And... Action!

0:00:020:00:04

If it's been another incredible BBC Proms season,

0:00:050:00:08

so, as a finale, we'd like to invite you to join us

0:00:080:00:12

for a feast of the finest performances across the UK.

0:00:120:00:16

Welcome to the very best of BBC Proms In The Park 2016.

0:00:160:00:21

Deckchairs, blankets, you name it.

0:00:250:00:27

So who are you looking forward to seeing? Frankie Valli.

0:00:330:00:36

KT Tunstall.

0:00:360:00:38

Tony Hadley.

0:00:380:00:39

I'm in the middle of a park with a load of people

0:00:400:00:42

eating cucumber sandwiches.

0:00:420:00:44

It's nice, it's good.

0:00:440:00:45

It's just good music, you can't beat live music.

0:00:460:00:50

I just can't wait to hear the orchestra behind me.

0:00:500:00:53

I'm imagining this wall of sound and hoping it doesn't

0:00:530:00:56

push me off the stage.

0:00:560:00:58

Standing in front of an orchestra is a magical feeling.

0:00:590:01:02

Proms In The Park is the very best of classical music.

0:01:050:01:09

You come and you enjoy.

0:01:090:01:12

We're going to have a great time tonight.

0:01:140:01:16

So, for the next 90 minutes, we're going to be bringing you

0:01:480:01:51

some of the very best performances from Proms In The Park celebrations

0:01:510:01:55

across the UK, and I promise you the line-up is totally spectacular.

0:01:550:01:59

Here at Park Eirias in Colwyn Bay, the crowds have arrived

0:02:020:02:06

in their thousands to see '80s pop icon Tony Hadley.

0:02:060:02:10

Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Amy Wadge.

0:02:210:02:25

And BBC Young Musician 2016, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason.

0:02:330:02:39

At Belfast Titanic slipways, the audience will be entertained

0:02:500:02:54

by the ever-popular soprano Lesley Garrett...

0:02:540:02:58

..and Slovakian string playing siblings, Vladimir and Anton.

0:03:000:03:04

And leading the party on Glasgow Green is KT Tunstall.

0:03:140:03:18

And she's joined there by the 2014 winners

0:03:220:03:25

of Britain's Got Talent, Collabro.

0:03:250:03:27

And of course the Last Night party wouldn't be complete without

0:03:310:03:34

our friends in Hyde Park and as ever they have an all-star line-up.

0:03:340:03:39

Anita Rani is right in the heart of all the action.

0:03:390:03:43

The atmosphere here in Hyde Park is electric.

0:03:430:03:46

I'm surrounded by some 40,000 die-hard Prommers who are all

0:03:460:03:49

waiting for the acts to appear on that stage.

0:03:490:03:51

And what a line-up.

0:03:510:03:52

We've got the legendary love lexicographers, ABC.

0:03:580:04:02

The multi-talented musician and comedian Tim Minchin

0:04:070:04:10

with one of his fantastic songs from the smash hit, Matilda The Musical.

0:04:100:04:15

Internationally renowned tenor Juan Diego Florez.

0:04:250:04:30

To round off the evening on a high note, to say the least,

0:04:350:04:39

it's Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons

0:04:390:04:41

with all those classics that will no doubt get everyone singing along.

0:04:410:04:45

And to top it all off, it's only gone and stopped raining.

0:04:500:04:54

Just about.

0:04:540:04:56

Oh, yes, you're in for a fantastic evening's entertainment and we get

0:04:560:04:59

the party started at Glasgow Green with an artist performing on home turf.

0:04:590:05:04

During rehearsals, KT Tunstall told us

0:05:040:05:06

what she was looking forward to most about performing

0:05:060:05:09

at Proms In The Park for the very first time.

0:05:090:05:12

I've never played with an orchestra before.

0:05:120:05:15

This is my first time ever that I'll be performing with a full orchestra

0:05:150:05:20

and it's outdoors in Glasgow on an absolutely beautiful day.

0:05:200:05:23

But it was just a fantastic opportunity to be involved

0:05:230:05:27

in that adventure of reimagining songs with orchestral arrangement,

0:05:270:05:32

and I just can't wait to hear that behind me,

0:05:320:05:34

it's just the most amazing sound.

