Tonight on Watchdog, Christmas is the one time of year you really want

:00:11.:00:15.

to get your TV right. Hundreds of thousands of people have signed up

:00:16.:00:20.

to Skype Others-macro all singing all dancing service, but it might

:00:21.:00:24.

not be as cute as they expect. But we actually turn on the TV, we don't

:00:25.:00:28.

know if that will work or not, it comes up as the connection failure,

:00:29.:00:34.

please wait and back and take up to 30 minutes before it actually

:00:35.:00:38.

reboots itself, you could end up missing Chris Mears bake off, a lot

:00:39.:00:43.

of very angry customers want answers and action from Sky. -- Chris Mears.

:00:44.:01:02.

Hello and welcome to the programme. Tonight, John Lewis, they pride

:01:03.:01:12.

themselves on being never knowingly undersold but not all their

:01:13.:01:15.

customers are convinced. I honestly thought that they would respond by

:01:16.:01:20.

saying thank you, it you found it cheaper, we can change our pricing

:01:21.:01:24.

to reflect this. But the response was, they were not prepared to price

:01:25.:01:30.

match. Until 2011, this was the home of the Inland Revenue, the team that

:01:31.:01:33.

used to count the pennies for the nation and tonight it is the home of

:01:34.:01:39.

Team Watchdog. The final verdict is in, how much they saved on

:01:40.:01:43.

broadband, groceries and by fixing their broken appliances? And Team

:01:44.:01:53.

Watchdog have come together for a Christmas party and we have tried to

:01:54.:01:56.

spend as little money as possible. All the food is from budget

:01:57.:01:59.

supermarkets and we will put them through a taste test. How much of

:02:00.:02:04.

these festive chocolate strung in the last? All will be revealed. At

:02:05.:02:08.

Christmas, you want to be with the ones you love but what if you have

:02:09.:02:12.

not met them yet? One solution, internet dating, I have even signed

:02:13.:02:18.

up myself to see if I could find a fantastic Mr Fox.

:02:19.:02:31.

We found out that joining one site means your profile could end up in

:02:32.:02:35.

places you never imagined it would. Tips on how to stay safe and find

:02:36.:02:38.

love this Christmas coming up in a bit. There will be someone looking

:02:39.:02:41.

to pick up a dog or puppy in time for Christmas day and in spite of

:02:42.:02:44.

messages for decades to tell us to avoid doing just that, tonight we

:02:45.:02:47.

show you that it can be hard to spot the puppy dealers you should avoid

:02:48.:02:49.

buying from. This is very sad. This little puppy is desperately afraid,

:02:50.:02:55.

it is trying to appease us by showing submissive behaviour and

:02:56.:02:59.

backing away from us. Much more on that story later. One of the most

:03:00.:03:04.

important things about Christmas day is what is on television and there

:03:05.:03:09.

is a lot to what this Team Watchdog -- tip Patrick Christmas day.

:03:10.:03:14.

Christmas university challenge. Paul O'Grady, love of dogs at Christmas.

:03:15.:03:19.

Home alone. I want to watch all of those. I want to watch four things

:03:20.:03:26.

at the same time. That is why hundreds of thousands of people have

:03:27.:03:31.

signed up to Sky's fancy new service Q.

:03:32.:03:40.

We're days away from Christmas and it's that time of year

:03:41.:03:43.

where festive films and seasonal specials fill TV schedules.

:03:44.:03:45.

But with so many channels and so much choice it can be very

:03:46.:03:48.

Especially if your family has somewhat different tastes.

:03:49.:03:56.

And this is where Sky's flagship new product Sky Q

:03:57.:03:59.

could make your Christmas all that easier.

:04:00.:04:06.

Another reason that Sky Q is hugely good, you can axis it in another

:04:07.:04:12.

room. See? It promises you can record up

:04:13.:04:15.

to four programmes at once It also allows you to watch Sky

:04:16.:04:20.

around your house and on the move. So could this be the answer to those

:04:21.:04:24.

festive telly fights? Well, not according

:04:25.:04:27.

to some Watchdog viewers. Sky Q uses one main box,

:04:28.:04:33.

connected to a satellite dish, This is then supposed to seamlessly

:04:34.:04:35.

connect to wireless miniboxes around your home, allowing you to

:04:36.:04:42.

watch up to three different channels at the same time, in different

:04:43.:04:45.

rooms. But we've heard from scores of you

:04:46.:04:49.

having problems with the service. I'm going to meet Dawn

:04:50.:04:53.

and husband Colin in Bracknell. They jumped at the chance

:04:54.:04:56.

of an upgrade to Sky Q. So you had it installed,

:04:57.:05:08.

what was the reality? It started to sort of deteriorate

:05:09.:05:11.

after a couple of weeks when you had to keep rebooting things because it

:05:12.:05:15.

would lose the signal. The picture would be there,

:05:16.:05:19.

you'd be watching the TV normally, the screen would start to freeze

:05:20.:05:22.

so you'd get a juddery picture then you'd then lose the screen

:05:23.:05:24.

altogether and it would just be a blue screen and the reboot

:05:25.:05:27.

would generally take Tried to contact Sky initially,

:05:28.:05:30.

which is another frustrating thing They've very difficult

:05:31.:05:37.

to get hold of. Eventually got hold of someone,

:05:38.:05:42.

explained the problems and by the end we've had enough

:05:43.:05:45.

and we said we wanted it removed. If you do decide to pay out

:05:46.:05:48.

for Sky Q, it's worth noting If you opt for their top package

:05:49.:05:56.

with Sky Sports and Movies it'll That's before you've even paid

:05:57.:06:03.

for broadband and a phone line. And once you factor in additional

:06:04.:06:11.

boxes and installation costs, this can all come to more

:06:12.:06:15.

than ?1,000 a year. So for all that, you would

:06:16.:06:20.

expect a premium service. But it seems that when it comes

:06:21.:06:23.

to getting your Sky Q problems sorted it seems that's

:06:24.:06:26.

not always on offer. Lee Parker contacted us, after

:06:27.:06:31.

having problems with his Sky Q. He had it installed for his family

:06:32.:06:34.

a couple of months ago and is less Basically can't do anything on it,

:06:35.:06:38.

other than watch the TV. Can't watch On Demand,

:06:39.:06:46.

can't watch your recordings, can't record, can't pause TV,

:06:47.:06:48.

can't rewind the TV, The options are there

:06:49.:06:50.

but they don't work. It's just a blank screen

:06:51.:06:58.

or an error message. Lee says that with broadband

:06:59.:07:02.

and phone line on top of his Sky Q, he's paying around

:07:03.:07:05.

