the host in the last four. And more on the grass court tennis season. | :00:00. | :00:00.
That's all after the papers. Hello and welcome to our look ahead | :00:00. | :00:22.
to the papers. Easy bet Hardman of the Spectator | :00:23. | :00:29.
and Mr Creighton of the Daily Record join me and Richard Walker of the | :00:30. | :00:35.
Sunday Herald with is us too. We'll start with the Met row, | :00:36. | :00:41.
dedicating its front`page to the comedian Rik Mayall who's died at | :00:42. | :00:45.
the age of 56. The Express is reporting on the tomato extract that | :00:46. | :00:50.
could help thousands to prevent heart disease and strokes. The | :00:51. | :00:54.
maximum fine for speeding is to be quad Ruperted, rising to ?10,000, | :00:55. | :00:59.
according to The Telegraph. The Ofsted report into the schools in | :01:00. | :01:03.
Birmingham is the Guardian's main story. It's quoted Michael Gove as | :01:04. | :01:08.
saying schools must promote British values. The Financial Times says | :01:09. | :01:14.
moves from banks have experienced volcanotity in the global financial | :01:15. | :01:21.
markets. The Daily Record is marking the death of Rik Mayall's death. | :01:22. | :01:29.
Alex Salmond says he'll remain as leader if there is a no`vote too. | :01:30. | :01:35.
The Ofsted report features in the Times. The Daily Mail goes with the | :01:36. | :01:39.
story of the damning verdict by Ofsted. | :01:40. | :01:45.
The Guardian, all school must promote British values says Michael | :01:46. | :01:51.
Gove, the Education Secretary, seizes on Birmingham reports. I | :01:52. | :01:55.
suppose the next question is, what are British values? Indeed. | :01:56. | :02:04.
British values, he's paddling as quickly as he can on this day they | :02:05. | :02:16.
have had in the Commons. The reports in the Guardian tell us, as the | :02:17. | :02:22.
Ofsted report tells you, that the inspectors found narrow faith`based | :02:23. | :02:26.
idealogy, inappropriate use of school funds and five of the schools | :02:27. | :02:30.
have been put into special measures and all schools in England now, | :02:31. | :02:35.
because of course this Secretary of State of education in England only | :02:36. | :02:39.
will have to be taught the British rules of democracy, rule of law, | :02:40. | :02:43.
respect for gender equality, that kind of thing. Civic values you | :02:44. | :02:48.
could say. Isabelle, it's the kind of manifesto, I suppose you could | :02:49. | :02:54.
say that a lot of Tory voters would support, potentially UKIP voters? I | :02:55. | :02:58.
think so. I think it's probably not the worst set of headlines for | :02:59. | :03:04.
Downing Street after a week of dreadful headlines from this row | :03:05. | :03:06.
between Theresa May and Michael Gove. It's moved away from | :03:07. | :03:10.
tensionses in the Cabinet and on to the policy and the Government taking | :03:11. | :03:16.
control and on to this announcement of teaching British values, which | :03:17. | :03:21.
aside from this row about the Trojan Horse plot is something voters will | :03:22. | :03:25.
be very much in favour of. Richard in Glasgow, what would you suggest | :03:26. | :03:29.
British values are? Well, British values can be defined | :03:30. | :03:32.
by different people in different ways. Liberty and tolerance, that's | :03:33. | :03:38.
fine, great idea. I think what Michael Gove means though are | :03:39. | :03:42.
Christian values and I think the mixing of religion and education is | :03:43. | :03:47.
not always a great idea. I think you could might be asking some questions | :03:48. | :03:51.
about the relevance of Christian values in schoolsry are | :03:52. | :03:54.
overwhelmingly Muslim. Tolerance works both ways and I'm not sure | :03:55. | :03:59.
it's working both ways right now with some of the statements Michael | :04:00. | :04:02.
Gove is making. That's interesting. If we go to the Daily Express, page | :04:03. | :04:08.
2, the Trojan Horse, invasion of the classroom, that's at the top of the | :04:09. | :04:13.
page but it says crackdown on Muslim extremists in zoos. That's the issue | :04:14. | :04:19.
isn't it, these are schools which are overwhelmingly Islamic and that | :04:20. | :04:24.
is a dangerous dynamic isn't it? Potentially, if you are talking | :04:25. | :04:29.
about British values? The allegation of the charge of the Governors, | :04:30. | :04:36.
Islamic extremists interpretations of religion into schools and we talk | :04:37. | :04:41.
about British values. Richard is here as well, can you imagine if we | :04:42. | :04:44.
were talking about Scottish values, you know, if there were a Scottish | :04:45. | :04:46.
Secretary of State of education saying we were going to have | :04:47. | :04:49.
