In September 2016, thousands of people made the journey to

0:00:020:00:05

a small patch of the North Wales coast for three days of music

0:00:050:00:09

and, as it turned out, mud - lots of it.

0:00:090:00:12

This is Portmeirion.

0:00:130:00:15

This is Festival Number 6 and this is Wales Unsigned.

0:00:150:00:19

# I'll always remember

0:00:190:00:23

# The summer in December... #

0:00:230:00:26

Questions are being asked tonight about how hundreds of motorists

0:00:260:00:29

became stranded in a flooded field at Festival Number 6 in Portmeirion.

0:00:290:00:33

In 2016, the festival got more publicity than it probably wanted,

0:00:330:00:38

but on the first day, as the happy campers arrived on site,

0:00:380:00:41

the sun was out and we had a job to do.

0:00:410:00:43

We're following 12 Welsh artists and bands as they perform their way

0:00:430:00:47

to fame and maybe even fortune.

0:00:470:00:50

# The west coast sun where we came from... #

0:00:500:00:54

I'm Heledd Watkins - that's me right there - and this is my second year

0:00:540:00:58

at Festival Number 6 with my band HMS Morris.

0:00:580:01:01

Last year, we were part of the Horizons project

0:01:010:01:04

and performed all over the UK.

0:01:040:01:06

This year, there are 12 more unsigned Welsh acts.

0:01:060:01:09

They're ambitious, they're talented and they're single-minded

0:01:090:01:13

and they all want to make it in the music business

0:01:130:01:15

and if you want to get noticed and make a little bit of money,

0:01:150:01:18

that usually means playing at gigs and festivals

0:01:180:01:21

just like this one.

0:01:210:01:23

The first of our bands performing at the village green in Portmeirion

0:01:250:01:29

on Friday afternoon are Cardiff four-piece Tibet.

0:01:290:01:31

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:01:310:01:34

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:01:340:01:37

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:01:370:01:39

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:01:390:01:42

# There is a place in my brain

0:01:420:01:47

# Where I stay every day

0:01:470:01:51

# When it's hard, get away

0:01:510:01:55

# Now I know, here we are

0:01:550:01:58

# In the world, not in space

0:01:580:02:02

# There's no fear in my place

0:02:020:02:06

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:02:060:02:09

# Ah-ah-ah

0:02:090:02:10

# And I'm fading away

0:02:100:02:13

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:02:130:02:15

# Ah-ah-ah, and I'm fading away

0:02:150:02:17

# Thoughts come and go

0:02:170:02:20

# In a way, do they know

0:02:200:02:24

# What it is that makes me

0:02:240:02:27

# Overflow?

0:02:270:02:29

# In my place, there are walls

0:02:290:02:33

# Made of stone, but it's me

0:02:330:02:36

# Who attacks and overflows

0:02:360:02:39

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:02:390:02:42

# Ah-ah-ah

0:02:420:02:43

# And I'm fading away

0:02:430:02:45

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:02:450:02:47

# Ah-ah-ah

0:02:470:02:49

# And I'm fading away

0:02:490:02:51

# Something's coming into my place

0:02:540:02:57

# I think it's bothering me

0:02:570:02:59

# Something's coming into my place

0:02:590:03:02

# I think it's bothering me

0:03:020:03:05

# Something's coming into my place

0:03:050:03:07

# I think it's bothering me

0:03:070:03:10

# Something's coming into my place

0:03:100:03:13

# I think it's bothering me

0:03:130:03:15

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:03:300:03:33

# Ah-ah-ah

0:03:330:03:34

# I'm fading away

0:03:340:03:36

# Ah-ah-ah-ah

0:03:360:03:38

# Ah-ah-ah

0:03:380:03:39

# And I'm fading away-ay-ay-ay. #

0:03:390:03:46

CHEERING

0:03:480:03:50

Also filmed while the weather was behaving itself,

0:03:530:03:55

this is a live acoustic track from Anglesey's Connah Evans.

0:03:550:03:59

# I thought that I could be without your smile

0:04:010:04:06

# I thought that I could live that way for a while

0:04:070:04:13

# But all I want to know

0:04:130:04:15

# Is if I come straight back home

0:04:150:04:18

# Would you be there waiting for me?

0:04:180:04:22

# All I want to know

0:04:240:04:26

# Is if I don't go down that road

0:04:260:04:29

# Would you be there waiting for me?

0:04:290:04:33

# Cos I just hope that time has healed us

0:04:350:04:41

# Drinking Monday mornings to feel love

0:04:410:04:46

# But now you wake and you're not by my side

0:04:460:04:52

# It makes me feel like I'm out of life

0:04:530:04:57

# Like I'm out of life

0:05:000:05:03

# Every time I think of you

0:05:080:05:10

# There's something that I wanted to

0:05:100:05:13

# Just tell you now

0:05:130:05:17

# I can't even remember how

0:05:180:05:21

# This all started, but from now

0:05:210:05:24

# It's all for you

0:05:240:05:27

# Cos I just hope that time has healed us

0:05:290:05:34

# Drinking Monday mornings to feel love

0:05:340:05:40

# But now you wake and you're not by my side

0:05:400:05:45

# It makes me feel like I'm out of life

0:05:470:05:51

# Like I'm out of life

0:05:540:05:57

# Oooh-oooh-oooh

0:06:010:06:07

# Oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh. #

0:06:070:06:14

Portmeirion has a way of bringing you under its spell

0:06:160:06:19

and the village could have been made to host a festival.

