APPLAUSE

0:04:570:05:00

Thank you very much.

0:05:020:05:05

That's lovely.

0:05:050:05:06

This next song was written by somebody

0:05:060:05:08

I admire very much, the wonderful John Prine,

0:05:080:05:10

who spends part of his year in Ireland, actually,

0:05:100:05:13

and he wrote this lovely song called Blue Umbrella.

0:05:130:05:16

# Feelings are strange

0:05:250:05:27

# Especially when they come true

0:05:270:05:29

# And I got a feeling

0:05:320:05:33

# That you'll be leaving soon

0:05:330:05:35

# So I tried to rearrange

0:05:370:05:40

# All my emotions

0:05:400:05:42

# But it seems the same

0:05:430:05:45

# No matter what I do

0:05:450:05:47

# Blue umbrella

0:05:500:05:51

# Rests upon my shoulder

0:05:510:05:54

# Hides the pain

0:05:560:05:57

# While the rain makes up my mind

0:05:570:06:01

# My feet are wet

0:06:020:06:04

# From thinking this thing over

0:06:040:06:06

# And it's been so long

0:06:080:06:09

# Since I felt the warm sunshine

0:06:090:06:12

# Just give me one good reason

0:06:150:06:18

# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:06:200:06:24

# Just give me one extra season

0:06:270:06:31

# So I can figure out the other four

0:06:330:06:36

# Daytime makes me wonder why you left me

0:06:510:06:55

# Night-time makes me wonder what I said

0:06:570:07:01

# "Next time" are the words I'd like to plan on

0:07:030:07:07

# "Last time" was the only thing she said

0:07:090:07:13

# Blue umbrella

0:07:160:07:17

# Rests upon my shoulder

0:07:170:07:19

# Hides the pain

0:07:210:07:23

# While the rain makes up my mind

0:07:230:07:25

# My feet are wet

0:07:280:07:29

# From thinking this thing over

0:07:290:07:32

# And it's been so long

0:07:330:07:35

# Since I felt the warm sunshine

0:07:350:07:38

# Just give me one good reason

0:07:400:07:44

# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:07:460:07:50

# Just give me one extra season

0:07:530:07:56

# So I can figure out the other four

0:07:580:08:02

# Just give me one good reason

0:08:050:08:08

# And I promise I won't ask for any more

0:08:100:08:14

# Just give me one extra season

0:08:170:08:21

# So I can figure out the other four

CHEERING

0:08:370:08:40

Charlie Landsborough, ladies and gentlemen.

0:08:400:08:44

-Fantastic, Charlie.

-Thank you, Daniel.

-Just wonderful.

0:08:440:08:47

You're a good lad.

0:08:470:08:48

Everybody knows Liverpool and nobody knows Birkenhead,

0:09:040:09:07

so I will forever be associated with this area,

0:09:070:09:10

as rough as it's become, and as abandoned as it's become.

0:09:100:09:13

I've become a bit abandoned myself, you know?

0:09:130:09:15

I finished up playing in this pub for 22 years and it doesn't look

0:09:410:09:45

much now but it was a real hub of music, comedy and excitement.

0:09:450:09:51

Wherever you go, and I've been to a number of different places,

0:09:510:09:53

they leave some sort of fingerprint upon your soul, you know?

0:09:530:09:58

And it comes out inevitably in songs.

0:09:580:10:00

# Sometimes I feel that I might break. #

0:10:000:10:03

You get so deflated and rejected and you think,

0:10:130:10:16

"Ah, it's not going to happen."

0:10:160:10:18

Especially when you start to get a bit older like I was, you know,

0:10:180:10:21

and the music business is full of young, good-looking people

0:10:210:10:24

and I'm neither of them, you know.

0:10:240:10:25

# Suddenly I'm equal... #

0:10:250:10:27

I remember sitting there singing in the Bogside in Derry

0:10:340:10:37

and the people were singing along with me and I got the sympathy vote

0:10:370:10:41

because they were saying, "This fella here, he wrote the songs.

0:10:410:10:44

"You know, and they're getting the credit for it."

