It's the sport that prompted a memorable line. "Where Were the

:00:59.:01:15.

Germans? And frankly, who cares? ." Great Britain's women have 12 medals

:01:16.:01:31.

but they have never been to the Olympic final. Holland are the

:01:32.:01:37.

reigning European champions, they are going for their third Olympic

:01:38.:01:41.

gold in succession. The Dutch, formidable, but hopefully, not a

:01:42.:01:49.

task beyond words. Great Britain are in the Olympic final. For Kate

:01:50.:01:57.

Richardson-Walsh and her team, this is their moment, the gold medal

:01:58.:02:01.

match for the very first time in a history of women's hockey in Great

:02:02.:02:04.

Britain, they are into the file. This could be the biggest moment in

:02:05.:02:13.

hockey ever, because going back to 1988, that final took place at 6am

:02:14.:02:17.

on a Sunday morning, this is happening at nine o'clock, and pets

:02:18.:02:20.

are even watching it if the Internet is anything to go by. It will be an

:02:21.:02:26.

incredibly interesting match, at a Diadoro, a lot of Team GB athletes

:02:27.:02:29.

are there to support them. The blue pitch will be familiar, it

:02:30.:02:32.

is what they have been training on. The man who has coached them to this

:02:33.:02:37.

stage is Danny Perry and he is with Rishi Persad. For the last 48 hours,

:02:38.:02:40.

there has been a lot of hype and expectation. Is it something the

:02:41.:02:42.

team has been embracing or something you have kept out of their ear shot

:02:43.:02:45.

and concentration? It will be difficult to stop the noise.

:02:46.:02:47.

Everywhere, people have been wishing us luck and it is difficult to avoid

:02:48.:02:51.

that to an extent. The job of the staff and the athletes is to keep

:02:52.:02:54.

feet firmly on the floor and we have done that pretty well. We have had a

:02:55.:02:57.

good recovery today at the British School, and stuck to what we do,

:02:58.:03:00.

which isn't that exciting but has served us well so far. I think we

:03:01.:03:04.

have handled it very well and I think we are in the right place for

:03:05.:03:09.

this next match. How much does the focus of one more game, one game

:03:10.:03:14.

could change the history, although you have already created history, it

:03:15.:03:17.

could change it even further, how much does that play on your mind or

:03:18.:03:22.

the team's mind? We try not to get ahead of ourselves, we try to think,

:03:23.:03:26.

OK, what is the job when the ball gets pushed back, what do we do

:03:27.:03:31.

next? I think in doing that, we have consistently performed. I think we

:03:32.:03:35.

are aware of the ramifications of the gold-medal versus a silver

:03:36.:03:41.

medal, but we know we have already inspired a nation, inspired a future

:03:42.:03:44.

generation of hockey players, that is kind of in the bag, that is done.

:03:45.:03:49.

This really is about, what do we do at pushback, what we did after that

:03:50.:03:53.

and staying in the moment. That is the secret of success. What do you

:03:54.:03:57.

do against the Netherlands? They are going for three gold medals in row.

:03:58.:04:02.

As you say, three in a row and they have won the last two World Cups. So

:04:03.:04:07.

they have a great record, the foremost team in the world. They

:04:08.:04:13.

have some key players and we have to be diligent with those, and they

:04:14.:04:17.

play up particular style which is broad and wide and we have to make

:04:18.:04:20.

that work against them and exploit some of the opportunities that

:04:21.:04:24.

presents. So just stick to what we need to do when it matters most,

:04:25.:04:27.

look after the key players and execute. You have given a few bits

:04:28.:04:32.

of advice there. Is there one thing your team have to do tonight one

:04:33.:04:36.

thing they have to do above everything else to give of their

:04:37.:04:42.

best? I keep -- thing keep doing what you are doing, work hard for

:04:43.:04:46.

each other. This is the personality of the team and if they keep working

:04:47.:04:50.

for each other, we will be in good shape.

:04:51.:04:53.

Thank you be a time, we wish you the very best of luck.

:04:54.:04:57.

And Danny deserve so much credit for what he has done with the team,

:04:58.:05:02.

incredible strength in depth, seven different scorers so far with Alex

:05:03.:05:06.

Danson and Richardson was leading the way but everyone making a

:05:07.:05:08.

contribution and look at the difference over the last 12 years.

:05:09.:05:14.

In 2004, they didn't qualify for the Olympics, in 2008, they didn't get

:05:15.:05:18.

out of the group, in 2012, they won the bronze medal and here they are

:05:19.:05:23.

with a shot at goal. Kat Downes was behind-the-scenes in the stands with

:05:24.:05:26.

friends and family when they won the most important match so far, the

:05:27.:05:27.

semifinal. Alex Danson does what she does best.

:05:28.:05:46.

It is a gold for Great Britain. Great Britain have won it, they have

:05:47.:05:52.

defeated Argentina. Scores. Great Britain at the moment, the top team

:05:53.:05:57.

in the Olympic tournament. Sets up a semifinal against the black sticks,

:05:58.:06:00.

New Zealand. So this is it, the Olympic

:06:01.:06:04.

semifinal. Great Britain beat New Zealand four years ago in London to

:06:05.:06:09.

win bronze. Can they beat them again in Rio and give themselves a chance

:06:10.:06:12.

to go for gold? Terrific atmosphere tonight here at

:06:13.:06:19.

the Diadoro Olympic hockey Stadium. It has come to Thomson. It is wide.

:06:20.:06:24.

New Zealand coming forward at pace. They have a shot on goal. No, it is

:06:25.:06:27.

wide again. :. Saved. The drag flick. It is

:06:28.:06:40.

pushed home, it is scored. Alex Danson gets the first goal of the

:06:41.:06:45.

match for Great Britain. Really good first half of hockey. They have got

:06:46.:06:49.

everything there, they have trained so hard, they are not likely to let

:06:50.:06:54.

it go at this point. I admire your optimism. Fingers crossed.

:06:55.:06:59.

Everything crossed. You have come dressed to the occasion. And we are

:07:00.:07:04.

loving it, the crowd is unreal. Every person is screaming on GB and

:07:05.:07:09.

we are nailing it. You have worked up quite a sweat banging the drum.

:07:10.:07:13.

We have, but it has been worth it. Apparently, they are complaining,

:07:14.:07:17.

the New Zealanders but they will have to pry it from our dead hands

:07:18.:07:21.

before we give it up. We are going on. New

:07:22.:07:24.

possession one more time. Maddie Hinch off the line. Can they clear

:07:25.:07:34.

it? Here is Danson, she has found Helen Richardson-Walsh. Can she is

:07:35.:07:40.

caught? Penalty stroke. Penalty stroke awarded. And scores. And this

:07:41.:07:45.

is promising. As Lee. Penalty stroke again! Danson to put Great Britain

:07:46.:07:53.

three nil in front. She has got it. Danson scores per second, Great

:07:54.:08:00.

Britain are in the Olympic final! They have done it, they are through

:08:01.:08:05.

to their first Olympic final with seven wins out of seven. Can they

:08:06.:08:11.

now make it eight for a gold? This is wide, your daughter is an Olympic

:08:12.:08:16.

finalist. I know, we have worked so hard this, they are not going to

:08:17.:08:20.

lose it now, in for a gold medal chance there. Nicola, your mum and

:08:21.:08:26.

are so proud. I am so happy, the girls are ecstatic and I am sure the

:08:27.:08:29.

parents are as well. They are a of this journey as much as we are. So

:08:30.:08:33.

proud, the whole team were absolutely brilliant that game. What

:08:34.:08:39.

you saw today was the old will squad performance, people putting their

:08:40.:08:41.

bodies on the line, thinking clearly under pressure and doing the right

:08:42.:08:46.

thing at the right moment. Everybody, to a woman, stood up and

:08:47.:08:50.

did their job today. And for Kate Richardson-Walsh, this

:08:51.:08:56.

becomes her 375th cap and this will be her last match as captain. Here

:08:57.:09:01.

is the starting line-up. Maddie Hinch in goal. Crista Cullen has

:09:02.:09:07.

recovered from a bash in the semifinal and Alex Danson going so

:09:08.:09:16.

strongly. Georgie Twigg was injured in the semifinal, she will be used

:09:17.:09:19.

as a substitute and Helen Richardson-Walsh picked up a leg

:09:20.:09:22.

injury when she collided with the goalkeeper. She is also fit and will

:09:23.:09:27.

becoming off the subs bench. So it is a very strong squad, a strong

:09:28.:09:31.

starting line-up and they will of course use their substitutes. Mel, I

:09:32.:09:36.

know you were so excited when they got through to the final, are you

:09:37.:09:41.

feeling calm now? Not at all. The teams have come out to warm up and

:09:42.:09:45.

the atmosphere is already building. There is a huge following for the

:09:46.:09:49.

Dutch, naturally, but the Brits are doing their best to hold their own

:09:50.:09:53.

in the stands. Have you managed to talk to any of them all see how they

:09:54.:09:57.

were moving? I am thinking of Helen Richardson-Walsh, she is on the subs

:09:58.:10:02.

bench but that she looked fit and healthy? I spoke to Danny Kerry and

:10:03.:10:06.

asked him that question and he said Helen was fitness tested this

:10:07.:10:08.

morning and held her hands up and said if she is not 100%, she won't

:10:09.:10:13.

take the field. She said it isn't about her, but about the team and

:10:14.:10:17.

she came through it and it is a massive plus for the team. We talk

:10:18.:10:22.

about her wife Kate, who is captain, but for Helen, this is her fourth

:10:23.:10:26.

Olympics and she has come back from to back injuries that required

:10:27.:10:32.

surgery. She is an amazing story. They both are, she is so

:10:33.:10:36.

competitive, so highly driven and motivated and I think I speak for

:10:37.:10:40.

every British man that we hope they come off with a gold medal around

:10:41.:10:45.

their necks. Kate Lyster said her motto is "Feel the fear but do it

:10:46.:10:50.

anyway" -- Kate likes to say. Do you sense any fear from them? Not at

:10:51.:10:57.

all, it is what they wanted to do. Speaking to the Dutch press, it was

:10:58.:11:00.

the one team they didn't want to play, the Brits, and I can see it

:11:01.:11:03.

being a physical encounter and many of the girls have got into the

:11:04.:11:07.

mindset of the Dutch. I hope a lot of people will be tuning in back

:11:08.:11:13.

home. When they last met in the Euro league final, Great Britain won on

:11:14.:11:16.

penalties, it may have been England then, but Maddie Hinch played a

:11:17.:11:21.

crucial role. She is phenomenal in the shoot out but you have to get

:11:22.:11:24.

through 60 minutes of hockey before you get to that stage. She plays

:11:25.:11:28.

club hockey at Holkham but she will go into the Dutch league next year,

:11:29.:11:32.

so she will want to go there having one up on them and she is quoted as

:11:33.:11:37.

saying some of her new team-mates have already said, "Enjoy wearing

:11:38.:11:42.

that silver." She is one who will want to prove a point. Definitely.

:11:43.:11:46.

Mel, we will talk to you later, good luck with everything tonight. It

:11:47.:11:56.

will be sensational. There will be a wonderful atmosphere, a lot of

:11:57.:11:58.

British support but the Netherlands are a very strong side and the

:11:59.:12:01.

defending Olympic champions for the last two Olympic cycles. Before

:12:02.:12:04.

pushback, we have time to catch up on one of the newer supports here,

:12:05.:12:09.

BMX biking and news first on the Liam Philips, Britain's contender in

:12:10.:12:13.

the men's, who crashed out in the early stages. Team GB released a

:12:14.:12:17.

statement saying that following the crash, Liam suffered concussion that

:12:18.:12:20.

required further assessment in hospital as a precaution and has

:12:21.:12:23.

been discharged under medical supervision. The put up a lovely

:12:24.:12:27.

letter on social media where he thanked everybody who had got him

:12:28.:12:32.

back and to the start line in Rio, including the surgeons and physios

:12:33.:12:36.

and his girlfriend Jess Varnish. It is a brutal sport and when it comes

:12:37.:12:40.

to the final, it really is all or nothing. Here is the women's final

:12:41.:12:46.

first. The excitement building there, out

:12:47.:12:52.

on the outside line, Elke Vanhoof, very consistent, a top-10 finisher

:12:53.:12:57.

in all three Supercross races held so far in this calendar year.

:12:58.:13:01.

Next to her, from France, Manon Valentino, the world championship

:13:02.:13:12.

bronze-medallist three years ago. Last year's world champion next to

:13:13.:13:16.

her from Venezuela, Stephanie Hernandez. If she wins, she will

:13:17.:13:20.

become the first Venezuelan woman to ever win an Olympic gold medal. It

:13:21.:13:28.

is going to be tough in lane six. Speaker 989, Yaroslava Bondarenko

:13:29.:13:33.

from Russia, 19 years of age, fifth in the World Championships this year

:13:34.:13:37.

-- number 89. From the United States, one of two

:13:38.:13:50.

USA riders, Alise Post. World silver-medallist two years ago.

:13:51.:14:01.

Brooke Crain, fourth in the world championship last year, from

:14:02.:14:03.

California. Eighth in the Olympic final in London.

:14:04.:14:08.

Laura Smulders from the Netherlands. The Olympic bronze-medallist from

:14:09.:14:21.

London. A big roar from the crowd, big start. World champ, defending

:14:22.:14:28.

Olympic champion -- Big Star. Mariana Pajon from Colombia.

:14:29.:14:38.

Huge expectation, it seems like the whole crowd is Colombian. Can she

:14:39.:14:48.

deal with the pressure? Those eight riders get one shot at gold now. The

:14:49.:14:51.

BMX Olympic final. Bursting out of the gate. Pajon

:14:52.:15:01.

nearest the cam ra, good start made by Alise Post from the United

:15:02.:15:05.

States. Pajon has the inside track. Jumps the triples, through turn one,

:15:06.:15:11.

Valentino of France is down at the first turn. Pajon leads. The crowd

:15:12.:15:15.

beside themselves with excitement, being chased all the way by the

:15:16.:15:18.

American rider, Alise Post in second. Hernandez of Venezuela is

:15:19.:15:22.

third. Through the rhythm section they go. One more turn to go. Here

:15:23.:15:25.

they come now, into the finishing straight. She's going to do it for

:15:26.:15:31.

Colombia, Mariana Pajon successfully defends her world title. She beats

:15:32.:15:35.

Alise Post of the United States to the line. The Venezuelan, Stefany

:15:36.:15:40.