?120 a month to Sky. I would expect to be a VIP member

:07:06.:07:10.

of Sky for the amount of money I'm paying every month

:07:11.:07:14.

for them, you know. I've tried getting in touch with Sky

:07:15.:07:17.

on several occasions. Then when I did finally speak

:07:18.:07:19.

to someone they said I were going to have to wait two

:07:20.:07:22.

week for an engineer to come out. With Christmas just around

:07:23.:07:25.

the corner, Lee and his family are hoping Sky can get things sorted

:07:26.:07:28.

before the big day. And the frustration of waiting

:07:29.:07:32.

for an engineer is something we're But some Watchdog viewers have

:07:33.:07:35.

also told us that even when the engineer does make it out,

:07:36.:07:42.

it doesn't mean they Richard Briggs from Liversedge

:07:43.:07:45.

in West Yorkshire emailed us after having weekly problems

:07:46.:07:52.

with his Sky Q. When we actually turn on the TV we

:07:53.:07:56.

actually don't know if it's going to work or not, it's so temperamental

:07:57.:08:00.

as a system, that it's mainly on the main TV that it comes up as a

:08:01.:08:04.

connection failure, please wait, and that can take up to 30-40 minutes

:08:05.:08:09.

before it actually reboots itself. I rang Sky up, they

:08:10.:08:15.

sent out an engineer. The engineer came out

:08:16.:08:20.

and he explained to me that the reason I wasn't actually

:08:21.:08:22.

getting a connection was down to the thickness

:08:23.:08:24.

of the walls within the property and the property's a two-bedroom

:08:25.:08:28.

cottage, not a five-bed mansion. So, is an internet

:08:29.:08:33.

problem the cause? Well, Richard has Sky

:08:34.:08:36.

broadband and says he's never The last conversation I had

:08:37.:08:38.

with the Sky operator was that there was nothing

:08:39.:08:47.

more that they could do. With Christmas approaching

:08:48.:08:50.

we will probably watch a lot more TV than we normally do and it would be

:08:51.:08:53.

really frustrating and upsetting if we can't watch

:08:54.:08:55.

the programmes that we enjoy. And our inbox has been filling up

:08:56.:09:05.

with issues relating to Sky Q. Ryan Hughes from Bristol

:09:06.:09:12.

had his box installed in July. He says he's had three engineers out

:09:13.:09:15.

since to try and Whilst Peter Molokwu

:09:16.:09:19.

from Borehamwood, says he had issues He says his screen would go blank

:09:20.:09:25.

and he'd sometimes have to restart his box up to six times

:09:26.:09:30.

a day - whilst still paying full So come on, Sky, can

:09:31.:09:33.

you get your new flagship product Or are some of your customers

:09:34.:09:39.

going to be facing a blank screen Sky told us that it has apologised

:09:40.:09:56.

to everyone in our film and is doing everything it can to fix things. It

:09:57.:10:01.

said the small percentage of Sky Q households have had problems which

:10:02.:10:04.

can be due to factors like interference with their home Wi-Fi

:10:05.:10:08.

or technical bugs which its experts are fixing as they arise with

:10:09.:10:13.

software updates or home visits. The company added that it is recruiting

:10:14.:10:18.

hundreds of additional engineers to cut waits for installations.

:10:19.:10:27.

Consumer Crusaders Team Watchdog have been enormously helpful so we

:10:28.:10:32.

have treated them to a budget Christmas dinner. Right across the

:10:33.:10:37.

series they have proved that with some small changes, you can get

:10:38.:10:42.

cheaper online groceries, cheaper energy and as Keely and Dan found

:10:43.:10:47.

out, faster broadband. You don't want to be sat in the lounge all the

:10:48.:10:50.

time, You cannot use it in here. We gave

:10:51.:11:02.

them some broadband boosting tips, but did they work? Was it 1.4 in

:11:03.:11:09.

here? Dead slow. What have we got now? 14.7 Mb. That's fantastic.

:11:10.:11:17.

Chuffed to bits. You are too, I know you are. I will go. That is an

:11:18.:11:26.

incredible ten times faster and much closer to the 17 megabits top speed

:11:27.:11:33.

advertised by their provider. So, what difference has it made? With

:11:34.:11:38.

how the new route and it means we now have the intellect connection in

:11:39.:11:43.

our new kitchen extension. As a change things? I can watch movies of

:11:44.:11:48.

the band now. Quality as much as anything else, people come to visit,

:11:49.:11:53.

lots of people using the Wi-Fi, what can they do to get the best possible

:11:54.:11:59.

broadband? Keep the route away from electrical devices, make sure you

:12:00.:12:03.

have the most up-to-date one. Check your software at the computer is

:12:04.:12:07.

up-to-date and also, if you're not getting the speed that you should

:12:08.:12:11.

be, contact the provider and have a moan and you can use our speed

:12:12.:12:15.

checker on the website to see what they should be getting. We have got

:12:16.:12:19.

a bit more work because we commissioned a special Christmas

:12:20.:12:22.

nationwide poll that found when it comes to choosing which party food

:12:23.:12:26.

to buy for friends and family at Christmas, taste and price topped

:12:27.:12:31.

the list. It is boomtime for budget supermarkets, we know that, what

:12:32.:12:40.

have we done? We put them to the taste test with our young Team

:12:41.:12:42.

