Day 14 BBC Two: 20.00-20.30 Olympics

Hello and welcome back to coverage of the Rio Olympics. There is Tom

Daley, already a bronze medallist in these Games and about to start his

preliminary round of the ten metre individual platform, they perform

six dives in each phase and the 18 highest progress to the medals and

that is live on the Red Button, but we will be bringing you all the news

of it later. On BBC One, I was just talking to Jade Jones who

successfully defended her title last night in taekwondo. She was

Britain's first ever Olympic champion in the sport in London.

Could there be more to come? Lutalo Mohammad, who was in action in his

quarterfinal, he is up against a Steven Lopez of America, five times

and Olympic champion. Lopez is 37, could Lutalo Mohammad beat him to

win through to the semifinals? We will find out in this superfast

sport. They have magnets on their feet and when they hit the pad or

the head, points are registered. One centimetre is the height

difference. Both men are around six feet three. Steven Lopez in blue,

Lutalo Mohammad, the big man in red, tries to flick. Gerd Kanter turning

kick from Lopez. Already an aggressive start -- good counter. 12

years senior, the 37-year-old Lopez. A fifth Olympic Games, that is

remarkable, it really is. He didn't have a good London, so he will be

wanting to really put it right here. And a fifth Olympic Games in combat

sport. Amazing. I was saying yesterday, it is not just coming to

the Olympic Games, it is that for years you have to prepare for it,

because you have a whole cycle. And it was a long and arduous cycle for

Lopez. Usually so dominant but coming back from the injuries you

mentioned, it has taken him time to find his feet. Almost finds a foot

into the body protector. Muhammad himself doing well to come back from

a knee injury and re-establish his form. A little bit of judo there. It

did look that way, didn't it? The first warning to Muhammad,

controversially. "You Are the best in the world" is the advice to Lopez

in Spanish. They have obviously decided to coach in Spanish against

an English-speaking opponent. It is interesting, the coach said, "You

are here to win," and obviously if one said, if it is going to be his

last Olympic Games, is he going to try for 41? You never know. 41 would

be a reach. 41 seconds left as Muhammad goes then again. How

important could that prove? It looks pretty calm, pretty cool. Hasn't

really got out of first gear, Lutalo Mohammad, as he takes the centre of

the ring, taking his time. A very good athlete, great presence. And

when he lets his legs go, it causes lots of problems for all his

opponents. At the moment, it is the American who takes the warning for

pulling. It is tied. It all depends on range and we have talked about

that before and how quickly you get it right. Quick kick fired around

the corner, excellent cover from Muhammad. A front leg of his own and

it's scores perfectly, it is a tale of the two head kicks and it reads

better for Lutalo Mohammad. He was a point down, almost took the reverse

turning kick. That is going to be a 3-point gap, so from being three

down, he is now three points up, Lutalo Mohammad. Excellent recovery,

it shows you how quickly things change. It changes just like that,

and he found the range and that is what he needed to make contact with

the head. A little bit more in hope than

expectation. That to me initially looked like a push rather than a

straight shot, but they straight shot there, look at the cover, so

important to have your wits about you. I was going to ask about the

block. It happened so quickly, but there, you could see the hands

coming up just stop that making contact. And the converse, the hands

are just missing. Millimetres will decide that one. And on the

scoreboard, it is looking good for Lutalo Mohammad. Tries to get the

crowd up, this is his style. He is loving it, the whole occasion, the

whole of the Olympic movement, he loves it. Plenty of movement from

Muhammad. The scoreboard tells the story. Good counter by the Brit in

red. Well blocked by Lopez but another aggressive start, going for

the chop kick. Straight off the buzzer. Lopez not wasting any time.

The American fans trying to give their charge some confidence. He is

going to have to find something different. Muhammad looking very

composed here. I think it is change of pace, probably, that Lopez hasn't

got now and he probably lost a little bit of his speed, just being

beaten to the punch, I was going to say, but I mean it metaphorically,

of course. Muhammad doing a good job. Absolutely correct, as you say,

the tempo just slowing down a little bit, which might suit the American,

but Muhammad is very patient, that is his style. A minute left in the

second and it is as we were on the scoreboard. Good threat from

Muhammad, tries to go high. That is the second time. This time the

referee, from our perspective, gets it right. It was a bit of a hip

toss, so going against Lopez the kyong go. As we have talked about,

it is important not to go on the defensive straightaway. You can't.

Offence is much better to keep it going. If that is what has been

scoring for you. We saw them yesterday lose crucial matches in

that last round by backing off. That was almost to the head.

I think we are going to have a bit of a technical issue here. Strange

noise emanating from the scoreboard. 18 seconds left in the second.

