-Tonight's third item sees Steff

-looking at global warming...

-..which is about the familiar term

-to us all.

-Global warming.

-This term has been repeated over

-and over again for 50 years...

-..but the temperature of the planet

-is still rising...

-..with 2016 set to the hottest year

-to date, beating 2014 and 2015.

-The problem is our transport -

-the boats, planes, trains and cars.

-There's the way we produce food

-and build our towns and cities.

-Almost everything

-we do releases carbon dioxide...

-..which leads to global warming.

-Ice lakes are melting

-and sea levels are rising.

-There's more extreme weather

-in terms of flooding and drought.

-It's like a horror film in terms of

-flooding and drought.

-The glaciers on our mountain ranges

-are also suffering...

-..none more so than the Himalayas.

-A lot of people think that glaciers

-are white, clean and flat...

-..but the glacier at Khumbu is

-uneven, full of pools and very dark.

-It's an important factor

-in global warming.

-One of the unique features

-about the glacier in Khumbu...

-..is that it has a layer of waste

-on its surface such as rocks.

-The way in which these influence

-the melting of the glacier...

-..can effect the speed

-of its melting.

-A thick layer can obstruct

-the melting process.

-A dark layer means that fewer

-of the sun's rays are reflected...

-..which can quicken

-the melting process.

-The glacier at Khumbu is getting

-thinner as opposed to shrinking.

-The estimation of the Centre

-of Glaciology in Aberystwyth...

-..is terms of the speed

-of the melting...

-..is about 8,000 swimming pools

-of water a year.

-The future is set to be warmer

-as a result of global warming...

-..so it's likely that the speed

-of the melting will continue.

-However, the pattern of melting

-and shrinking of glaciers...

-..isn't common across the Himalayas.

-Some of the other glaciers

-follow another pattern.

-We don't know what will be

-the pattern of the future...

-..but I suspect that many of the

-glaciers will continue to melt.

-It's tragic to see this massive,

-powerful body of ice...

-..that contributes to the lives

-of so many people...

-..dying out year upon year.