0:05:340:05:36

# Her face is a map of the world

0:05:490:05:50

# Is a map of the world

0:05:500:05:53

# You can see she's a beautiful girl

0:05:530:05:55

# She's a beautiful girl

0:05:550:05:58

# And everything around her is a silver pool of light

0:05:580:06:02

# The people who surround her feel the benefit of it

0:06:020:06:06

# It makes you calm

0:06:060:06:09

# She holds you captivated in her palm

0:06:090:06:12

# Suddenly I see

0:06:120:06:15

# This is what I wanna be

0:06:150:06:17

# Suddenly I see

0:06:170:06:20

# Why the hell it means so much to me

0:06:200:06:24

# This is what I wanna be

0:06:240:06:26

# Suddenly I see

0:06:260:06:29

# Why the hell it means so much to me

0:06:290:06:32

# I feel like walking the world

0:06:400:06:41

# Like walking the world

0:06:410:06:44

# You can hear she's a beautiful girl

0:06:440:06:46

# She's a beautiful girl

0:06:460:06:49

# She fills up every corner like she's born in black and white

0:06:490:06:53

# Makes you feel warmer when you're trying to remember

0:06:530:06:57

# What you heard

0:06:570:07:00

# She likes to leave you hanging on a wire

0:07:000:07:04

# Suddenly I see

0:07:040:07:06

# This is what I wanna be

0:07:060:07:08

# Suddenly I see

0:07:080:07:11

# Why the hell it means so much to me

0:07:110:07:14

# This is what I wanna be

0:07:140:07:17

# Suddenly I see

0:07:170:07:20

# Why the hell it means so much to me

0:07:200:07:23

# And she's taller than most

0:07:230:07:25

# And she's looking at me

0:07:250:07:27

# I can see her eyes looking from the page of a magazine

0:07:270:07:32

# Oh, she makes me feel like I could be a tower

0:07:320:07:34

# A big strong tower, yeah

0:07:340:07:36

# The power to be

0:07:360:07:37

# The power to give

0:07:370:07:38

# The power to see... #

0:07:380:07:39

All right, Glasgow, I need your help.

0:07:430:07:48

Hands in the air.

0:07:480:07:50

We're going to sing, "suddenly I see".

0:07:520:07:54

OK, I want to hear it loud.

0:07:560:07:58

# Suddenly I see

0:07:580:08:00

Let me hear you.

0:08:010:08:03

# Suddenly I see

0:08:030:08:05

Sounds good.

0:08:050:08:06

# Suddenly I see

0:08:070:08:13

# The power to be

0:08:130:08:14

# The power to give

0:08:140:08:15

# The power to see

0:08:150:08:18

# She got the power to be, the power to give

0:08:180:08:20

# The power to see, yeah, yeah

0:08:200:08:22

# She got the power to be, the power to give

0:08:220:08:24

# The power to see, yeah, yeah

0:08:240:08:27

# She got the power to be

0:08:270:08:28

# Suddenly I see

0:09:010:09:04

# Why the hell it means so much to me. #

0:09:040:09:08

Wow. KT Tunstall with a storming version of Suddenly I See,

0:09:270:09:31

accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

0:09:310:09:35

conducted by Stephen Bell.

0:09:350:09:37

Here in Colwyn Bay, one of Wales's best-loved entertainers,

0:09:370:09:41

Wynne Evans, sings Agustin Lara's popular standard, Granada.

0:09:410:09:46

# Granada, tierra sonada por mi

0:09:470:09:54

# Mi cantar se vuelve gitano cuando es para ti

0:09:540:10:00

# Mi cantar hecho de fantasia

0:10:000:10:10

# Mi cantar flor de melancolia

0:10:100:10:18

# Que yo te vengo

0:10:180:10:26

# A dar

0:10:260:10:35

# Granada

0:10:350:10:37

# Mujer que conserva el embrujo

0:10:470:10:51

# De los ojos moros

0:10:510:10:56

# Te sueno rebelde y gitana

0:10:580:11:02

# Cubierta de flores

0:11:020:11:06

# Y beso tu boca de grana

0:11:090:11:13

# Jugosa manzana

0:11:130:11:15

# Que me habla de amores

0:11:150:11:21

Granada, tierra ensangrentada

0:11:210:11:26

# En tardes de toros

0:11:260:11:29

# Mujer que conserva el embrujo

0:11:330:11:36

# De los ojos moros

0:11:360:11:42

# De rosas de suave fragancia

0:11:440:11:48

# Que le dieran marco a la virgen morena

0:11:480:11:55

# Granada

0:11:550:11:56

# Tu tierra esta llena

0:11:580:12:03

# De lindas mujeres

0:12:500:12:52

# De sangre y de sol! #

0:12:520:13:00

A much-deserved warm reception for Wynne Evans there, accompanied

0:13:080:13:11

by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Edwin Outwater.

0:13:110:13:16

To the Belfast Proms party now where Vladimir and Anton

0:13:180:13:21

treat the crowd to some traditional Russian folk music.

0:13:210:13:25

Vladimir and Anton accompanied by the Ulster Orchestra

0:15:110:15:14

under the baton of David Brophy.

0:15:140:15:17

First up tonight here in Hyde Park, it's '80s pop icons ABC.

0:15:200:15:24

Their classic album The Lexicon Of Love

0:15:240:15:26

topped the charts back in 1982,

0:15:260:15:28

then in 2016 they brought out the sequel.

0:15:280:15:31

I caught up with lead singer Martin Fry a little earlier to see

0:15:310:15:33

how he's feeling about his debut here at the Proms.

0:15:330:15:37

So, Martin, debut Proms In The Park. How do you feel?

0:15:370:15:40

Very excited

0:15:400:15:42

and looking forward to stepping on that stage and performing.

0:15:420:15:46

And what will it be like playing with the BBC Concert Orchestra?

0:15:460:15:49

It's the scale. It's the scale.

0:15:490:15:51

We did have a small string section back in the day, so we've

0:15:510:15:54

kind of expanded through the years.

0:15:540:15:56

It's like ABC on steroids out there now in 2016.

0:15:560:16:00

It's bigger, more lavish and more glam.