Hernandez, takes the bronze. What a moment, what a rider. The crowd have

:15:41.:15:43.

got what they came to see, a Colombain Gold Medal.

:15:44.:16:03.

The tough thing for him is being out in lane eight. He has won a world

:16:04.:16:18.

title from the outside lane. Eighth in the championship final. Connor

:16:19.:16:23.

Fields USA, seventh in the Olympic Games seven years ago. Former World

:16:24.:16:25.

Cup winner. Is this to be the greatest moment of

:16:26.:17:06.

the 25-year-old's career? From the United States, Nick Long.

:17:07.:17:15.

World bronze medallist, earlier in the summer. Now the two Aussies.

:17:16.:17:26.

Anthony Dean in the green helmet. Superbly consistent in the semifinal

:17:27.:17:36.

and in the quarters. Sam Willoughby, two time Olympic champion, Olympic

:17:37.:17:43.

Silver Medallist in London. His fiance, Alise Post, has just taken

:17:44.:17:50.

the silver in the women's race. Caroline Buchanan there who would

:17:51.:17:53.

have loved to have been in the women's final.

:17:54.:18:01.

The Gold Medal awaits for one of these eight.

:18:02.:18:07.

Riders ready, watch the gate... Away they go in the Olympic final.

:18:08.:18:17.

Leading on the inside, Sam Willoughby. Good start by Connor

:18:18.:18:23.

Fields. Round the first corner. The Australian has lost his way. It's a

:18:24.:18:26.

one, two for the United States at the moment. Nick Long leads the way.

:18:27.:18:34.

Connor Fields in second place. USA one, USA two. Nick Kimmann

:18:35.:18:42.

challenging moment. Here up towards the line. It's going to go to the

:18:43.:18:48.

USA. And Connor Fields is the Olympic champion ahead of Jelle Van

:18:49.:18:54.

Gorkom and Nick Long grabs the bronze for the Americans. They are

:18:55.:18:59.

victorious. Connor Fields, who went into the Olympic final four years

:19:00.:19:03.

ago as the favourite, but ended up in seventh place, delivered in the

:19:04.:19:11.

biggest race of his life. The USA stretch their lead at the top of the

:19:12.:19:14.

medals table. More British contributions today. Here are the

:19:15.:19:15.

headlines.. Nick Skelton has become Great

:19:16.:19:24.

Britain's first ever individual Olympic showjumping champion. The

:19:25.:19:29.

58-year-old went clear on Big Star to become Britain's oldest Gold

:19:30.:19:37.

Medallist for over a century. Boxer Joe Joyce is guaranteed at

:19:38.:19:42.

least a Silver Medal after winning through to Sunday's superheavyweight

:19:43.:19:46.

final, where he'll aim to succeed Anthony Joshua as Olympic champion.

:19:47.:19:54.

Nice moves, Joe! Lutalo Muhammad is into the semifinals of the men's

:19:55.:20:03.

taekwondo 80 kg division. The semifinals are 9. 15pm tonight live

:20:04.:20:08.

on BBC Four. And Canada beat Brazil 2-1 to win

:20:09.:20:11.

the bronze medal in the women's football. The second consecutive

:20:12.:20:15.

bronze for the Canadians. The host will be hoping the men's team can

:20:16.:20:19.

provide them with Olympic cheer in tomorrow's final. We're building up

:20:20.:20:24.

to the women's hockey final. Before they headed out here to Rio, I had

:20:25.:20:29.

the chance to catch up with three of the key players, captain, Kate

:20:30.:20:33.

Richardson-Walsh, goalkeeper Maddie Hinch and a woman who will be one of

:20:34.:20:38.

the main attacking threats, Georgy Twigg. They knew they were on the

:20:39.:20:41.

verge of something special, even then.

:20:42.:20:48.

COMMENTATOR: Great Britain have won the bronze medal. Have you noticed

:20:49.:20:59.

much more interest in you and in hockey generally since the Olympics?

:21:00.:21:04.

Yeah, definitely. The recent Europeans, we were sold out at Lee

:21:05.:21:08.

Valley. Participation of hockey has definitely grown since London 2012.

:21:09.:21:12.

You know, my hockey club at the weekend, we have at least 900 kids,

:21:13.:21:17.

maybe a thousand kids turning up, which is fantastic. Last August, the

:21:18.:21:21.

European Championships were staged in London. What happened? So, we got

:21:22.:21:30.

into the final and we were up against the Netherlands, the current

:21:31.:21:32.

Olympic and world champions. We battled through to the end and got

:21:33.:21:36.

to the shootout. COMMENTATOR: That will do very

:21:37.:21:39.

nicely indeed. England are the champions. Maddie Hinch is the hero

:21:40.:21:46.

of England! I think we've got every chance of winning a Gold Medal.

:21:47.:21:49.

We've shown that now as we've just really progressed as a side and

:21:50.:21:52.

started to pick up more medals along the way. The Europeans, even though

:21:53.:21:56.

it was England, was a massive turning point as a programme and as

:21:57.:22:00.

a group. Not having quite ever reached that Gold Medal standard

:22:01.:22:03.

meant you never really quite fully understood what it took to get there

:22:04.:22:07.

or what it feels like. I remember afterwards thinking straight away,

:22:08.:22:10.

if that's what a European Gold Medal feels like, what on earth would an

:22:11.:22:15.

Olympic Gold Medal feel like? It's given everyone that extra push to

:22:16.:22:18.

make sure we go out there and give it our absolute best and leave no

:22:19.:22:23.

stone unturned and be ready. COMMENTATOR: A fantastic

:22:24.:22:24.

performance. What a tournament they've had. Yet to lose a match.

:22:25.:22:30.

They've won the most important one so far, comfortably. How much home

:22:31.:22:37.

work do you do on the opposition, as well as working on your own

:22:38.:22:43.

technique and strength and game, how much are you mugging up on them?

:22:44.:22:45.

Many, many hours. Our coaching staff, we have an analyst, Amber is

:22:46.:22:50.

just phenomenal, what she does and how she breaks the game down. We can

:22:51.:22:56.

go up there and look at any game, in I player, any Ed its, any moment of

:22:57.:23:01.

the game and she can pull it out and we look at it in detail. We can slow

:23:02.:23:07.

mo it and get it from a couple of angles. Hours are spent, OK, I'm

:23:08.:23:11.

going to likely play against these forwards, what do they do. What do

:23:12.:23:14.

they revert to under pressure, what is their type? And how do I need to

:23:15.:23:20.

play against that? When we go to tournaments, that's our strength and

:23:21.:23:23.

Danny's strength as coach, is the tactical set up. It's one of the

:23:24.:23:26.

best in the world. COMMENTATOR: Great Britain are in

:23:27.:23:33.

the Olympic final. And here we go. Everything they have prepared for

:23:34.:23:36.

will now come down to this match against the Netherlands, a rematch

:23:37.:23:39.

of the European Championships, same rules, if it's a draw at the ebbed

:23:40.:23:44.

of the -- end of the four quarters, it goes straight to penalties.

:23:45.:23:46.

Maddie Hinch will be prepared for that. Let's hand you over to Rishi.

:23:47.:23:55.

Hearts beating, just a bit faster, palms are sweaty. Simon alongside me

:23:56.:23:59.

looking cool. We've spoken a lot about the significance of this

:24:00.:24:03.

match. Not just for Great Britain's women's team, but in the history of

:24:04.:24:07.

British teams, taking part in the Olympics, for all time. It's huge.

:24:08.:24:13.

This could have an impact across so many different sports to give a

:24:14.:24:17.

belief that those groups of people who come together collectively, it's

:24:18.:24:20.

a different dynamic. This could prove that the investment in those

:24:21.:24:24.

team sports are wholly worthwhile and will have long-lasting effects.

:24:25.:24:30.

Danny's team has overcome every challenge so far. Unbeaten in seven

:24:31.:24:34.

matches coming into the final. The Dutch, though, provide a whole new

:24:35.:24:39.

test and a whole new challenge. They have such a wellth of experience.

:24:40.:24:43.

They're going for their third Gold Medal. The Olympics is such a

:24:44.:24:46.

different competition. It doesn't mat wear you've done at Europeans

:24:47.:24:48.

and worlds. This is about Olympic experience. There are so many

:24:49.:24:52.

distractions. Great Britain have tried to shut themselves off from

:24:53.:24:57.

those. They've talked about just one more game. After the semifinal

:24:58.:25:03.

success, Danny, Kerry and Kate were saying keep their feet on the floor

:25:04.:25:06.

and do everything they've done in every match so far. But of course,

:25:07.:25:10.

they have been dealt all the interest and hype that everyone's

:25:11.:25:15.

put on them. Around the village, the teams just preparing to come out,

:25:16.:25:17.

everyone wishing them luck. It's hard to get away from that. How do

:25:18.:25:23.

they keep focussed? By doing the leg work before they get here. They know

:25:24.:25:26.

that everything they've done, the preparation, and that's what it's

:25:27.:25:29.

about, it's about that instinctive and intimate knowledge and belief in

:25:30.:25:33.

yourself so there are no questions left. They're not walking out to

:25:34.:25:39.

this cacophony of noise thinking, what do we do now? They will have

:25:40.:25:43.

prepared for. It it's getting to the first whistle with the composure

:25:44.:25:46.

they need. The two teams are out. This is the final line-up. It's the

:25:47.:25:52.

first final for Great Britain in their history. Time for the National

:25:53.:25:54.

Anthems. Emotions running high, Simon, a last

:25:55.:27:54.

word on what we can expect in the final. Passion, intensity, two

:27:55.:27:59.

groups of players who've prepared for four years to get to this point.

:28:00.:28:03.

They'll leave it all out there. There isn't time for doubt. It's

:28:04.:28:06.

about knowing what you've done, trusting that preparation, putting

:28:07.:28:08.

it into practice, make your coach happy. As you say, four years of

:28:09.:28:13.

blood, sweat and tears, literally. Even in the semifinal, we saw it

:28:14.:28:18.

from Crista Cullen and Georgy Twigg. We are ready. Can daddy Kerry's team

:28:19.:28:26.

climb the mountain one more time? Time to head to the commentary box.

:28:27.:28:34.

COMMENTATOR: Good evening everybody. Yes, we're ready here for 60 minutes

:28:35.:28:39.

of blood, sweat and ultimately tears, one way or the other. The

:28:40.:28:44.

stands are filling up, almost at capacity now.

:28:45.:29:03.

The by-line from Kate Richardson-Walsh was "nice and calm"

:29:04.:29:09.

in the huddle. Alyson Annan-Thate the coach of the Netherlands had a

:29:10.:29:13.

strange moment in the semifinal, after the fourth quarter she went

:29:14.:29:17.

into the huddle and started giving instructions to the players, saying,

:29:18.:29:21.

keep your marking tight, play the ball crisply, keep an eye on each

:29:22.:29:25.

other. The players said, coach, it's a penalty shootout. She wasn't

:29:26.:29:29.

aware. She'd lost her way in the match. Blamed it on the heat of the

:29:30.:29:34.

sun. Didn't matter ultimately, they won the shootout. Here they are in

:29:35.:29:38.

the Gold Medal match. The Dutch will be playing in their change strip of

:29:39.:29:43.

grey, attacking the goal away to our left.

:29:44.:29:54.

Great Britain in their favoured all red strip. Hitting away to our

:29:55.:30:00.

right. Hold tight, here we go. A gold medal on the line. Crista

:30:01.:30:20.

Cullen, bruised, battered and scarred after her countless displays

:30:21.:30:24.

of courage throughout this tournament. Cullen number five for

:30:25.:30:31.

Great Britain, on the right. Taken off in the semifinal, returned with

:30:32.:30:34.

eight stitches in her forehead ten minutes later. Time to say good

:30:35.:30:40.

evening to melt flew low. Good evening, everybody -- Mel Clewlow. I

:30:41.:30:50.

haven't seen a group of players so focused in my life. To know they are

:30:51.:30:54.

playing for an Olympic gold medal, it is not only fantastic for hockey,

:30:55.:30:59.

it is fantastic for British sport and I join lots of you at home

:31:00.:31:04.

hoping they come back with the ultimate prize. Alex Thomson's ball

:31:05.:31:09.

just run out of play. She is Great Britain's top scorer in the

:31:10.:31:20.

tournament so far, with five goals. Hollie Webb gets stuck in. The the

:31:21.:31:29.

break forward, the Dutch are threatening in the early stages.

:31:30.:31:38.

Laura Unsworth, as ever, reliable. So far, Laura Unsworth has been

:31:39.:31:44.

absolutely unshakeable at the back. She mops up anything that any of the

:31:45.:31:49.

marking players can't get to. She has the free role and more often

:31:50.:31:52.

than not, she is in the right place at the right time. First touch for

:31:53.:31:57.

Susannah Townsend. She could be a game changer for Great Britain this

:31:58.:32:00.

evening with her speed across the pitch and her close contact all

:32:01.:32:10.

skills. Sophie Bray. Loses possession. Free hit to Holland.

:32:11.:32:15.

This is one of their danger players, van As. That was a good return, but

:32:16.:32:24.

not as precise as she was hoping for. Ellen Hoog. Van As will try and

:32:25.:32:30.

slide it into the circle. The tackle comes in from Hollie Webb. Nicola

:32:31.:32:36.

White back to Hollie Webb, who thought about going aerial.

:32:37.:32:42.

Eventually plays it off the Dutch ship and web will restart -- sheen.

:32:43.:32:50.

The fascinating matchup for me this evening is I don't think the Dutch

:32:51.:32:59.

have a very fast backline at all, will mean boss place in the middle,

:33:00.:33:05.

Paramount, they are not the quickest players, they will be up against the

:33:06.:33:11.

likes of Alex Townson, Townson, all have pace. Danny Kerry in the

:33:12.:33:15.

familiar red baseball cap, compelled every step of the way. Kate

:33:16.:33:21.

Richardson-Walsh playing her final international tonight. Unsworth in a

:33:22.:33:31.

forward position. Owsley back to Unsworth. A little turn and go to

:33:32.:33:35.

Hannah MacLeod. Drifting forward. Add to the left. That was McCallan

:33:36.:33:47.

who fail to get stick on board. Van Male did a good job tracking her but

:33:48.:33:50.

then lost out on the ball came through. I don't think McCallan

:33:51.:33:55.

realised how fortunate you was to be in that much space. Not often we

:33:56.:34:00.

have seen it in the tournament but that is OK, it is allowed to happen.

:34:01.:34:06.

