CHEERING

0:04:290:04:31

-Is everybody in good singing form in Newry? ALL:

-Yes!

0:04:320:04:35

Right. It's very, very simple. When I say "It blowed away"...

0:04:350:04:39

All you gotta do is "It blowed away".

0:04:390:04:42

# It blowed away

0:04:420:04:44

-# It blowed away

-# It blowed away

0:04:440:04:46

Right, we're gonna try it with just people up top.

0:04:460:04:49

Nobody down the bottom. # It blowed away

0:04:490:04:51

# It blowed away

0:04:510:04:53

Not too bad. We'll try it so.

0:04:530:04:54

Take her in, Johnny. Let's try it. Here we go!

0:04:540:04:57

THEY CLAP ALONG

0:04:590:05:01

Oh!

0:05:010:05:03

Oh!

0:05:050:05:07

# When they opened up the strip I was young and full of zip

0:05:150:05:20

# I wanted some place to call my home

0:05:200:05:24

# And so I made the race and staked me out a place

0:05:240:05:28

# And settled down along the Cimarron

0:05:280:05:32

-# It blowed away

# My Oklahoma home, it blowed away

0:05:370:05:42

# Well, it looked so green and fair when I built my shanty there

0:05:420:05:47

# My Oklahoma home, it blowed away

0:05:470:05:51

# Well, I planted wheat and oats Got some chickens and some shoats

0:05:510:05:55

# Aimed to have some ham and eggs to feed my face

0:05:550:06:00

# Got a mule to pull the plough Got an old red muley cow

0:06:000:06:04

# And got a fancy mortgage on the place...

0:06:180:06:23

# Everything except my mortgage blowed away...

0:06:230:06:26

0:08:110:08:13

Get those hands up! Hey!

0:08:130:08:17

Oh!

0:08:170:08:19

Oh!

0:08:210:08:23

Hey!

0:08:250:08:27

CHEERING

0:08:340:08:36

Mike Denver, ladies and gentlemen. Isn't he doing a great job?

0:08:400:08:44

-HE SPEAKS IN IRISH

-Fantastic.

0:08:440:08:47

There's lots of bands around Portumna.

0:09:010:09:03

As a child growing up, I would've seen the likes of The Conquerors were a great band around here.

0:09:030:09:08

I would have seen them travelling off every afternoon

0:09:080:09:10

when I'd be heading home from school.

0:09:100:09:12

Seeing my mam heading out every night,

0:09:170:09:19

that was very normal for me growing up to see.

0:09:190:09:21

That would have been something that I always wanted to be doing

0:09:210:09:24

and something I always wanted to be, on the road.

0:09:240:09:27

When Mike was about 15 or 16, I heard him sing.

0:09:310:09:35

It was around the time Garth Brooks was coming to Ireland.

0:09:350:09:38

And Mike was really into Garth Brooks at the time and I went in

0:09:380:09:41

and I said, "Gosh, come out here, quick. You gotta hear Mike."

0:09:410:09:45

I listened outside the door, I thought it was Garth Brooks singing.

0:09:450:09:48

He was lucky he got good genes from the mother!

0:09:480:09:51

It was a great learning experience.

0:09:570:09:59

But I had a bit of the groundwork done as I say and a little bit of the apprenticeship served.

0:09:590:10:04

Mike Denver!

0:10:040:10:06

# Could've been the whiskey Might've been the gin... #

0:10:160:10:20

Liz came along to a gig.

0:10:280:10:30

She was bringing her mam along to a gig and, as I say,

0:10:300:10:33

we haven't looked back.

0:10:330:10:34

10, 11, 12 years later, still happy as ever.

0:10:340:10:38

It's tough when you're leaving home early in the afternoon.

0:10:450:10:48

You're not home till late the next morning,

0:10:480:10:51

but that two hours on stage, it just makes up for it.

0:10:510:10:53

When you hop out on that stage, nerves just disappear.

0:11:050:11:08

You have them for that minute walking around before you hop out,

0:11:080:11:11

but I think it's like most artists...

0:11:110:11:13

You have a little flutter as I say before you go out.

0:11:130:11:17

You're a little bit worried, but once you get on that stage, it all

0:11:170:11:20

just disappears when you see people out there enjoying themselves.