0:16:000:16:03

# When your world is full of strange arrangements

0:16:190:16:23

# And gravity won't pull you through

0:16:230:16:28

# You know you're missing out on something

0:16:280:16:31

# Well that something depends on you

0:16:310:16:36

# All I'm saying it takes a lot to love you

0:16:360:16:40

# All I'm doing You know it's true

0:16:400:16:44

# All I mean now There's one thing

0:16:440:16:46

# Yes, one thing that turns this grey sky to blue

0:16:460:16:52

# That's the look, that's the look

0:16:520:16:54

# The look of love

0:16:540:16:56

# That's the look, that's the look, the look of love

0:16:560:17:07

# When your girl has left you out on the pavement (Goodbye)

0:17:070:17:12

# Then your dreams fall apart at the seams

0:17:120:17:16

# Your reason for living's your reason for leaving

0:17:160:17:19

# Don't ask me what it means

0:17:190:17:23

# Who's got the look?

0:17:230:17:24

# I don't know the answer to that question

0:17:240:17:27

# Where's the look? If I knew I would tell you

0:17:270:17:31

# What's the look? Look for your information

0:17:310:17:35

# For the one thing, the one thing we can find

0:17:350:17:39

# What's that?

0:17:390:17:40

# That's the look, that's the look, the look of love

0:17:400:17:48

# That's the look

0:17:480:17:53

# Look of love

0:17:530:17:56

# That's the look, that's the look, the look of love

0:18:120:18:28

# If you judge a book by the cover

0:18:280:18:32

# Then you judge the look by the lover

0:18:320:18:36

# I hope you'll soon recover

0:18:360:18:40

# Me I go from one extreme to another

0:18:400:18:45

# And all my friends still ask me

0:18:450:18:48

# Even in Hyde Park they ask me

0:18:480:18:52

# They say Martin, maybe one day you'll find true love

0:18:520:18:56

# And I say maybe

0:18:560:18:59

# That's the look that's the look, sisters and brothers

0:19:010:19:04

# That's the look, that's the look, should help each other

0:19:040:19:08

# That's the look, that's the look, oh, oh, oh,

0:19:080:19:13

# Heavens above.

0:19:130:19:16

# That's the look, that's the look, hip hip hooray, ay.

0:19:160:19:20

# That's the look that's the look, yippee ai yippee aiay

0:19:200:19:25

# That's the look, that's the look, be lucky in love

0:19:250:19:30

# Look of love. #

0:19:300:19:33

Martin Fry

0:19:360:19:39

and ABC.

0:19:390:19:41

Bravo, sir.

0:19:420:19:44

BBC Concert Orchestra rocking it for us.

0:19:440:19:47

# That's the look, that's the look

0:19:490:19:51

# The look of love. #

0:19:510:19:53

I can't get over this crowd.

0:19:530:19:56

You are fabulous.

0:19:560:19:58

This year Michael Ball has been given the daunting task

0:19:590:20:02

of hosting the show in Hyde Park following the passing of

0:20:020:20:05

much-loved legendary broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan,

0:20:050:20:08

who presented Proms In The Park here for 19 years.

0:20:080:20:12

I met up with Michael when he paid tribute to his friend.

0:20:120:20:15

It's a really bittersweet event for me because it's so associated

0:20:150:20:19

with Sir Terry Wogan who I have known throughout my entire career.

0:20:190:20:23

He was a great mate, a great champion of mine,

0:20:230:20:26

so I'm thrilled and honoured to be doing that but I wish

0:20:260:20:30

he was still here to do it because this and Children In Need

0:20:300:20:33

were the big dates in his calendar and no-one does it better.

0:20:330:20:37

He was never nervous,

0:20:370:20:38

he had this sort of calm air about him so he would make

0:20:380:20:43

everyone else feel calm, because it's a really difficult gig.

0:20:430:20:46

I heard that there was a really lovely story

0:20:460:20:48

about how he actually calmed you down once.

0:20:480:20:50

Yeah, his very first Proms 19 years ago,

0:20:500:20:53

and I was on that very first Prom and I was very nervous in the wings.

0:20:530:20:58

And he came up to me and he went, "Ah, young Ball,

0:20:580:21:03

"I've got only one piece of advice for you...

0:21:030:21:05

"Don't bugger it up, and if you do,

0:21:050:21:07

"I'll be here clinging to the wreckage. On you go."

0:21:070:21:10

That's brilliant.

0:21:100:21:11

You should let that same advice resonate today.

0:21:110:21:13

Absolutely, that's exactly what I'm going to do.

0:21:130:21:16

Now, as you know this year marks the centenary of

0:21:180:21:22

the children's author Roald Dahl,

0:21:220:21:25

the man who fired our imagination with stories like

0:21:250:21:29

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, James And The Giant Peach

0:21:290:21:32

and of course The BFG.

0:21:320:21:35

And then of course there's Matilda, and our next guest

0:21:350:21:38

is the creative force behind the Royal Shakespeare Company's long-running,

0:21:380:21:44

multi-award-winning international sensation, Matilda The Musical.

0:21:440:21:49

So please give a jumpsquiffing, whoopsy-splunkers welcome to

0:21:490:21:54

the completely unique and utterly, utterly brilliant Mr Tim Minchin.