0:06:190:06:22

It's a platform for the big names as well as a place

0:06:240:06:27

to discover new acts on their way up

0:06:270:06:29

and you also come across music you wouldn't expect

0:06:290:06:32

at a standard pop festival.

0:06:320:06:34

CHORAL RENDITION OF "You'll Never Walk Alone"

0:06:340:06:37

This festival just gets bigger and so far better every year.

0:06:370:06:40

This is one of the nightly highlights

0:06:400:06:42

as the Brythoniaid Male Voice Choir takes the stage here on the piazza

0:06:420:06:46

right in the centre of Portmeirion.

0:06:460:06:49

# And you'll never walk alone

0:06:490:06:58

# You'll never walk

0:06:580:07:06

# Alone. #

0:07:060:07:13

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:130:07:16

JAZZY MUSIC

0:07:180:07:20

And a torch-lit parade

0:07:200:07:21

leads everyone out of the village for the night.

0:07:210:07:24

Well, everyone except us and a very talented singer-songwriter.

0:07:240:07:29

Tell us a little bit about the song that we're hearing from you today.

0:07:290:07:32

Fly came about from my illustration,

0:07:320:07:36

beautiful illustration

0:07:360:07:37

of a bowerbird I had done

0:07:370:07:39

for my last single, called Anywhere Is Home.

0:07:390:07:42

The song sort of describes a bird

0:07:420:07:46

and that bird you could say is myself.

0:07:460:07:48

And, um, it's just about also being a musician as well,

0:07:480:07:53

how you've just got to keep at it, you know,

0:07:530:07:55

and if it doesn't work out where you are now,

0:07:550:07:58

you know, fly, or go to another place,

0:07:580:08:01

and just keep at it and keep positive, yeah.

0:08:010:08:05

# Home

0:08:050:08:08

# Nobody knows

0:08:080:08:13

# We float

0:08:140:08:18

# Wherever we go

0:08:180:08:22

# Don't run for us

0:08:240:08:30

# Don't look up

0:08:320:08:38

# Just wait for us

0:08:410:08:49

# I'll fly

0:08:550:09:03

# Till I find another sky

0:09:030:09:11

# I'll fly

0:09:110:09:15

# We roam

0:09:200:09:23

# And rise with the sun

0:09:230:09:27

# Heavy hearts

0:09:270:09:31

# And wake up alone

0:09:310:09:34

# And the breeze won't leave

0:09:360:09:42

# Through the rain, I'll see

0:09:440:09:50

# Just wait for me

0:09:530:10:00

# Wait

0:10:010:10:05

# I'll fly

0:10:060:10:14

# Till I find another sky

0:10:140:10:23

# I'll fly

0:10:230:10:28

# Remember these wings

0:10:310:10:34

# I'll fly high

0:10:340:10:41

# Let this river

0:10:470:10:51

# Lead us where we'll lay

0:10:510:10:57

# The tide will take me

0:10:590:11:03

# Hold me so I stay

0:11:030:11:09

# It's almost day

0:11:100:11:15

# I'll fly

0:11:170:11:24

# Till I find another sky

0:11:240:11:33

# I'll fly

0:11:330:11:40

# Remember these wings

0:11:410:11:45

# I'll fly. #

0:11:450:11:53

Urgh, the joys of festival-going. Friday was lovely. Saturday...

0:12:120:12:18

not so much.

0:12:180:12:19

It looks pretty bad.

0:12:190:12:21

It is bad.

0:12:210:12:22

But let's just get back out there, shall we?

0:12:220:12:24

This is proper rain.

0:12:260:12:27

We thought the whole day might be a complete write-off,

0:12:270:12:30

but our musicians are made of stronger stuff

0:12:300:12:33

and here's our next unsigned Welsh act performing to, well,

0:12:330:12:36

a smaller audience than they deserved. This is Roughion.

0:12:360:12:40

How's it going, you all right?

0:12:400:12:41

Waaaay!

0:12:410:12:43

We're Roughion, we are based in Cardiff

0:12:430:12:46

and we do live electronic music,

0:12:460:12:48

so we are going to invite... Oh, she's already on the stage!

0:12:480:12:52

This is Lois Shenton and this is our debut single Ti And Me.

0:12:520:12:57

# Can we go back

0:13:200:13:23

# Back to a simpler time?

0:13:240:13:29

# Or can we travel through

0:13:350:13:40

# Travel through to an alternate universe?

0:13:400:13:47

# Where no-one knows our faces

0:13:500:13:54

# And no-one knows our place

0:13:540:14:00

# I don't have peace of mind

0:14:210:14:25

# The only peace of mind

0:14:250:14:29

# Is when I see you

0:14:290:14:34

# I want to let go

0:14:360:14:40

# But I can feel your soul

0:14:420:14:47

# From here

0:14:470:14:50

# It's you that haunts my sleep

0:14:510:14:56

# There's secrets I can't keep any more

0:14:570:15:05

# I can't have peace of mind

0:15:230:15:26

# The only peace of mind

0:15:260:15:30

# Is when I'll be with you. #

0:15:300:15:37

Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:15:390:15:42

CHEERING

0:15:420:15:45

On this very wet and windy Saturday afternoon,

0:15:520:15:55

let's head over to the Clough Stage here at Festival Number 6.