That is off the foot of Laura Unsworth, free hit right on the

:34:07.:34:09.

halfway line. Four quarters of 15 minutes each. The gold medal match

:34:10.:34:17.

in the women's Olympic hockey tournament. Naomi van As on the

:34:18.:34:25.

left. Good acceleration. Maddie Hinch aware that there wasn't a

:34:26.:34:29.

touch on it, just allowed the ball to pass through her legs and strike

:34:30.:34:35.

the backboard. It is a tough ask but if Great Britain can score first,

:34:36.:34:38.

that is where you start to get into the minds of the Dutch. They are so

:34:39.:34:42.

used to winning matches, that winning mentality. They are not used

:34:43.:34:46.

to going behind and you sometimes see a different Dutch team coming

:34:47.:34:52.

out, they don't know what to do. Susannah Townsend quick to react

:34:53.:34:57.

once the ball went to lose. -- went loose.

:34:58.:35:02.

I think Helen Richardson-Walsh does have some strapping on her hamstring

:35:03.:35:07.

to help without injury. Here goes Sophie Bray. That is good skills.

:35:08.:35:14.

Decided to take it on. Ultimately held up by will mean boss. Verschoor

:35:15.:35:25.

for the Netherlands -- Willemijn Bos. Crista Cullen restarts. Back to

:35:26.:35:35.

Laura Unsworth. Across to Kate Richardson-Walsh. Now Sam Quek is on

:35:36.:35:40.

the left. Her pass is poor. It has been intercepted by the Netherlands.

:35:41.:35:43.

Maddie Hinch might have to make a save. Penalty stroke for the Dutch.

:35:44.:35:52.

Sam Quek unfortunately went to ground. Laura Unsworth made the

:35:53.:35:56.

legwork back, Sam Quek did so well, she made the mistake. You can see

:35:57.:36:03.

Sam Quek going to ground, she didn't take the ball and as a result of

:36:04.:36:09.

that, she takes the player and it is absolutely right by Michelle Joubert

:36:10.:36:14.

to give the penalty stroke, and it is Paumen stepping up against Maddie

:36:15.:36:24.

Hinch. Holland's top scorer with four, the chance to make it five and

:36:25.:36:28.

put the Netherlands 1-0 up in the gold medal match. Paumen versus

:36:29.:36:36.

Hinch. It's been saved! Hinch to the rescue. What a start for the Great

:36:37.:36:44.

Britain goalkeeper. Fantastic save but for a world-class player, it is

:36:45.:36:48.

a poor stroke by Paumen, almost putting it down the middle, hoping

:36:49.:36:53.

that Hinch takes a step to her left. One thing Hinch does is her

:36:54.:36:54.

homework. Owsley down the right to Helen

:36:55.:37:05.

Richardson-Walsh. A lot of strapping on that leg after the injury in the

:37:06.:37:13.

semifinal. De Waard heading forward for the Netherlands. After feet of

:37:14.:37:21.

Helen Richardson-Walsh. It goes to show what pressure does to, well,

:37:22.:37:27.

without doubt, one of the best players in the world. The pressure

:37:28.:37:31.

has got to hand maybe it is a sign that the on top of their game.

:37:32.:37:36.

Georgie Twigg picking it up on the 23. She has got a lot of ground

:37:37.:37:42.

here, into the Dutch half. Now they attack again. Cullen watching it

:37:43.:37:47.

every step of the way inside and read perfectly by Kate

:37:48.:37:50.

Richardson-Walsh, who has released Owsley on the right. She has Alex

:37:51.:37:59.

Townson inside. Can't find her. Lily Owsley doing the right thing, trying

:38:00.:38:04.

to go towards the support, which was Alex Townson. Sometimes when she has

:38:05.:38:08.

ten or 15 yards in front of, just put the ball into space and get the

:38:09.:38:13.

legs ticking over. She is a nightmare to try and catch up to

:38:14.:38:14.

when she is at full speed. Chance for the Netherlands to build

:38:15.:38:24.

another move forward down this right flank. In front of the orange clad

:38:25.:38:31.

supporters behind. Lots of red white and blue, obviously the flag of the

:38:32.:38:38.

Netherlands and the union flags dotted around the stadium. There is

:38:39.:38:40.

the save again. Unsworth thinks about throwing it

:38:41.:38:47.

forward. Weight sensibly and gives Alex Townson the chance to pick up

:38:48.:38:53.

some speed. A little reverse pass to the left. Great Britain have three

:38:54.:38:59.

on the edge of the circle. Townsend tackled.

:39:00.:39:07.

Georgie Twigg missed her tackle. Van As is heading forward. Can they

:39:08.:39:14.

threaded through for another shot on goal? Saved again. Have they given a

:39:15.:39:23.

corner? Penalty corner awarded to the Netherlands. Let's see what

:39:24.:39:27.

happened here. Possibly coming off the legs of Richardson-Walsh. The

:39:28.:39:34.

long corner has been given, I think the two umpires had a conversation.

:39:35.:39:40.

It came off the stick, not the body. Sometimes we talk about the pressure

:39:41.:39:43.

on the players in these matches but you also have to remember, it is the

:39:44.:39:48.

pinnacle of an umpire's career, so it is great to see these two working

:39:49.:39:51.

well together early on in a massive match. From a British point of view,

:39:52.:39:58.

it was fortunate they conferred, cancelled the penalty corner. Great

:39:59.:40:02.

Britain with possession, aerial ball looking for Nicola White. Quick move

:40:03.:40:09.

forward. Owsley trying to chase it down.

:40:10.:40:16.

Sophie Bray. In a bit of a tangle. Taken quickly. Helen

:40:17.:40:23.

Richardson-Walsh waiting in the centre of the circle. After legs and

:40:24.:40:30.

this time it is scored! Great Britain are in front, Lily Owsley

:40:31.:40:35.

strikes! Exactly what we wanted to see, Britain getting the goal on the

:40:36.:40:40.

board first. Paumen this a stroke and four minutes later, fantastic

:40:41.:40:46.

skills by Sophie Bray, taking on three players by herself. Get the

:40:47.:40:53.

shot away. Sombroek with the save but Owsley the first to react with

:40:54.:40:59.

the ball. Sophie Bray has the skills and the ingenuity to unlock the very

:41:00.:41:05.

best defensive combinations. Lily Owsley was on hand to finish the

:41:06.:41:13.

job. Six minutes left in the first quarter of the gold medal match.

:41:14.:41:23.

Sophie Bray busy again, this time in midfield. The Dutch are coming

:41:24.:41:30.

forward with speed. Appeals for a penalty corner. It was just on the

:41:31.:41:35.

edge, I think it hit Sam Quek's foot, but outside of the circle.

:41:36.:41:40.

Sensibly pushed behind and this time, the penalty corner is awarded.

:41:41.:41:45.

It has been awarded because the umpire felt that Hollie Webb

:41:46.:41:49.

deliberately played the ball off the backline. I have got to be honest,

:41:50.:41:53.

at this level, you can't put that down as a poor trap. The movement of

:41:54.:41:58.

the stick goes towards the baseline, so it is the correct decision. The

:41:59.:42:08.

number 13 on the left-hand side, van Maasakker and Paumen on the right.

:42:09.:42:16.

Paumen, who missed the penalty stroke, could be the target.

:42:17.:42:22.

They have reshuffled, the Dutch. It is Paumen's drag flick. Saved by

:42:23.:42:34.

Hinch again, and behind. Big left-hand glove save again by Maddie

:42:35.:42:39.

Hinch. Paumen going across the goal but you can see Maddie Hinch

:42:40.:42:43.

stepping out, she is reliant on Hannah MacLeod taking the stick

:42:44.:42:47.

side, running anything down and getting hit. Maddie Hinch took a

:42:48.:42:52.

huge step to her left side and was able to bat the ball away.

:42:53.:42:56.

Hannah MacLeod goes inside. That is a great pass forward. Looking for

:42:57.:43:05.

McAllen. Hannah MacLeod again pushes it into the circle. The Dutch

:43:06.:43:10.

defence is a bit desperate. One more time on her way through. Hannah

:43:11.:43:16.

MacLeod is a tenacious talent. The Dutch will be aware that she rarely

:43:17.:43:17.

feels any pain. -- Alex Danson. When you're talking

:43:18.:43:44.

about Hannah MacLeod, for me, personally, she is the unsung hero.

:43:45.:44:02.

She is not worried about whether she is on the scoreboard or not. It is

:44:03.:44:03.

not a criticism of any of the is on the scoreboard or not. It is

:44:04.:44:04.

forwards or anyone else, but Hannah MacLeod knows her job and it allows

:44:05.:44:04.

Sophie Bray, Lily Owsley, Alex Townson, to play how they want to

:44:05.:44:05.

play. She puts the body armour on and runs no-one and gets hit. Sophie

:44:06.:44:10.

Bray was loitering. Van As with the pass down the line

:44:11.:44:19.

to Ellen Hoog that was too strong. Sam Quek ready to restart. She has

:44:20.:44:34.

been rock solid throughout this tournament, played some sensational

:44:35.:44:40.

hockey at times. Bit of a misunderstanding between Hollie Webb

:44:41.:44:45.

and Sam Quek. Taken quickly into the circle. Unsworth calm under pressure

:44:46.:44:50.

as ever, releases it to the outer edge of the circle. Trying to get it

:44:51.:44:57.

back into a shooting opportunity. It is brought clear by Susannah

:44:58.:44:58.

Townsend. Danson has Nicola White ahead of who

:44:59.:45:13.

was raising her stick and calling for it. One thing Britain have been

:45:14.:45:16.

exceptional at in the tournament is their team defence and their circle

:45:17.:45:19.

defence in particular. Getting their feet out of the way but managing to

:45:20.:45:24.

pick the ball off the opponents' sticks. That is important when you

:45:25.:45:29.

have cowman and van Maasakker as potential drag flick is from the top

:45:30.:45:31.

of the circle -- Paumen. Great Britain's ball. Umpire wanted

:45:32.:45:45.

it taken from the right place. Cullen sends it back to Laura

:45:46.:45:46.

Unsworth. Nicola White takes it out of the

:45:47.:46:02.

evening sky. The match started in daylight. It gets dark quickly here

:46:03.:46:07.

in mid-winter in Rio. The flood lights are on. There's Hanna

:46:08.:46:14.

Macleod. Van Maasakker has picked up an injury here. Hanna Macleod as she

:46:15.:46:20.

tries to tap the ball down into the turf she catches the knee cap. Quick

:46:21.:46:25.

ice pack and miss the last two minutes, back for the second

:46:26.:46:26.

quarter. Grazed knee and she's off. That's what I mean about team

:46:27.:47:08.

defence. All 11 players back, building a red wall around the

:47:09.:47:12.

circle. When you see the Dutch crashing a ball in from 35 metres

:47:13.:47:16.

out from the goal, you've got to think you're on top of them at this

:47:17.:47:18.

particular moment. Umpire has asked for the clock to be

:47:19.:47:56.

stopped. The decision has been given for dangerous. The question is being

:47:57.:48:00.

asked whether it should be a penalty corner. Though it hit Unsworth

:48:01.:48:04.

unions the knee. That's deemed to be the defender's, I mean this in the

:48:05.:48:10.

nice way, it's good that she's one of the smallest players on the

:48:11.:48:13.

field, but her knee is closest to the field any way. She's had worse

:48:14.:48:17.

in her career and indeed in these Olympic Games.

:48:18.:48:30.

Great Britain attempt to wind down the clock. 15 minutes done in the

:48:31.:48:41.

Gold Medal game. The Netherlands 0, Great Britain 1. A great start for

:48:42.:48:49.

Great Britain. And they had to soak up a lot of pressure. Let's look the

:48:50.:48:59.

the first goal if we can. What magnificent skill from Sophie Bray.

:49:00.:49:03.

She takes the ball to the air. Defenders know you can step in. The

:49:04.:49:06.

ball is three inches across. Then it's in mid-air to make a clean

:49:07.:49:09.

tackle is so difficult. The defenders didn't. They stepped away.

:49:10.:49:16.

Bray bustled through, got the shot on and then Owsley on hand. Both

:49:17.:49:22.

players there fantastic. Lily Owsley looks so calm. Looking at the save

:49:23.:49:26.

Maddie Hinch has produced, she has been one of the MVPs of the

:49:27.:49:30.

tournament for me. What about the first from the penalty stroke? Mel

:49:31.:49:34.

Clewlow said that Maddie does her home work. She will have studied

:49:35.:49:39.

video footage of every stroke that Paumen has taken for years. She will

:49:40.:49:44.

have a black book and she read it right. She anticipated Hinch

:49:45.:49:48.

stepping one side. She didn't. Good save. Good save and from the penalty

:49:49.:49:52.

corner. Paumen didn't get hold of it. It's not the class we've seen

:49:53.:49:56.

from her. It's a good height from Maddie. She read it correctly. Big

:49:57.:50:01.

left hand in the world. It wasn't a world class flick. The pace this

:50:02.:50:06.

game is being played at is quite outstanding. For those of you at

:50:07.:50:10.

home, I hope they appreciate the effort of these athletes. It's

:50:11.:50:15.

turnover turnover because of that pace. It comes straight back with

:50:16.:50:19.

interest. Whether they can sustain this, I have no idea. It will be

:50:20.:50:23.

impressive if they do. One thing we know, is that Great Britain are

:50:24.:50:26.

beautifully conditioned. They are in the peak condition of their careers.

:50:27.:50:30.

They're ready for a pace that they're currently going at the

:50:31.:50:33.

moment. Let's head back up and rejoin Mel and Matt.

:50:34.:50:37.

Thank you, Rishi. The second quarter about to get under way. Great

:50:38.:50:45.

Britain lead the Netherlands by 1-0. No change of ends after the first

:50:46.:50:49.

quarter. That will happen at halftime. On

:50:50.:51:20.

Sticks are locked together there. The Dutch have broken away.

:51:21.:51:30.

It's a goal. It's scored by Kitty Van Male. No referral. It's outside

:51:31.:51:46.

the 25. Hollie Webb needed to do more as the final back defender.

:51:47.:51:54.

Kate Richardson-Walsh is taken out of the equation. Webb does

:51:55.:51:58.

everything she can. The speed at which Van Male is running at

:51:59.:52:03.

unsettles Hinch a bit. She realises she's not going to make a save. Into

:52:04.:52:08.

the roof of the net, 1-1. Gutting from a British perspective because

:52:09.:52:11.

it's a mistake that's led to that goal. Inside the first minute of the

:52:12.:52:21.

second quarter. The Dutch are level. Goal in the first quarter from Lily

:52:22.:52:27.