3-point gap. Let's have a little look and see. This is not the first

time there have been technological delays here. In the middle of a

fight, that is not what you need. What could that be? Some technical

problem as we look at the timekeepers. They have it sorted

again. Not good enough at the Olympic Games, it has to be

rectified, has to be improved. Ten seconds left in the second. 3-point

gap maintained by Lutalo Mohammad, despite the delay. Brilliant block

again from Muhammad. His concentration has been absolutely

resolute here. Covers again. Almost takes a back kick butt covered

himself in great credit. Lutalo Mohammad taking his time and

maintaining that lead. I love the way that he readjusts his distance

all the time, it is all about balance and distance, isn't it? And

using his hands as well as great defence.

Well, it was a tale of attack in the first round, but the defence has

helped him to maintain that at the moment. The concentration as well

from the British fighter in red has been absolutely perfect and he is

going to have to stay on his game. Double Olympic champion, five times

world champion, Steven Lopez, a real threat even still. Stephen Jennings

with great coaching advice there, aware that the clincher will lead to

the shortcake. The men -- shortcake. Steven Lopez against Lutalo

Mohammad, this is the third round. The British fighter, as you can see,

handy little lead. Kyong go hanging against the American, who changes

stance. Lopez, so experienced, just trying to intimidate. He will have

to go some, because Lutalo Mohammad is very cool and as we have seen,

great concentration. You have said so many times, just trying to draw

them in by the change of stance all the time, just trying to get them in

the right situation, the right position, in order to get back kick

in their to score. -- get a kick in there. Trying to draw your opponent

in. You can see the distance between the two, a little tiny gap now,

Lutalo Mohammad using that front leg to intimidate. Lopez goes for the

spin, which would be a three point kick. He will have to get a bit of a

run on here. Great defence there from Muhammad. Just signs of slight

fatigue from the Brit, not much snap in that shot. Better with that one.

He has gone on the defence, he has let Lopez come forward and is then

trying to pick him off. This one for a spot in the Olympic

Games semifinal. Excellent little push kick, just jamming it under the

guard of the American. With 40 seconds left, it is a 4-point game.

Good short kick from Lutalo Mohammad, that is the flexibility

and athleticism. That puts him into a fantastic position. I will just

explain the chop kick, the kick goes high and comes down, makes contact

with the head, either the guard or the face and gets big points. So a

comfortable lead. Big points and a big opportunity but sneaking one in

under the guard, Steven Lopez. 9-2 at the moment. Double Olympic

champion, five times world champion. Can he do something here or will it

be Lutalo Mohammad of Great Britain fighter. He has been organised, his

confidence is up and he has the number of the American here. Olympic

bronze medallist in his home Games in London. Excellent movement,

slides round the side, avoids the back kick of Lopez. Can he maintain

his concentration? Lutalo Mohammad, perfect performance, finishes with a

head shot. Olympic Games semifinalist from

Great Britain, Lutalo Mohammad takes the salute of the crowd, richly

deserved and what a game plan and execution there. It was a game plan,

wasn't it? He knew exactly what he had to do and was waiting. Lopez,

you have got to say, it was a tall order. If you have a look at when he

won World Championships, Olympic Games, 37 years of age, he did very,

very well but it wasn't good enough against Muhammad. CLARE BALDING:

Muhammad into the semifinal which takes place tonight at 9:15pm your

time, it will be on BBC Four because on BBC One, we will be with the

hockey gold medal match but we will catch up with it at half-time so

avoid social media if you don't want to know the result and we will show

you as if it is live in half-time of the hockey. If he wins that, Lutalo

Mohammad would be into a gold medal fight and as we know, that means

gold or silver is guaranteed. Let's head back to the boxing. We saw Joe

Joyce went through to his gold medal fight. Up first is the first of the

women's finals. Here is John inverdale.

We have just seen a Dutch victory, we hope it is not an omen or later

on. We have been watching the semifinals in the women's

middleweight events. What is your take on the key elements in women's

boxing that differentiates it from the men. We haven't seen much

knockouts in the tournament, that came from the men's side, the one we

saw. When I look at it, it is mentality, footwork, jabbing,

sticking unmoving, so a lot of men at the heavier weights fight with a

lot of ego and the women are a bit more technical and work on Kraft.