Watchdog guinea pigs. Three supermarkets, Iceland, Liddell and

:12:43.:12:46.

all day and you guys did the pigs in blankets test, which one was your

:12:47.:12:52.

favourite? They were more full of herbs and spices. Shall we look at

:12:53.:13:03.

which one it is. It is Iceland at ?2 5410. Are you surprised? Let's look

:13:04.:13:12.

at the others. Underneath here is the Lidl one. It is a bit cheaper.

:13:13.:13:22.

And then Aldi. Interesting you say about herbs, they do have more herds

:13:23.:13:26.

in them, a bit of ginger and not make and more sausage and lest they

:13:27.:13:34.

can. Thank you very much, more Christmas food will be put to the

:13:35.:13:36.

test later on. Big ones, small ones,

:13:37.:13:43.

the friendly ones and even Now, because we care so much

:13:44.:13:48.

we decided to jettison the usual Rogue Traders story tonight to talk

:13:49.:13:52.

about what you should expect You should expect the breeder

:13:53.:13:55.

or seller to be properly registered and licenced by the local authority,

:13:56.:14:01.

which should mean they And if they're licenced you should

:14:02.:14:03.

feel secure in the knowledge that your puppy has been well reared

and is healthy and happy. and seller called

and her son Matthew and she saw one for sale

:15:15.:15:28.

on Ivy Leaf's website. Kevin Knox showed her around,

:15:29.:15:31.

and her first impression was that the kennels looked clean

:15:32.:15:33.

and professional but the dogs weren't as social as

:15:34.:15:36.

they should have been. When we did go

:15:37.:15:40.

in and view the pups, there were about seven of them

:15:41.:15:43.

hiding behind the bed. I just thought they were little

:15:44.:15:45.

babies, so they're shy. Marie is not a puppy expert,

:15:46.:15:49.

so she wasn't to know that that's Puppies should be interested

:15:50.:15:52.

in meeting new people and bounding Marie spotted two pups she liked

:15:53.:15:56.

and bought them both for ?350 each. Within 24 hours thereabouts

:15:57.:16:03.

Harry became unwell. So I immediately got

:16:04.:16:12.

in contact with the vets. And it was possibly

:16:13.:16:21.

about another week I had them back and

:16:22.:16:22.

forth to the vets. It was at that point that Harry

:16:23.:16:27.

went to the hospital Marie said he vet at the hospital

:16:28.:16:41.

was concerned because only the previous week he'd examined

:16:42.:16:46.

another puppy from Ivy Leaf Kennels that had had Parvo virus,

:16:47.:16:53.

a potentially fatal infection Concerned Marie's puppies could have

:16:54.:16:56.

caught the virus, he sent them home with anti-virals plus antibiotics

:16:57.:17:01.

for Kennel Cough. Fortunately after the medical care

:17:02.:17:03.

they received Harry and Cooper didn't go on to contract Parvo Virus

:17:04.:17:06.

and made a full recovery. The fact that they have been

:17:07.:17:11.

so poorly, has caused an awful lot of upset and stress to the point

:17:12.:17:14.

that I don't think I'll get over it. Dee Anderson also had a bad

:17:15.:17:21.

experience with a puppy She bought this Bison Frise

:17:22.:17:23.

from Kevin Knox in October Within hours Shelby started

:17:24.:17:29.

showing signs of illness. But through that night,

:17:30.:17:39.

the puppy was really really On the Monday I took Shelby

:17:40.:17:43.

to the vets and they said we'll have to give you two lots of different

:17:44.:17:50.

medications for Kennel Cough, and they said that his little

:17:51.:17:53.

digestive system wasn't good. But over the next 17 days

:17:54.:17:56.

Shelby's condition worsened, despite being prescribed with more

:17:57.:17:59.

antibiotics and steroids. By then Shelby was on a drip

:18:00.:18:07.

and they had gave Shelby an x-ray. The x-ray showed that

:18:08.:18:10.

Shelby had pneumonia. And that's when they've said,

:18:11.:18:14.

you know, he won't make it. He didn't deserve that,

:18:15.:18:19.

the poor little pup. And I promised him that

:18:20.:18:26.

I would look after him. I would absolutely wholeheartedly

:18:27.:18:36.

say never, don't ever go to that kennel and buy a puppy

:18:37.:18:40.

because it's not good. You know, them pups don't deserve

:18:41.:18:47.

to be not looked after properly. And then sold on just

:18:48.:18:51.

for his to build his bank balance. And the sad thing is that we could

:18:52.:18:54.

have had our pick of Ivy Leaf customers who have seen dogs either

:18:55.:19:04.

die, or if they are lucky, scrape through serious illness

:19:05.:19:07.

in the days immediately following a purchase

:19:08.:19:09.

from Kevin Knox. Since the Inside Out piece in 2010,

:19:10.:19:14.

we know of at least 52 serious illnesses,

:19:15.:19:17.

and 11 deaths. Of course, we can only talk

:19:18.:19:18.

about the dogs we know about. It's hinting at an operation

:19:19.:19:21.

where things are seriously wrong. Now let's find out if Kevin Knox

:19:22.:19:26.

is doing everything he can, to make sure the dogs

:19:27.:19:29.

he sells, don't get sick. And whether he really does offer

:19:30.:19:32.

the quality pets that he promises. Yes, a licensed breeder who sells

:19:33.:19:39.

dogs whose chances of survival seem Lessons to be learnt in what to look

:19:40.:19:42.

for when you a puppy in ten. Next tonight, Internet dating.

