Hi, I'm Hayley with the top stories this Wednesday morning.

0:00:040:00:07

Coming up in the next few minutes...

0:00:070:00:11

The legacy of Leicester's success getting girls into football.

0:00:110:00:18

And the prize-winning rice crispy pop star.

0:00:180:00:23

This

0:00:230:00:23

This is

0:00:230:00:23

This is Newsround.

0:00:230:00:24

First this morning, thousands of families around the UK

0:00:280:00:31

are waiting to find out what will happen to their jobs

0:00:310:00:34

in towns that make steel.

0:00:340:00:36

It's because Tata, the biggest company that makes metal in the UK,

0:00:360:00:39

is going to sell its business.

0:00:390:00:44

The company has already announced lots of job losses but now says it

0:00:440:00:50

plans to sell its factories because they are not

0:00:500:00:52

making enough money.

0:00:520:00:53

Jenny has been looking into why steel is so important.

0:00:530:00:55

Steel is the most widely used metal in the world.

0:00:550:00:58

It can be extremely strong and flexible.

0:00:580:01:02

It is used to make all kinds of things,

0:01:020:01:06

like buildings and bridges.

0:01:060:01:09

Planes, trains and cars all have parts made out of steel to help

0:01:090:01:11

you get around.

0:01:110:01:12

And you will find it all over your home in things

0:01:120:01:15

like washing machines, fridges and radiators.

0:01:150:01:17

British steel, especially from Sheffield, has long been

0:01:170:01:19

acknowledged as some of the best in the world.

0:01:190:01:21

The UK has a long history of making steel, dating all the way back

0:01:210:01:25

to the 1800s.

0:01:250:01:26

But over the last few decades, this has been changing.

0:01:260:01:30

Nowadays, it is China that leads the way, producing around half

0:01:300:01:32

of the world's steel.

0:01:320:01:33

However, it is making more steel than it actually needs,

0:01:330:01:37

selling the extra stuff cheaply all around the world.

0:01:370:01:40

This is a problem for steel plants in the UK.

0:01:400:01:42

They say that they are losing business because they can't match

0:01:420:01:45

the low prices of cheaper Chinese steel, forcing many UK factories

0:01:450:01:48

to shut down.

0:01:480:01:51

A steelworks in Redcar in the north-east of England closed

0:01:510:01:57

last year and now more than 1,000 people will be losing their jobs

0:01:570:02:00

around the UK, with most of them at the UK's biggest steel plant

0:02:000:02:03

in Port Talbot in Wales.

0:02:030:02:04

Now the Government is coming under pressure to help the plants

0:02:040:02:08

and the communities who need them for jobs.

0:02:080:02:12

The Government says it is working to help staff find new jobs

0:02:120:02:14

as quickly as possible.

0:02:140:02:16

You can find out more about what's happening in the UK steel industry

0:02:160:02:19

on the Newsround website.

0:02:190:02:21

Next to the city of Palmyra in Syria.

0:02:210:02:25

It was one of the most amazing ancient cities in the world,

0:02:250:02:28

but it was under risk of being completely destroyed

0:02:280:02:30

during the war there.

0:02:300:02:32

Until a couple days ago, it was under the control

0:02:320:02:35

of the group IS, which deliberately damaged many of the buildings.

0:02:350:02:44

This is the ancient city of Palmyra.

0:02:440:02:46

It's a Unesco World Heritage Site, which means it is an important

0:02:460:02:49

historical place which should be protected.

0:02:490:02:54

The city is in Syria, where there's been a war

0:02:540:02:56

for five years.

0:02:560:03:01

Many sides are fighting each other to gain more power there,

0:03:010:03:04

including a group which calls itself Islamic State.

0:03:040:03:06

In May 2015, it took control of Palmyra.

0:03:060:03:09

Islamic State destroyed buildings because they have very extreme views

0:03:090:03:12

that hate the idea of other religions, even ones that

0:03:120:03:14

were around thousands of years ago.

