32 | |
SHE COOS LIKE A DOVE | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Amazing! | 0:03:34 | 0:03:36
I went to the nearby wildlife rescue | 0:03:36 | 0:03:38
to find out how long their feathered guest might stay. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Once the eggs have hatched, the birds normally take | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
between 15 and 19 days before they end up fledging from the nest. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
How common is it for collared doves like Lola here | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
to nest in a busy town centre? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
It's not that strange. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
They do nest in trees. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
They make basic nests out of sticks and twigs, | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
which form a platform. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
But the most important factor is that there is a good food supply | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
around, so you might find that there is somebody nearby | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
that feeds them or there's a feeding station in someone's garden. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
To them, it's a nice site. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
That means the dove and tree could be here | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
well past Valentine's Day. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
So for now, it's still... | 0:04:17 | 0:04:18
Merry Christmas! | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
And just before we go - how long does it take you to solve | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
a Rubik's Cube? | 0:04:27 | 0:04:28
Can you do it this fast? | 0:04:28 | 0:04:31
In just over one second, this robot can solve the puzzle. | 0:04:31 | 0:04:35
The inventors are hoping it's going to go straight | 0:04:35 | 0:04:37
into the records books, beating the current world record | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
for a robot of 2.39 seconds. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
That's all from me. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
Newsround's back right here tomorrow morning at 8.55 with Ricky. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
Have a great weekend. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:54 |
