here, let's chat. Welcome to our tree house. Thank you for having me.

A beautiful view you've got from up here so thank you for having me. How

was your set, your Reading debut? I loved it. You can tell that the

crowd you know, are based off a heavy kind of rock foundation from

the past, even though they are quite a young crowd, they don't remember

that past, they are still loud and excited. As you can tell by the

screaming. Let it loose, release it! You were saying they are constantly

on the verge of moshing? Yes, they are a young crowd but probably don't

remember the days when it was pure rock festivals, it's excitable and a

blessing to perform in front of a crowd like that. It's a rarity.

There is a lot babies and kids here today. I saw a couple with the

little ear must haves on. Glad they started off young -- ear muffs.

Glastonbury have yummy mummies going through the mud with their buggies

going, we have to get there before it starts. I saw a few babies. In

terms of you and the album, we have had a few tracks and it's got Ain't

Nobody on there. When is the album out? Should be out early next year

hopefully. I've been away for a year-and-a-half, two years. I wanted

to take time to experience life and not write songs about being in the

back of a cab on the way to a show or on a tour bus, I wanted to

experience life and not cheat my fans, you know. I always hike to

give my full heart and soul in every bit of music I ever put out and yes,

I feel like I've achieved that and understood myself a lot more. I've

grown and learned a lot more about myself. While you were away, were

you travelling, seeing the world or sat at home on the PlayStation? No,

I did quite a lot of travelling, India, South Africa. A friend of

mine brought me out there to work on a project out there which changed my

life. I spent a bit of time in Jamaica recording and spent a bit of

time in New York recording as well. I recorded with someone who is

on-the-record who I met in New York. I was in New York with Idris Elba.

Some nice friends to have. Yes, Idris Elba is doing an album himself

in homage to studying Mandela because he played Mandela in a movie

and spent a lot of time in South Africa and around Johannesburg so he

brought me and Mr Hodgson out there, to work with South African

musicians. Really, it was to write a record to pay homage to the South

African people, the homage, the culture, the spirit, Mandela himself

and what Idris learnt being out there. It was a spiritual awakening

for me. If anyone's worked ever with South African musicians, the purity

is something I can't explain as a musician and opened my eyes to a

lotthings. You are taking your time with the new record which is a good

thing with experiencing these new things. Is it daunting to come to a

new festival for you and, when you walk out from the wings hoping

people will be there for you, because you have been away for a

while and not released an album so it must be daunting to be thinking,

oh, will there be anyone there. The weirdest experience was coming back

after two years and playing new song force the first time. For the first

record ah lot of the songs I'd be playing for years, I'd been

performing since I was 13 and 14 years of age in Ireland so we were

well trained before the first album came out and doing the songs off

that record. It was daunting to come out and do first material but I'm

very blessed and honoured that the crowd came out like they did today

and at Leeds on Friday. Massive crowd. It was brilliant.

coming up here. How you doing? Pretty good. Last year was your

first Reading in the dance tent. How did it compare to today? They were

completely mad, like we had moshing during our second song today and

last year as well. We played a song called UK shanty that no-one really

knows because it was never released as a single but there was a big

Moshe pit. There is not enough Moshing to vie Lynnses, not enough,

it's good to see! I like it when, I don't know the name of your band

mate, when he plays it like a little guitar. Yes. Your set earlier was

insane. The tent was completely rammed. The outskirts became

completely rammed and we had to move out of the tent just to be able to

dance. Cool. Could you tell how packed it was, seas of people coming

in and finding a way to stream into your pit? Yes. It was scary looking

out and you see it and it's a huge Hoared of people but it's exciting

as well. Obviously it was the dream to as big and as popular but did you

imagine this so soon? No. It doesn't feel that soon. We got together like

six years ago. We've been working together since then. The soonness

doesn't feel that short. We never expected to go to number one or be

in the pop charts at all really. Did you think you would ever play a

festival like Reading? I don't know. I'd never expected to be doing

anything like this at this stage. It's amazing. Did you guys go to

festivals when you were growing up, Reading or Leeds? I went to

Glastonbury when I was 16. That was my first festival. Yes, me too. We

were there at the same time but didn't know each other then. You

came to my attention a couple of years ago when I heard the song A

and I fell in love with the video and thought, who is this, what is

this, it's very different. It was your aim obviously to do something

different with pop music and it seems to have gone very, very well.

The success of Rather Be, did you ever think, that's a good one, when

you wrote that one? It's interesting. One of the first times

we played that was at Reading here, we'd been playing it live before we

recorded it properly, we were testing it out and I think yes one

of the reactions was at Reading and Leeds last year, we thought, oh,

yeah, this one is going down quite well, let's record it.

Understatement of the year! The song that knocked Pharrell's Happy off

the charts. What is coming up next? You have been on the road for for

ever? Yes, just more and more. We've got Ibiza rocks this week, then we

are off to the States for a month. Then a UK tour and then a European

Tour. How is it going in the States, as well as it is here? Yes, it's

cool I think. We are getting random updates. Rather Bewas number one on

the Shazam charts a couple of weeks ago. It's number four in iTunes or

something like that now. Yeah, we are doing our first tour there in

September and it's quite exciting. We've been to New York and LA before

but nowhere else. We are going to go to San Francisco and Portland and

loads places. Amazing. Long may it continue because I'm a big fan and I

think it's a really refreshing change to pop music and all the very