:19:43.:20:02.

Millions if you are signed up and you have been telling us about the

:20:11.:20:15.

:20:16.:20:16.

definitely did not share. Yeah, sorry, I don't think this

:20:17.:20:20.

is going to work out. Which is why internet dating

:20:21.:20:36.

should make things easier. A seemingly great way

:20:37.:20:39.

to narrow the field, and meet likeminded people looking

:20:40.:20:41.

for the same thing. And you might think one sure-fire

:20:42.:20:46.

way to meet someone you get on with would be to join one

:20:47.:20:49.

of the more targeted sites - for things like hobbies,

:20:50.:20:52.

jobs or interests. After all, these are supposed

:20:53.:20:55.

to match likeminded people. When you sign up to one of these

sites you might not realise that you could then pop up on a site

because if you think you have found the one, you could easily fall for

it. Dating fraud cost victims ?27 million last year alone, with 60% of

And it is problems with this part of the process

:24:33.:24:35.

Tricky cancellations and surprise auto-renewal costs top our leader

:24:36.:24:38.

And Match.com is the site we're hearing about most often.

:24:39.:24:45.

Lawrence Finn cancelled the auto-renewal option

:24:46.:24:47.

Match.com confirmed this in an email.

:24:48.:24:55.

A few months down the line I discovered that they had taken

:24:56.:25:00.

another ?160 out of my account for another six months subscription

:25:01.:25:02.

I subsequently received an email from Match.com saying

:25:03.:25:09.

that they weren't going to give me a refund because I'd apparently

:25:10.:25:13.

reactivated the renewal of my subscription but I had no

:25:14.:25:15.

recollection of having done so, and they couldn't

:25:16.:25:18.

And Donald MacLennan faced similar problems after cancelling his

:25:19.:25:23.

At the due date, when my subscription should have finished

:25:24.:25:32.

I kept getting just normal messages from ladies as if you know,

:25:33.:25:35.

As it happened I found out later that I was.

:25:36.:25:42.

They said that I hadn't cancelled but I had an email

:25:43.:25:49.

that I had cancelled, so I mean what's what, I don't know,

:25:50.:25:56.

It's important to keep a close eye on your subscription,

:25:57.:25:59.

even if you think you've cancelled it, according to dating

:26:00.:26:01.

A lot of the sites have auto renewal.

:26:02.:26:04.

You have to be really careful making sure that you have actually

:26:05.:26:08.

Like any area of the internet sometimes these sites will have

:26:09.:26:12.

multiple screens that you have to keep going through before

:26:13.:26:15.

Make sure that any direct debits are cancelled with your bank

:26:16.:26:18.

and then I would always check my bank statements

:26:19.:26:21.

for the following couple of months just so that something isn't

:26:22.:26:23.

Match told us they are very sorry to hear of these users' experiences. It

:26:24.:26:37.

says the descriptions are automatically renewed for people's

:26:38.:26:41.

convenience and terms and conditions are carefully reviewed.

:26:42.:26:45.

Thank you, Nikki, and there is plenty more information on our

:26:46.:26:51.

website. Coming up, promises, promises, promises. John Lewis says

:26:52.:26:55.

it is never knowingly undersold but it is not that simple. And an Amazon

:26:56.:27:00.

delivery sale. This is not how you want to receive your Christmas

:27:01.:27:07.

presents, is it? A lot of chocolate mysteriously goes

:27:08.:27:11.

missing in the home around Christmas time. Blame grandad. But this year,

:27:12.:27:17.

some of your favourite festive chocolate has disappeared even

:27:18.:27:18.

before you can get your hands on it. I eat Kit Kat a lot but I did not

:27:19.:27:46.

realise it has reduced in size so yes, quite surprised about that. Kit

:27:47.:27:52.

Kat 's got smaller so we are getting a smaller break.

:27:53.:28:10.

15%? I have lost ten Maltesers. But as a handful. It adds up, it counts!

:28:11.:28:24.

I cannot believe it. What a liberty. I want my chocolate! I am in shock.

:28:25.:28:30.

I am angry but I will not stop buying it. And the shrinking

:28:31.:28:35.

chocolate continues with some Christmas classics including these

:28:36.:28:39.

two stocking fillers. You may have heard the news about Toblerone. 12%

:28:40.:28:44.

was lopped off the mountainous chocolate bar earlier this year and

:28:45.:28:49.

it also changed shape with bigger gaps between the triangles. And it

:28:50.:28:53.

is now on hold triangle and a bit lighter.

:28:54.:28:57.

But you might not have heard about the Terry's chocolate Orange. It has

:28:58.:29:04.

decreased from 175 grams to 157 grams, shrinking 10%.

:29:05.:29:11.

The company that make these chocolate say that the size

:29:12.:29:18.

reduction is due to higher input costs and a commitment to reduce

:29:19.:29:22.

portion sizes to tackle obesity and it adds that the Toblerone design

:29:23.:29:27.

change only affects the 170 grams bar which is now 150 grams. Nestle

:29:28.:29:33.

makes Kit Kat and they say that the traits had previously been

:29:34.:29:35.

manufactured in different sizes in different factories and this year it

:29:36.:29:40.

standardised the size. And Morris which makes Maltesers and Galaxy

:29:41.:29:45.

counters says it has reduced the size of its products due to higher

:29:46.:29:50.

costs in raw materials. The companies say they waited as long as

:29:51.:29:53.

possible before making these changes, only doing them as a last

:29:54.:29:55.

result. Back to our investigation of

:30:13.:30:14.

like when we buy a puppy there? Team member Mark and expert vet

:30:15.:30:17.