Scottish values in schools, you know, what are they? How do you | :04:50. | :04:53.
define the notion of Scottish identity and how do you teach the | :04:54. | :04:57.
schools? As Richard said, it's a modern thing as well as a civic | :04:58. | :05:03.
thing. It goes on to religious territory. These things are kind of, | :05:04. | :05:12.
you know, eating humble pie. ? Part of the problem though is that part | :05:13. | :05:15.
of what the British values is tolerance and acceptance of | :05:16. | :05:20.
traditional religion and if there's any viction that's being undermined, | :05:21. | :05:23.
that goes against the notion of what is British doesn't it Yes but that | :05:24. | :05:27.
would be the case you would hope for any School of Any religion. If you | :05:28. | :05:32.
had a hardline Christian school that was promoting intolerance to other | :05:33. | :05:36.
religions, if you had a for right group in a British school that was | :05:37. | :05:40.
promoting intolerance to other faiths, you would hope there would | :05:41. | :05:43.
be a similar crackdown because fundamentally British values are | :05:44. | :05:46.
about that almost lack of intensity where everyone is able to get on and | :05:47. | :05:49.
to agree regardless of what your faith is. That's the case for many | :05:50. | :05:53.
British Muslims, there's nothing on that list that they would disagree | :05:54. | :05:57.
with in terms of respect for one another, tolerance, personal | :05:58. | :05:59.
freedom, all that sort of thing. Sure. Richard, there's a slight | :06:00. | :06:05.
confusion in the mind of a lot of parents in some of the schools | :06:06. | :06:12.
because one of the establishments, Oldknow academy, Ofsted found the | :06:13. | :06:16.
achievement of pupils was outstanding, the quality of the | :06:17. | :06:19.
teaching was outstanding, yet it goes on to say the behaviour and | :06:20. | :06:24.
safety of the pupils is inadequate and the leadership and management | :06:25. | :06:27.
are inadequate. Are those things compatible? There are some odd | :06:28. | :06:31.
findings. Park View school two years ago was found to be outstanding, a | :06:32. | :06:36.
model for other schools and it's found be deficient in every single | :06:37. | :06:40.
category. I don't know what's happened in two years, but something | :06:41. | :06:47.
catastrophic's happened. Some of the examples that we are being told, for | :06:48. | :06:50.
instance of pupils being told the school doesn't believe in evolution, | :06:51. | :06:54.
well it's not just Muslim schools that teach that, there are other | :06:55. | :06:59.
schools in America which teach specifically that evolution didn't | :07:00. | :07:03.
happen. It was reported a couple of years back about a school teaching | :07:04. | :07:08.
that the Loch Ness monster existed so it's not just Muslim schools | :07:09. | :07:13.
which teach dubious facts if indeed the schools are teaching these | :07:14. | :07:18.
facts. Isabelle, is this really a statement on Ofsted? I was listening | :07:19. | :07:21.
to a former Chief Inspector of Schools who was saying today that | :07:22. | :07:25.
part of the problem with the way Ofsted looks at the whether schools | :07:26. | :07:29.
perform well or not is that they have simply a checklist of things? | :07:30. | :07:33.
They look at whether or not proper records are being kept, whether the | :07:34. | :07:37.
teachers are preparing lessons properly and examinations results, | :07:38. | :07:41.
easy to tick, tick, tick, but the atmosphere, you know, the underlying | :07:42. | :07:46.
ethos of the school, that's not looked at and for the first time, | :07:47. | :07:50.
some people are suggesting with this investigation they have had to do | :07:51. | :07:53.
that? I suppose that's the problem with any public service, it can't | :07:54. | :07:57.
just be a tick box exercise that manages to glide over what's | :07:58. | :08:00.
probably quite obvious to the inspectors is a problem. I think one | :08:01. | :08:03.
other thing to come out of this that is positive is the debate about | :08:04. | :08:08.
having no notice inspections. This would be fennel bishop for all | :08:09. | :08:13.
teachers anyway because if you get notice of an Ofsted inspection, your | :08:14. | :08:18.
school goes into mayhem for 24 hours as the school tries to spruce itself | :08:19. | :08:30.
up `` beneficial for all teachers. Once again, this is clever by Gove. | :08:31. | :08:34.
He talks about British values, who can object against that, and he | :08:35. | :08:40.
talks about the snap inspections, dawn raids, anyone outside the | :08:41. | :08:43.
profession would think it was a great idea, I don't know how it | :08:44. | :08:48.
would look if you were a teacher or Ofsted inspector. It's about how | :08:49. | :08:53.
else do you manage the performance, setting parameters and ticking boxes | :08:54. | :08:58.
at the end of the day, but I'm sure Ofsted inspectors and teachers, | :08:59. | :09:04.
there is an element of them thinking about that. Let's move on to the | :09:05. | :09:18.
daily Telegraph, Gordon Brown urges for a debate between the Prime | :09:19. | :09:31.
Minister and Alex Salmond. One would guess you would agree with this? Yes | :09:32. | :09:36.
and we have argued that for some time now. On the one hand David | :09:37. | :09:40.