0:10:440:10:46

The last time my next guest was on the show,

0:10:460:10:48

the phones never stopped ringing for weeks.

0:10:480:10:51

Will you welcome, please, Mr Charlie Landsborough?

0:10:510:10:53

# Everybody needs a little help sometimes. #

0:10:580:11:02

Suddenly I was thrust into these arenas

0:11:060:11:08

where people expect something of you.

0:11:080:11:12

So there was a mixture of sort of euphoria and trepidation, you know?

0:11:120:11:16

It was wonderful to have other people think something

0:11:260:11:29

of something that you love so much yourself, you know?

0:11:290:11:32

And to create something, whatever it is, and find that

0:11:320:11:36

it has an effect upon people is as good as it gets, I think.

0:11:360:11:39

Charlie, you're the youngest of a family of 11 children.

0:11:410:11:45

That must have been a lively house.

0:11:450:11:47

It seems hard to believe I was ever the youngest of anything,

0:11:470:11:49

doesn't it, Daniel? But there you go. It was a fantastic house.

0:11:490:11:52

I grew up in a house full of people, full of music and full of animals.

0:11:520:11:56

-We even had a monkey at one stage.

-My goodness.

0:11:560:11:58

Chickens and ducks,

0:11:580:12:00

which is very unusual for a dockside house in Merseyside, you know.

0:12:000:12:04

But it was wonderful. I had a very blessed childhood, I did.

0:12:040:12:07

And you were, I suppose you could say,

0:12:070:12:09

an overnight success after years of perseverance in the music business.

0:12:090:12:14

What was it like when the big break came?

0:12:140:12:16

Well, you only have to look at me

0:12:160:12:18

to realise that it was a very long overnight, Daniel, you know?

0:12:180:12:21

LAUGHTER

0:12:210:12:22

But when it happened, it was fantastic.

0:12:220:12:24

It was terrifying, actually, because I went from playing dockside pubs,

0:12:240:12:27

where I played for most of my life, and suddenly I was

0:12:270:12:31

thrown into these wonderful places like this with great expectations.

0:12:310:12:36

I was terrified but it was sort of...

0:12:360:12:38

It was wonderful at the same time.

0:12:380:12:40

Now, to date, you've written over 150 songs.

0:12:400:12:45

Where do you get your inspiration from?

0:12:450:12:48

Well, I listen to people.

0:12:480:12:50

I'm not a eavesdropper or anything like that...and people have

0:12:500:12:53

a happy knack of saying wonderful little things, you know.

0:12:530:12:56

And things happen. I always remember we were repairing an old car,

0:12:560:12:59

one of many that I had, and my brother-in-law was helping me

0:12:590:13:03

and we finally achieved what we were attempting to do

0:13:030:13:05

and I said, "Johnny, how do you do those things?"

0:13:050:13:08

And he said, "Charlie, that's a great title for a song."

0:13:080:13:11

So I wrote this romantic ballad, which has got nothing to do

0:13:110:13:14

with our old bangers, you know.

0:13:140:13:16

So I'm always listening. I work very hard.

0:13:160:13:18

I'm not that successful because I must have written thousands

0:13:180:13:21

and there's only a tiny percentage that's worth anything

0:13:210:13:24

but it's wonderful for the odd occasion

0:13:240:13:26

when you do sort of strike it and you think,

0:13:260:13:28

"Yeah, that's a proper song."

0:13:280:13:30

It's lovely to see you. And a lovely surprise, I have to say.

0:13:390:13:41

Yeah, I know, great to be here and great be back again in Newry.

0:13:410:13:44

And what brings you to Newry tonight,

0:13:440:13:47

to this particular Opry An Iuir?

0:13:470:13:49

Well, I came along, I must say, just to see a good friend of mine,

0:13:490:13:52

Charlie Landsborough, who I've known since I was about five years old.

0:13:520:13:56

My nan used to bring me to the Philharmonic in Liverpool,

0:13:560:13:59

when he played there once a year, to come and see him,

0:13:590:14:01

and he's been a good friend to me and...

0:14:010:14:05

a guy who's offered me a lot of advice and someone who's sang

0:14:050:14:09

a duet with me when I started out, you know, so he's a great fella.