Simon Thomas are going undercover. They want to see if Kevin Knox ,

:30:18.:30:20.

licenced breeder and puppy seller of Ivy Leaf Kennels looks

:30:21.:30:23.

after his puppies in Responsible puppy breeders

:30:41.:30:45.

sounds should be played to them that they might experience

:30:46.:30:48.

in a domestic home. So, does Ivy Leaf kennels

:30:49.:30:50.

match these standards? When our undercover puppy purchasers

arrive they meet the man himself. Kevin Knox shows us

everything else is in here. That's the Cavalier

but he also has a pet-shop licence, We breed some ourselves

and we also buy them off other They've all had first vaccinations,

:31:34.:31:43.

they've all been vet checked, they also micro chipped?and

:31:44.:31:49.

there all sort of up So Kevin does appear

:31:50.:31:56.

to know his stuff. A responsible breeder

:31:57.:31:58.

should also be concerned This is their area, they're sort

:32:13.:32:14.

first thing every morning. The kennels seem clean,

:32:15.:32:18.

but they are incredibly sparse - Just hard plastic beds and sawdust.

:32:19.:32:20.

And what happens if we're worried You have 72 hours to get

:32:21.:32:27.

to take them to your vet. If your vet sees there's anything

:32:38.:32:40.

you a full refund. These are animals we're talking

:32:41.:32:43.

about, not faulty toasters. Vet Simon Thomas is worried

:32:44.:32:49.

about the Beagle puppies in particular, because of the way

:32:50.:32:51.

they avoid contact. Pretending that it's

:32:52.:32:55.

a present for his wife, Simon asks to see one

:32:56.:32:57.

of them up close. How quickly can

:32:58.:33:03.

we get a beagle then? I mean it's there to go now,

:33:04.:33:08.

if you want to take it now, it's fine but it isn't microchipped

:33:09.:33:15.

because we've run out I'm getting some delivered today

:33:16.:33:18.

that should be here by dinner time, but I can't guarantee that.

:33:19.:33:28.

We are asking to take the puppy away now but it's actually a breach

:33:29.:33:31.

of regulations for Kevin to sell us a dog before it's been microchipped

:33:32.:33:34.

if it's older than eight weeks, rules he's already made clear

:33:35.:33:37.

he is aware of. He's told us that this puppy

:33:38.:33:39.

is between eight and nine weeks old but is happy for us

:33:40.:33:42.

to take him away. Remember - when you're buying

:33:43.:33:46.

a puppy, the seller should ask as many questions

:33:47.:33:49.

about you as you do about the dog. But having made no background

:33:50.:33:51.

checks on us at all, and with no microchip in place Kevin

:33:52.:33:54.

nonchalantly gives us the green Having made our choice we follow

:33:55.:33:59.

Kevin Knox back in to go This is the pup's pedigree

and registration document. The registration certificate doesn't

:34:08.:34:19.

tell us anything about who bred Time to get this little

:34:20.:34:21.

pup checked over. We decide to call our

:34:22.:34:26.

new puppy Beasley. Wanting to check him out

:34:27.:34:34.

straightaway, vet Simon Thomas takes Beasley direct to a local vet

:34:35.:34:37.

practice, and finds he has conjunctivitis and an inherited

:34:38.:34:40.

defect with his teeth Physically Beasley is in relatively

:34:41.:34:42.

good health, but Simon is more concerned about the mental wellbeing

:34:43.:34:51.

of Beasley and all the other dogs. What was terribly lacking for these

:34:52.:34:54.

puppies was any evidence of socialisation or social

:34:55.:34:57.

interaction, their whole world was a tiny sawdust pen

:34:58.:35:00.

an occasional visit from him, a plastic bed and

:35:01.:35:04.

that was their lot. Simon doubts the puppies are used

:35:05.:35:09.

to people or the sounds So Beasley's next stop

:35:10.:35:11.

was Pet Behaviourist Carrie Evans. He's happy to investigate

:35:12.:35:17.

which is good, that's nice, but he doesn't

:35:18.:35:19.

want to engage with me. Hello, shall we just say hello

:35:20.:35:24.

to each other first? This to me is I'm not

:35:25.:35:27.

happy being held. So that would indicate he's not

:35:28.:35:32.

had very much social Once a puppy reaches 12 weeks

old, its behavioural But Beasley is young,

:35:36.:35:39.

and after a few hours in Carrie's company,

:35:40.:35:45.

he's starting to get used to human With this little man,

:35:46.:35:51.

we've caught him early enough. We've got a lot of time to work

:35:52.:35:55.

on him and correct some of the things that have gone wrong

:35:56.:35:59.

in his life already. If we were going for an older puppy,

:36:00.:36:01.

of 12 weeks plus, we probably would have mistakes for the rest

:36:02.:36:05.

of our lives. There is a more worrying example

:36:06.:36:08.

of a poorly socialised puppy Posted by Kevin Knox it

:36:09.:36:11.

shows a cocker spaniel This is very sad, this little puppy

:36:12.:36:17.

is desperately afraid, it is trying to appease us

:36:18.:36:24.

by showing submissive behaviour and backing away from us,

:36:25.:36:29.

because it is just terrified of this experience of a human approaching

:36:30.:36:34.

it, and that really is a clear symbol of a puppy that has

:36:35.:36:37.

not been socialised. After visiting Ivy Leaf Kennels

:36:38.:36:44.