Cameron is saying independence for Scotland would be a disaster and he | :09:41. | :09:44.
will fight for the union, on the other hand he is saying it is not | :09:45. | :09:50.
really an issue for me, it is up to Scotland to decide. I don't think | :09:51. | :09:55.
you can save those two things and be credible for very long. He has come | :09:56. | :10:01.
to Scotland and issued his edicts. It seems perfectly reasonable for | :10:02. | :10:05.
the Prime Minister of the UK, if it is he says he is passionate about | :10:06. | :10:09.
saving the union, that doesn't extend to a debate with the First | :10:10. | :10:14.
Minister of Scotland? It is a bit strange. I'm sure the pressure will | :10:15. | :10:23.
grow. Do you see number ten caving in? I don't think so. It is | :10:24. | :10:28.
something David Cameron wants to avoid because he doesn't want Alex | :10:29. | :10:36.
Salmond to make this about Scotland versus the Eton boys in Westminster. | :10:37. | :10:40.
Whilst he cannot stay away from it, he is wise to stay away from a | :10:41. | :10:50.
specific debate. Do you agree? Yes, but Gordon Brown seems to be saying | :10:51. | :10:55.
contrary things. He gave a very good speech about how Scotland was moving | :10:56. | :11:00.
away from the parliament to the people. He warned that Better | :11:01. | :11:11.
Together and David Cameron had the wrong idea by train to make this an | :11:12. | :11:15.
argument of Scotland versus Britain. He said Britain would lose that | :11:16. | :11:21.
argument, and at the same time he says David Cameron should have a | :11:22. | :11:26.
debate with Alex Salmond, which is exactly the ground that Gordon Brown | :11:27. | :11:32.
doesn't want the debate to be on. Alex Salmond would be licking his | :11:33. | :11:36.
lips tonight but David Cameron will never give him a debate on less | :11:37. | :11:45.
Better Together were suddenly 20 points behind. It is difficult for | :11:46. | :11:49.
the politicians to do this, they had to come up with jokes and be more | :11:50. | :11:56.
thoughtful. We are dreadful people! We expect jokes but also a | :11:57. | :12:01.
philosophical underpinning, which Gordon Brown did today, he was very | :12:02. | :12:09.
good. You just had to decide which storyline went best, and that one | :12:10. | :12:16.
was the slip`up, saying David Cameron should debate. I am welling | :12:17. | :12:24.
up here, Gordon Brown being bullied by hard`hearted hacks. He has been | :12:25. | :12:36.
doing it not `` long enough... The daily record, and Alex Salmond says, | :12:37. | :12:40.
I will stick around for the 2016 pole. Would you be happy with that? | :12:41. | :12:49.
Yes, if he has a job to do. He is in the job because he got a landslide | :12:50. | :12:52.
result of the last election despite the fact the election voting system | :12:53. | :12:57.
was designed to avoid just such a result so he is clearly popular | :12:58. | :13:01.
insofar as his position of running the country and I don't see any | :13:02. | :13:06.
reason why he should stop doing that if he fails to win the referendum, | :13:07. | :13:11.
which I don't believe he will. A very interesting statistic that men | :13:12. | :13:14.
are divided equally as to whether they will vote yes or no, women, two | :13:15. | :13:20.
thirds at the moment are in the know camp. Why is that? `` no camp. It | :13:21. | :13:34.
would be a very brave man to explain that and I am not that man. I don't | :13:35. | :13:38.
want to sound patronising and generalising. There was one woman in | :13:39. | :13:47.
a piece that Alan Little did, and I am going to ask you is the only lady | :13:48. | :13:52.
among us, who said the blokes probably won't do enough research or | :13:53. | :13:57.
know all the details and they are led by emotion. I also read that it | :13:58. | :14:04.
is because women worry about the household finances and apply the | :14:05. | :14:07.
same thinking to national politics. I cannot give you any insight into | :14:08. | :14:14.
what a normal woman thinks because I am obsessed with select committees | :14:15. | :14:18.
and that sort of thing. It is very interesting, and as we have been | :14:19. | :14:21.
seeing over the last few weeks and months, the yes campaign has been | :14:22. | :14:27.
doing better in the polls, but still at the moment it is a call that the | :14:28. | :14:39.
no campaign are going to win. A young one, Rik Mayall has died at | :14:40. | :14:45.
the age of 56. Yes, shocking news, a young man. Everyone will remember | :14:46. | :14:51.
him, anyone who has ever shared a flat with a few other blokes in the | :14:52. | :14:57.
1970s always had Rik Mayall in their flat, home raging ego who never did | :14:58. | :15:03.
anything. A very skilled guy, he will be missed. A bit like Mel | :15:04. | :15:09.
Smith's last year. The light goes out and he will be fondly | :15:10. | :15:14.
remembered. You are all going to be back with us for another look at the | :15:15. | :15:19.
stories behind the headlines in about an hour. Stay with us because | :15:20. | :15:23.
at the top of the hour we will have more on the Ofsted report into a | :15:24. | :15:27.
number of schools at Birmingham and its implications. But coming up now, | :15:28. | :15:33.
I think they are going to be talking about football in Sportsday. | :15:34. | :15:38. |