0:11:200:11:23

It brings the good out in you.

0:11:230:11:25

Mike, you started out in your mother's band,

0:11:250:11:27

but what was it like when you went on the road yourself?

0:11:270:11:31

-Was it nerve-racking being on your own?

-It was frightening.

0:11:310:11:34

It's one of them memories that... always in the back of my mind,

0:11:340:11:37

I can remember the days coming up to putting the band on the road,

0:11:370:11:40

the few days rehearsing, and practising walking out on the stage and all these things.

0:11:400:11:43

They're the little things that still stick in my mind.

0:11:430:11:46

The very first song I sing,

0:11:460:11:47

the night we launched the band was John Denver, Country Roads.

0:11:470:11:51

That was the opening number.

0:11:510:11:52

I think the next number was yours, a bit of Stand Beside Me.

0:11:520:11:55

So there's a couple of numbers that stick in the mind

0:11:550:11:57

from the very beginning. They were some of the songs.

0:11:570:12:00

Now, you're one of the younger generation of singers,

0:12:000:12:04

but singing the good old country songs.

0:12:040:12:06

How do you choose the songs you sing?

0:12:060:12:08

A lot of the songs are chosen from people sitting in audiences at gigs

0:12:080:12:12

come up at the end of the night and would suggest different songs.

0:12:120:12:15

I have a great team in the office. My manager, Willie, is a great influence.

0:12:150:12:19

And my mam has always been a huge influence as well,

0:12:190:12:21

picking songs over the years for me.

0:12:210:12:24

Now, I suppose there are always highlights in any career,

0:12:240:12:27

but I would hazard a guess by saying

0:12:270:12:30

recording with George Jones must have been a highlight?

0:12:300:12:33

It was, definitely. A lot of things stick out in my mind.

0:12:330:12:36

Without a doubt, George Jones was definitely one of the big ones

0:12:360:12:39

because I grew up listening to George Jones.

0:12:390:12:41

I loved George Jones and Merle Haggard and all these guys.

0:12:410:12:44

There's also other ones that... Meeting different people,

0:12:440:12:46

getting to tour with the likes of Charlie Pride and one of

0:12:460:12:49

the very first tours we done that I got to work with Crystal Gayle.

0:12:490:12:52

That was huge thing at the time for us to meet people like that

0:12:520:12:55

that I would have just grown up and seen them on the television.

0:12:550:12:58

To meet people even like yourself at the time, it was a huge buzz

0:12:580:13:02

and a huge highlight of my career, for someone that coming from a town in Portumna, small place,

0:13:020:13:07

and meeting all these people that you grew up watching on

0:13:070:13:10

television and seeing and hearing on the radio, it was a huge thing.