Simon Thomas was concerned about Kevin Knox's care

:36:45.:36:46.

of the puppies that remain there. I worried about the welfare

:36:47.:36:50.

of all of these puppies. They were just seemed to be

:36:51.:36:58.

a commodity to him. Beasley and many of his pals

:36:59.:37:01.

in Ivy Leaf Kennels But the kennels look clean,

:37:02.:37:03.

and Kevin is a licensed dealer So why have so many other puppies

:37:04.:37:10.

got sick or died shortly And what do you need to know

:37:11.:37:13.

if you go to a breeder or puppy Tonight Team Watchdog are here

:37:14.:37:27.

having a Christmas party and throughout the show we are catching

:37:28.:37:31.

up with them to remind all of us how to get better value for money. This

:37:32.:37:38.

time, it is the turn of newly savvy shoppers Sharon and Malley. I've

:37:39.:37:44.

come to Devon to go on a weekly shop with these girls to see if we can

:37:45.:37:49.

save them money. Are you going to look at the price of the pack? No, I

:37:50.:37:54.

don't usually. Is this like a family thing, that you go shopping

:37:55.:38:00.

together? I do it every now and again and I find that I spend more.

:38:01.:38:07.

Do you sneak in traits. Those apples look lovely. Are they on your list?

:38:08.:38:14.

No. Get them out then! What is the total? ?61. Thank you very much. We

:38:15.:38:26.

also asked Shannon to try online shopping for the same order and it

:38:27.:38:33.

came in at ?70. That is more expensive than her in-store shop. By

:38:34.:38:40.

following all of our tips, Shannon could have got her shopping for ?52.

:38:41.:38:47.

If she did this every week, that could give her a saving of more than

:38:48.:38:55.

?900 across the year. Malia and Shannon join us now along with

:38:56.:39:02.

Steph. What is the one thing that you buy now regularly were you make

:39:03.:39:07.

regular savings? Baked beans. I have changed the way I buy baked beans.

:39:08.:39:11.

That's a joy for everyone else! What advice did you give them to make

:39:12.:39:16.

sure that the bills were cheaper. It is like comparing prices, don't just

:39:17.:39:20.

go for what you think looks cheapest, compare the unit price,

:39:21.:39:25.

look at sizes as well, bigger packs are not always cheaper and if you're

:39:26.:39:29.

buying online, look at the different delivery slots because they can vary

:39:30.:39:34.

in price. We have pitted the budget supermarkets against each other,

:39:35.:39:39.

Aldi, Iceland and Lidl. We have our mince pie lovers. Which one did you

:39:40.:39:49.

go for? We went for Lauren Layfield -- letter A. It was buttery. It is

:39:50.:39:54.

meant fluid in your mouth. Let's look at what it is. It is Iceland.

:39:55.:40:03.

You mentioned fruitiness. That one has more mincemeat in. Let's look at

:40:04.:40:12.

the others. Aldi. And C, that was Lidl. Are you surprised? Yes. You

:40:13.:40:17.

like them, that is the main thing. Sophie, how is the Christmas

:40:18.:40:33.

shopping going? It is almost done. After a mad panic this morning. It

:40:34.:40:37.

is stressful, but retailers try to make it easier by giving you a price

:40:38.:40:41.

matching promise, meaning that you do not have to trek around every

:40:42.:40:45.

single shop and one of the most trusted claims comes from Jon Lewis

:40:46.:40:48.

who say that they are never knowingly undersold. It's not always

:40:49.:40:55.

quite that simple. John Lewis claims to have guests everyone will love,

:40:56.:40:59.

including the star of its Christmas ad, Buster the boxer dog, but when

:41:00.:41:04.

it comes to pricing, not all its customers are jumping for joy.

:41:05.:41:11.

It's all down to John Lewis' pledge to be Never Knowingly Undersold.

:41:12.:41:14.

It says it has a "dedicated price-monitoring

:41:15.:41:16.

team" who "proactively check the prices of branded products"

:41:17.:41:19.

at high street competitors "every day, including online and

:41:20.:41:21.

John Lewis says it doesn't "expect you to find a lower

:41:22.:41:26.

price elsewhere" but, if you do, you can request a price match.

:41:27.:41:31.

Well, not according to Alistair Freegard, from West Yorkshire.

:41:32.:41:35.

When he was after some Christmas presents on Black Friday,

:41:36.:41:38.

he was sure John Lewis would give him the best possible deal.

:41:39.:41:41.

After all, right underneath the product he wanted

:41:42.:41:43.

was its promise to Never Knowingly be Undersold - even during sales.

:41:44.:41:47.

I guess I do trust John Lewis because of their Never Knowingly

:41:48.:41:50.

Undersold - that I do believe that they've gone out, found the best

:41:51.:41:53.

prices and of course are giving that to the consumer - me.

:41:54.:42:01.

But Alistair spotted that the iPod was available

:42:02.:42:03.

So he immediately requested a price match from John Lewis.

:42:04.:42:11.

It took John Lewis 12 hours to respond to Alistair -

:42:12.:42:14.

and to his amazement - his price match was refused.

:42:15.:42:19.

When I got the response from John Lewis I was a little bit surprised.

:42:20.:42:23.

I honestly thought that they would probably respond by saying: "Thank

:42:24.:42:25.

What we can now do is change our website, change our pricing

:42:26.:42:31.

However, the response actually was because Currys now had sold out

:42:32.:42:36.

they weren't prepared to price match.

:42:37.:42:39.

I think my frustration with the John Lewis response

:42:40.:42:45.

was that if somebody had been selling that product cheaper

:42:46.:42:49.

John Lewis almost ought to kick themselves and say they messed up.

:42:50.:42:56.

In practice, then, it seems that on one of the most competitive

:42:57.:43:00.

shopping days of the year - John Lewis hadn't made sure

:43:01.:43:03.

it was matching the price of one of its biggest electronics

:43:04.:43:06.

And even when it was told about it, refused to price match.

:43:07.:43:11.

But at least when John Lewis is told one of its products cheaper

:43:12.:43:14.

elsewhere - and in stock - it adjusts its price accordingly

:43:15.:43:17.

to make sure it is not "Knowingly Undersold".

:43:18.:43:20.

Not so says David Rawle, from London.

:43:21.:43:26.

Back in January he noticed that a pair of headphones advertised

:43:27.:43:29.

in John Lewis were ?16 cheaper in Richer Sounds.