Owsley. The equaliser from Kitty Van Male.

:52:28.:52:41.

Somebody took a hit. Owsley doubled over. Recovers quickly. Lily Owsley

:52:42.:52:56.

is another one checked over by the physio after earning the second

:52:57.:52:59.

penalty stroke which led to the third British goal in the semifinal.

:53:00.:53:03.

She landed awkwardly on her right shoulder. You'll see the strapping

:53:04.:53:04.

on her shoulder. Solid defending from Webb. There's

:53:05.:53:47.

going to be a card here. It's been shown to Crista Cullen for elbowing.

:53:48.:53:55.

Crista Cullen will get a two-minute suspension. Numerical advantage for

:53:56.:54:03.

the next couple of minutes for the Netherlands.

:54:04.:54:13.

The Dutch are seizing on every missed trap and every pass that

:54:14.:54:22.

comes up short from the Great Britain team. Starting to settle

:54:23.:54:27.

down, the Netherlands, now and playing

:54:28.:54:29.

-- and playing with more fluidity. Paumen thought about going with the

:54:30.:54:34.

aerial ball. Great play from Georgie Twigg.

:54:35.:54:57.

Fantastic play. Crista Cullen sitting out for two minutes with the

:54:58.:55:01.

eight stitches in her head from the semifinal. This is what the Dutch do

:55:02.:55:06.

to you in a game. The Dutch swarm around and try to bully you. They

:55:07.:55:10.

try and intimidate you, I guess, that's why they're one of the best

:55:11.:55:14.

sides in the world and ranked number one. From a British perspective,

:55:15.:55:18.

when they get the opportunities, which is what Lily Owsley did in the

:55:19.:55:20.

first half, you have to take them. The shot is wide from Naomi Van As.

:55:21.:55:38.

Turnover ball again by Britain. The ball falls to Naomi Van As for the

:55:39.:55:43.

second time. Giselle Ansley does well to close it down.

:55:44.:55:53.

Can Great Britain, if they just get a ten-second patch of possession,

:55:54.:55:59.

calm things down. They're under pressure defensively one more time.

:56:00.:56:15.

Hanna Macleod was calling for it. That's good, calm play by Danson

:56:16.:56:22.

coming back to help the team-mates out at the back. And the willness of

:56:23.:56:26.

Nicola White and Hanna Macleod to get ahead of the ball is brilliant.

:56:27.:56:44.

Georgina Twigg and Samantha Quek switch flanks.

:56:45.:57:04.

Constant offensive movement from end to end in this second quarter. The

:57:05.:57:09.

Dutch have really raised the pace of the game.

:57:10.:57:28.

Off a Great Britain foot. It is a penalty corner. The Netherlands

:57:29.:57:38.

giving Great Britain a piece of their own medicine. Free hit taken

:57:39.:57:47.

quickly. Giselle Ansley not able to see the ball coming through. But

:57:48.:57:50.

these moments you can't afford to give to the Dutch. Maartje Paumen

:57:51.:57:57.

doesn't miss very often. Maddie Hinch getting some water down

:57:58.:58:06.

her before she has to keep her eyes on either Paumen or, who is

:58:07.:58:10.

alongside her? Number 13, Van Maasakker.

:58:11.:58:19.

Hirge hinge gets down sharply. Double save from Maddie Hinch.

:58:20.:58:33.

Hinge has put on a goal -- Hinch has put on a goal keeping master class

:58:34.:58:43.

so far in this Gold Medal match. Still no let up in the pressure. The

:58:44.:58:52.

Dutch keep coming forward. This is the corner from Maartje Paumen.

:58:53.:58:57.

Tries to whip the ball using all her body. She shapes as if she's going

:58:58.:59:00.

to put it one side. Then whip it's the other side. Fantastic double

:59:01.:59:10.

save from Hinch. Kate Richardson-Walsh tried to get

:59:11.:59:48.

underneath it. Good interplay. Ellen Hoog find it on the right. --

:59:49.:00:12.

finds it. Incredible tension around the arena

:00:13.:00:32.

tonight. 1-1 in the Olympic gold medal match. The Dutch the defending

:00:33.:00:38.

champions, they have won it in London four years ago, they won the

:00:39.:00:44.

title in Beijing in 2008 as well. Looking for the hat-trick. Great

:00:45.:00:48.

Britain, bronze-medallists last time out. Van As, quick turn and take. To

:00:49.:01:04.

her right van den Heuvel. Runs into trouble. Still the pressure mounts.

:01:05.:01:12.

Another cross coming in. It was too far behind the Dutch attacker. The

:01:13.:01:16.

Dutch with all of the possession at the moment and they are inside the

:01:17.:01:18.

circle with van As. I didn't see any foot. Just

:01:19.:01:36.

listening out for what it was for. We are asking for a penalty corner,

:01:37.:01:41.

OK? I thought they were checking whether the ball had gone over the

:01:42.:01:50.

line from van As's shot. He is van As's shot, it was clear of the line.

:01:51.:01:57.

Was there a foot. It looks like Sam Quek's stick from that angle. The

:01:58.:02:05.

video umpire will have several angles to look at. That one was

:02:06.:02:11.

inconclusive. I don't think she has hit better one on the back and that

:02:12.:02:15.

hasn't gone in. On the replays we have seen, it looks like Sam Quek's

:02:16.:02:27.

stick, rather than her knee. Restart with a penalty corner and the

:02:28.:02:30.

Netherlands keep their referral. Penalty corner for the Dutch, the

:02:31.:02:34.

decision has been made, no further argument or discussion required. It

:02:35.:02:41.

was interesting, some of the British defenders were behind the goal

:02:42.:02:43.

putting on defensive equipment, which is sometimes a sign. Third

:02:44.:02:54.

penalty corner for the Netherlands. Van Maasakker is there. Potential

:02:55.:03:03.

change for the drag flicker. Paumen has taken the previous two. The

:03:04.:03:13.

third one... Well defended. Well done, Lily Owsley. Interesting

:03:14.:03:16.

decision from the Dutch to go with the slap of the top because it takes

:03:17.:03:20.

longer to get the ball into the circle. Clearly looking for tips and

:03:21.:03:25.

touches because they haven't been able to beat Maddie Hinch with a

:03:26.:03:33.

direct flick off the top. Well, this long period of sustained Dutch

:03:34.:03:42.

pressure continues. It seems to have taken up most of the second quarter

:03:43.:03:47.

so far and there is no end in sight. More Dutch players coming forward.

:03:48.:03:52.

Maddie Hinch diving desperately. Another penalty corner advantage. It

:03:53.:03:59.

is a difficult ball -- dangerous ball of Kate Richardson's stick.

:04:00.:04:06.

There is no way it is an advantage. You can see Michelle Joubert giving

:04:07.:04:09.

the penalty corner sign. Fourth one to the Dutch so far. Van Male's goal

:04:10.:04:17.

in the first minute of the second quarter has ignited this Dutch run

:04:18.:04:23.

of pressure. Paumen is back on the edge, van As will inject. Paumen the

:04:24.:04:35.

likely target. It is a goal for the Netherlands! 2-1 in front in the

:04:36.:04:37.

gold-medal game. Paumen, one of the best at drag

:04:38.:04:48.

flicking in the world, has been unable to boot magic Hinch so

:04:49.:04:55.

decides to take the ball and hit it herself -- beat Maddie Hinch.

:04:56.:05:01.

Richardson-Walsh on the goal-line is unable to it. I don't know if Maddie

:05:02.:05:06.

Hinch will be disappointed with this or not. To be fair to Paumen, she

:05:07.:05:12.

has got the ball a few inches off the turf and it has bounced in and

:05:13.:05:19.

around Maddie Hinch. It is probably about the 198 goal she has called

:05:20.:05:22.

for her country and she celebrates it like it is her first. It is

:05:23.:05:27.

heartbreaking to see it going but you have do admire her passion. This

:05:28.:05:32.

group of players, playing as England at the time in the European finals

:05:33.:05:36.

last year, where 2-0 down to the Netherlands before fighting back and

:05:37.:05:40.

winning on a penalty shoot out, so they won't lose faith at all. 2-1

:05:41.:05:44.

with four and a half minutes left until half-time. Great Britain on a

:05:45.:05:50.

rare attack. The flick inside from Helen Richardson-Walsh. It has

:05:51.:05:56.

fallen kindly for Owsley. Chance for:. Crista Cullen has scored!

:05:57.:06:02.

Crista Cullen brings Great Britain level. I said you don't get many

:06:03.:06:10.

chances against the Dutch and when you do, you have to take them.

:06:11.:06:13.

Crista Cullen finds herself in acres of space in the Dutch circle. I am

:06:14.:06:21.

not sure what Sombroek expected to seek. It is a shocker for Sombroek

:06:22.:06:26.

but any British fans are not going to care. Crista Cullen with the

:06:27.:06:31.

slap. Sombroek's foot, whether it gets stuck in the turf, is

:06:32.:06:34.

irrelevant and within a minute of Paumen giving Holland the lead,

:06:35.:06:41.

Crista Cullen equalisers. Wearing a bandage on the scar of the head

:06:42.:06:47.

injury she picked up, eight stitches in the semifinal. What time strike

:06:48.:06:52.

back, with the Dutch having just gone ahead. Let's see if that can

:06:53.:06:56.

just give Great Britain an extra level of momentum. Four minutes left

:06:57.:07:05.

in the half. 2-2. Townsend on the break down the right. Townsend

:07:06.:07:10.

continues to surge forward until she is eventually held up. Bouncing

:07:11.:07:18.

ball, watched and controlled by Kate Richardson-Walsh. She looks to set

:07:19.:07:23.

up Sophie Bray. Bit of a collision between Sophie Bray and one of the

:07:24.:07:32.

Dutch midfielder is. -- midfielders. When you are comparing goalkeeping

:07:33.:07:35.

performances as well, Maddie Hinch has made a couple of quality saves,

:07:36.:07:39.

which gives you confidence as a team. Sombroek has faced two shots

:07:40.:07:44.

and conceded two shots. Whether she could have done anything on the

:07:45.:07:48.

first is irrelevant but the second one, she definitely could have done

:07:49.:07:51.

and that is going to upset you as a defensive unit. Lily Owsley inside,

:07:52.:07:58.

into space. Settling things down for Great Britain. Long thumping pass

:07:59.:08:03.

forward from Giselle Ansley. Taken quickly. Looking for Sophie

:08:04.:08:21.

Bray. Wonderful ball juggling skills. This is where she is at her

:08:22.:08:30.

best. It is a fantastic cake by Verschoor to take it off the end of

:08:31.:08:34.

Sophie Bray's stick -- fantastic take. It is so difficult when they

:08:35.:08:38.

are bouncing it in the air like Sophie Bray does.

:08:39.:08:45.

Crista Cullen, who has just scored Great Britain's second, back in her

:08:46.:08:54.

more regular defensive position. Great Britain yet to have a penalty

:08:55.:08:59.

corner. Cullen could be involved if and when they do. Sophie Bray leaves

:09:00.:09:06.

it. Sent high, searching for Hannah MacLeod.

:09:07.:09:22.

Paumen forward to van Male. Van Male holds it up, fires it off Alex

:09:23.:09:36.

Danson's leg. It has been such an absorbing half of hockey, it is hard

:09:37.:09:39.

to believe there is only a minute and a half left of the first half.

:09:40.:09:45.

To see four goals in an Olympic final already is quite impressive.

:09:46.:09:51.

Could be more to come, still plenty of time left on the clock. Great

:09:52.:09:55.

Britain back to defending, where they have spent most of this

:09:56.:10:01.

quarter. The Dutch trying to unlock this defence. It is often a foot.

:10:02.:10:06.

Control by Laura Unsworth but it will be van As with the restart. Out

:10:07.:10:08.

to the right. Another aerial ball in search of

:10:09.:10:30.

Alex Danson, but it doesn't find her. Last 30 seconds of the first

:10:31.:10:41.

half. Level pegging here, 2-2. Last meaningful attack opportunity is

:10:42.:10:48.

missed and the Dutch will just keep possession now, pass it between

:10:49.:10:52.

themselves and count down to half-time. Helped by some of the

:10:53.:11:00.

supporters here at the Diadoro Olympic Hockey Centre. So the

:11:01.:11:03.

players head off to replenish their energy levels. Half-time here in the

:11:04.:11:11.

gold-medal match. The Netherlands two, Great Britain two. Rishi

:11:12.:11:16.

Persad. That was just about the most wonderful 15 minutes of hockey you

:11:17.:11:21.

could imagine. The Dutch equaliser, Simon, was just stunning

:11:22.:11:25.

counterattacking. Yes, the Dutch are swarming the ball carrier so when

:11:26.:11:33.

Great Britain come forwards, they swarm around them and then attack as

:11:34.:11:37.

a unit. It is not one-on-one, it is three on one at times and it was an

:11:38.:11:41.

exceptional finish once van Male went around Maddie Hinch. They look

:11:42.:11:47.

so incisive when attacking and deserved equaliser. Then they

:11:48.:11:50.

carried on attacking, Great Britain camped in their own final third of

:11:51.:11:54.

the pitch and they get the goal but puts them to one up. In big Games,

:11:55.:11:59.

Britain have ridden the look little bit, defended deep and it is a

:12:00.:12:02.

tactic they are comfortable with but it did look like they were inviting

:12:03.:12:07.

too much pressure. The corner that came to put them 2-1 up was

:12:08.:12:11.

fantastically improvised, you don't see many of them these days, but a

:12:12.:12:18.

good finish. And it was fair to say that it looks like they could get

:12:19.:12:22.

more. They were dominant, the Dutch ran through channels with such pays,

:12:23.:12:26.

finding the extra player deep in the circle on the baseline. -- such

:12:27.:12:31.

pays. But the good thing about the British team, whenever they get a

:12:32.:12:36.

chance, they take it. Yes, and never holding anything back. They know

:12:37.:12:40.

they have confidence and individual abilities so they go. Not the

:12:41.:12:46.

cleanest donation from a goalkeeping point of view, not one the Dutch

:12:47.:12:51.

goalkeeper will be proud of. No, not a moment she will put in her

:12:52.:12:55.

personal highlights diary. Crista Cullen bawled her beautifully with a

:12:56.:12:59.

slower ball, basically, through the legs. Maddie Hinch in contrast has

:13:00.:13:04.

had a wonderful first. 2-2, finely poised here.

:13:05.:13:09.

CLARE BALDING: think I everyone is pretty tense. Great for Crista

:13:10.:13:13.