0:21:540:22:00

Fabulous Tim Minchin.

0:22:050:22:07

It's a huge honour to be here, thank you for having me.

0:22:170:22:21

That's Clara and Zaris-Angel.

0:22:210:22:23

# When I grow up

0:22:260:22:31

# I will be tall enough to reach the branches

0:22:310:22:35

# That you have to reach to climb the trees

0:22:350:22:38

# You get to climb when you're grown up

0:22:380:22:42

# And when I grow up

0:22:450:22:49

# I will be smart enough to answer all

0:22:490:22:53

# The questions that you need to know

0:22:530:22:56

# The answers to when you're a grown up

# I will eat sweets every day

0:23:040:23:07

# On the way to work and I will go to bed late every night

0:23:070:23:13

# And I will wake up

0:23:150:23:16

# When the sun comes up and I

0:23:160:23:19

# Will watch cartoons until my eyes go square

0:23:190:23:23

# And I won't care cos I'll be all grown up

0:23:230:23:28

# When I grow up

0:25:290:25:33

Tim Minchin with Clara Read and Zaris-Angel Hator,

0:25:410:25:45

two of the young actresses currently sharing the role of Matilda

0:25:450:25:48

in the West End.

0:25:480:25:50

Our next guest here in Colwyn Bay is the gorgeous Amy Wadge.

0:25:530:25:57

I could take at least a week to list her numerous collaborations

0:25:570:26:01

including a rather successful one with a certain Mr Ed Sheeran.

0:26:010:26:06

Tonight though, she's engaging in a slightly different collaboration

0:26:060:26:10

with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with a specially edited

0:26:100:26:13

version of that global hit written with Ed.

0:26:130:26:16

What am I talking about?

0:26:160:26:17

Thinking Out Loud.

0:26:170:26:19

# When your legs don't work like they used to before

0:26:200:26:25

# And I can't sweep you off of your feet

0:26:250:26:31

# Will your mouth still remember the taste of my love

0:26:310:26:36

# Will your eyes still smile from your cheeks

0:26:360:26:39

# Well, darling I will be loving you till we're 70

0:26:390:26:46

# And honey my heart could still fall as hard at 23

0:26:490:26:56

# And I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways

0:26:580:27:05

# Maybe just the touch of a hand

0:27:050:27:10

# Well, me, I fall in love with you every single day

0:27:100:27:16

# And I just wanna tell you I am

0:27:160:27:20

# So honey now

0:27:200:27:24

# Take me into your loving arms

0:27:240:27:29

# Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars

0:27:290:27:35

# Place your head on my beating heart

0:27:350:27:38

# I'm thinking out loud

0:27:380:27:41

# Maybe we found love right where we are

0:27:410:27:46

# When my hair's all but gone and my memory fades

0:27:480:27:52

# And this crowd don't remember my name

0:27:520:27:56

# When my hands don't play the strings the same way, mm

0:27:570:28:03

# I know you will still love me the same

0:28:030:28:07

# Cos honey your soul can never grow old, it's evergreen

0:28:070:28:13

# Darling, your smile's forever in my mind and memory

0:28:170:28:24

# I'm thinking 'bout how people fall in love in mysterious ways

0:28:250:28:33

# Maybe it's all part of a plan

0:28:330:28:36

# I'll just keep on making the same mistakes

0:28:380:28:43

# Hoping that you'll understand

0:28:430:28:48

# But baby now

0:28:480:28:52

# Take me into your loving arms

0:28:520:28:54

# Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars

0:28:560:29:00

# Place your head on my beating heart

0:29:000:29:05

# I'm thinking out loud

0:29:050:29:08

# That maybe we found love right where we are, oh

0:29:080:29:19

# That maybe we found love right where we are. #

0:29:190:29:23

Thank you so much.

0:29:440:29:46

The beautiful Amy Wadge with Thinking Out Loud,

0:29:460:29:49

the international hit she co-wrote with Ed Sheeran.

0:29:490:29:53

Still to come...

0:29:530:29:54

We join forces with Prommers at the Royal Albert Hall

0:29:590:30:02

for the now-traditional Last Night sing-along.

0:30:020:30:05

Soprano Lesley Garrett in Belfast.

0:30:160:30:20

And, in Hyde Park, tonight's headliners

0:30:230:30:26

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons help us relive

0:30:260:30:29

the sensational sounds of the '60s and '70s.

0:30:290:30:33

Thank you so much.

0:30:430:30:44

Well, one tradition of BBC Proms in the Park

0:30:440:30:47

which I particularly like

0:30:470:30:48

is that of shining a spotlight on new and emerging talent.

0:30:480:30:52

And this year we are so thrilled here in Colwyn Bay

0:30:520:30:56

to be showcasing rising star, cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason,

0:30:560:31:01

winner of BBC Young Musician 2016.

0:31:010:31:04

And I got a chance to meet him earlier on. Cheers.

0:31:040:31:08

Since you won Young Musician, it's been a bit of a whirlwind time, hasn't it?

0:31:120:31:16

So what have you been up to and what do you expect from tonight?

0:31:160:31:20

Yeah, it's been very busy.