:43:30.:43:33.

So now they knew they were undersold.

:43:34.:43:38.

But did they change their price in store?

:43:39.:43:40.

I thought if they found something cheaper somewhere else they should

:43:41.:43:51.

The reason why John Lewis only lowered the price for David can be

:43:52.:43:54.

In David's case, John Lewis claimed Richer Sounds did not

:43:55.:43:58.

meet their strict criteria of a national "high street

:43:59.:44:01.

competitor" because its prices can differ across its shops and website.

:44:02.:44:04.

I called a few Richer Sounds to find out if their prices were different.

:44:05.:44:08.

And every single store that I tried were ?74.

:44:09.:44:11.

I understand that John Lewis can't check thousands of retailers

:44:12.:44:14.

so they only can have the slogan Never Knowingly Undersold

:44:15.:44:17.

And they knew about it for quite a long time

:44:18.:44:24.

So when it comes to those last minute gifts - rely too heavily

:44:25.:44:32.

on the John Lewis Price Promise - and you may end up a bit

:44:33.:44:36.

John Lewis said it was in the process of price matching the iPod

:44:37.:44:52.

when Alistair Freegard e-mailed and it did reduce the price 20 minutes

:44:53.:44:55.

after he got in touch and will now provide his price match request. It

:44:56.:45:03.

said it honoured the price in David Rawle's request that it could not do

:45:04.:45:08.

it nationally. It says it checks the price of tens of thousands of

:45:09.:45:11.

products every day and will redouble its efforts to make its pricing

:45:12.:45:15.

policy even clearer. Now, Steph, what other stories have

:45:16.:45:21.

the team being looked into this week? We have had loads of messages

:45:22.:45:28.

on Twitter. Lots of people talking about delivery is going wrong so

:45:29.:45:32.

let's have a look at some of them. One of them is Michaela. This is a

:45:33.:45:37.

bit of a shocker of a story. Michaela ordered a picture frame and

:45:38.:45:48.

some kids paints to make prints of her baby's feat as Christmas

:45:49.:45:50.

presents for the family. That is a lovely picture there. She bought

:45:51.:45:52.

them from Amazon but rather than deliver them to her front door, she

:45:53.:45:55.

came home to find the parcel spread across the garden and this is why.

:45:56.:46:03.

Can you believe that? Let's have a look in slow motion. The delivery

:46:04.:46:09.

person has clearly just lobbed it in the garden, nearly hitting the cat.

:46:10.:46:15.

Thankfully, the cat is all right. Michaela did complain to Amazon who

:46:16.:46:19.

replaced the paints and gave her free next day delivery on a future

:46:20.:46:23.

order. We got in touch with Amazon who said it investigated and ensured

:46:24.:46:29.

the independent delivery provider resolved the issue to the customer's

:46:30.:46:34.

satisfaction. The good news is Michaela and Leighton managed to

:46:35.:46:38.

make their picture for their family as well.

:46:39.:46:45.

Next up, another story from Michelle. She contacted us after she

:46:46.:46:58.

bought to Hatchimals items from Argos. Sooner is Michelle paid ?120

:46:59.:47:05.

for the two toys, she got an e-mail from Argos saying they were out of

:47:06.:47:08.

stock. She was told she would get her money back straightaway but she

:47:09.:47:12.

did not. Michelle complained to Argos and they offered her the

:47:13.:47:18.

chance to buy two more at a discount but she did not want to pay any more

:47:19.:47:22.

money until she got the original ?120 back. We got in touch with

:47:23.:47:27.

Argos who said a technical error meant and out of stock item was

:47:28.:47:31.

displayed as available. It said it was rare and they got in touch with

:47:32.:47:38.

Michelle and are racist link to refund -- they got in touch with

:47:39.:47:45.

Michelle and our processing her refund. They also sent two more

:47:46.:47:54.

Hatchimals. Now I have to do this. Contact us through Facebook, BBC

:47:55.:48:02.

Watchdog and Twitter and have a cracking Christmas.

:48:03.:48:14.

Back to our investigation of what to look for if you are buying a puppy.

:48:15.:48:22.

Kevin Knox of County Durham appears to be running a credible operation.

:48:23.:48:26.

His premises look clean and he seems to know his stuff. But we have found

:48:27.:48:31.

many dogs are afraid of people and we have not got to the bottom of why

:48:32.:48:35.

so many animals are sick and dying, yet.

:48:36.:48:41.

In the last six years we know of 52 dogs that suffered serious illness

:48:42.:48:44.

and 11 that died soon after leaving Ivy Leaf kennels.

:48:45.:48:47.

The kennels have appeared in the press many times.

:48:48.:48:49.

And all the stories tell a similar tale.

:48:50.:48:51.

After all, the first impression is of a clean

:48:52.:48:56.

Expert vet Simon Thomas, who came with us to buy Beasley,

:48:57.:48:59.

There was no facilities to clean our hands on arrival,

:49:00.:49:03.

no questions about where we might have been, so those were things

:49:04.:49:06.

And there are more clues of the source of the problems

:49:07.:49:11.

from videos of puppies for sale that Kevin Knox

:49:12.:49:13.

This is a video of a litter of cavachon puppies

:49:14.:49:18.

These puppies are around eight weeks old, yet Kevin had assured us

:49:19.:49:23.

when we visited that all puppy litters were kept separate in their

:49:24.:49:26.

These very young puppies will then be susceptible to germs that they've

:49:27.:49:33.

never met and that's when you get an increased risk of disease.

:49:34.:49:38.

This video shows some cocker spaniel puppies playing in the yard

:49:39.:49:40.

But it's rough ground, next to a sewage pipe, and some broken paving.

:49:41.:49:51.

It really is not going to be possible to properly disinfect

:49:52.:49:55.

an area like that between groups of puppies and even the concrete I'd

:49:56.:50:01.