0:14:090:14:12

This song is a little bit rocky for an auld fella like me

0:14:120:14:14

but it's sort of me when I was a lad and is called Counterfeit Man.

0:14:140:14:18

# I can't afford a night on the town

0:14:350:14:38

# Don't have no money to burn

0:14:380:14:40

# Life in the shadows is getting me down

0:14:410:14:45

# Seems everywhere that I turn

0:14:450:14:47

# I meet a brick wall

0:14:470:14:49

# I'm gonna knock 'em down some day

0:14:510:14:54

# I'm gonna walk tall

0:14:540:14:56

# Get off the wrong road

0:14:570:14:59

# I'm gonna find myself a better way

0:14:590:15:02

# That's for sure

0:15:020:15:03

# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:15:050:15:08

# I see them castin' glances at me

0:15:140:15:18

# With disapprovin' eyes

0:15:180:15:21

# If they keep looking

0:15:210:15:23

# They're gonna see

0:15:230:15:25

# Out of the ashes I'll rise

0:15:250:15:28

# There'll be a new dawn

0:15:280:15:30

# I'll put an end to all their mockin'

0:15:300:15:34

# Cos I'll be reborn

0:15:340:15:36

# I'll start a new life

0:15:370:15:39

# Never hear those hard times knockin'

0:15:390:15:42

# At my door

0:15:420:15:45

# Ain't gonna be a counterfeit man no more

0:15:450:15:48

# I'm gonna be the man that God made

0:16:280:16:31

# Ain't gonna settle for less

0:16:310:16:33

# From now on you'll get the real thing

0:16:350:16:38

# I'm being me

0:16:380:16:40

# I'm gonna be a success

0:16:400:16:43

# Yeah, yeah

0:16:430:16:45

# I can't afford a night on the town

0:16:480:16:51

# Ain't got no money to burn

0:16:510:16:53

# Life in the shadows is getting me down

0:16:550:16:58

0:17:310:17:35

CHEERING

0:17:470:17:52

-Tony, lovely to see you.

-Great to see you.

0:17:580:18:01

Charlie's songs are legendary

0:18:010:18:02

and that's why there's a packed house here at Opry An Iuir tonight.

0:18:020:18:06

-How do you think the night's going down so far?

-It's great.

0:18:060:18:09

It's great to see all his fans here tonight.

0:18:090:18:11

The minute he came out, he got a huge round of applause

0:18:110:18:14

and they're just sitting there listening to every word he says.

0:18:140:18:17

But he's that kind of a guy, isn't he?

0:18:170:18:19

# No better, no better

0:20:410:20:43

# I never shall be. #

0:20:430:20:46

-How are you?

-I'm all right.

-You're very welcome to Newry.

0:21:080:21:11

-It's great to see you.

-Lovely to see you.

0:21:110:21:13

-I'm delighted to be doing this.

-This is such a lovely song.

0:21:130:21:17

-You wrote this song?

-I did, yeah, a long, long time ago.

-It's gorgeous.

0:21:170:21:22

'And I was thinking along the lines of, like,

0:21:220:21:25

'regrets which we all have, you know

0:21:250:21:26

'and I think of things like, you know,

0:21:260:21:28

'I wish I'd have told me dad I loved him, you know.

0:21:280:21:30

'And I wish I hadn't done that.

0:21:300:21:32

'And out of that came this song, which is a love song, really,

0:21:320:21:34

'just called If Only and I'm delighted

0:21:340:21:36

'that you've agreed to do it and you like it.'

0:21:360:21:40

That sounds lovely. It does, honestly.

0:21:400:21:45

APPLAUSE

0:21:450:21:47

Will you please welcome up on stage with me

0:21:470:21:49

0:22:150:22:19

0:22:210:22:25

# I would surrender

0:22:280:22:32

# For one more tender night

0:22:320:22:38

SHE SINGS IN IRISH

0:23:180:23:24

SHE SINGS IN IRISH

0:23:260:23:31

# I'd give up each pleasure

0:23:400:23:44

# And all that I treasure

0:23:440:23:46

# If I could have you back again

0:23:470:23:52

# I've dreamed of ways

0:23:540:23:58

0:43:280:43:30

# If my eyes should ever fail me... #

0:43:570:44:02

0:44:210:44:24

# Fear is a mountain

0:44:380:44:41

# Love has scaled... #

0:44:410:44:43

-Oh, Charlie, my God.