0:15:550:15:58

This band's from Denbighshire and they're called Anelog.

-Diolch, thank you.

-CHEERING

0:18:130:18:15

-Thank you very much.

-Thanks.

0:18:150:18:16

A bonus track now from one of our unsigned bands who didn't

0:18:160:18:19

make it to Festival Number 6, but they did make it to

0:18:190:18:22

the BBC studios at Maida Vale where our next programme is based.

0:18:220:18:27

This is Newport band Casey.

0:18:270:18:29

# I know I promised not to call

0:18:290:18:32

# But I left so much unsaid

0:18:320:18:34

# And you barely said a word at all

0:18:340:18:37

# But I knew exactly how you felt

0:18:370:18:41

# How fast did we decay?

0:18:430:18:45

# Cos I remember falling into love

0:18:450:18:49

# But never out again

0:18:490:18:51

# It felt like one day I woke up

0:18:510:18:54

# And we weren't there

0:18:540:18:56

# We'd lay our bones in the same bed at night

0:18:560:19:00

# But our love had disappeared

0:19:000:19:05

# Sink beneath the bed sheets

0:19:050:19:08

# Drowning in the thought of us

0:19:080:19:11

# A bloodless vessel, empty

0:19:110:19:14

# Toothless, I've been thinking of a way to let you know

0:19:140:19:19

# Hell is loving you in my sleep

0:19:190:19:22

# And waking up alone

0:19:240:19:25

# I guess I just couldn't bring myself to face the fact that maybe

0:19:250:19:28

# We were never what I wanted us to be

0:19:280:19:30

# Maybe the love that we had made was not the beautiful home

0:19:300:19:33

# I always imagined that we would build

0:19:330:19:35

# Because you were the light of my life

0:19:350:19:37

# But no matter how brightly you shone

0:19:370:19:39

# The shadow you cast was never dark enough to cancel out the glare

0:19:390:19:42

# I should have left sooner

0:19:420:19:44

# Maybe you were never there

0:19:450:19:49

# You never saw it as us

0:19:500:19:52

# Only ever you and me

0:19:520:19:56

# You were the blood in my veins

0:19:560:19:58

# You only came to watch me bleed

0:19:580:20:01

# Our love set me on fire and you stood and watched me burn

0:20:010:20:07

# You told me once you couldn't love me but I guess I'll never learn

0:20:070:20:15

# You told me once you couldn't love me

0:20:280:20:31

# Like it will go on

0:20:310:20:36

# I sink beneath the bed sheets

0:20:360:20:39

# Drowning in the thought of us

0:20:390:20:41

# A bloodless vessel, empty

0:20:410:20:44

# Toothless, I've been thinking of a way to let you know

0:20:440:20:49

# Hell is loving you in my sleep and waking up alone. #

0:20:490:20:59

That was Casey at the BBC Maida Vale Studios.

0:21:060:21:10

And now back to Festival Number 6.

0:21:100:21:14

It's the morning after a very, very wet day before

0:21:150:21:20

and this is the result.

0:21:200:21:23

And so I managed to squelch my way to somewhere a bit less muddy

0:21:260:21:30

and caught up with Rhys and Sion from our next unsigned Welsh band.

0:21:300:21:35

I'm not one to judge, but I think your choice of footwear for

0:21:350:21:39

this event is a little bit inappropriate.

0:21:390:21:41

What have you got to say for yourselves?

0:21:410:21:43

These are the shoes I wear to play drums

0:21:430:21:46

so I can't be playing drums in wellingtons,

0:21:460:21:49

you know. So...

0:21:490:21:50

Yeah, well, my wellingtons were a bit out of shape.

0:21:500:21:54

I've been with the sheep

0:21:540:21:55

so we don't want any of that stuff on the pedals.

0:21:550:21:59

-You could imagine.

-Yeah, I can imagine.

0:21:590:22:02

I'd get very angry if there was sheep dung all over my pedals.

0:22:020:22:06

Sheep dung, that's a very nice way of putting it, isn't it?

0:22:060:22:09

So tell us a bit about the song Digon that we're hearing today.

0:22:130:22:16

It's a song on our EP, Translated Enough.

0:22:160:22:19

So, I don't know what's it about, though?

0:22:190:22:23

It's quite a beast kind of thing so, yeah,

0:22:230:22:25

let the audience think what it's about.

0:22:250:22:28

0:23:410:23:44

What a weekend. One I definitely won't forget in a hurry.

0:24:580:25:02

A few last thoughts from me before a brilliant final song.

0:25:020:25:08

I've had a fantastic time here in Portmeirion.

0:25:080:25:10

I've been performing,

0:25:100:25:11
