-is growing Christmas trees...

-..that are perfect for any home!

-The Tidy Wales Awards

-is an annual event...

-..that honours schools,

-..who are committed to preserving

-the environment in Wales.

-I've hosted the event for many years

-and this year was just as great.

-Rhodri joined the celebrations

-at the Pierhead in Cardiff Bay.

-The Tidy Wales Awards is celebrating

-its 25th anniversary.

-That's half a century of

-volunteering on behalf of Wales.

-Tonight aims to celebrate

-the efforts of those volunteers.

-These awards aim to thank all those

-who give their time freely...

-..and do some incredible work

-in their communities across Wales.

-Individuals, companies and groups

-are praised for their hard work.

-From the River Taf to Llandudno and

-from Blaenau Gwent to Ffestiniog.

-There were nominees from all

-of Wales and all were honoured...

-..including the team

-of Y Dref Werdd.

-It's an honour to represent

-our corner of Wales in Ffestiniog.

-The concept of a community

-working together is incredible.

-It's quite rare these days but

-there are still people out there...

-..who want to preserve their

-communities and the environment.

-It's an important day

-for our business.

-We're honoured to have been

-short-listed for these awards.

-We're a five-star business but are

-green and don't skimp on anything.

-The volunteers give over 100,000

-hours of hard work every year.

-That's an amazing contribution.

-We do about two hours a week

-but I haven't calculated it.

-We keep the station neat

-by weeding and picking up litter...

-..so that the site looks attractive

-and we really enjoy it.

-We've retired so want to use

-the spare time effectively.

-People want to give their time.

-They are not always thanked

-but today is about thanking them.

-You can see what it means for them

-to have this recognition.

-Yes, and people have come from

-across Wales to get their awards.

-This isn't just for Cardiff

-but for the whole of Wales.

-The awards weren't the only thing

-to celebrate 25 years.

-A very familiar face is happy

-to give her time freely every year.

-I can't believe it but I've been

-part of the event for 25 years.

-Over 25 years, you meet thousands of

-people who make such a difference...

-..by only using their hands!

-It's difficult and can be horrible

-and dirty but it's very important.

-This event rewards those who make

-a difference in the world around us.

-Congratulations to all the winners

-and to everyone who has worked hard.

-But what's the story

-behind this humble tree?

-Despite yesterday's rough weather,

-Gerallt was in the Llangollen area.

-He meet a family who are very busy

-at this time of year.

-Penlan Farm near Llangollen

-is 1,000 feet above sea level.

-Man and beast are glad of shelter

-in weather like we had yesterday.

-As well as raising cattle,

-they also grow Christmas trees.

-..to produce one for your home.

-How do you get the trees in this

-kind of condition for the customer?

-We buy them as plants

-which are "two plus two".

-They have been moved twice, lifted

-I buy them

-when they're "two plus two".

-We plant them

-After that, we shape them.

-When this was cut down,

-there was a branch just there.

-We cut the highest branches

-in the spring.

-It prevents

-them from getting too wide.

-Housewives don't want wide ones.

-They want thin, bushy ones

-with plenty of branches.

-This tree has taken eight

-or nine years to grow.

-There are more than Christmas trees.

-Every branch and even every needle

-is used.

-Yes, everything.

-We use Noble tree for the wreaths.

-It's a good description because when

-they're fully grown, they are noble.

-These are four of the most common

-Christmas trees.

-Yes, there's Lodgepole Pine

-and the Frazer Fir,

-This is the old favourite.

-This is the old favourite.

-Yes, it's the Norway spruce.

-It sheds its needles in the warmth

-of the house so is less popular now.

-This is now the queen of every home

-at Christmas.

-Why is it so popular

-and what's it called?

-It's the Nordmann, Nordmanniana,

-or as we call them, Nords.

-They don't shed their needles.

-How do we ensure it lasts over

-Christmas when we take them home?

-Don't put it in too early.

-If you've already bought one,

-keep it outside until it's needed.

-If possible, don't place it

-near the fire or next to a radiator.

-Keep it in water having cut

-half an inch from the bottom.

-It's a real family business...

-..but Ffion is still a bit too young

-to get involved!

-Yes, a little bit!

-The others are my parents-in-law,

-..and my sister-in-law.

-I do my best to do that.

-It gives young people confidence and