Almost more skilful? Almost. Some of the skills we have seen,

unbelievable. Just now, like a tiger in the cage, so much skill and

passion. But the men seem to have more knockout power, which is why we

are not seeing so many knockouts. This is a lightweight final and it

is fascinating because coming into the ring now, from France, there is

the reception for Estelle Mossely. Her fiance will be fighting Joe

Joyce in the final on Sunday. Just listen to the reception, it is

fantastic. One thing I would say also about this arena, I know it has

been a perennial issue during the course of the Rio Games, the crowds

were a bit spares in the first few days but in the last three or four

days, they have come out in their numbers and the noise is

unbelievable. It is unbelievable, sometimes I think there is a fighter

in there but it is the referee. They love their boxing, even down to the

referees and the judges. Does it take you back four years? When Joe

was boxing, I thought, this guy is phenomenal, it is believable. It

took me back. He has mature than come a long way. I support of the GB

boys all the way through, I can relive it day in and day out. You

will probably be rushing off at the end of the fight, so a quick word

about Great Britain. Three medals was the target, three has been

achieved, so do you think they will say job done? For this moment and

period, yes, but for the boys that came to the Olympics that didn't

medal, their struggle will be their success. They have World

Championships to start with. Some of them have been Olympic champions

they have boxed against. Top draws to get going so, for me, I am so

happy that they achieved the medal target but the ones who didn't, it

is back to the drawing board because they are so hungry and passionate

for this boxing. That is enough from us. This is the final bout of the

afternoon, or the evening back home, a gold medal at stake. Let's go to

Richie Woodall and Ronald McIntosh. Here is Yin Junhua, the fifth ranked

boxer in the world representing China.

Here are the reigning World Championship Gold Medallist, Estelle

Mossely of France. Watched on by Tony Yoka, the Olympic

superheavyweight finalist. Those two will be married right here in Rio,

will it be a golden celebration? Estelle Mossely goes in pursuit of

Olympic gold in the 60 kg lightweight final, she's in blue.

The boxer in red is the fifth ranked in the world, the World Championship

bronze medallist losing to Katie Taylor who took gold in 2014. Yin is

a boxer, very fast hands indeed. She has a fault with the lead hand.

She's open to a left hook. Mossely will certainly look for that shot.

Right hand has to go in first then of the left hook around the guard.

The Chinese boxer in red fast hands, fast feet, skilful. It's her speed

that is her greatest asset, the girl in red. Estelle Mossely terrifically

talented as well. Expect nothing less from a reigning world champion,

ranked two in the world, the tournament's number two seed. These

two boxers have met before, last year in a multinations tournament in

Bulgaria. On that occasion, the boxer in blue, Mossely, prevailed.

Probably waiting too long hereinin. She's a -- here, Yin. She whips the

right hook around the guard or try to.

She's fairly dangerous with that shot, that right hook. She's waiting

a little bit too long here, the Chinese girl. Plenty of posturing

before coming together. So much thought behind these attacks. The

attempted right-left from Yin wasn't too far away. Big mistake there, the

way she did that one, two, her left leg came round, came square. She's

not used to attacking you see. A sizeable French contingent in the

crowd cheering on Estelle Mossely. How's your French these days? Any

good? I ain't got a Scooby Doo what he was on about. But Mossely was

listening. Right hand went through there for Mossely. There is Tony

Yoka, they're due to be married, after this tournament? Most

certainly. Did she do enough work there on the inside? Let's have a

look. No. They like the work of Yin on the

outside. That's a bit surprising. Both boxers come blazing out of

their respective corners. A lost of traction on the canvas causes Yin to

touchdown. They fairly flew out of the corners. Mossely mindful of the

fact, or the corner may have been informed that she has conceded the

opening round. She's on the front foot looking to establish the left

jab and find a home for her punches. By doing, that she could play into

the hands of Yin, the fifth ranked in the world, who likes to play a

waiting game and then counter with that blazing hand speed she

possesses. You said it, Ron. Absolutely. The tactics have to

change now for Mossely. She may have to force the pace a bit more. She

will do that against a counterpunching south paw who wants

you to come onto her. That's better from Mossely. She's probably going

to push her back to the ropes here and restrict the movement of the

south paw. Yin on the outside of the ring now, Mossely must maybe double

up the attacks and sustain the pressure. That's where she's got to

keep her. Mossely 24 years of age today. What type of birthday is it

going to be? She's here competing with everything she has in an effort

to augment her World Championship gold with Olympic gold here at Rio

2016. Getting closer, making it untidy. Closing the gap on Yin, but

perhaps crowding her own work as well. Yin has to adjust her feet as

her opponent comes forward. She keeps feinting with the feet. Back

to the centre for Yin. Nice foot work from Yin to get off the ropes

and back to the space of the ring. Good right hand from Mossely and as

Richie's been pointing out all tournament long, perhaps that shot

in what was an otherwise close round could be the crucial difference in

tilting the balance in favour of Mossely, as she looks to get back on

terms after conceding the opening round unanimously. The last ten

seconds or so of the round are crucial. We've seen it so many times

in this tournament where it's been close, but one boxer just launches

an attack and just catches the judges' eyes and impresses the

judges and nicks the round. Again, there's not a lot in this round.

