-..for the book launch

-of the famous, Carwyn James.

-Rhodri Gomer is there for us.

-He's got a lot in common with this

-native from the Gwendraeth Valley.

-Good evening, Rhodri.

-Good evening, Elin.

-Carwyn passed away

-on the 10 January 1983...

-..which was the day before my birth.

-He also taught my father Welsh at

-Llandovery college in the 1960s.

-And in the 1990s, I won the Carwyn

-James Scholarship to Llandovery.

-Both of us also played for Llanelli.

-Most people remember Carwyn

-as a rugby player and coach.

-Over the past three years, the

-author of the book, Alun Gibbard...

-..has discovered there were many

-sides to the Cwm Gwendraeth hero.

-The title of the book is Yn Erbyn

-y Gwynt or Against the Wind.

-On one level, you play rugby

-with or against the wind.

-In Carwyn's life there were a few

-crosswinds blowing in his face.

-There are different elements to the

-wind which is blowing into his face.

-He was a man of many layers.

-It's incredible that he was an

-expert in so many fields.

-He loved and studied

-Welsh literature.

-He was also a politician.

-He stood for Plaid Cymru

-here in Llanelli in 1970.

-He got over 8,500 votes and that was

-before he coached the Lions.

-He would have got more

-if he'd stood again afterwards.

-He had been in the navy

-on national service...

-..after graduating

-from Aberystwyth.

-People often joked that he was the

-only navy man to never go to sea.

-It became obvious during my research

-that it wasn't true.

-He did go to sea and joined a unit

-for speakers of foreign languages.

-In his case,

-they spied on the Russians.

-A remarkable man without compare to

-anyone who is around today.

-He had so many interests

-and areas of expertise.

-As you've been writing the biography

-over the past two or three years...

-..have you got to know Carwyn?

-I think I have managed to

-understand and appreciate Carwyn...

-..in all his complexities.

-Seeing his genius and tortured soul

-side by side was fascinating...

-..as was learning more

-about a man I thought I knew.

-Not many really knew him.

-I'm joined by Bethan Cox,

-the niece of Carwyn Roberts.

-Another of Carwyn's nieces,

-Non Roberts, is also here.

-Nobody knew him as well

-as his family.

-What do you remember of Carwyn?

-I remember Uncle Carwyn,

-when I was a young child.

-I would see him

-in his red tracksuit...

-children to play rugby.

-You have helped with the research.

-I'm delighted with the book.

-of Carwyn.

-Carwyn knew so much about rugby and

-cricket.

-Religion was also important to him.

-There are many people here this

-evening for the launch.

-He was so popular.

-You knew Carwyn well, Delme.

-Describe him.

-I was lucky to know him and to be

-coached by him.

-We were on the Lions Tour in New

-Zealand in 1971.

-He is the only British coach to win

-in New Zealand.

-He was a wonderful man.

-The book is available from Lolfa.

-We lobby the government.

-Dyfodol i'r Iaith lobbies the

-education sector and councils...

-..to put the Welsh language at the

-We want things to continue.

-Some people don't leave things go

-and we want success.

-The Welsh language centres

-have been a great success...

-..and we hope to open more across

-Wales.

-The Welsh language

-is central to the decision...

-..if new homes are needed in areas.

-We work with Cymdeithas yr Iaith.

-We want to stand together.

-Thousands of houses

-..but no Welsh speakers

-will live there.

-We want the language to be

-considered in these decisions.

-Christmas has become

-too commercialized.

-Many claim that Christmas has

-changed.

-We want to make a difference

-this Christmas.

-Why don't we give

-Money is needed to help promote the

-language.

-We only have two part time workers.

-We want people

-to give the language a gift...

-..by donating money.

-If someone doesn't want

-to buy a gift...

-..then why not give money to

-something that is important to us.

-A group of Japanese people came to

-Wales recently...

-..and they enjoyed in Conwy,

-due to the Welsh language.

-Wales is different because of the

-language.

-We need to give the Welsh language a

-Christmas gift.

-since you released Tombola.

-Gerallt, that is a good question.

-I hope people think it was a good

-idea after they listen to the CD.

-I haven't been idle, I've been

-singing in concerts and gigs.

-week since releasing this new CD.

-I had two launches.

-One was a concert at Clwb Canol Dre

-It was a great night

-with a decent crowd.

-On the Sunday, I had a sea voyage

-for the official launch.

-It was on the Queen of the Sea,

-a boat from the quay in Caernarfon.

-It was a great experience and

-we were lucky with the weather.

-It's not easy to sing new songs.

-You know the old ones so well

-that new songs can make you nervous.

-I think it went well.

-What have you been up to since?

-Apart from singing, I work

-as a director and producer.

-Recently, I did some presenting

-on a show called Garddio a Mwy.

-It was a wonderful experience.

-As you know, I love the outdoors

-and meeting people.

-Nature is a real inspiration for me.

-It's a combination of writing,

-singing and an everyday job.

-# That is the excitement

-# But life is about experience

-# When tears come,

-just let them flow