0:31:200:31:23

I think one of my highlights was playing in Festival Hall

0:31:230:31:25

with the Chineke Orchestra

0:31:250:31:27

and more concerts like that will hopefully come. And I think

0:31:270:31:30

tonight it's definitely another one of those - it's going to be

0:31:300:31:34

another one of those highlights.

0:31:340:31:35

Is there something different about playing, musically... Is there

0:31:350:31:39

something different about playing in an outside venue as opposed

0:31:390:31:42

to somewhere more rarefied like the Cadogan Hall or something like that?

0:31:420:31:45

The main difference for me as a performer is the acoustic.

0:31:450:31:49

In a concert hall you get the kind of feedback from the hall

0:31:490:31:52

of your sound whereas outside it kind of gets lost in the wind

0:31:520:31:55

and the mics pick it up and it sounds good out in the audience

0:31:550:31:58

but to me I imagine it's quite different.

0:31:580:32:01

So I think that's going to be quite difficult to get used to.

0:32:010:32:05

Other than that, I think it's still a lovely performance.

0:32:050:32:08

It should be great.

0:32:080:32:09

Sheku Kanneh-Mason there, a rare and brilliant talent.

0:36:170:36:21

Now, throughout the summer, BBC Music's Get Playing initiative

0:36:210:36:24

has been encouraging you to pick up an instrument even if

0:36:240:36:26

you've never done it before, and join our virtual orchestra.

0:36:260:36:29

Well, more than 1,200 of you did, including some famous faces.

0:36:290:36:32

Let's see and hear how they got on.

0:36:320:36:34

First, here's your "A" to tune to.

0:36:480:36:52

INSTRUMENTS TUNING

0:36:530:36:57

Excellent.

0:37:080:37:10

Everybody ready now?

0:37:100:37:11

Here we go.

0:37:110:37:13

MUSIC: Carmen by Georges Bizet

0:37:140:37:18

Fabulous.

0:39:520:39:53

The virtual orchestra led there by internationally

0:39:530:39:55

acclaimed conductor and Proms regular Marin Alsop.

0:39:550:39:58

Great to see so many people inspired to get playing.

0:39:580:40:02

Well, now for somebody who is not only incredibly lovely

0:40:020:40:05

but also knows a thing or two about performing

0:40:050:40:07

on the international stage.

0:40:070:40:08

I am of course speaking about Tony Hadley,

0:40:080:40:11

lead singer with New Romantic pop pioneers Spandau Ballet

0:40:110:40:15

as well as being a solo artist in his own right.

0:40:150:40:18

And, lucky me, I got a chance to meet up with him earlier on.

0:40:180:40:23

You clearly get a buzz performing to the crowds.

0:40:230:40:25

Do you ever get fed up with it?

0:40:250:40:27

I'm doing this still after 36 years and I can't believe it

0:40:270:40:31

and I'm still loving it and still enjoying it.

0:40:310:40:33

People say, "Do you get bored with the songs?"

0:40:330:40:35

Gold, Through The Barricades, whatever it is.

0:40:350:40:37

And I say, "No, because every audience is different."

0:40:370:40:39

And then sometimes you see people react, like if you do True,

0:40:390:40:44

you see a couple and they maybe got married 25 years ago and they're like, "I love you."

0:40:440:40:48

And it all gets a bit teary.

0:40:480:40:50

So it's nice.

0:40:500:40:52

And Gold of course has become the sort of, "All right, Tone."

0:40:520:40:55

Every taxi driver down in London is like, "All right, Tone. Gold!"

0:40:550:40:59

"All right, son, yeah, lovely."

0:40:590:41:01

And that's what it is like so it's kind of cool.

0:41:010:41:03

But you still have a joy about it, you still feel really fresh?

0:41:030:41:06

Do you think that's what connects?

0:41:060:41:07

I'm always trying to fine tune and resting on your laurels

0:41:070:41:11

is never a good thing and I'm always rediscovering things about

0:41:110:41:14

my voice and stuff like that so you just want to get better

0:41:140:41:17

and better, whatever you do, you want to be the best that you can be.