Cullen, who came out of retirement to score the equaliser. Let's bring

:13:14.:13:16.

you up-to-date with what has been happening in the taekwondo because

:13:17.:13:20.

the semifinal happened a little while ago and it featured Great

:13:21.:13:23.

Britain's Lutalo Mohammad against European champion Beigi Harchegani

:13:24.:13:33.

of Azerbaijan, who is six foot six. We will join it at the start of the

:13:34.:13:36.

second round, there is no score yet. The first point on the board for

:13:37.:13:53.

Cullen McCullers -- 43. How often have we seen that, straightforward

:13:54.:14:00.

and right on target. Doing very well to stay in the ring, Lutalo

:14:01.:14:05.

Mohammad, but staying in the Carioca arena. Can he stay on song? One

:14:06.:14:20.

point to the good. Two kyong gos hanging there. Reducing the target,

:14:21.:14:30.

Herchegen with a lot to look at. The tempo suiting the British fighter

:14:31.:14:35.

here. The man from Walthamstow is doing really well to keep this

:14:36.:14:39.

tempo. Coming forward a bit more now. The referee having a close look

:14:40.:14:44.

and it will be a kyong go for holding the leg, Muhammad just

:14:45.:14:50.

questioning in that moment. Gets his focus back.

:14:51.:14:58.

That's it, isn't it, he's just waiting, waiting that little bit too

:14:59.:15:04.

long. The referee said he wants more action. Scoring with a wonderful

:15:05.:15:11.

headshot. His patience pays off. Position, firing into the face.

:15:12.:15:18.

Milad Beigi Harchegani firing himself. 3-point lead, perfect

:15:19.:15:25.

timing. Perfect, just hanging off of their waiting for the Azeri to come

:15:26.:15:31.

in. Almost scoring with another drop kick in response to the back kick.

:15:32.:15:36.

It is Harchegani that flicks one around the back. Are we going to see

:15:37.:15:43.

a kyon go? Looked to be some holding there. That headshot has been

:15:44.:15:50.

invalidated, if you hold and kick to the face, it doesn't count, no video

:15:51.:15:56.

replay needed, kyong-go given, it has given Lutalo Muhammad a very

:15:57.:16:01.

handy four point lead. It was a bit fortunate I have to say, but rules

:16:02.:16:05.

are rules, that's it. You are not allowed to hold. It could have been

:16:06.:16:11.

all evens but it's not, it's a healthy lead going into this final

:16:12.:16:12.

round. Olympic tae kwon do, the art of

:16:13.:16:22.

kicking and punching. There was the big head kick. Didn't he know it,

:16:23.:16:29.

Lutalo Muhammad. Very concentrated, Harchegani. Up against it. Looks

:16:30.:16:39.

like Steve Jennings the British coach like that one. I think he did.

:16:40.:16:45.

Now from a tactical point of view, Harchegani is going to have to come

:16:46.:16:52.

out all guns blazing. Muhammad has to really concentrate. This, the

:16:53.:16:57.

semifinal in the men's under 80 kilograms grouping. Lutalo Muhammad

:16:58.:17:02.

of Great Britain against Milad Beigi Harchegani of Azerbaijan. The Azeri

:17:03.:17:08.

that all of the two. A big gap in favour of the Brit, four points in

:17:09.:17:13.

front. That flexibility. He tries again. A flick to the head. Tense

:17:14.:17:19.

times year, Olympic final at stake. Do you attack, do you defend? He's

:17:20.:17:26.

defending. He takes a kyong-go. He takes a kyong-go because he closed

:17:27.:17:30.

that down, he didn't want to be there for the reverse kick. 5-2 now.

:17:31.:17:36.

Little reverse kick from Harchegani, a space opened. He capitalised.

:17:37.:17:41.

Tries with a little hook kick to the body there.

:17:42.:17:51.

We can just about hear Steve Jennings the British team coach

:17:52.:17:58.

advising him to go higher with that push kick to close the gap.

:17:59.:18:03.

Harchegani... Response from Muhammad, this one going back and

:18:04.:18:08.

forward. It's a kyong-go for stepping out. 5-3. Lutalo Muhammad

:18:09.:18:13.

having a conversation with Steve Jennings, he felt there was a head

:18:14.:18:18.

kick. Yeah, really going for the head, isn't he? Harchegani going for

:18:19.:18:24.

the big points. As we mentioned, the importance of staying concentrated,

:18:25.:18:29.

not just defending, Harchegani was two down but there is a kyong-go

:18:30.:18:34.

against Muhammad. Into the final minute here. He keeps trying to

:18:35.:18:39.

close the gap, Muhammad, he has to be careful, because we've seen it so

:18:40.:18:45.

often in this last minute. Harchegani's going to come forward

:18:46.:18:49.

and he's looking for the big points. Big points but not much time left.

:18:50.:18:55.

In which to do it. Lutalo Muhammad using the push kick, trying to

:18:56.:18:58.

maintain this, those with a headshot of his own. This tousled affair will

:18:59.:19:03.

suit the British fighter at the moment, breathing hard, huge

:19:04.:19:08.

pressure. Uncharted territory. Olympic bronze. In London. Can he go

:19:09.:19:18.

one further here? Yes, well again, closing it up. 5- for now, he's

:19:19.:19:22.

closed the gap, one more point would even it all up. The defensive

:19:23.:19:31.

tactics of Lutalo Muhammad, will they pay off? Beigi Harchegani of

:19:32.:19:35.

Azerbaijan is one points down. The Olympic Games final awaits. Tries

:19:36.:19:39.

with the head cake. Lutalo Muhammad manages to seal the deal, perfect

:19:40.:19:43.

shot from him, response from Harchegani, it's all kicking off

:19:44.:19:48.

here. Ten seconds to go in the third round, 11-7. Lutalo Muhammad of

:19:49.:19:52.

Great Britain on the cusp of an Olympic Games final. Shifts around.

:19:53.:19:57.

The clock is ticking down. Two in seconds left. The kyong-go, he'll

:19:58.:20:03.

take it all day. Beigi Harchegani on the move. Lutalo Muhammad in the

:20:04.:20:05.

final! Tremendous scenes here. Picture

:20:06.:20:14.

perfect performance. Lutalo Muhammad of Great Britain tactically perfect,

:20:15.:20:24.

timing spot on. Patience... It's most certainly a virtue. The man

:20:25.:20:31.

from Walthamstow shouting "Olympic final". That is where he's going.

:20:32.:20:35.

That gold-medal match will take place at 2:15am your time, the other

:20:36.:20:41.

major headline today is Nick Skelton, becoming Britain's

:20:42.:20:44.

first-ever individual show-jumping champion, he took the title going

:20:45.:20:50.

first in the jump off on big star. He our gold medallist, could we have

:20:51.:20:54.

another at the hockey? It's 2-2, let's go back to the Deodoro. Rishi

:20:55.:20:59.

Persad? They've been too expensive, they

:21:00.:21:07.

need to be composed, get the ball out wide, down the flanks, then to

:21:08.:21:11.

the front line under control. The biggest 30 minutes of their lives

:21:12.:21:13.

ahead of them, let's rejoin Matt and Mel. COMMENTATOR: Second half just

:21:14.:21:20.

underway, Great Britain now attacking, attacking the gold to the

:21:21.:21:26.

left. 2-2 in the gold-medal game. Incredible tension throughout that

:21:27.:21:32.

second court, particularly, Mel Clewlow, when the Dutch were all

:21:33.:21:35.

over the British team. Absolutely, it was a dominant second quarter by

:21:36.:21:40.

the Dutch, but it still remains 2-2 at half-time and from the British

:21:41.:21:43.

perspective you have to take the positives from it and realise

:21:44.:21:51.

anything that goes to Joyce Sombroek's goal could have an

:21:52.:21:54.

outcome. I'd like to see them putting the back line under pressure

:21:55.:21:57.

and winning the ball high up the field so they haven't got so far to

:21:58.:22:01.

run to try and get the ball into the Dutch circle.

:22:02.:22:12.

Cautious start from the Dutch on this left side. Kate

:22:13.:22:17.

Richardson-Walsh gets an early touch, then tidy things up. Slides

:22:18.:22:26.

it inside. Naomi van As will restart. A couple of Dutch players

:22:27.:22:36.

inside the circle. Van As tries to go past Nicola White.

:22:37.:22:44.

Attacking down the left, this side, bouncing behind, harmlessly enough.

:22:45.:22:55.

Hard to know which coach would be the happiest. I think there is more

:22:56.:22:59.

to come from this British team, definitely. From the Dutch is

:23:00.:23:05.

effective, they will be disappointed they haven't taken more chances and

:23:06.:23:10.

put more gold on the scoreboard. Four penalty chances in the first

:23:11.:23:13.

half, Great Britain yet you have one. Alex Dunton, her past to Hannah

:23:14.:23:19.

Macleod was a good one. McLeod bullied off the ball. On the deck.

:23:20.:23:27.

Right into the centre. White in good shape. That may come. Sam Quek on

:23:28.:23:38.

the left. Laura Unsworth forward. Normally at the other end of the

:23:39.:23:42.

field. In a forward attacking position. She's found Alex Danson.

:23:43.:23:49.

Danson with the free hit. The pass comes up short. Aimed for Sam Quek.

:23:50.:23:53.

The Dutch will try and charge down the right side with de Waard, who

:23:54.:24:02.

leads it for Naomi van As. Van As omnipresent, on the ball whenever

:24:03.:24:10.

there is a Dutch player present, it is Naomi van As, spends very little

:24:11.:24:14.

time on the bench. I'm led to believe it's her last international

:24:15.:24:17.

game for the Dutch, she will want to go out with a third Olympic gold

:24:18.:24:21.

medal. Sophie Bray tried to intercept. But they reconstruct down

:24:22.:24:26.

the left. They are into the Great Britain circle. Hoping to get a red

:24:27.:24:32.

foot on the ball. Nothing yet. It's behind.

:24:33.:24:50.

Van Geffen down the line. Great Britain appealed the ball had been

:24:51.:24:57.

pushed out. The umpire agreed, I think. One thing this British team

:24:58.:25:03.

will know is you don't beat the Dutch in the first quarter of any

:25:04.:25:06.

match, one thing the Dutch will know is this is probably the fittest

:25:07.:25:09.

women's hockey team there is alongside the USA. This team can go

:25:10.:25:15.

for 60 minutes, if there was extra time, which we know there isn't,

:25:16.:25:18.

they could do that as well, you have to grind it out against the Dutch.

:25:19.:25:21.

As I've said many times, take your opportunities when you can. England,

:25:22.:25:27.

we know, in the Europeans, where 2-0 with ten minutes to go and managed

:25:28.:25:32.

to come back to 2-2. This Great Britain side almost exactly the same

:25:33.:25:35.

as the England side that won the European Championships last year. No

:25:36.:25:41.

extra time. We go to the end of the 60 minutes. There will be a penalty

:25:42.:25:49.

shoot out. The Dutch won there against Germany in their semi.

:25:50.:25:53.

Germany beat New Zealand for the bronze medal early today. The

:25:54.:25:57.

Netherlands moving forward, Naomi van As holds it up. Shadow all the

:25:58.:26:04.

way to the corner by Sam Quek. Gets a stick in the way. Alex Danson back

:26:05.:26:10.

in her own 23, can she wiggle out of a tight spot? She's done

:26:11.:26:16.

beautifully. Danson loses out to van As, who is seeking revenge.

:26:17.:26:23.

Van Geffen. Inside to Bos. To the left they find Verschoor on the

:26:24.:26:37.

baseline. Back to van Maasakker, send it in, and a penalty corner has

:26:38.:26:42.

been given. Great Britain get a foot on the ball. The Dutch have their if

:26:43.:26:50.

penalty corner of the game. Crash ball in from van Maasakker, Susannah

:26:51.:26:53.

Townsend on the right line at Miss tracks the ball onto her own foot.

:26:54.:26:57.

She walked back to the halfway line from you could see how disappointed

:26:58.:27:01.

she was with that, personally. Fifth penalty corner of the game for the

:27:02.:27:09.

Dutch. Van Maasakker is forward. Kitty van Male is in position as

:27:10.:27:18.

well. The number 24, de Goede, with the black headband. The drag flick,

:27:19.:27:25.

saved by Maddie Hinch. Can they clear this? Cuts out the angle

:27:26.:27:32.

effectively. Still not out of the circle. Now it's clear and the

:27:33.:27:34.

protective gear comes off. Down the centre. Willemijn Bos. The

:27:35.:27:52.

circle. Sticks there. Another one given. Penalty corner number six,

:27:53.:28:00.

they keep on coming. It's just wave after wave of pressure. It's Welten

:28:01.:28:12.

here, as the ball breaks it comes off stick.

:28:13.:28:22.

Van Maasakker number 13, de Goede number 24. Target players here. As

:28:23.:28:37.

the injection comes in. This time... It's beautifully saved by Maddie

:28:38.:28:42.

Hinch. Richardson-Walsh involved as well, still rattling around in the

:28:43.:28:45.

circle. And another penalty corner has been given. I've got a feeling

:28:46.:28:51.

it's a combination of Helen Richardson-Walsh and Maddie Hinch.

:28:52.:28:57.

The shot from de Goede hits Kate Richardson-Walsh on the foot for the

:28:58.:29:03.

seven penalty corner. Great Britain have spent so much time wearing this

:29:04.:29:08.

protective headgear during this match, face masks on. Once again

:29:09.:29:13.

they will attempt to run it down. One of the pieces of women has gone

:29:14.:29:17.

behind the hoarding. It's exactly the correct decision to stop play,

:29:18.:29:22.

because it is player safety that is paramount. The 40 second rule

:29:23.:29:28.

applies, you have 40 seconds to get ready with your protective gear once

:29:29.:29:36.

the penalty corner has been awarded. Van Maasakker and de Goede change

:29:37.:29:40.

positions on the top of the circle. Penalty number seven for the

:29:41.:29:43.

Netherlands and this time they strike. Kitty van Male gets the

:29:44.:29:48.

goal. Her second. And the Dutch lead by 3-2 with eight and a half minutes

:29:49.:29:57.

left in the third period. You had a feeling the Dutch were going to have

:29:58.:30:00.

to do some kind of manoeuvre because it wasn't working off the top. Van

:30:01.:30:04.

Maasakker shapes to deliver a flick straight from the top. She rolls the

:30:05.:30:09.

ball, it's the pace at which he delivers it to Kitty van Male. Who

:30:10.:30:14.

doesn't really have to move. She swings her stick at the ball for a

:30:15.:30:16.

third Dutch goal. The rest of the team and those on

:30:17.:30:26.

the bench off the field of play celebrating. The Netherlands three,

:30:27.:30:31.