Mossely landed a couple of good right hands there. Yin prefers her

opponents coming forward any way. Poor quality of punching from both

there. No knuckles landed. Athletes in general and boxers in particular

will tell you that's often the worst place to be. Tony Yoka can do

nothing to influence the performance of her team-mate. She's taken a

share of it for judge C. Now she trails by two points for judges A

and B after those judges have scored both completed rounds in favour of

the boxer in red. To the second half of the contest. Two rounds completed

and two rounds to go. Estelle Mossely, the reigning European Games

Silver Medallist, the reigning world champion, finds herself in a

difficult position. She's tied things up for judge C, but trails by

two for judges A and B. Expect her to come out in aggressive mood here

looking to find a home for her offence against Yin. In many

respects this is the most important round, especially for Mossely. And

for Yin because if she wins this round she will cruise the last one.

Mossely here, she needs this round. So she needs to up the tempo. By

holding there on the inside, she's got to find the room and space now

the French girl, to land quality shots on the inside. But Yin's

tricky. Good back foot boxer. Mossely has it all to do this round.

Most certainly. Yin with all of her experience, third place in the 2015

Asian continental Championships. Fifth ranking in the world.

Outstanding so far in This Is What You Came For so far. -- in this so

far. She performed terrifically. Here in the closing seconds of this

third round, counter left again is almost ineffective shot from Yin.

You have to credit Mossely for going in pursuit of her opponent. But has

she done enough effective work without being countered? Nervous,

anxious moments amongst the French contingent now. I think she

responded well. She needed a good round. She's certainly going forward

on the front foot. It's hard to find the quality shots to hit against an

opponent moving away from you. Here, this wasn't too bad. Three or four

shots going in from Mossely. Quality of the punching hasn't been great in

this contest. Sometimes it's difficult to actually see if the

knuckles are landing on the target. Nevertheless, better work from

Mossely, going forward. Yin contest to work from the outside, covering

up here. Mossely again the aggressor. Has she done enough is

the big question. Let's have a look. Yes, she has. So they prefer that

front foot boxing from the French girl.

What a fourth and final round we have in prospect now. That is why

both boxers have again charged out of the gate to meet head on at

centre ring. After three completed rounds of boxing, there is very

little in this contest. Judge A has got it one point in favour of Yin.

So too has judge B, whereas judge C has got it one point in favour of

Mossely. This one has come down to a two minute shootout to determine the

destination of Olympic gold in the 60 kg lightweight division. It's

Mossely catching the eye with a burst of punches She's working

better on the inside now. Yin prefers probably mid-and long. She

just gets caught on the inside too many times here. She's not working

there, she's not used to working there. Mossely, better work from the

French girl again. Mossely is a redoubtable competitor. She came

from behind. That was nice there from Mossely, the way she just

slipped to the side and brought Yin onto her right hand. That was a bit

of quality there. And the contest that is this keenly contested and

this close, it could well be that type of quality, which makes the

difference. Mossely is proving impossible to deter here. She's the

boxer who is far busier. Very often it comes down to who wants it more

and Mossely, you have to say, she's doing the better work. More urgency

from her. Yin can't box her style any more at long range. She's

getting crowded out. Mossely's closing the gap down and working

better. We're in the closing seconds. It's an untidy tangle, but

who can produce a final moment of quality? The busier boxer in this

round has been the boxer in blue. What a contest we have just

witnessed in the 60 kg lightweight division a, contest worthy of a Gold

Medal bout here at Rio 2016. And nervous moments for both teams now.

It was the boxer in red, Yin, who made the quicker start but Mossely

responded like the world champion she is to get herself right back

into this contest. Remember, she's trailing by one for two judges.

She's in front by one with judge C. How will they score the Fourth

Round. It was rugged, scrappy, not nice to see, that last round. From a

boxing point of view, but it came down to who want today most. And

Mossely just, in my opinion, did enough to win that last round. But

it is close. I looked at both corners and both corners think

they've got it. It could go either way. For me, Mossely, the French

girl, she's done enough for me here. So the announcement is going to

spell delight for one boxer, disappointment for the other. Which

way is it going? We could be entering the realm of countback.

Ladies and gentleman, the winner by split decision... In the blue

corner... Estelle Mossely. STUDIO: The win goes to France and

that is crucial. The ninth Gold Medal to them. China might have

expected that. Great Britain on 23 at the moment. China remain on 22.