And if you've got a carry over of germs between one group

:50:02.:50:04.

of puppies and another that comes in, the germs will just

:50:05.:50:07.

Germs that could include as roundworm, the parasite giardia,

:50:08.:50:11.

and the bacteria Campylobacta which causes food poisoning

:50:12.:50:13.

They would also be at risk from parvo virus if any

:50:14.:50:22.

I mean, parvo virus is highly infectious so that would also

:50:23.:50:26.

We know of seven dogs that have left Ivy Leaf Kennels with parvo virus,

:50:27.:50:39.

So we have seen examples of poor care which could explain the high

:50:40.:50:44.

levels of sickness and death in puppies bought from Kevin Knox.

:50:45.:50:47.

Instances of infection probably can never be completely ruled out

:50:48.:50:53.

but they should be very rare and it should be avoidable.

:50:54.:50:55.

There are many things Kevin Knox could be doing to prevent this

:50:56.:51:00.

spread of infection and improve the wellbeing of these puppies

:51:01.:51:02.

So, we wrote to him, suggesting where he was going wrong.

:51:03.:51:07.

"Kevin Knox refutes the allegation that the puppies are badly

:51:08.:51:13.

socialized and fearful around humans.

:51:14.:51:18.

Really? Kevin Knox also refutes the suggestion that he does nothing

:51:19.:51:21.

to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,

:51:22.:51:24.

and whilst he may possibly accept that a very small proportion

:51:25.:51:27.

of his yard might be susceptible to contamination, he doesn't accept

:51:28.:51:31.

that the area is a health risk to the dogs.

:51:32.:51:35.

Kevin Knox says he's going to repair the broken area.

:51:36.:51:46.

And that he's now going to provide soft bedding and toys.

:51:47.:51:48.

But he refutes our allegation that he has repeatedly sold

:51:49.:52:05.

So, over the last six years, selling 52 puppies that

:52:06.:52:07.

and 11 that have died shortly after leaving his care over

:52:08.:52:11.

six years is not repeatedly selling sick or dying puppies?

:52:12.:52:13.

But there's one line here that I'm struggling with.

:52:14.:52:21.

"Our client accepts sometimes puppies die."

:52:22.:52:23.

Well, we don't accept that and we don't think you accept that

:52:24.:52:26.

to Kevin Knox's house to remind him what time of year it is.

:52:27.:52:30.

It's the busiest time of year for the puppy trade.

:52:31.:52:44.

This is much better. This is what you want.

:52:45.:52:55.

It's looking nice. Looking Christmassy. Never used to be able

:52:56.:53:04.

to get these. They are amazing. They make a real splash. Come on!

:53:05.:53:16.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a puppy New Year. Merry Christmas!

:53:17.:53:20.

Merry Christmas. Well done. Seriously,

:53:21.:53:24.

don't be part of the puppy Kevin Knox told us the premises were

:53:25.:53:42.

inspected every year and a great deal of care was taken regarding

:53:43.:53:47.

hygiene and sanitation, the pens were regularly power washed and

:53:48.:53:53.

rinsed with a DEFRA improved disinfected. The allegations that

:53:54.:53:59.

yuppies were fearful around humans was refuted. Everything is done to

:54:00.:54:02.

ensure poppies were handled and socialised as much as possible

:54:03.:54:07.

within the confines of the kennel -- the puppies. Kevin Thomas said if

:54:08.:54:15.

you want to buy a puppy, the message is simple, by a puppy aged over

:54:16.:54:21.

eight weeks, see the puppy with its mum, buy from a registered dealer

:54:22.:54:28.

and if you're not happy walk away. There are plenty of dogs in rescue

:54:29.:54:32.

centres looking for good homes. They will have been checked by a vet

:54:33.:54:36.

before coming to you and there is even more advice on our website.

:54:37.:54:44.

Earlier in the series the Patel family told of their love of fixing

:54:45.:54:48.

household appliances instead of throwing them away. How often do you

:54:49.:54:55.

fix things? Every week. It is how we are brought up to repair things, not

:54:56.:55:01.

throw them away. You gave us some great fixing tips, remind us what

:55:02.:55:07.

they were. One of them was to always keep the manuals and if you have

:55:08.:55:11.

lost it have a look online. Keep the warranties. If it is coming to the

:55:12.:55:16.

end of the warranty, maybe you can get an extended warranty or

:55:17.:55:20.

sometimes free parts are offered by the manufacturer. And most

:55:21.:55:23.

importantly, maintaining the appliances. Always follow the

:55:24.:55:28.

manufacturer's recommended guidelines. Time for another taste

:55:29.:55:33.

test. Christmas is not complete without the Christmas pudding. Which

:55:34.:55:39.

one is best? You guys love Christmas pudding? Which one did you go for?

:55:40.:55:48.

We both went for B. The flavour was great, great spices. Funnily enough

:55:49.:55:53.

there was less sugar. You felt it was not as sweet as the others?

:55:54.:55:57.

Let's have a look at which one it was. So it was the Lidl on. It is

:55:58.:56:09.

75p per portion for that one. You said it was not a sweet but that was

:56:10.:56:13.

not the one with the least sugar in which is interesting. Let's have a

:56:14.:56:21.

look at the others. We have Aldi which is 87 pence a portion and then

:56:22.:56:27.

Iceland which is ?1 portion so you went to the one in the middle. Thank

:56:28.:56:33.

you both very much and thank you to all of team Watchdog for their help

:56:34.:56:39.

in this series. If you want to join Team Watchdog then the details are

:56:40.:56:42.

on our website. Last week on Rogue Traders we

investigated Euxton and the -- we would like to make clear that the

association and has never had any association with Euxton motor can be

Watch and learn. OK, here we go. Anyone have a clue?