0:41:170:41:21

# Mother doesn't know where love has gone

0:41:310:41:38

# She says it must be youth that keeps us feeling strong

0:41:380:41:46

# I see it in her face that's turned to ice

0:41:460:41:53

# And when she smiles she shows the lines of sacrifice

0:41:530:42:01

# And now I know what they're saying

0:42:010:42:06

# As our sun begins to fade

0:42:060:42:12

# And we make our love on wasteland

0:42:120:42:18

# And through the barricades

0:42:180:42:22

# Father made my history

0:42:250:42:32

# He fought for what he thought would set us somehow free

0:42:320:42:40

# He taught me what to say in school

0:42:400:42:47

# I learned it off by heart but now that's torn in two

0:42:470:42:54

# And now I know what they're saying

0:42:560:43:01

# In the music of the parade

0:43:010:43:06

# And we make our love on wasteland

0:43:060:43:13

# And through the barricades

0:43:130:43:18

# Born on different sides of life

0:43:310:43:38

# But we fear the same and feel all of this strife

0:43:390:43:47

# So come to me when I'm asleep

0:43:470:43:53

# We'll cross the lines and dance upon the streets

0:43:550:44:03

# And now I know what they're saying

0:44:030:44:07

# As the drums begin to fade

0:44:070:44:11

# And we make our love on wasteland

0:44:130:44:19

# And through the barricades

0:44:190:44:24

# Oh, turn around and I'll be there

0:44:260:44:32

# Well there's a scar right through my heart but I'll bare it again

0:44:320:44:38

# I thought we were the human race

0:44:400:44:43

# But we were just another borderline case

0:44:430:44:48

# And the stars reach down and tell us

0:44:480:44:52

# There's always one escape

0:44:520:44:55

# Oh, I don't know where love has gone

0:44:550:45:03

# But in this troubled land desperation keeps us strong

0:45:050:45:12

# Friday's child is full of soul

0:45:120:45:19

# With nothing left to lose, there's everything to go

0:45:190:45:26

# Now I know what they're saying

0:45:260:45:30

# It's a terrible beauty we've made

0:45:300:45:35

# And we make our love on wasteland

0:45:350:45:41

# And through the barricades

0:45:410:45:45

# And now I know what they're saying

0:45:450:45:49

# As our hearts go to their graves

0:45:490:45:54

# When we made our love on wasteland

0:45:540:46:03

# And through the barricades. #

0:46:030:46:08

Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:47:450:47:48

That was the fantastic Tony Hadley.

0:47:480:47:50

In Belfast, our next performance comes from the award-winning

0:47:520:47:55

West End and Broadway actor and singer John Owen-Jones.

0:47:550:47:59

Renowned for his performances as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera

0:47:590:48:03

and Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, here he is with one

0:48:030:48:06

of the best-loved numbers from Le Mis, Bring Him Home.

0:48:060:48:10

# God on high

0:48:100:48:20

# Hear my prayer

0:48:200:48:26

# In my need

0:48:280:48:33

# You have always been there

0:48:330:48:40

# He is young

0:48:400:48:46

# He's afraid

0:48:460:48:53

# Let him rest

0:48:530:48:59

# Heaven blessed

0:48:590:49:04

# Bring him home

0:49:040:49:22

# He's like the son I might have known

0:49:230:49:28

# If God had granted me a son

0:49:280:49:32

# The summers die

0:49:320:49:35

# One by one

0:49:350:49:37

# How soon they fly

0:49:370:49:41

# On and on

0:49:410:49:44

# And I am old

0:49:440:49:47

# And will be gone

0:49:470:49:51

# Bring him peace

0:49:550:50:03

# Bring him joy

0:50:030:50:10

# He is young

0:50:100:50:15

# He is only a boy

0:50:150:50:21

# You can take

0:50:210:50:27

# You can give

0:50:270:50:33

# Let him be

0:50:330:50:38

# Let him live

0:50:380:50:44

# If I die

0:50:440:50:50

# Let me die

0:50:500:50:56

# Let him live

0:50:560:51:04

# Bring him home

0:51:040:51:18

# Bring him home. #

0:51:180:51:41

Back here in Hyde Park now for one of the biggest acts of the '90s.

0:51:530:51:58

They've sold in excess of 12 million albums,

0:51:580:52:01

they're gorgeous, they're talented, it is of course All Saints.