Great Britain two. The BBC news will follow the

:30:32.:30:38.

conclusion of this gold-medal match. Helen Richardson-Walsh starting to

:30:39.:31:00.

get busy in the centre. Need a little bit of magic, something

:31:01.:31:04.

creative from Helen Richardson-Walsh to reignite the British gold-medal

:31:05.:31:10.

challenge. They are really struggling to at the moment to keep

:31:11.:31:13.

possession. Helen Richardson-Walsh was the furthest player forward and

:31:14.:31:20.

had five Dutch players around her. Free hit outside the circle.

:31:21.:31:32.

It is off a foot. The Dutch busy here. Showing great patience as they

:31:33.:31:44.

try to get in there and that is a great cross. Thankfully from a

:31:45.:31:49.

British point of view, van As's cross was just too shallow. The

:31:50.:31:56.

Dutch just playing some simple, fantastic hockey, which is short,

:31:57.:31:59.

sharp movements with the players and it is the delivery of the ball from

:32:00.:32:05.

each other, it goes into space. It is not very often it goes stick to

:32:06.:32:12.

stick. The Dutch supporters know in good voice as wave after wave of

:32:13.:32:15.

Dutch attack heads to the Great Britain circle.

:32:16.:32:27.

Verschoor has done well, just drags it back. Hannah MacLeod looking for

:32:28.:32:38.

Sophie Bray. Bray on the break links up with Lily Owsley and Britain are

:32:39.:32:41.

rubbed to halfway under the grand scheme of things in the last 20

:32:42.:32:45.

minutes of this match, that is a good start. They have been doing

:32:46.:32:50.

nothing but defending. We haven't really seen the ball in the Dutch

:32:51.:32:55.

half in this quarter so far. It is typical of the Dutch to bring their

:32:56.:32:58.

best game to an Olympic final, which is, I guess, what you would expect.

:32:59.:33:05.

McAllen, surrounded by three, does well to find Crista Cullen. As soon

:33:06.:33:10.

as there is a British player, Giselle Ansley here, there is a grey

:33:11.:33:17.

shirt lurking. Giselle Ansley will try and find some forward momentum

:33:18.:33:22.

here, but it has to go backwards, via Laura Unsworth, before Georgie

:33:23.:33:26.

Twigg sets things rolling. Little flick from Shona McCallin. Sophie

:33:27.:33:32.

Bray was hoping to pick it up but the Dutch got their first again. --

:33:33.:33:41.

got there. Van As showing wonderful skills. Her passing has been

:33:42.:33:46.

pinpoint precise at times. Great Britain need to just keep moving,

:33:47.:33:50.

and they need to know what they are doing with the next pass. Verschoor

:33:51.:33:59.

has gone around two. Laura Unsworth pushes it behind. Maddie Hinch

:34:00.:34:05.

getting involved. The ball is still lose. Now it is behind and out of

:34:06.:34:07.

play. This is what you do all your fitness

:34:08.:34:27.

training for, for moments like this. It is tough. There is a lot of

:34:28.:34:31.

legwork being put in by the British team. I still think they have got

:34:32.:34:35.

goals in them if they can get the ball up into the Dutch half and it

:34:36.:34:39.

is a big ask, there is no doubt about that, the way the Dutch are

:34:40.:34:44.

playing. It was a superb tackle on van As by Nicola White. Here they

:34:45.:34:53.

come again from the back. Great Britain trying to press forward

:34:54.:34:56.

towards the halfway line. Sophie Bray watching. Hannah MacLeod, had

:34:57.:35:05.

stretched speak. White on the chase one more time -- outstretched stick.

:35:06.:35:11.

Penalty corner has been awarded. I think that has been given because

:35:12.:35:14.

Nicola White played the player, so van As knocks the ball into space

:35:15.:35:18.

and you can see that Nicola White just blocks Naomi van As, she is not

:35:19.:35:26.

playing at the ball. Van As asking the question, "What was that for?"

:35:27.:35:32.

Or danger, with four minutes left in the third period and the score 3-2.

:35:33.:35:37.

Maddie Hinch is going to have to be alert and be agile, hopefully get in

:35:38.:35:52.

on the act one more time. Pato -- Paumen lined up. It is behind.

:35:53.:36:01.

Paumen with the drag flicker. Definitely looking for a touch by

:36:02.:36:02.

the Dutch forward sliding in. Well, the players in red delighted

:36:03.:36:15.

to hear the whistle and see the signal that they were back in

:36:16.:36:17.

possession. The penalty corpsman again. The delivery was not of this

:36:18.:36:27.

page would expect. Crista Cullen ran out and managed to get the edge. The

:36:28.:36:34.

Dutch have stolen it at the Susannah Townsend's trip into the Dutch half.

:36:35.:36:38.

They are back on their way toward Maddie Hinch's goal. Giselle Ansley

:36:39.:36:47.

needed to accelerate quickly. Hinch under pressure. Townsend back to

:36:48.:36:55.

tidy up. Relief all round from the British supporters.

:36:56.:37:03.

Crista Cullen to Georgie Twigg. Giselle Ansley. Helen

:37:04.:37:22.

Richardson-Walsh. Can't get through. I think half their problem is the

:37:23.:37:26.

way the Dutch are defending, they are defending the middle of the

:37:27.:37:30.

field and as a result of that, they are forcing Great Britain into the

:37:31.:37:33.

outside channels and the sideline almost acts as another defender.

:37:34.:37:38.

Helen Richardson-Walsh picks up the ball and has the sideline as one

:37:39.:37:42.

defender and to Dutch players around her and it is so difficult to get

:37:43.:37:45.

the ball out when you are playing against the best team in the world.

:37:46.:37:51.

Laura Unsworth back in her defensive role. Can't keep it in. Ellen Hoog

:37:52.:38:00.

again. Shadowed by Nicola White. Swing and a miss from Ellen Hoog.

:38:01.:38:06.

Can Owsley burst into space question mark she was looking for it but she

:38:07.:38:08.

has given the ball away. They are menacing forward again. Van

:38:09.:38:20.

As on the left this time. Pushed behind by Crista Cullen. Van As

:38:21.:38:28.

wants to be at the heart of everything the Dutch are doing at

:38:29.:38:33.

the moment. Into the circle. Maddie Hinch out quickly. Another

:38:34.:38:40.

opportunity denied. The ball from one end of the field to the other.

:38:41.:38:46.

British ball, though, long corner. Taken quickly. Alex Danson is in the

:38:47.:38:52.

circle. It is more like a night of the judo as they go head over heels

:38:53.:38:56.

on top of each other and Helen Richardson-Walsh was backing up at

:38:57.:39:04.

speed. Players on the floor. A rare opportunity in this quarter came

:39:05.:39:10.

Great Britain's way, a rare opportunity to press forward. And we

:39:11.:39:16.

are into the final 30 seconds of the quarter.

:39:17.:39:23.

The Dutch happy to just keep possession. Still time for another

:39:24.:39:34.

attack on either goal. Last ten seconds. No one in a hurry. Looks as

:39:35.:39:44.

if the scoreline will remain at 3-2, as we await the signal for the end

:39:45.:39:49.

of the third quarter. There it is. Great Britain are behind in the

:39:50.:39:53.

gold-medal game, 15 minutes of hockey left in this file. 3-2 to the

:39:54.:40:00.

Netherlands. Rishi Persad. Quite simply, the Dutch have been

:40:01.:40:03.

brilliant, we can't take that away from them, Simon and it was almost

:40:04.:40:08.

inevitable that they were going to get chances again and when they get

:40:09.:40:12.

them, they are taking them. They are taking them but Maddie Hinch is

:40:13.:40:16.

putting up a valiant rearguard action, certainly putting are

:40:17.:40:19.

claiming for Best goalkeeper of the tournament but eventually, the

:40:20.:40:23.

Netherlands did come good. They were getting nothing out of going direct.

:40:24.:40:28.

In the end, it was a relatively straightforward Tappin. Maddie Hinch

:40:29.:40:31.

unable to get her hips than quick enough. It must be frustrating for

:40:32.:40:37.

Maddie Hinch, because she is having a great game. The pressure is

:40:38.:40:41.

immense, is there any way out, and outfits to have the pressure

:40:42.:40:46.

relieved? There isn't an obvious one right now, but the only thing in

:40:47.:40:51.

their favour is the English team in the European Championships beat this

:40:52.:40:54.

Netherlands team having been 2-0 down and had to come back with goals

:40:55.:40:58.

in the last eight minutes. They know they can do it. There is not an

:40:59.:41:01.

obvious way but they will be confident they can get something.

:41:02.:41:06.

How are the Dutch team maintaining the pace question mark we spoke

:41:07.:41:08.

about fitness levels and the British team being in good condition but the

:41:09.:41:12.

Dutch have been running so hard for so long. Can they keep it up? The

:41:13.:41:17.

adrenaline will help them but GB have to be careful of putting too

:41:18.:41:21.

many players on the ball carrier. They don't have Susannah Townsend on

:41:22.:41:25.

the ball, which is what they want to see, rampaging through midfield.

:41:26.:41:29.

Sometimes, it is her making her tackle in the 23. If you could say

:41:30.:41:36.

something to them, what would it be? Believe and defend high with someone

:41:37.:41:39.

up front. I think they have got to go high risk. High risk and believe.

:41:40.:41:45.

The last 15 minutes coming up of the hockey tournament here at Diadoro.

:41:46.:41:48.

Great Britain need something special. Back to Mel and Matt. Let's

:41:49.:41:55.

see if they play a high-risk strategy in this final quarter. 15

:41:56.:41:59.

minutes of hockey left. 3-2 in the gold-medal match. Dominant third

:42:00.:42:05.

quarter from the Dutch but the one thing is it is still only 3-2 on the

:42:06.:42:10.

scoreboard. Simon Grayson has just said this group of players honestly

:42:11.:42:14.

do believe and they never ever give up and they always will leave

:42:15.:42:17.

everything they have got on the pitch and you have to do, it is an

:42:18.:42:19.

Olympic final. Van den Heuvel down the left.

:42:20.:42:30.

Susannah Townsend back defending. Georgie Twigg needed to get a touch

:42:31.:42:36.

on that and she did, the faintest Nick just prevented another

:42:37.:42:41.

attacking move. I just think this British team now need to play

:42:42.:42:44.

without fear. You are 3-2 down in Olympic final, go for it. Cullen has

:42:45.:42:50.

lost possession. The Dutch are marauding forward. They have lost

:42:51.:42:53.

possession. Blowed up for a stick check. Welten.

:42:54.:43:07.

It is so hard to do that, as players, what do you do, you move

:43:08.:43:10.

the ball with a stick and then the stick tackle comes in but the block

:43:11.:43:14.

is given when the player on the ball hasn't got stick and ball in

:43:15.:43:19.

contact. Georgie Twigg trying to get herself out of that trap, she was

:43:20.:43:22.

surrounded on all sides by Dutch players. Aerial ball.

:43:23.:43:30.

Nothing achieved from that from Vanhoof all. -- Vanhoof

:43:31.:43:48.

Crista Cullen will hopefully something more accurate at this

:43:49.:43:51.

time. Taken out of the night sky. Georgie Twigg releases Alex Danson.

:43:52.:44:11.

Dashing forward. Getting up to the edge of the circle. Webb will

:44:12.:44:20.

restart. Some quick to her left, switches to the right to find Kate

:44:21.:44:25.

Richardson-Walsh. Her passes good. Helen Richardson-Walsh into the

:44:26.:44:30.

circle, across the goal and it will be a long corner. Fantastic ball by

:44:31.:44:34.

Kate Richardson-Walsh to Crista Cullen. I thought Cullen was going

:44:35.:44:40.

to take one touch and crashed the ball into the circle.

:44:41.:44:52.

Opportunity has gone away now following that Mr pass from Crista

:44:53.:45:08.

Cullen. -- missed pass. It's too easy for the Dutch to get out of

:45:09.:45:12.

that situation. Maartje Paumen was able to roll the ball. Britain need

:45:13.:45:21.

to work harder higher up the field to put numbers around the ball area.

:45:22.:45:30.

Kate Richardson-Walsh. Of the Dutch player, flicked forward. Very

:45:31.:45:40.

physical. Danson on the chase. Danson has managed to get hold of

:45:41.:45:45.

it. Back to her feet, a brilliant attacking play from Alex Danson.

:45:46.:45:51.

Three Great Britain players. Four now in the circle. Bray calling for

:45:52.:46:05.

it. Shona McCallin with the ball, had options to play the ball out

:46:06.:46:10.

around the back, decided to go one-on-one against Keetels, who

:46:11.:46:15.

jabbed the ball onto Shona McCallin's stick and across the

:46:16.:46:19.

baseline. At least we're seeing Great Britain try to win the ball

:46:20.:46:22.

high in Iraq, putting the Dutch players under more pressure. -- win

:46:23.:46:30.

the ball while you're up. Watched all the way by Sam Quek. She has

:46:31.:46:48.

support. Ansley involved again. Great Britain have ten minutes left

:46:49.:46:52.

in which to score a goal. And gets level with the Dutch in the

:46:53.:46:57.

gold-medal match. If its level at full time will have the penalty

:46:58.:47:01.

shoot out the way things stand the Dutch are taking the gold and silver

:47:02.:47:05.

will go to Great Britain. But there is a lot of hockey to be played.

:47:06.:47:12.

Lots of space here on the left for van Geffen. Verschoor ahead of her.

:47:13.:47:30.

Van Geffen losing a few seconds while she chooses her options here.

:47:31.:47:34.

Find Verschoor. Tackled by Nicola White on one side and Helen

:47:35.:47:41.

Richardson-Walsh on the other. The card has been shown to Leurink, who

:47:42.:47:50.

will have two minutes absence from the field. Nicola White restarts,

:47:51.:47:54.

finds Alex Danson, Great Britain have a player over. They had to take

:47:55.:48:03.

advantage of this situation. Townsend down the right, lays it

:48:04.:48:09.

back. Penalty corner awarded. Great Britain's first of the match. Now

:48:10.:48:13.

they have an opportunity. To get level in the gold-medal game.

:48:14.:48:19.

Fantastic, simple hockey. Ball rolled in by Susannah Townsend to

:48:20.:48:24.

Lily Owsley. Lily Owsley immediately goes to video referral, no need,

:48:25.:48:29.