-It's lovely to see you. You're looking great.

0:44:440:44:47

It is fantastic. You never change.

0:44:470:44:50

-Liar, but I love you.

-I know, I know, but I practise.

0:44:500:44:53

I've just realised this thing's in front of me.

0:44:540:44:57

-Isn't that incredible?

-Well, we made that over the weekend.

-Fantastic.

0:44:570:45:01

I tell you what, I'll do something for you, Nance.

0:45:010:45:03

-I'll save this especially for...

-Any song!

0:45:030:45:05

..especially for our Nance. We could have been here all day.

0:45:050:45:08

-But it's lovely to see you anyway.

-It's so good to see you.

0:45:080:45:11

-God bless you, Nancy.

-Really good.

0:45:110:45:13

Thankfully, I've got a lot of friends in here tonight

0:45:140:45:17

and I've got the wonderful... She's come all the way from Achill Island.

0:45:170:45:20

I've known these folk, the family, for a long, long time.

0:45:200:45:24

The wonderful Nancy Flynn, she's down there. I can see you.

0:45:240:45:27

So I'm going to play this for you.

0:45:270:45:30

WHOOPING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:300:45:33

# All those years I stumbled through

0:45:450:45:50

# Getting most things badly wrong

0:45:510:45:57

# God knows what I did to you

0:45:570:46:02

# Through my weakness

0:46:020:46:04

# You were strong

0:46:060:46:08

# I chose the words

0:46:120:46:16

# That hurt you most

0:46:160:46:19

# And I'm ashamed to say

0:46:190:46:23

# That often when you needed me

0:46:240:46:30

# I chose instead to walk away

0:46:300:46:37

# I must have caused such pain

0:46:400:46:43

# How wrong can one fool be?

0:46:460:46:50

# And yet for all I did to you

0:46:520:46:56

# I could never stop you loving me

0:46:580:47:02

# Now in all humility

0:47:320:47:37

# I lay my heart down at your feet

0:47:370:47:42

# And I surrender to the love

0:47:440:47:49

# That turned my bitter

0:47:490:47:52

# Into sweet

0:47:520:47:55

# I must have caused such pain

0:48:000:48:04

# How wrong can one fool be?

0:48:050:48:09

# And yet for all I did to you

0:48:110:48:16

# I could never stop you loving me

0:48:160:48:21

# I must have caused such pain

0:48:230:48:27

# How wrong can one fool be?

0:48:290:48:33

# And yet for all I did to you

0:48:350:48:40

# I could never stop you loving me

0:48:400:48:44

# And yet for all I did to you

0:48:460:48:52

# I could never stop you loving me. #

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:48:570:49:00

Thanks very much.

0:49:040:49:05

Well done, Charlie.

0:49:070:49:09

Fantastic.

0:49:090:49:10

-Will we try one, Charlie?

-Why not?

0:49:170:49:19

I think we should.

0:49:190:49:20

You know, I feel very privileged that Charlie chose this

0:49:200:49:23

to be the song we sing together.

0:49:230:49:25

Ah, good man.