0:52:010:52:05

# A few questions that I need to know

0:52:060:52:09

# How you could ever hurt me so

0:52:090:52:13

# I need to know what I've done wrong

0:52:130:52:16

# And how long it's been going on

0:52:160:52:20

# Was it that I never paid enough attention

0:52:200:52:23

# Or did I not give enough affection

0:52:230:52:27

# Not only will your answers keep me sane

0:52:270:52:30

# But I'll know never to make the same mistake again

0:52:300:52:35

# You can tell me to my face

0:52:350:52:38

# Or even on the phone

0:52:380:52:41

# You can write it in a letter

0:52:410:52:45

# Either way I've have to know

0:52:450:52:49

# Did I never treat you right

0:52:490:52:52

# Did I always start the fight

0:52:520:52:56

# Either way I'm going out of my mind

0:52:560:52:59

# All the answers to my questions I have to find

0:52:590:53:03

# My head's spinning

0:53:030:53:07

# Boy, I'm in a daze

0:53:070:53:10

# I feel isolated

0:53:100:53:14

# Don't want to communicate

0:53:140:53:18

# I'll take a shower

0:53:180:53:19

# I will scour

0:53:190:53:21

# I will roam

0:53:210:53:25

# Find peace of mind

0:53:250:53:26

# The happy mind

0:53:260:53:28

# I once owned, yeah

0:53:280:53:31

# Flexing vocabulary runs right through me

0:53:310:53:35

# The alphabet runs right from A to Z

0:53:350:53:39

# Conversations, hesitations in my mind

0:53:390:53:42

# You got my conscience asking questions that I can't find

0:53:420:53:46

# I'm not crazy

0:53:460:53:49

# I'm sure I ain't done nothin' wrong, no

0:53:490:53:53

# I'm just waiting

0:53:530:53:55

# Cos I heard that this feeling won't last that long

0:53:550:54:00

# Never ever have I ever felt so low

0:54:000:54:04

# When you gonna take me out of this black hole

0:54:040:54:08

# Never ever have I ever felt so sad

0:54:080:54:11

# The way I'm feeling, yeah, you got me feeling really bad

0:54:110:54:15

# Never ever have I had to find

0:54:150:54:18

# I've had to dig a way to find my own peace of mind

0:54:180:54:22

# I've never ever had my conscience to fight

0:54:220:54:25

# The way I'm feeling, yeah, it just don't feel right

0:54:250:54:29

# I'll keep searching

0:54:290:54:33

# Deep within my soul

0:54:330:54:36

# For all the answers

0:54:360:54:40

# Don't want to hurt no more

0:54:400:54:43

# I need peace

0:54:430:54:45

# Gotta feel at ease

0:54:450:54:47

# Need to be free from pain

0:54:470:54:52

# Go insane

0:54:520:54:54

# My heart aches, yeah

0:54:540:54:57

# Sometimes vocabulary runs through my head

0:54:570:55:01

# The alphabet runs right from A to Z

0:55:010:55:05

# Conversations, hesitations in my mind

0:55:050:55:08

# You got my conscience asking questions that I can't find

0:55:080:55:12

# I'm not crazy

0:55:120:55:15

# I'm sure I ain't done nothing wrong

0:55:150:55:19

# Now I'm just waiting

0:55:190:55:22

# Cos I heard that this feeling won't last that long

0:55:220:55:30

# When you gonna take me out of this black hole

0:55:300:55:33

# Never ever have I ever felt so sad

0:55:330:55:37

# The way I'm feeling, yeah, you got me feeling really bad

0:55:370:55:41

# Never ever have I had to find

0:55:410:55:44

# I've had to dig a way to find my own peace of mind

0:55:440:55:48

# I've never ever had my conscience to fight

0:55:480:55:51

# The way I'm feeling, yeah, it just don't feel right. #

# Sleep, sleep, I couldn't sleep tonight

# Not for all the jewels in the crown

1:00:091:00:15

# I could have danced all night

1:00:151:00:22

# And still have begged for more

1:00:221:00:29

# I could have spread my wings

1:00:291:00:32

# And done a thousand things

1:00:321:00:36

# I've never done before

1:00:361:00:42

# I'll never know what made it so exciting

1:00:421:00:49

# I could have danced, danced, danced all night

# And still have begged for more

1:01:281:01:31

1:02:461:02:50

# And wake up where the clouds are far behind me

1:02:501:02:58

# Where troubles melt like lemon drops

1:03:001:03:04

# Away above those chimney tops

1:03:041:03:08

# That's where you'll find me

1:03:081:03:16

# Somewhere over the rainbow

1:03:161:03:23

# Way up high

1:03:231:03:29

# There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby

1:03:291:03:40

# Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue

1:03:401:03:52

# And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true

1:03:521:04:01

# Someday I'll wish upon a star

1:04:041:04:07

# And wake up where the clouds are far behind me

1:04:071:04:14

# Someday I'll wish upon a star

1:04:511:04:55

# And wake up where the clouds are far behind me

# Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly

1:05:171:05:29

# Birds fly over the rainbow

1:05:291:05:35

# Why then, oh, why can't I?

1:05:351:05:40

# If happy little bluebirds fly

1:05:421:05:45

# Beyond the rainbow

1:05:451:05:50

# Why, oh, why can't I? #

1:05:501:06:05

1:06:281:06:32

The Glasgow crowd giving home-grown mezzo Karen Cargill

1:09:071:09:10

1:09:101:09:12

Next to perform in Hyde Park is the evening's host Michael Ball

1:09:141:09:17

with his old friend Alfie Boe.

1:09:171:09:20

We're going to sing a song that we recorded for our new album.

1:09:221:09:25

On a night like this, the Last Night of the Proms,

1:09:251:09:30

it makes one feel so proud,

1:09:301:09:32

so connected,

1:09:321:09:34

and this is a song that celebrates that pride in who we are

1:09:341:09:40

and where we come from.

1:09:401:09:41

# No man, no madness

1:09:531:09:59

# Though their sad power may prevail

1:09:591:10:05

# Can possess, conquer, my country's heart

1:10:051:10:12

# They rise to fail

1:10:121:10:17

# She is eternal

1:10:191:10:24

# Long before nations' lines were drawn

1:10:241:10:30

# When no flags flew, when no armies stood

1:10:301:10:36

# My land was born

1:10:361:10:43

# And you ask me why I love her

1:10:431:10:50

# Through wars, death and despair

1:10:501:10:56

# She is the constant, we who don't care

1:10:561:11:08

# And you ask me will I leave her - but how?

1:11:081:11:16

# I cross over borders but I'm still there now

1:11:231:11:33

# How can I leave her?

1:11:551:12:01

# Where would I start?

1:12:011:12:07

# Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart

1:12:071:12:18

# My land's only borders lie around my heart. #

1:12:181:12:37

Michael Ball and Alfie Boe wowing the 40,000-strong crowd

1:12:411:12:46

here in Hyde Park.

1:12:461:12:47

Here in Colwyn Bay we're in for another treat by Tony Hadley.

1:12:501:12:56

And in this year where the Olympic team have done so well,

1:12:561:13:01

what better song to play than Spandau Ballet's hit, Gold?