Michelle Javed spots it and gives Great Britain their first penalty

:48:30.:48:35.

corner of the game. -- Joubert spot it. Kate Richardson-Walsh is going

:48:36.:48:40.

to inject the ball and Laura Unsworth is on, as you will see from

:48:41.:48:43.

the pictures, Laura Unsworth is stood on the right. Ansley stood on

:48:44.:48:49.

the left. Kate Richardson-Walsh to inject. Fired in, it's bouncing

:48:50.:48:55.

around. Desperate stuff. Another penalty corner coming.

:48:56.:49:01.

Not too far away. All comes out to Giselle Ansley... Alex Danson

:49:02.:49:10.

sliding income almost getting too good to touch. Keetels on the

:49:11.:49:15.

goal-line made the save. It was promising. Another opportunity now.

:49:16.:49:21.

Same personnel involved, Unsworth and Ansley. Ansley again. Unsworth!

:49:22.:49:32.

Pushed forward by Danson. Scored! Great Britain are level. I think it

:49:33.:49:37.

could be Nicola White, not 100% certain. Doesn't matter, doesn't

:49:38.:49:42.

matter at the moment. We'll find out. The Netherlands 3-3 Great

:49:43.:49:51.

Britain. Eight and a half minutes left in the gold-medal match. Who

:49:52.:49:57.

got the goal? Slipped left, Helen Richardson-Walsh in there, Danson

:49:58.:50:00.

has a go and it is Nicola White on the far post. Against all the odds,

:50:01.:50:03.

against all of the pressure, it doesn't matter. Right place, right

:50:04.:50:09.

time, Nicola White scores her third goal of the tournament and put it

:50:10.:50:18.

3-3. Eight and a half minutes left in the gold-medal game. The

:50:19.:50:23.

Netherlands 3-3 Great Britain. Naomi van As regrouping, trying to put

:50:24.:50:27.

pressure on the British defence once again. Nicola White the goal-scorer.

:50:28.:50:47.

Not bad is it, 100% record? White once again. That hurt. Lily Owsley

:50:48.:50:57.

screamed as she got hit on the shoulder, the shoulder is strapped

:50:58.:51:05.

up. Winces of pain from Lily Owsley. Aerial ball. A flick on it from

:51:06.:51:12.

Giselle Ansley. Aiming for Kelly Jonker.

:51:13.:51:27.

Free hit for the Netherlands once again. Who else but Naomi van As on

:51:28.:51:34.

the right-hand side? Into the circle and behind.

:51:35.:51:47.

Van Maasakker fires a ten, nobody there to receive. -- fires it in.

:51:48.:51:56.

Just goes to show doesn't matter how much possession you have in a game,

:51:57.:52:01.

the one thing GB have been is cynical in their execution, they

:52:02.:52:05.

haven't had many chances, but boy have they taken them when they've

:52:06.:52:09.

had to. Lily Owsley loses possession, desperately trying to

:52:10.:52:13.

get it back. Six and a half minutes left in the match. The Dutch are

:52:14.:52:19.

dangerous once more. Great Britain players on their knees trying to

:52:20.:52:27.

defend. It's behind. Britain have possession. Alison and I am watching

:52:28.:52:36.

on, looking slightly less content than she was ten minutes ago. Hollie

:52:37.:52:47.

Webb. Got possession. Unable to find Nicola White. Who is replaced by

:52:48.:52:56.

Georgie Twigg. There's an intensity about the way Britain are playing at

:52:57.:53:00.

the moment. That's a lovely turn. Danson. Danson held it up. : Crista

:53:01.:53:14.

Cullen has come forward, send it to Giselle Ansley. Back to Kate

:53:15.:53:27.

Richardson-Walsh. Good skills to get the Dutch out of trouble. They are

:53:28.:53:36.

at halfway. And continuing the on. Six redshirts around the loan Dutch

:53:37.:53:45.

attacker. Welten it is who has held it up now. Van Geffen. Towards the

:53:46.:53:56.

circle. Held up beautifully by Hollie Webb, whose stock has risen

:53:57.:54:01.

as this Olympic tournament has unfolded. Sophie Bray tries to find

:54:02.:54:08.

an escape route. The calmness of Hollie Webb. She realised she had

:54:09.:54:11.

time on the ball, didn't rush the clearance.

:54:12.:54:22.

Great Britain will have the free hit. Web sprints up to take care of

:54:23.:54:33.

it. That mistake from Holland game because Lily Owsley was prepared to

:54:34.:54:38.

put the mileage in and basically put van Maasakker under pressure as the

:54:39.:54:43.

centre back, bobbled the ball out to van Geffen, who you would expect to

:54:44.:54:47.

trap it anyway. Need more of the same from Britain. Townsend trying

:54:48.:54:54.

to break away down the left, to take the free hit. Another mistake from

:54:55.:55:01.

the Dutch midfield. As Owsley strikes. She's on her way, she has

:55:02.:55:06.

Bray. Helen Richardson-Walsh ahead of her. Appeals for the penalty

:55:07.:55:12.

corner. The umpire has stopped the clock and Owsley has gone over.

:55:13.:55:33.

A back stick. Not in the circle. It's inside the five, if anything,

:55:34.:55:54.

it's going to be a hit to Britain, rather than a penalty corner. It was

:55:55.:56:01.

close. Looked like a back stick possibly could have been an edge.

:56:02.:56:06.

The video umpire with more angles than we can get. The thing Lisa

:56:07.:56:11.

Roach has to decide, if it hits the back of the stick is it deliberate

:56:12.:56:19.

by Maartje Paumen, which would be a penalty corner.

:56:20.:56:29.

Tense moments while the video umpire weighs up her options now. Looks

:56:30.:56:44.

again and again. I personally don't think it's a penalty corner but

:56:45.:56:47.

that's just my opinion from what I've seen on a couple of replays.

:56:48.:56:53.

Lisa Roach asking for more options to study. 3-3 with three and a half

:56:54.:57:00.

minutes left on the clock. Huge decision from the video umpire.

:57:01.:57:08.

Right here. There is no back of the stick, GB lose their referral. The

:57:09.:57:13.

gamble didn't pay off for Lily Owsley, they lost the video

:57:14.:57:18.

referral. But nothing worse than that. The Dutch will have a free hit

:57:19.:57:23.

inside their 23 in the last three and a half minutes of the match. It

:57:24.:57:28.

will now unfold. We have an three. If it stays like this we will go to

:57:29.:57:36.

penalties. Susannah Townsend trying to wriggle her way out of there.

:57:37.:57:38.

Naomi van As. She's everywhere. Aerial ball from Ansley goes

:57:39.:58:10.

straight out of play. It's a tense one, this, isn't it? Extraordinary!

:58:11.:58:16.

Fingernails being bitten all around the Deodoro Olympic hockey arena.

:58:17.:58:22.

Fans have been just watching, unable to make too much noise. It's been

:58:23.:58:28.

relatively quiet. It's fallen for Sophie Bray... No, the whistle has

:58:29.:58:35.

gone. It's the gold-medal match. 3-3. Two and a quarter minutes left

:58:36.:58:43.

in this final. If it's still all square after that we will go to a

:58:44.:58:46.

penalty shoot out, the Dutch coming forward, Maddie Hinch is down,

:58:47.:58:53.

Maddie Hinch is safe. Raised by Maddie Hinch. Welten comes flying

:58:54.:59:01.

through at speed. The Dutch brewing for the referral. -- going for the

:59:02.:59:13.

referral. Welten wins the ball, takes a quick free hit, round

:59:14.:59:22.

Richardson-Walsh. Looked as though Britain got a slight touch on it

:59:23.:59:30.

first. Just thereby Crista Cullen. Dutch looking for a penalty corner

:59:31.:59:37.

with two minutes left on the clock. Another massive call for Lisa Roach.

:59:38.:59:43.

Once again, we wait. The gamble fails to pay off for the

:59:44.:59:59.

Dutch. We will have a restart with Great Britain in possession.

:00:00.:00:10.

Welcome to viewers on BBC Two. 3-3 in the gold-medal match. Two minutes

:00:11.:00:19.

left. On the clock. Penalty shoot out, potentially, looming. And all

:00:20.:00:25.

the drama and further tension that will bring with it.

:00:26.:00:33.

In the back of the Dutch minds, the last two times they have faced

:00:34.:00:39.

Maddie Hinch on a penalty shoot out, there is a minute and a half left to

:00:40.:00:44.

play, they have lost, they lost in Belgium in the Europeans to England,

:00:45.:00:48.

in the semifinals. They lost the European cup. Last summer, to

:00:49.:00:54.

England. Van As roared every step of the way. Kate Richardson-Walsh back

:00:55.:01:00.

tidying up. Again, unstoppable when she's on this flag. Sent across.

:01:01.:01:07.

Inch sticks out a big right foot and sends it clear. Free hit this side.

:01:08.:01:16.

Inside the final 60 seconds of the game.

:01:17.:01:29.

And more chance for Great Britain to finish it in normal time. Pressing

:01:30.:01:37.

forward but cautiously, which is understandable -- one more chance.

:01:38.:01:43.

30 seconds left in the gold-medal game. Helen Richardson-Walsh finds

:01:44.:01:49.

Georgie Twigg who sets it running down the right. Sophie Bray loses

:01:50.:01:50.

possession. Last ten seconds. The gold-medal

:01:51.:02:07.

game is going to a penalty shoot out. 3-3 at the end of normal time.

:02:08.:02:14.

Penalties to follow. Well, it is penalties now. Great

:02:15.:02:28.

Britain, somehow, Simon, somehow, have clawed themselves back into it

:02:29.:02:31.

because for long periods, from the second period till the end of the

:02:32.:02:36.

game, the Dutch dominated. They dominated, they have so much

:02:37.:02:40.

possession, they turned Great Britain over in dangerous midfield

:02:41.:02:44.

areas but Great Britain have been successful over not just this

:02:45.:02:46.

tournament but the last couple of years in terms of the confidence in

:02:47.:02:51.

their deep defence, the ability of Maddie Hinch, which has been unreal

:02:52.:02:56.

and they ride it again and again and ever come forward and get a chance

:02:57.:02:59.

and score the goal. By heart is beating fast, I can only imagine

:03:00.:03:03.

what they are going through. Take us through the penalty shoot out

:03:04.:03:08.

format. It exists as an eight second timed opportunity. The attacker

:03:09.:03:12.

starts from the 23-metre line, the goalkeeper starts from the

:03:13.:03:16.

goal-line. The will advance on the whistle, as will the carrier. -- the

:03:17.:03:21.

goalkeeper. If there is a rebound, you can go again until the time runs

:03:22.:03:26.

out. If the goalkeeper fouls, it can be upgraded to a penalty stroke or

:03:27.:03:31.

if it is deemed to be not deliberate, it can be retaken.

:03:32.:03:34.

Essentially, it is an eight second one on one. The reason we are into

:03:35.:03:39.

penalties is because somehow Great Britain dragged themselves back into

:03:40.:03:44.

it with the equaliser. And what an equaliser, one corner, one chance,

:03:45.:03:48.

it wasn't pretty. In the end, knocked on by Nicola White, we

:03:49.:03:54.

think. They had to believe. Mel and Matt in commentary talked about

:03:55.:03:59.

believe. It comes through years of training, it is ingrained, it is

:04:00.:04:04.

born out of training in the dark on a wet December evening, just sheer

:04:05.:04:07.

repetition and it takes you through a game when the opponent is

:04:08.:04:11.

dominant, the opponent dictates and it's all over you but you hold fire

:04:12.:04:16.

and hold firm. It was Nicola White indeed who got the equaliser. Maddie

:04:17.:04:20.

Hinch has been the star throughout the tournament. What advantage does

:04:21.:04:24.

she give us going into this penalty shoot out, if any at all? Her

:04:25.:04:28.

preparation. Maddie Hinch allegedly has a little black book and

:04:29.:04:33.

apparently tactics in the game are ridden on the back of a water

:04:34.:04:37.

bottle. Every penalty stroke she has saved, she will have studied the

:04:38.:04:41.

opponent and then a massive amount of preparation. She knows what she

:04:42.:04:44.

did in the European cup final the England, the nodes in the little

:04:45.:04:48.

black book. Does it matter that the Dutch came through a penalty shoot

:04:49.:04:53.

out in the semifinals? Makes no difference. These players do it day

:04:54.:04:57.

in, day out. Maddie Hinch will know what to do as a goalkeeper, the

:04:58.:05:01.

field players will know what to do but for me, it is having a basic

:05:02.:05:05.

understanding and knowledge of what you want to achieve. The goalkeeper

:05:06.:05:09.

can't dictate an area or an option but don't get cautious, stick with

:05:10.:05:14.

what you know. So important to keep a clear mind. Maddie Hinch just

:05:15.:05:19.

looking at her book, so spot on. Is there anyway of telling the skills

:05:20.:05:24.

that these guys have. How much practice have they done, how much

:05:25.:05:30.

skill can you use in this penalty shoot out? They will have practised

:05:31.:05:39.

until it becomes instinctive. 1,000 hours, 300 repetitions for it to

:05:40.:05:45.

become instinctive. You are subconsciously looking at what the

:05:46.:05:48.

goalkeeper is doing, read the position, see the shift of weight,

:05:49.:05:52.

go to a different space, as a goalkeeper, look at the stick, is it

:05:53.:05:58.

turning over? It is about instinctive knowledge. This is real

:05:59.:06:02.

drama coming up. The penalty shoot out not far away. Matt, Mel, keeping

:06:03.:06:04.

our fingers crossed. Everything crossed up here in the

:06:05.:06:13.

commentary box. Helen Richardson-Walsh will be first away.

:06:14.:06:16.

Helen Richardson-Walsh to take on the goalkeeper Joyce Sombroek. The

:06:17.:06:23.

eight second time will appear on the giant scoreboard and then the umpire

:06:24.:06:30.

will blow the whistle for the start. First penalty of the shoot out in

:06:31.:06:32.

the gold-medal game. Helen Richardson-Walsh on her way.

:06:33.:06:53.

Paul Soukup. Saved and behind. -- holds it up. It wasn't the best from

:06:54.:06:58.

Helen Richardson-Walsh, she does the right thing coming in here and turns

:06:59.:07:03.

her back and at that moment, doesn't get the drag that she needs to put

:07:04.:07:06.

the ball out of reach of Joyce Sombroek. Bos took the first in the

:07:07.:07:16.

semifinal and has stepped up first again today. She tends to come in

:07:17.:07:18.

and slap the top. Hinge goes out to meet her and does

:07:19.:07:33.

enough. It is behind, it is a mess. -- Miss. Maddie Hinch sprinted off

:07:34.:07:39.

her line. Who would be a coach? Hinge is very clever, she changes

:07:40.:07:43.

where she starts her run up every time -- Maddie Hinch. Alex Danson up

:07:44.:07:51.

next. She will take Great Britain's second penalty.