0:49:250:49:27

APPLAUSE

0:49:270:49:29

# Everybody needs a little help sometimes

0:49:300:49:37

# No-one stands alone

0:49:370:49:40

# Makes no difference if you're just a child like me

0:49:420:49:47

# Or a king upon a throne

0:49:480:49:51

# For there are no exceptions

0:49:530:50:00

# We all stand in the line

0:50:000:50:05

# Everybody needs a friend

0:50:060:50:12

# Let me tell you of mine

0:50:120:50:17

BOTH: # He's my forever friend

0:50:190:50:23

# My leave-me-never friend

0:50:250:50:29

# From darkest night

0:50:310:50:34

# To rainbow's end

0:50:340:50:38

# He's my forever friend

0:50:380:50:43

# Even when I turn away He cares for me

0:50:460:50:52

# His love, no-one can shake

0:50:520:50:56

# Even as I walk away He's by my side

0:50:580:51:04

# With every breath I take

0:51:040:51:08

# And sometimes I forget Him

0:51:090:51:15

# My halo fails to shine

0:51:160:51:21

# Sometimes I'm not His friend

0:51:210:51:27

# But He is always mine

0:51:270:51:31

BOTH: # He's my forever friend

0:51:340:51:38

# My leave-me-never friend

0:51:390:51:44

# From darkest night

0:51:450:51:48

# To rainbow's end

0:51:480:51:53

# He's my forever friend

0:51:530:51:57

# If you still don't know the one I'm talking of

0:52:010:52:07

# I think it's time you knew

0:52:070:52:11

# Long ago and far away upon a cross

0:52:120:52:17

# My friend died for you

0:52:190:52:23

# So if you'd like to meet Him

0:52:230:52:29

# And don't know what to do

0:52:300:52:34

BOTH: # Ask my friend into your heart

0:52:360:52:40

# And He'll be your friend too

0:52:410:52:46

# He's my forever friend... #

0:52:480:52:52

Everyone.

0:52:520:52:54

# My leave-me-never friend

0:52:540:52:58

# From darkest night

0:53:000:53:03

# To rainbow's end

0:53:030:53:06

# He's my forever friend

0:53:060:53:11

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:53:440:53:47

AUDIENCE CLAPS TO THE BEAT

0:53:550:53:58

# Shine your light against the dark

0:54:040:54:09

# Stand upright and make your mark

0:54:090:54:12

# Do your best wherever you may be

0:54:120:54:17

# And shine your light for me

0:54:170:54:20

# Long ago when I was just

0:54:210:54:25

# A boy of tender years

0:54:250:54:30

# My father told me life's a road

0:54:300:54:34

# Paved with joy and tears

0:54:340:54:38

# And as you travel, you must choose

0:54:380:54:42

# Between what's right and wrong

0:54:420:54:46

# Remember sin is giving in

0:54:470:54:51

# For heaven's sake, be strong

0:54:510:54:54

# Shine your light against the dark

0:54:550:55:00

# Stand upright and make your mark

0:55:000:55:04

# Do your best wherever you may be

0:55:040:55:08

# And shine your light for me

0:55:080:55:11

# As I grew beyond my teens

0:55:130:55:17

# The world began to press

0:55:170:55:21

# My father's words began to fade

0:55:210:55:25

# Lost to selfishness

0:55:250:55:30

# And after years of walking down

0:55:300:55:34

# The wrong side of the track

0:55:340:55:38

# One night I cried and deep inside

0:55:380:55:43

# My father's words came back

0:55:430:55:45

# Shine your light against the dark

0:55:470:55:51

# Stand upright and make your mark

0:55:510:55:55

# Do your best wherever you may be

0:55:550:55:59

# And shine your light for me

0:55:590:56:03

# My father said that kindness is

0:56:040:56:08

-# The light of God in man

-The light of God in every man

0:56:080:56:12

# So I was told to shine like gold

0:56:120:56:17

# On everyone I can

0:56:170:56:20

# I saw the light, I saw the light

0:56:210:56:25

# No more darkness, no more night

0:56:250:56:29

# Now I'm so happy No sorrow in sight

0:56:290:56:34

# Praise the Lord, I saw the light

0:56:340:56:38

# Once I was wandering alone in my sin

0:56:380:56:42

# I wouldn't let my dear saviour in

0:56:420:56:47

# Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night

0:56:470:56:51

# Praise the Lord, I saw the light

0:56:510:56:55

# I saw the light, I saw the light

0:56:550:56:59

# No more darkness, no more night

0:56:590:57:04

# Now I'm so happy No sorrow in sight

0:57:040:57:08

# Praise the Lord, I saw the light

0:57:080:57:12

# Shine your light against the dark

0:57:120:57:17

# Stand upright and make your mark

0:57:170:57:21