1:13:011:13:06

# Thank you for coming home

1:13:081:13:11

# I'm sorry that the chairs are all worn

1:13:111:13:15

# I left them here I could have sworn

1:13:151:13:20

# These are my salad days

1:13:201:13:23

# Slowly being eaten away

1:13:231:13:26

# Just another play for today

1:13:261:13:29

# Oh, but I'm proud of you, but I'm proud of you

1:13:291:13:35

# Nothing left to make me feel small

1:13:351:13:38

# Luck has left me standing so tall

1:13:381:13:48

# Gold

1:13:481:13:50

# Always believe in your soul

1:13:501:13:54

# You've got the power to know

1:13:541:13:57

# You're indestructible

1:13:571:14:00

# Always believe in, because you are

1:14:001:14:04

# Gold

1:14:041:14:06

# Glad that you're bound to return

1:14:061:14:10

# There's something I could have learned

1:14:101:14:12

# You're indestructible, always believing

1:14:121:14:19

# After the rush has gone

1:14:271:14:30

# I hope you find a little more time

1:14:301:14:34

# Remember we were partners in crime

1:14:341:14:38

# It's only two years ago

1:14:391:14:42

# The man with the suit and the face

1:14:421:14:46

# You knew that he was there on the case

1:14:461:14:49

# Now he's in love with you, he's in love with you

1:14:491:14:54

# My love is like a high prison wall

1:14:541:14:57

# But you could leave me standing so tall

1:14:571:15:05

# Gold

1:15:071:15:09

# Always believe in your soul

1:15:091:15:12

# You've got the power to know

1:15:121:15:15

# You're indestructible

1:15:151:15:18

# Always believe in, because you are

1:15:181:15:22

# Gold

1:15:221:15:24

# I'm glad that you're bound to return

1:15:241:15:28

# Something I could have learned

1:15:281:15:30

# You're indestructible, always believing

1:15:301:15:36

# My love is like a high prison wall

1:15:541:15:57

# But you could leave me standing so tall

1:15:571:16:05

# Gold

1:16:071:16:08

# Always believe in your soul

1:16:081:16:12

# You've got the power to know

1:16:121:16:15

# You're indestructible

1:16:151:16:18

# Always believe in, because you are

1:16:181:16:22

# Gold

1:16:221:16:23

# I'm glad that you're bound to return

1:16:231:16:27

# Something I could have learned

1:16:271:16:30

# You're indestructible, always believing... #

1:16:301:16:40

Thank you very much.

1:16:401:16:42

Enjoy the rest of your evening.

1:16:521:16:56

# Soul, soul, soul. #

Thank you.

1:17:111:17:12

Thank you very much to the conductor, the orchestra, the choir.

1:17:121:17:16

Well, this has been my first ever Proms in the Park,

1:17:211:17:23

and I can tell you the atmosphere is unique and electric,

1:17:231:17:27

and all the 40,000 Prommers here have been waiting all night

1:17:271:17:30

for the young man who has just stepped on that stage -

1:17:301:17:33

it's '60s blue-eyed pop legend, Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons.

1:17:331:17:38

One of my favourites.

1:17:481:17:50

# We take the pressure, and we throw away

1:17:511:17:55

# Conventionality belongs to yesterday

1:17:551:18:00

# There is a chance that we can make it so far

1:18:001:18:03

# We start believin' now that we can be who we are,

1:18:031:18:08

# Grease is the word

1:18:081:18:10

# It's the word that you heard

1:18:101:18:12

# It's got groove, it's got meaning

1:18:121:18:17

# Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion

1:18:171:18:22

# Grease is the way we are feeling

1:18:221:18:26

# This is a life of illusion, a life of control

1:18:261:18:31

# Mixed with confusion - what're we doin' here?

1:18:311:18:38

# We take the pressure, and we throw away

1:18:381:18:41

# Conventionality belongs to yesterday

1:18:411:18:46

# There is a chance that we can make it so far

1:18:461:18:50

# We start believin' now that we can be who we are

1:18:501:18:54

# Grease is the word

1:18:541:18:55

# It's the word that you heard

1:18:551:18:58

# It's got groove, it's got meaning

1:18:581:19:04

# Grease is the time, is the place, is the motion

1:19:041:19:08

# Grease is the way we are feeling

1:19:081:19:12

# Grease

1:19:211:19:27

# Grease is the word

1:19:271:19:29

# It's the word that you heard

1:19:291:19:30

# It's got groove, it's got meaning

1:19:301:19:34

1:19:361:19:40

# Grease is the way we are feeling. #

1:19:401:19:45

1:20:541:20:57

# (Silly boy) When she said to my surprise

1:20:571:21:02

# Big girls don't cry

1:21:021:21:11

1:22:181:22:26

Wow, what a fantastic way to end this magical evening of music-making.

1:22:331:22:38

A reminder that there's almost nothing like the power of music

1:22:381:22:41

to bring us together.

1:22:411:22:43

The BBC Proms is really a musical celebration like no other.

1:22:431:22:48

So we leave you with the traditional Last Night medley from across

1:22:481:22:54

the UK including our friends at the Royal Albert Hall.

1:22:541:22:57

We'll see you next year. Goodnight.

1:25:401:25:47

# Tis you, tis you must go and I must bide

1:25:471:25:55

# But come ye back when summer's in the meadow

1:25:551:26:03