:07:52.:07:58.

Charging towards Sombroek. Sweeps it round, still time left. Now she has

:07:59.:08:07.

run out of time. Three penalties, no luck from any player yet.

:08:08.:08:13.

One of the world's best players can't stand to watch. Danson

:08:14.:08:22.

choosing to turn her back. Ice hockey type saved by Sombroek, being

:08:23.:08:27.

able to do the splits. It is why the goalkeepers do the training and the

:08:28.:08:29.

stretching and everything they do. Ellen Hoog is up for the Dutch. She

:08:30.:08:35.

missed her first one in the semifinal but did score when it got

:08:36.:08:37.

to sudden death. Hinch kicks it clear. They have run

:08:38.:08:57.

out of time. Maddie Hinch, absolutely brilliant. Maddie Hinch

:08:58.:09:05.

on this one deciding, you will see, she comes out very slowly this time.

:09:06.:09:10.

Stutters as she comes out, really puts off Ellen Hoog. She tries to

:09:11.:09:16.

roll it under Hinch who does exceptionally well not to uncover

:09:17.:09:22.

the ball -- cover the ball and give away another penalty. Sophie Bray.

:09:23.:09:29.

She is brought down. Penalty stroke. So in this situation, anybody can

:09:30.:09:44.

take the penalty stroke, it doesn't have to be the person involved in

:09:45.:09:47.

the shoot out, which is why Sophie Bray is coming back.

:09:48.:09:54.

Sombroek has changed her stick for the penalty stroke as well. A lot of

:09:55.:09:59.

goalkeepers choose a much longer stick. It is Helen Richardson-Walsh

:10:00.:10:05.

striding forward to take the penalty stroke.

:10:06.:10:11.

Helen Richardson-Walsh. Penalty stroke. Scores! Great Britain are

:10:12.:10:30.

off the mark in the shoot out. Love that place. The entire Dutch crowd

:10:31.:10:36.

were booing her. -- love that place. She will play her club hockey there

:10:37.:10:41.

next year. That is calmness under pressure, rolling the ball into the

:10:42.:10:44.

corner. Some of the girls can't watch. Next up for the Dutch,

:10:45.:10:50.

Leurink. Maddie Hinch not imposition just yet. In no real rush to get

:10:51.:10:56.

there, just to make things more tense four Leurink. Leurink is 19

:10:57.:11:05.

years of age so Hinch probably playing some mind Games. She is a

:11:06.:11:07.

quality player with a lot to learn. The Dutch haven't scored one yet.

:11:08.:11:16.

Can Leurink get there first? Going all the way around and Hinch pushes

:11:17.:11:19.

it away. I think that sums up everyone

:11:20.:11:32.

probably watching. It is brave for a 19-year-old to step up and take a

:11:33.:11:36.

penalty in the shoot out of an Olympic Games but Hinch again

:11:37.:11:39.

showing why she is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world

:11:40.:11:41.

in this situation. Laura Unsworth. Sombroek saves. Another chance.

:11:42.:12:01.

Hyundai over the top. -- too high and over the top. Laura Unsworth

:12:02.:12:10.

choosing to emulate Bos and take a shot from the top. Does the right

:12:11.:12:14.

thing trying to go over the top of the advancing keeper. Now we have

:12:15.:12:19.

got van Geffen for the Dutch. Hinch once again slapping her

:12:20.:12:31.

crossbar, slapping her posts. Van Geffen poised over the ball.

:12:32.:12:36.

Hinch watching it every step of the way. She has hit the post. She has

:12:37.:12:46.

missed. Hinch will clear. Bottom line right now is if Hollie Webb

:12:47.:12:54.

scores, if Hollie Webb scores... Week, Great Britain, win gold. This

:12:55.:13:02.

is the golden opportunity for Hollie Webb of Great Britain. Joyce

:13:03.:13:05.

Sombroek stands in her way. Hollie Webb on her way to win gold

:13:06.:13:25.

for Great Britain. Webb... Turns, scores! That is the golden goal!

:13:26.:13:30.

Great Britain have won the Olympic gold medal! The history makers, the

:13:31.:13:39.

hockey history makers! They will each leave Rio with a gold medal!

:13:40.:13:46.

Great Britain are the Olympic champions and they are on top of the

:13:47.:13:53.

world. Absolutely unbelievable. Look what it means to those players. Look

:13:54.:13:58.

what it means back home. Anybody who has been tuned in watching that on a

:13:59.:14:06.

Friday night, that is something else. I am speechless, I am not

:14:07.:14:07.

going to get emotional tonight because to be honest, I cannot

:14:08.:14:13.

believe what I have just seen. It is incredible, but Great Britain are

:14:14.:14:16.

walking off here with an Olympic gold medal. Eight from eight in the

:14:17.:14:21.

biggest tournament in the world. Yes, eight matches, eight wins.

:14:22.:14:25.

Danny Kerry is on the pitch at last. He spends most of his time in the

:14:26.:14:30.

stands. He is down there to celebrate with his players and the

:14:31.:14:34.

rest of his staff. Great Britain's 24th gold medal of these Games. The

:14:35.:14:41.

first time Britain's hockey team, the women's British hockey team,

:14:42.:14:46.

have struck gold. Maddie Hinch in the goal for Great Britain, once

:14:47.:14:53.

again, the hero of the occasion. And the Dutch, who won the last two

:14:54.:14:58.

Olympic golds will have to settle for the silver tonight. It sounds

:14:59.:15:04.

good. I'm sorry, it sounds good. It doesn't happen very often, they are

:15:05.:15:08.

the number one team in the world for a reason and I tell you what, they

:15:09.:15:12.

put on display, there is no doubt about that in my mind and anyone

:15:13.:15:16.

watching, the Dutch are a credit to sport as well. That is all I can

:15:17.:15:23.

say, honestly. It is absolutely incredible, it really is incredible.

:15:24.:15:31.

So what about Maddie Hinch? We said it before the game. It is the third

:15:32.:15:36.

time now she has been the hero for England and Great Britain and she is

:15:37.:15:40.

going to love playing in Holland next year, she will walk into the

:15:41.:15:45.

team with a gold medal around her neck. And a golden goodbye to Kate

:15:46.:15:50.

Richardson-Walsh after so many years of dedicated service to her sport

:15:51.:15:54.

and to her nation. This is how Hollie Webb won the gold for Great

:15:55.:16:01.

Britain. We are never going to get bored of seeing that, are we, ever?

:16:02.:16:08.

And the celebrations can begin. What a night at the Diadoro. Great

:16:09.:16:16.

Britain are the Olympic champions. What a moment for Hollie Webb, what

:16:17.:16:20.

a moment for the Great Britain hockey team, what a moment for the

:16:21.:16:27.

sport back home, Simon? I am genuinely struggling to get that

:16:28.:16:32.

into words, in a game where Great Britain were under the cosh, where

:16:33.:16:37.

they came back into it again and again, there were a lot of people

:16:38.:16:41.

that felt if they got to penalties, they would win, they have the best

:16:42.:16:45.

goalkeeper in the world, who is unreal. Fair play to Maddie Hinch,

:16:46.:16:50.

saved everything put at her. That will change the face of British

:16:51.:16:55.

hockey, the impact on team sport is unbelievable. The Dutch team have

:16:56.:16:58.

done remarkably well, they have a lot to be proud of and together, the

:16:59.:17:02.

two teams have produced almost the dream final. It was a spectacle that

:17:03.:17:09.

I have not commentated on all been involved with ever. That was the

:17:10.:17:15.

finest display. It was up and down at times but as a game for the

:17:16.:17:19.

spectators in the stadium and those watching on television background,

:17:20.:17:22.

it was unreal. Lovely sportsmanship between the two sides as well. What

:17:23.:17:27.

does tonight say about the sport of hockey for you? For me, it shows

:17:28.:17:33.

that anybody, if they believe enough, any team, if they believe

:17:34.:17:37.

enough, can get to this stage. Some of the athletes are first-time

:17:38.:17:41.

Olympians, some of them three or four time Olympians, but you have to

:17:42.:17:44.

keep going. If you have a dream, you can fulfil it. Yes, it is about hard

:17:45.:17:49.

knocks and training and physical elements, but what these teams have

:17:50.:17:53.

displayed has been exceptional and to see them with the sportsmanship

:17:54.:17:57.

they are showing now, there are some good friends out there who have

:17:58.:18:00.

battled till the last whistle. You can hear the celebrations in the

:18:01.:18:04.

Diadoro stadium, you can see the women dancing, the team are dancing,

:18:05.:18:09.

having a great time because, I imagine, the release after this

:18:10.:18:13.

two-week intense period, where they have banned social media, they have

:18:14.:18:17.

taken away from a taken themselves away, gone into lockdown to get

:18:18.:18:21.

ready for this moment. Now they can celebrate.

:18:22.:18:28.

They have gone into lockdown, the team and the support staff. What a

:18:29.:18:33.

result, they have put themselves beyond doubt as the class outfit in

:18:34.:18:38.

British team sport. What an exceptional result for them. In all

:18:39.:18:43.

truth tonight, they haven't been the best side, the Dutch looked much

:18:44.:18:47.

better, but what they have done tonight and throughout the

:18:48.:18:49.

tournament is shown belief, belief in each other, and such a bond that

:18:50.:18:55.

will not be broken. Absolutely, and it shows possession means nothing in

:18:56.:18:59.

sport. When it went to the penalty shoot out, it was in the Dutch

:19:00.:19:03.

minds. Hinchcliffe against the Dutch, three out of three,

:19:04.:19:07.

absolutely phenomenal. They talked after the champions Trophy, I

:19:08.:19:15.

commentated and I thought, how will you turn it around in 60 days? And

:19:16.:19:17.

they have, eight from eight, incredible. I hate to pick out

:19:18.:19:24.

individuals, every single one, and those who missed out on selection,

:19:25.:19:29.

they all played significant parts, but Danny Kerry and Kate in

:19:30.:19:38.

particular. I have been fortunate to have been coached by Kate and Danny.

:19:39.:19:44.

Danny is the best tactical person I've ever been coached by. He and

:19:45.:19:48.

his team go through hours of preparation to get the team in this

:19:49.:19:52.

position. Kate is one of the most humble hockey players I've come

:19:53.:19:56.

across. She has no idea of the impact she's had on this sport. Look

:19:57.:20:00.

at those scenes. You know it it's like to be part of that team. I

:20:01.:20:04.

don't know what it's like to feel like that. Honestly, I don't. But I

:20:05.:20:08.

have a lot of friends in there and I'm proud and privileged to say they

:20:09.:20:17.

are my friends. And I have a cup -- clubmates there as well. There will

:20:18.:20:23.

be a lot of celebrations at home. Looking at their faces, it seems

:20:24.:20:25.

like this is exactly what they expected. It might be what the

:20:26.:20:30.

expected and planned for, but they have genuinely no idea what they've

:20:31.:20:34.

done. They will savour this moment of absolute ever. The emotion and

:20:35.:20:42.

passion is outstanding. We will try to grab a quick interview. The crowd

:20:43.:20:47.

applauding, and also applauding the Dutch team behind us. To reiterate,

:20:48.:20:52.

they were outstanding and they contributed their part to a

:20:53.:20:56.

fantastic match. I'm certain this will have inspired an audience of

:20:57.:21:00.

players around the world who have not played hockey in the past. The

:21:01.:21:06.

skills on display from the Dutch offence were magnificent. From a

:21:07.:21:11.

British perspective, it might have been last-ditch, they had to hang on

:21:12.:21:15.

at times, but in essence that's what they did. They play to their

:21:16.:21:19.

strengths, they did it against Australia. They came back, Manny was

:21:20.:21:26.

brilliant. It might not have been pretty but it was effective.

:21:27.:21:30.

Celebrations continue, it's difficult to grab their attention.

:21:31.:21:34.

We would love to grab a word, but they all want to be part of what's

:21:35.:21:39.

going on. They are still wondering around, saluting every single member

:21:40.:21:46.

of the crowd. Part of the Great Britain support. We will have more

:21:47.:21:53.

reaction from him on BBC Two. And we can allow them to celebrate, because

:21:54.:22:05.

they deserve it. Tonight, we came here, they expected, we expected

:22:06.:22:09.

because they lifted our expectations, Simon. It's still

:22:10.:22:13.

difficult to believe it came off. It's hard to believe emotionally,

:22:14.:22:18.

but if we look at it in a cold light of day, this has been years in the

:22:19.:22:23.

making. So the girls expected, they believed, and they knew they could

:22:24.:22:28.

deliver this. Whether the fans knew and believed it, or whether it was a

:22:29.:22:31.

pipe dream, every single one of the players and support staff believe

:22:32.:22:35.

this moment could come. That's how they delivered in the face of this

:22:36.:22:39.

adversity, it was exceptional. Thank you so much. History made and a lot

:22:40.:22:44.

of celebrating going on. STUDIO: I genuinely think that's one of the

:22:45.:22:48.

greatest results ever for a women's team sport. We will have the medals

:22:49.:22:56.

ceremony and interviews on BBC Two. We will be leaving you shortly on

:22:57.:22:59.

BBC One. Coverage is already continuing on BBC Two. Composure,

:23:00.:23:05.

confidence and character has won a gold medal for the very first time

:23:06.:23:08.

in women's hockey for Great Britain. COMMENTARY MONTAGE: We are ready

:23:09.:23:15.

here for 60 minutes of blood, sweat and ultimately tears, one way or the

:23:16.:23:16.

other. Helen Richardson Walsh waiting in

:23:17.:23:26.

the centre of the circle, enough the legs and this time it's a score.

:23:27.:23:28.

Great Britain in front. The Dutch inside the circle, Hinch

:23:29.:23:40.

is out, narrowing the angle. And it's a goal for the Netherlands, 2-1

:23:41.:23:44.

in front. A chance for Colin, and she has scored. A second goal for

:23:45.:23:53.

the Dutch player. They've scored, Great Britain are level. Penalty

:23:54.:23:55.

shoot out. That's the golden goal! Is it hard to balance

:23:56.:24:03.

family and work? Well, family always come first...

:24:04.:24:04.

Nah - cos to me Kurupt FM is my work

:24:05.:24:06.

AND my family, so...