0:03:140:03:16

Over the weekend, Palmyra was recaptured by forces who follow

0:03:160:03:20

Syria's President Assad.

0:03:200:03:22

These forces have been very brutal, but they do not agree

0:03:220:03:24

with Islamic State's destruction of the ancient ruins.

0:03:240:03:34

Over the weekend, Palmyra was recaptured by forces who follow

0:03:460:03:48

Syria's President Assad.

0:03:480:03:49

These forces have been very brutal, but they do not agree

0:03:490:03:52

with Islamic State's destruction of the ancient ruins.

0:03:520:03:54

So, for the time, being Palmyra is safe.

0:03:540:03:56

These drone pictures reveal the damage caused by Islamic State.

0:03:560:03:56

Now to the girls whose local football club has inspired them

0:03:580:04:00

to get involved in the beautiful game.

0:04:000:04:02

Leicester City's recent success has spurred on children in the city

0:04:020:04:05

to get involved.

0:04:050:04:06

Here's Leah with more.

0:04:060:04:06

Mahrez, brilliant turn, Mahrez shoots, goal!

0:04:060:04:08

Leicester City Football Club have put in an astonishing performance

0:04:080:04:10

lately.

0:04:100:04:11

In just 12 months, they have stormed from the bottom

0:04:110:04:14

of the Premier League to prove themselves as potential

0:04:140:04:16

champions this season.

0:04:160:04:17

The team have put in such a successful performance over

0:04:170:04:19

the past year that it has encouraged these girls to get more

0:04:190:04:22

involved in football.

0:04:220:04:23

All the kids turning up to some of our sessions in Leicester City

0:04:230:04:26

kit, you know, I have been sort of outdone by Jamie Vardy

0:04:260:04:29

when asking girls, what would be your perfect session?

0:04:290:04:31

And they want him to come and coach.

0:04:310:04:33

So, you know, it has been absolutely massive.

0:04:330:04:35

Definitely.

0:04:350:04:36

I only started liking it this year.

0:04:360:04:38

Sometimes you're with your friends and you get to meet new people

0:04:380:04:41

sometimes as well.

0:04:410:04:43

They all work together and not one team-mate gets left out.

0:04:430:04:46

They always pass the ball to everybody before they score.

0:04:460:04:53

I like all the players and I like going to watch them

0:04:530:04:55

with my dad, so it is quite fun and I like it when they score goals.

0:04:550:04:59

I like how it is quite energetic and it is quite fun.

0:04:590:05:02

Perhaps other football teams will follow Leicester City's lead

0:05:020:05:04

by inspiring more girls to be football stars of the future.

0:05:040:05:11

Well done, girls.

0:05:110:05:12

And now to this hotel with a difference.

0:05:120:05:14

The Aquarium of Paris is running a special contest.

0:05:140:05:16

The winners will get to spend a night underwater,

0:05:160:05:19

sleeping in amongst 35 different species of shark.

0:05:190:05:22

The aquarium staff think that sharks are misunderstood creatures

0:05:220:05:26

and the idea is to explain the life of sharks so people can learn more

0:05:260:05:30

about their different behaviours.

0:05:300:05:35

Looks scary to me!

0:05:350:05:36

Finally, to a pop tribute with a difference.

0:05:360:05:38

A huge fan of this guy, Micheal Jackson, has made something

0:05:380:05:41

a little bit unusual to remember him.

0:05:410:05:44

Check this out - the seven foot tall statue is made from rice crispies,

0:05:440:05:47

chocolate and icing.

0:05:470:05:50

It took five weeks and won a bronze medal at the Cake International Show

0:05:500:05:53

in Birmingham.

0:05:530:05:54

It will now be sold off for charity.

0:05:540:05:57

Amazing.

0:05:570:05:58

That's all from me, Newsround's back at 4.20pm.