0:13:100:13:14

# I've walked the soles off my feet in this dark London street

0:13:240:13:28

# In search for a room and a bed

0:13:280:13:33

# And my heart grows so weary With these nights cold and dreary

0:13:330:13:38

# All I want is to lay down my head

0:13:380:13:42

# I can see by your face that you're leaving this place

0:13:420:13:47

# You're catching the overnight train

0:13:470:13:51

# If you should see my mother Will you tell her I love her

0:13:510:13:55

# And I'll write just as soon as I can?

0:13:550:14:00

# Six months in this city God knows there's no pity

0:14:000:14:04

# When you haven't a bob of your own

0:14:040:14:08

# And there's no need for locks on this old cardboard box

0:14:080:14:13

# Even though it's a place I call home

0:14:130:14:17

# I can see by your face that you're leaving this place

0:14:170:14:22

# You're catching the overnight train

0:14:220:14:26

# If you should see my mother Will you tell her I love her

0:14:260:14:31

# And I'll write just as soon as I can?

0:14:310:14:35

# Outside Paddington Station My heart it is breaking

0:14:440:14:49

# I can't tell my tears from the rain

0:14:490:14:53

# And the jingle and jangle of the damned old triangle

0:14:530:14:57

# Keeps ringing around in my brain

0:14:570:15:01

# I can see by your face that you're leaving this place

0:15:010:15:06

# You're catching the overnight train

# You're catching the overnight train

0:15:240:15:28

# If you should see my mother Will you tell her I love her

0:15:280:15:32

# And I'll write just as soon as I can? #

0:15:320:15:36

# Girl, you taught me how to hurt real bad and cry myself to sleep

0:16:340:16:40

# And showed me how this town can shatter dreams

0:16:400:16:44

# Another lesson 'bout a naive fool who came to Babylon

0:16:450:16:50

# And found out that the pie don't taste so sweet

0:16:500:16:56

# And it's guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:16:560:17:02

# Lonely, lonely streets that I call home

0:17:020:17:06

# And my guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:17:060:17:12

# The only thing that keeps me hangin' on...

0:17:120:17:17

Fiddle time now!

0:17:270:17:29

# There ain't no glamour in this tinselled land

0:17:390:17:43

# Of lost and wasted lives

0:17:430:17:45

# Painful scars are all that's left of me

0:17:450:17:50

# But thank you girl for teachin' me brand new ways to be cruel

0:17:500:17:56

# If I can find my mind now I guess I'll just leave

0:17:560:18:01

# And it's guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:18:010:18:07

# Lonely, lonely streets that I call home

0:18:070:18:12

# And my guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:18:120:18:18

# The only thing that keeps me hangin' on

0:18:180:18:23

# And it's guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:18:440:18:50

# Lonely, lonely streets that I call home

0:18:500:18:55

# And my guitars, Cadillacs Hillbilly music

0:18:550:19:01

# The only thing that keeps me hangin' on

0:19:010:19:07

# It's the only thing that keeps me hangin' on

0:19:070:19:12

# It's the only thing that keeps me hangin' on. #

HE SPEAKS IN IRISH

0:21:450:21:47

SHE CORRECTS HIM

0:21:540:21:55

My Irish is very, very minimum.

0:22:030:22:05

I have the "conas ata tu" and the "failte"

0:22:050:22:07

and a few little words here and there

0:22:070:22:09

but it's a song that I know by ear,

0:22:090:22:12

which is going to make it a little bit easier to sing it.

0:22:120:22:14

SHE SINGS IN IRISH

HE SINGS ALONG

0:22:270:22:30

So you'll be fluent now, Mike,

0:22:370:22:38

-by the time you're finished with it.

-There's definitely no chance of that

0:22:380:22:41

but if I get through this verse and chorus,

0:22:410:22:43

I will be a very happy man on the night.

0:22:430:22:45

You'll be great!

0:22:450:22:47

Now, put your hands together for Siobhan Mhaoileoin.

# I recall the way you smiled the first time that I met you

0:37:530:37:59

# Bewildered by your beauty

0:38:000:38:03

# I could hardly say hello

0:38:030:38:05

# I've loved you from the first time

0:38:080:38:11

# You held my hand and kissed me

0:38:110:38:15

# Where the golden sun was setting and the ocean breezes blow

# But if you decide to leave

0:46:530:46:56

0:46:560:46:58

I've been a few times and a good few times.

0:46:580:47:01

-You have - yourself and Sean on numerous occasions.

-Yes.

0:47:010:47:04

# Tommy K, Tommy K... #

0:47:120:47:14

You have some lovely songs

0:47:140:47:17

but I think at the moment my favourite is Tommy K.

0:47:170:47:20

And I love your video of Tommy K.

0:47:240:47:26

Tommy K is just... It's one of them songs that...

0:47:260:47:29

It was one that a lot of young people and everyone seemed to like.

0:47:290:47:32

So it's a great song and the video was a great thing for it.

0:47:320:47:34

Yes, because you can see the actions now,

0:47:340:47:36

-it's a different dance!

-A bit of dance!

0:47:360:47:38

-And everybody can do that now.

-That was it.

0:47:380:47:40

And when we got Brendan Grace and Paddy Cole, Foster and Allen,

0:47:400:47:43

and Joe Canning and everyone else that was on it, it was great.

0:47:430:47:47

It is a lovely song.

# The times were different then

0:48:120:48:14

# The dancing was in dance halls

0:48:140:48:17

# And it had to stop for lent

0:48:170:48:19

# Ah, but one man kept it going

0:48:190:48:21

# With his home-made twin-deck sounds

0:48:210:48:24
